The number of BIOS updates needed to fix this machine is a concern and may hint that this combination of power and chassis might have a potential flaw. When it isn’t getting hot, it’s great, but the cooling system might need a rethink.

My tests involved my typical daily tasks, from writing and editing scores of text documents to compiling a multi-layered Excel spreadsheet to the aforementioned photo editing to everyday media consumption. My only performance complaint — the ThinkPad Z16 seemed to be a bit slow to start up from sleep. Of course, I am too — maybe if I'd scraped a bit more of the packaging into my coffee I'd wake faster. Otherwise, the ThinkPad Z16 never faltered. I never found myself grasping for additional performance from the processor, the 16GB of RAM, or the SSD. My usual machine is powered by a current-generation Intel I9 processor — the AMD Ryzen 7 Pro found here is nominally a downgrade, but I'm wondering if I could have managed to spend a bit less and would have been just as happy. I'm sure those looking for a desktop replacement to do heavy video editing will be shopping the available AMD Ryzen 9 Pro at 4.9GHz, but for most users, this will be more than enough machine. As tested, this Lenovo ThinkPad Z16 is available through CDW for $2249 — but a wide variety of configurations can move that price around a bit. I'm genuinely impressed with the value here — this can be the only device needed for a number of users, as it has the specs and performance to do nearly any task you throw at it. That it is built responsibly and sustainability doesn't affect how it performs, either — perhaps it needs to be painted green, however, to properly shout to others that you're doing your part to save the planet while you work.

That quickly simply is a big ask, especially when we are talking about a notebook designed with the enterprise space in mind. That is not to say the notebook feels cheap or inferior in any way, as it is quite the contrary, but in this day and age, you may feel like you can get away with a bit less performance and power for far less money. It is therefore the only aspect holding us back from wholeheartedly recommending the Lenovo ThinkPad Z16.

As a package, the ThinkPad Z16 is pretty convincing. The 4K touchscreen and sound system are both absolutely top-notch while the design and build quality leave nothing to be desired. Performance is on point too; to get better you'll need to look at a machine with a considerably more potent GPU. In the negative column, the webcam is a disaster, the battery life adequate at best and when an Apple laptop offers a better selection of ports you have to ask if Lenovo couldn't have stretched to an HDMI port at the very least.

If you want a ThinkPad that’s more modern and stylish, the Z16 is a suitable option here in the Philippines. It’s arguably the most premium-looking ThinkPad to date, and it has the best internals right now to function as a workstation. Our only complaints about the ThinkPad Z16 are the anemic port selection and the TrackPoint being more of a decorative piece with the trackpad’s size and functionality.

I opened by noting that the ThinkPad Z16 is very much a premium laptop, with the high expectations that designation carries. From the build quality, through the performance, to the battery life, I was consistently impressed. The only negative standout was that pesky webcam. If Lenovo hadn't branded the lid with its specs and created a dedicated "Communications Bar" to house it, I might have shrugged at its mediocre performance. But, if you're going to make something a showpiece of a $2,000ish laptop, it had better be a highlight. It wasn't. If you want a do-it-all, desktop replacement notebook that will last just about all day, look no further. There are systems that perform just as well for hundreds of dollars less, but none that offer the same level of wow-inducing build quality or the attention to detail that's made Lenovo's ThinkPad line a favorite of business travelers for 30 years.

The Lenovo ThinkPad Z16 can definitely handle video editing, but even with the dedicated graphics option, you'll want something beefier for 4K 60 FPS video editing or gaming. Also, if you need power when you're not connected to power, you need to go Intel. But for creators, you get that SD card slot, an optional OLED display, and optional Radeon dedicated graphics.

The Thinkpad Z16 breaks out of the typical ThinkPad mode and introduces a new, more contemporary machine to the line. It proves that Lenovo is willing to take some risks, and it was worth it. The ThinkPad Z16 is a well-built, attractive, fast, and long-lasting laptop with an excellent keyboard and haptic touchpad. The biggest problem with the machine is that it’s expensive. I wish the same principles that Lenovo applied to the smaller ThinkPad Z13 could apply here. But even then, it’s in line with laptops like the Dell XPS 15 and the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme, and it costs less than more powerful laptops like the MSI Creator Z16P and the MacBook Pro 16. The ThinkPad Z16 is worth a look if you’re in the market for a larger machine.

