The screen is good, the price is right – Vodafone is offering it for £25 a month with nothing down, and you can pick unlocked examples up for under £340 – battery life excellent and there are some interesting VLP software optimisations like the two-thirds keyboard. And while made predominantly of plastic, it still manages to look and feel rather more upmarket than the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3. Performance isn’t bad either, though I don’t see Huawei’s K3V2 chipset keeping the folk at Nvidia or Qualcomm awake at night. Shame about that Google+ bug though.

It’s hard to predict how the final versions of both hardware and software will look like, but if they meet our expectation, it will be great. At least that's the theory. Without some form of marketing and smart promotion in the US, few people will ever know enough about Huawei's phones. The Ascend Mate 2 4G at least does its part by justifying the attention those marketing efforts might generate. The $299 price tag positions it as a phone with half the cost of the average high-end device but possessing specs that are close enough to not frustrate users. In a head-to-head competition with a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 or an LG G3, Huawei's not going to win in any category except price. That might be an advantage for people choosing to pay full price for their handset. The Ascend Mate 2 4G has what's necessary to have a reasonably sound experience if you're not looking for the bleeding edge, and it's better than most phones in its price range. If you want to go big but not spend big, the Ascend Mate 2 4G is a sensible purchase.

What we are not particularly fans of is the design. The white glossy plastic is not the prettiest and we hoped Huawei would have attempted to create something more unique.

At a hardware level, the Huawei Ascend P7 is a very good smartphone for the price. Offering performance comparable to 2013's range of flagship smartphones as well as decent cameras and battery life, there is plenty to like about the Ascend P7. However, the device is let down by Huawei's Emotion skin, which is one of the worst we've ever seen. As well as altering the Ascend P7's interface to the point it is all but unrecognisable to even the most seasoned of Android users, the interface is also buggy and in general hampers the user experience.

At just €449 (£370) it offers great value, especially compared to other flagships that are nearly twice the price. We just wish Huawei would bring in a stock version of Android onto its flagship, as its Emotion UI unfortunately really drags it down. Huawei has come a long way, and we're looking forward to what's next for the company - if the P7 is any indication, Apple, Samsung and HTC had better watch out, as Huawei's offering some serious competition.

Selfie-Maschine. So ähnlich bewirbt Huawei das Ascend G6, denn der Star ist hier ausnahmsweise mal die Frontkamera, die mit 5 Megapixeln außergewöhnlich hoch auflöst. Die restliche Ausstattung ist eher in der Mittelklasse zu verorten, dafür ist auch der Preis klein: 249 Euro verlangt Huawei für seinen neuesten Smartphone-Spross.

Huawei Ascend G7

Das neue Huawei Ascend G7 ist ein schön gefertigtes Smartphone mit Augenmerk auf Benutzerfreundlichkeit. Gediegenheit und Liebe zum Detail sind die Eckpunkte des Designs mit einer vollständig metallischen Rückseite und gerundeten Ecken. Damit kann das Huawei Ascend G7 ultra schlank und robust sein. Man kann zwischen zwei Farben wählen: schwarz und weiß. Der schöne, 5,5 Zoll große INCELL HD-Bildshirm sorgt für wunderbare Multimedia-Wiedergabe. Dank ARM Cortex Quad-Core-Prozessor mit einer Taktrate von 1,2 GHz, 2 GB RAM und 16 GB internen Speicher ist das Huawei Ascend G7 für die meisten Aufgaben leistungsstark genug.

Dem Android 4.4 wurde die Huawei Emotion UI 3.0 Benutzeroberfläche hinzugefügt und das Smartphone bringt die üblichen Features wie GPS, Bluetooth 4.0, FM Radio und Micro USB 2.0. Es gibt eine 13 MP Autofokus-Kamera an der Rückseite mit einer f2.0 Blende, die hervorragende Bilder schießt. Zudem hat Huawei eine 5 MP Frontkamera für Selfi-Liebhaber verbaut. Das gesamte Gerät wiegt nur 165 g mit Akku und ist nur 7,6 mm dick. Die Akkulaufzeit des Huawei Ascend G7 ist mit eingebautem 3000 mAh Akku, der eine Standby-Zeit von 300 Stunden ermöglicht, ziemlich gut.

Das Huawei Ascend Y550 ist ein günstiges jedoch fähiges Smartphone. In puncto User-Schnittstelle ist das Huawei durchdacht. Elegantes Aussehen zieht die Aufmerksamkeit von Nutzern auf sich und das Huawei Ascend Y550 schafft das mit seinem einfachen Design und abgerundeten Ecken. Die Abdeckung an der Rückseite ist für bessere Griffigkeit etwas texturiert und mittig im oberen Bereich befindet sich dort eine erhöhte Kamera. An der Vorderseite gibt es 3-Touchbuttons, einen physikalischen Stromschalter und Lautstärkeregler. Das Smartphone ist in schwarz oder weiß verfügbar. Das Android-4.4-Gerät verwendet einen Qualcomm MSM8916 Quad-Core-Prozessor mit einer Taktrate von 1,2 GHz, 1 GB RAM, eine Adreno 306 GPU und einem internen Speicher von 4 GB. Nutzer können die magere Kapazität mit einer microSD-Karte um bis zu 32 GB erweitern. Der 4,5 Zoll IPS-Bildschirm liefert gute Farben und Kontrast. Zu den weiteren Features zählen LTE, A-GPS und Bluetooth 4.0. Das Smartphone verfügt über eine 5 MP Hauptkamera an der Rückseite und eine sekundäre 2 MP-Frontkamera. Huaweis eigene Emotion UI 2.3 läuft auf Android, liefert zusätzliche Möglichkeiten und vereinfacht die Verwendung. Das Huawei Ascend Y550 liefert dank eines 2000 mAh Akku eine ausgezeichnete Akkulaufzeit.

The Huawei Ascend Y550 is currently available for £69 from EE and O2, and at that price it seems a reasonable deal. However, SIM-free you’ll pay up to £110, and at that price it’s awful. If you can afford a £100 phone, you can do much better than the Y550. The Motorola Moto G and EE Kestrel offer a better core experience. Even if you can’t afford that, the Motorola Moto E doesn’t have the same screen compromises as the Huawei Ascend Y550, although it doesn’t have 4G either and offers a much weaker CPU.

Durchaus lobenswert ist das Display: Es zeigt sich klar und scharf, und auch die Farben passen. Allerdings gibt es ... beim Huawei eine gewisse Blickwinkel-Abhängigkeit. Der Prozessor zeigt in den Benchmarks ein befriedigendes Ergebnis, in der Praxis ist seine Leistung wohl auch aufgrund des schlank gehaltenen Betriebssystems noch deutlich besser.

At the end of the day, the Huawei Ascend G620S is a £125 phone and at that price it's a bit of a bargain. I'd still argue that the Moto G (2014) is a better handset overall, though, thanks largely to its superior interface and more up-to-date OS. The Huawei Ascend G620S has such a clunky name that you'll likely forget what it's called by the time you get to your local mobile phone emporium, but if you do come home with one you probably won't be disappointed. You could certainly do a lot worse or spend a lot more money.
