Test MSI GE76 Raider Laptop: Mit Alder Lake und RTX 3080 Ti zur Gaming-Spitze

Genug Power für 360 Hz.

Was kommt dabei heraus, wenn man die derzeit stärkste Notebook-CPU mit der aktuell kräftigsten Notebook-GPU kombiniert? MSI gibt die Antwort in Form des neuen GE76 Raider. Wir haben die Leistungsfähigkeit des 17-Zoll-Gamers ausführlich getestet.
MSI GE76 Raider

Das GE76 Raider zählt mit einem Gewicht von 3 kg und einer Bauhöhe von 2,6 cm (Angabe ohne Gehäusefüße) weder zu den wuchtigen Gaming-Boliden noch zur Thin-and-Light-Kategorie, sondern bildet eine gelungene Mischung aus beiden Welten.

Trotz des halbwegs schlanken Auftritts muss der 17-Zöller nicht auf potente Gaming-Hardware verzichten. So spendiert MSI dem Topmodell Nvidias taufrische GeForce RTX 3080 Ti, die mit üppigen 16 GB GDDR6-VRAM auf Kundenfang geht. Passend dazu ist Intels pfeilschneller Alder-Lake-Neuling Core i9-12900HK an Bord, ein Vierzehnkerner, der bis zu 20 Threads gleichzeitig bearbeiten kann. Des Weiteren hatte unser Testgerät, das noch aus der Vorproduktion (=Presample) stammte, üppige 32 GB DDR5-4800-RAM (2x 16 GB im Dual-Channel) und zwei 2.000-GB-SSDs auf NVMe-Basis unter der Haube. Um die Bildwiedergabe kümmert sich zwar nur ein Full-HD-Panel, dieses beherrscht allerdings sehr flotte 360 Hz.

Der Preis war zum Testzeitpunkt noch nicht bekannt, mindestens 4.000 Euro dürften für das Ausstattungslevel aber fällig werden.

Display

Das verbaute Display entspricht auf dem ersten Blick dem GE76 Raider 11UH (Panel-ID AUOE295), bietet im Detail allerdings ein paar Verbesserungen. Neben der Farbraumabdeckung (94 vs. 74 % sRGB) hat auch die Farbwiedergabe ein Upgrade erfahren. Sowohl beim Graustufen- als auch beim Color-Checker-Test des Tools Calman liegen die Werte bereits ohne Kalibrierung im Idealbereich (DeltaE kleiner 3).

Die restlichen Messergebnisse fallen vergleichbar aus. 0,23 cd/m² als Schwarzwert sind ebenso respektabel wie ein Kontrast von 1.261:1. Nachbessern sollte der Hersteller beim Thema Leuchtkraft. Durchschnittlich 290 cd/m² mögen zwar für die meisten Innenräumen reichen, für Outdoor-Einsätze ist das GE76 aber nicht geeignet. Als ausgesprochen gut offenbaren sich die Reaktionszeiten (unter 10 ms). Somit laufen auch schnelle 3D-Spiele wie Ego-Shooter ohne Einschränkungen.

Reaktionszeiten (Response Times) des Displays

Die Reaktionszeiten (Response Times) beschreiben wie schnell zwischen zwei Farben eines Pixels umgeschaltet werden kann. Langsame Response Times können zu einer verschwommenen Darstellung, Schlieren und Geisterbilder führen. Besonders bei schnellen 3D-Spielen sind kurze Umschaltzeiten wichtig.

Daher sind die gemessenen Reaktionszeiten besser als der Durchschnitt aller vermessenen Geräte (32.9 ms).

Bildschirm-Flackern / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Eine günstige Methode um die Helligkeit eines Bildschirms zu steuern, ist die Beleuchtung periodisch ein- und auszuschalten. Dies nennt sich PWM (Pulsweitenmodulation) Diese Umschaltung sollte mit einer hohen Frequenz stattfinden damit das menschliche Auge kein Flimmern wahrnimmt. Wenn die Frequenz zu niedrig ist, kann dies zu Ermüdungserscheinungen, Augenbrennen, Kopfweh und auch sichtbaren Flackern führen.
Flackern / PWM nicht festgestellt

Im Vergleich: 53 % aller getesteten Geräte nutzten kein PWM um die Helligkeit zu reduzieren. Wenn PWM eingesetzt wurde, dann bei einer Frequenz von durchschnittlich 8743 (Minimum 5, Maximum 343500) Hz.

Leistung

Mit seiner absoluten High-End-CPU bzw. -GPU spielt das GE76 Raider natürlich ganz vorne bei den Gaming-Notebooks mit. 32 GB RAM und insgesamt 4 TB SSD-Kapazität bilden ebenfalls eine exzellente Grundlage für die kommenden Spielejahre.