Lenovo’s ThinkPad Z16 tries has some success in its effort to tweak the ThinkPad formula. The laptop is attractive, yet still tame, and material quality is on par with the best Windows competition. I also like the smooth, responsive haptic touchpad and the wide range of modern connectivity.Yet the Z16 doesn’t fix ThinkPad’s typical weakness: value. Starting around $1,550, and more typically near $1,700, the Z16 finds itself facing alternatives that have better performance or an improved display for the same price, or less. Lenovo’s own competition highlights this issue. The company’s new Slim 7, Yoga 7i, and Yoga 9i are a better value (and, yes, Lenovo has a 16-inch Slim 7). Competitor laptops like the Asus Vivobook Pro 16X also provide much better performance in this price range. Those looking for an elegant, durable laptop with a big screen and long battery life will like the Lenovo ThinkPad Z16. It is a good choice for day-to-day use. But if you want to run demanding apps, or enjoy entertainment, the Z16 falls behind the curve.

If you’re in the market for a new laptop that is both powerful and sustainable, Lenovo’s ThinkPad Z13 and Z16 are great options. With a sleek design, fast performance, and up to 32GB of RAM, these laptops can handle anything you throw at them. Plus, they’re made with recycled materials, so you can feel good about your purchase. The ThinkPad has been around for 30 years now, and it’s clear that it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. If you need a reliable machine that will last you for years to come, look no further than the ThinkPad Z13 or Z16. I enjoyed testing these units out and I’m sure that they’ll do well, no matter what challenge you have for them. Depending on the exact build, you can get the Z16 and the Z13 starting at around $1.500.

The Lenovo ThinkPad Z16 had me at “15-hour battery life.” Its power-efficient AMD chip may be, in part, the reason for its impressive runtime performance. The ThinkPad Z16 also outpaced its other 16-inch rivals — the LG Gram 16 and the Acer Swift Edge 16 — in graphics and performance. From the great speakers and military-tested durability, to the biometric authentication and decent display, this laptop has it all (and more). However, I’m not a fan of that mushy keyboard, though I suspect that’s to ensure a quiet typing experience. I’m also not thrilled that the power button is on the edge of the laptop, but hey, you can’t always have your way, right? Overall, the ThinkPad Z16 is a top-notch business laptop that meets all of your security needs while lasting long on a charge. What’s not to love?

The Lenovo ThinkPad Z16 Gen 2 (AMD) is easy to recommend for work due to its suave design, elegant OLED display, and impactful productivity performance. It falls into the mid to high price range, starting at just under $1,500 (rising quickly to the higher-end price range depending on your choice of configuration), and it has the build quality to justify it. If you're looking for a gaming laptop, look elsewhere. This isn't it. But it is a great companion for work, browsing the web, and kicking back with a video or TV show. The Lenovo ThinkPad Z16 Gen 2 (AMD) is an excellent laptop for productivity with a few downsides that can be overlooked if you're fond of the overall package. The 16-inch OLED display is a rare find in the work laptop space, and the performance is able to get the job done.

The ThinkPad Z16 Gen 2 is a handsome, relatively trim full-size laptop with a terrific OLED display, and it's a powerful performer for anything short of workstation CGI rendering. But replacing the TrackPoint buttons with an uncharacteristically balky touchpad doesn't work for us, and we're put off by the missing USB-A and HDMI ports. Lenovo's exemplary build quality is what ultimately earns this laptop a 3.5-star review, but this time an Editors' Choice award is off the table.

Maybe it was the introduction of so many other 16-inch laptops in 2023, but I wasn’t as impressed with the ThinkPad Z16 Gen 2 as I was with the original model. Its aesthetic, while very nice, didn’t impress me as much, its slippery palm rest bugged me, and its battery life wasn’t very good. Even its performance was middle of the pack, especially when spending this kind of money. That’s not to say it’s not a solid option for anyone other than creators. In particular, larger companies that use complex security and management systems will like it a lot. This time around, though, my recommendation is only lukewarm rather than red hot as it was the first time.

Is the Lenovo ThinkPad Z16 Gen 2 a 14-inch M3 MacBook Pro killer? In some ways, yes. In others, no. If your workflow requires your GPU to do some heavy lifting (e.g., photo and video editing, light gaming, etc.), the ThinkPad Z16 Gen 2 does, indeed, beat the M3 MacBook Pro. However, the M3 MacBook Pro outpaces the ThinkPad Z16 Gen 2 in processor performance by a hair. When it comes to battery life, forget it; the Apple laptop outperforms the Lenovo machine by a landslide.

Lenovo:
