Right now the Z starts at $1,919 for a base configuration (128GB RAID0 SSD, i5 540M, 4GB RAM) and goes all the way up to $4,799 for a Signature Edition (512GB RAID0 SSD, i7 620M, 8GB RAM, 1080P panel). At close to $2,000 it is already double what you might expect to pay for a mobile gaming system. You get a lot of features for your money but it still comes down to what you want in your notebook. The VAIO Z has a slick design with a super thin screen, machined alloy keyboard tray with integrated Chiclet keyboard, and still has space to fit an optical drive. Build quality is a step above consumer notebooks and gets very close to business models. Sony doesn't hold anything back, so in a sense you do get perks with the pricetag. Overall the VAIO Z isn't for everyone, but it does fill a market; business executives who need to project an image to clients, college students with a large budget, and anyone else who wants a no-compromises notebook.

Das Testgerät VPC-Z12M9E/B und sein noch am Markt befindlicher Vorgänger VPCZ11X9E/B nehmen sich optisch und technisch nicht die Butter vom Brot. Die Leistungsdaten gleichen sich sehr stark, jedoch können wir einen Vorteil der Toshiba RAID 0 SSD-Combo (Z12M9E/B) messen. Die Weiterbenennung des Subnotebooks erscheint uns als Produktpolitik, rein logisch gibt es keine Notwendigkeit.

It's still the fastest 13-inch notebook out there, and it's 1.5 pounds lighter than the 13-inch Apple MacBook Pro (0.5 pounds lighter when you get the Z's large capacity battery). At $1,969, the VAIO Z costs considerably more than the $1,199 Mac, but it has twice the speed and a high-res screen. If you're on a budget, the impressively light and powerful Toshiba Portege R700 is also a good buy, which packs a Core i5 processor into a 3.2-pound notebook for just $1,299. Still, the Vaio Z's twin SSDs, Nvidia graphics, sharper 1600 x 900 display, and a more comfortable backlit keyboard make it well worth the splurge. While we wish it had Nvidia Optimus technology for automatic graphics switching, the VAIO Z remains one of the best notebooks of the year.

As an ultraportable laptop, the Sony VAIO VPC-Z1390X ($3,800 direct) embodies all of these things. It's the lightest 13-inch ultraportable with an optical drive, yet packs enough CPU and graphics horsepower to rival laptops three times its size. The twin 256GB solid-state drives (SSDs), a backlit keyboard, and a high resolution screen aren't offered anywhere else in such a small package, which is why we consider it one of our best laptops. Of course, no other ultraportable costs this much, either.

It goes without saying that $2,749 is a lot to pay for a laptop. And for this configuration you're looking at $2,899 if you opt for the sheet battery, which we highly recommend. For that kind of money, you could get a Samsung Series 9 with a Core i7 processor and still have enough left over to buy an iPad and a 4G smartphone. So you'll have to think long and hard about how much you want the Power Media Dock, a unique innovation that does indeed add plenty of power and support for multiple monitors. There's a lot we like about the notebook itself, too, including its bright display, fast Core i7 performance, and very light weight (even with the battery slice). However, the VAIO Z's keyboard and touchpad aren't as comfortable to use as the competition, and the fan noise can be distracting. Pound for pound, the VAIO Z is the fastest and most versatile ultraportable yet, but you'll have to make some trade-offs--and make serious money--to get one.

The customised Sony Z Series laptop we reviewed today is without a doubt one of the most impressive computers we have tested since we opened Kitguru. The build quality is fantastic, and the use of Carbon Fibre has ensured the Z series weighs as little as possible … even less than the Macbook Air. While the Z Series starts at a very reasonable £1,454 inc vat, by the time you add the upgraded Core i7 processor, 4GB of extra memory, uprated 1080p screen, backlit keyboard and extended battery, the cost is around £2,000 inc vat. This is a lot of cash, especially for a 13 inch superportable computer … almost twice the price of the excellent Lenovo ThinkPad X1.

AMD Radeon HD 6650M: Nachfolger der Mobility Radeon HD 5650 mit mehr Shader Kernen, UVD3 Videoprozessor und Eyefinity+. Dem Codenamen nach zu urteilen eine 6750M mit langsamen DDR3 Speicher.
Diese Karten können nur sehr alte und sehr anspruchslose 3D Spiele flüssig darstellen. Anwendungen wie Office, Internet surfen, Bildbearbeitung oder (SD) Videoschnitt sind jedoch ohne große Einschränkungen möglich.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Intel HD Graphics oder GMA HD genannte onboard Grafikkarte welche im Package der Core i3/i5/i7 Arrandale Dual-Core Prozessoren untergebracht wird. Je nach Prozessormodell maximal mit 500 bis 766 MHz getaktet (Turbo Boost). Von Lenovo anscheinend auch GMA5700MHD genannt. Die gleichgenannte Intel HD Graphics Prozessorgrafik in den Sandy Bridge Prozessoren basiert auf einer neueren Architektur.
Intel HD Graphics 3000: In Sandy Bridge Prozessoren (Core ix-2xxx) integrierte Grafikkarte von Intel. Stärkere GT2 genannte Version mit 12 Execution Units (EUs). Je nach Modell mit unterschiedlichen Taktraten (350-650MHz) und TurboBoost Unterstützung (900-1350MHz).

Intel Core i7:
620M: Der Core i7-620M ist der schnellste Dual-Core Prozessor (im ersten Quartal 2010) von Intel und taktet dank Turbo von 2.66 - 3.33 GHz (je nach Auslastung). Durch Hyperthreading werden bis zu 4 Threads gleichzeitig bearbeitet. Im Package ist auch noch eine integrierte Grafikkarte (GMA HD mit 500-766 MHz) und ein Speichercontroller (beide noch 45nm Fertigung). Dadurch ist der gesamte TDP von 35 Watt nicht sehr hoch.
640M: Der Core i7-640M ist der schnellste Dual-Core Prozessor für Notebooks in Q4 2010 und Nachfolger des i7-620M. Durch Hyperthreading werden bis zu 4 Threads gleichzeitig bearbeitet. Im Package ist auch noch eine integrierte Grafikkarte (GMA HD mit 500-766 MHz) und ein Speichercontroller (beide noch 45nm Fertigung). Dadurch ist der gesamte TDP von 35 Watt nicht sehr hoch.
2620M: Auf Sandy Brige Architektur basierender sehr schneller Doppelkernprozessor (2,7 - 3,4GHz) mit integrierter Grafikkarte und integriertem DDR3 Speicherkontroller.
2640M: Auf Sandy Brige Architektur basierender sehr schneller Doppelkernprozessor (2,8 - 3,5GHz) mit integrierter Grafikkarte und integriertem DDR3 Speicherkontroller.
Intel Core i5:
520M: Der Core i5-520M besitzt im Vergleich zum i7-640 nur 3MB L3 Cache und taktet zwischen 2.4-2.93 GHz (je nach Auslastung dank Turbo Mode). Durch Hyperthreading werden bis zu 4 Threads gleichzeitig bearbeitet. Im Package ist auch noch eine integrierte Grafikkarte (GMA HD mit 500-766 MHz) und ein Speichercontroller (beide noch 45nm Fertigung). Dadurch ist der gesamte TDP von 35 Watt nicht sehr hoch.
430M: Der Core i5-430M besitzt im Vergleich zum i7-640 nur 3MB L3 Cache und taktet zwischen 2.26-2.53 GHz (je nach Auslastung dank Turbo Mode). VT-d, Trusted Execution und AES Funktionen fehlen dem 430M jedoch. Durch Hyperthreading werden bis zu 4 Threads gleichzeitig bearbeitet. Im Package ist auch noch eine integrierte Grafikkarte (GMA HD mit 500-766 MHz) und ein Speichercontroller (beide noch 45nm Fertigung). Dadurch ist der gesamte TDP von 35 Watt nicht sehr hoch.
460M: Schneller Mittelklasse Doppelkernprozessor mit HyperThreading (4 Threads gleichzeitig abarbeitbar) aber ohne AES Funktionen.
2410M: Auf Sandy Brige Architektur basierender Doppelkernprozessor mit 2.3 GHz (Turbo 2.6-2.9 GHz) mit integrierter Grafikkarte (650-1200MHz) und integriertem DDR3 Speicherkontroller.
2450M: Auf Sandy Brige Architektur basierender Doppelkernprozessor mit 2.5 GHz (Turbo 2.8-3.1 GHz) mit integrierter HD Graphics 3000 Grafikkarte 650/1300MHz und integriertem DDR3 Speicherkontroller.