Testbedingungen

Wie üblich ist auf dem Notebook eine mächtige Tuning-Software vorinstalliert. Im MSI Center kann man unter anderem die Hardware überwachen (Auslastung, Takt, Temperatur, ...) und einen Leistungsmodus wählen.

Um das Maximum aus den Komponenten herauszukitzeln, haben wir uns für das User Scenario Extreme Performance entschieden, allerdings ohne den optionalen Cooler Boost (wegen inakzeptabler Geräuschentwicklung). Während alle 3D- und Gaming-Benchmarks mit deaktivierter Grafikumschaltung durchgeführt wurden, kam für die anderen Messungen die Optimus-Technik zum Einsatz (Option GPU Switch: MSHybrid Graphics Mode). Wie sich die verschiedenen Leistungsprofile auf die auf Grafikkarte und Prozessor auswirken, sehen Sie in der unteren Tabelle.

Prozessor

Beim Core i9-12900HK handelt es sich – wie eingangs erwähnt – um die derzeit schnellste CPU für Notebooks. Das 10-nm-Modell aus der Alder-Lake-Generation bietet 6 Performance-Kerne, die Hyper-Thrading unterstützen, sowie 8 Effizienzkerne ohne Hyper-Threading-Support. Darüber hinaus kann der 12900HK mit üppigen 24 MB L3-Cache aufwarten. Das K in der Modellbezeichnung steht dabei für einen freien Multiplikator.

Ein weiteres Merkmal ist der integrierte Grafikchip namens Iris Xe Graphics G7. Wenn das Notebook gerade nichts zu tun hat oder nur mit anspruchslosen Tätigkeiten beschäftigt ist (Office, Video, Web etc.), läuft zugunsten des Stromverbrauchs bzw. der Akkulaufzeit nur die iGPU anstelle der dGPU.

Im Vergleich zur alten Tiger-Lake-Generation ist die gebotene Leistung sehr beachtlich. Laut unserem Performance-Rating zieht das GE76 knapp 30 bis 50 % an Laptops mit Core i9-11900H respektive Core i7-11800H vorbei. Selbst das Desktop-Modell Core i9-11900K hat bei Multi-Thread-Benchmarks keine Chance. Im Cinebench-Loop sinken die Ergebnisse nach einer Weile zwar etwas, der Performanceverlust ist jedoch überschaubar.

System Performance

Auch bei der Systemleistung landet das MSI GE76 auf dem ersten Platz. 8.000 Punkte im PCMark 10 haben bisher nur sehr wenige Geräte geknackt (primär Desktop-PCs). Das liegt dabei nicht nur an der teuren CPU-GPU-Combo, sondern auch an den extrem flotten Solid State Drives.

DPC-Latenzen

Etwas Optimierungsbedarf gibt es bei den Latenzen. Im Auslieferungszustand sieht das Tool LatencyMon die Echtzeitbearbeitung von Audio- und Videoinhalten eher kritisch, wenngleich dieses Manko die meisten Laptops betrifft und vom Nutzer mit ein paar Eingriffen oft behoben werden kann.

Der Massenspeicher gibt definitiv Vollgas. MSI hat die beiden M.2-Slots in unserem Fall jeweils mit der 2-TB-Version der Samsung PM9A1 bestückt, welche dank PCIe 4 hervorragende Werte erreicht. Grafikkarte

Das größte Highlight des GE76 Raider wird für viele Käufer die Grafikkarte sein. Mit der GeForce RTX 3080 Ti präsentiert Nvidia ein wahres Leistungsmonster, das – wie man es von den anderen Ampere-GPUs kennt – je nach eingestellter TGP sehr unterschiedlich abschneiden kann.

MSI geht hier keine Kompromisse ein und lässt die RTX 3080 Ti mit ihrer maximalen TGP laufen (175 Watt inklusive Dynamic Boost). Dadurch zieht das GE76 im Benchmark-Parcours an allen bisher getesteten Notebooks vorbei. Zumindest bei den 3DMarks hält sich der Abstand zu einer RTX 3080 mit hoher bis maximaler TGP allerdings in Grenzen. Mehr als 10 bis 20 % plus sollte man nicht erwarten (beim 4K-Gaming ist der Vorsprung oft deutlich größer). Lob gibt es für die Tatsache, dass die RTX 3080 Ti in jedem Fall 16 GB GDDR6-VRAM enthält. Gaming Performance

Da die RTX 3080 Ti im GE76 Raider ihr Debüt feiert, haben wir uns die Mühe gemacht mehr als 30 Spiele in verschiedenen Settings und Auflösungen zu testen – von FHD/Medium bis hinauf zu UHD/Ultra (siehe Tabelle).

Ergebnis: Nvidias neues Topmodell schreckt auch vor anspruchsvollen Spielen nicht zurück. Selbst beim Einsatz von 3.840 x 2.160 Pixeln und maximalen Details reicht es oft für über 60 FPS. Lediglich in Ausnahmefällen (z. B. Cyberpunk 2077 & Crysis Remastered) muss man entweder die Settings und/oder die Auflösung reduzieren, was allerdings eher an der dürftigen Programmierung als an der Grafikpower liegt. Für Ray Tracing ist die RTX 3080 Ti ebenfalls gut gewappnet.

Geräuschemissionen

Die Geräuschentwicklung ist ein altes Leidthema bei Gaming-Notebooks. Auch das GE76 wird bei der Verwendung des Extreme-Performance-Modus im 3D-Betrieb relativ laut. 50 bis 53 dB(A) entsprechen einem deutlich hörbaren Pegel, wobei die Konkurrenz unter Volllast zum Teil noch stärker auf sich aufmerksam macht – und das mit schwächeren Komponenten.

Aufgrund der hohen Geräuschkulisse würden wir im Gaming-Betrieb zur Nutzung des Balanced-Modus raten. Hier bleibt das GE76 unter 50 dB(A) mit eher geringen Leistungseinbußen. Stellenweise laufen Spiele sogar noch im Silent-Modus anständig, der seinen Namen durchaus vedient (weniger als 40 dB). Im Idle-Betrieb verhält sich der 17-Zöller auch im Extreme-Modus meist angenehm ruhig, wenn man von zwischenzeitlichem Auftouren absieht.

Temperatur

Obwohl das GE76 ziemlich laut werden kann, würden wir das Kühlsystem als gelungen bezeichnen. Grund sind die moderaten Gehäusetemperaturen. Während die Messwerte im Stresstest mit den Tools Furmark & Prime95 aufgrund der throttelnden CPU nicht sehr aussagekräftig sind, gibt der Witcher-3-Test einen soliden Ausblick auf die zu erwartende Erwärmung beim Zocken. Weniger als 45 °C auf der Oberseite und weniger als 50 C° auf der Unterseite sind für ein derart schnelles High-End-Notebook überraschend gut – zumal das Chassis keine 3 cm dick ist. Die Komponenten, also CPU und GPU, machten es sich im Witcher-3-Test bei rund 80 °C bequem – ebenfalls ein passabler Wert.

(+) Die Handballen und der Touchpad-Bereich sind mit gemessenen 30 °C kühler als die typische Hauttemperatur und fühlen sich dadurch kühl an.

Energieaufnahme

Solange die Grafikumschaltung aktiv ist, benötigt das GE76 im Idle-Modus nicht allzu viel Strom. 12 bis 28 Watt gehen angesichts der verbauten Hardware vollkommen in Ordnung und unterbieten sogar die Werte der Konkurrenz. Im 3D-Betrieb konnten wir dem Gerät 118 bis 272 Watt entlocken. Das mitgelieferte 280-Watt-Netzteil scheint ausreichend dimensioniert zu sein.

Akkulaufzeit

Wenn man Fotos des Innenraums betrachtet, wird ersichtlich, dass fast der komplette Handballenbereich dem Akku gebührt. MSI hat sich erneut für ein gigantisches 99,9-Wh-Modell entschieden, welches alle Konkurrenten in den Schatten stellt – zumindest auf dem Papier (62 bis 97 Wh). In der Praxis kann sich das GE76 aber nicht den Titel holen. Trotz geringerer Akkukapazität halten das Alienware x17 und das Asus Zephyrus S17 in unserem WLAN-Test (Internetsurfen bei mittlerer Leuchtkraft) länger durch. Knapp 5 Stunden, welche der 17-Zöller im Balanced-Modus erreicht, sind aber keineswegs übel.

Das MSI GE76 Raider ist auch in der aktuellen Edition ein echter Traum für Gaming-Fans.

Ja, einige Aspekte könnte MSI durchaus noch verbessern (z. B. die Qualität der Webcam), insgesamt liefert der Hersteller jedoch ein überzeugendes und ausgewogenes Gesamtpaket. Zu den größten Stärken gehört eindeutig das herausragende Performancelevel.

Die Kombination aus Core i9-12900HK und GeForce RTX 3080 Ti bietet zusammen mit den 32 GB DDR5-RAM und den beiden NVMe-SSDs eine hohe Zukunftssicherheit sowie jede Menge Power bei 3D-Anwendungen. Die meisten Spiele würden auch auf einem externen 4K-Display noch flüssig mit maximalen Details laufen. Der verbaute 360-Hz-Screen punktet indes mit einer flotten Reaktionszeit und einer sauberen Farbwiedergabe.

Wem das Gerät im Extreme-Modus zu laut wird, kann mittels MSI Center einfach auf ein anderes Leistungsprofil wechseln. Balanced stellt nach unseren Erfahrungen einen guten Kompromiss aus Framerate und Geräuschentwicklung dar. Für alltägliche Aufgaben bzw. unterwegs empfehlen sich die Modi Silent und Super Battery mit aktiver Grafikumschaltung.
