It does provide a decent desktop-like experience, given its 17-inch widescreen. I think this system would be more attractive to users if it reached the $999 price point, like the Toshiba Satellite P205-S6237. We were impressed with the Alienware M9750, but we’re even more impressed that the P-171 has all-around better hardware, and costs $1,500 less. It’s truly a remarkable achievement to offer this much power at a reasonable price point. Even better, Gateway is also offering two other FX notebook models with slightly lower specs for $2K and $1600, which is crazy affordable for a gaming notebook. Though we don’t like the lame trialware Gateway includes with the notebook it’s nothing 30 minutes of cleanup won’t fix. And we’d also like to see a DVI-out port instead of the legacy VGA port, though the inclusion of an HDMI connector is a nice touch.

The P-6831FX produced excellent scores in all of our gaming related benchmarks. Not even the Dell XPS M1730 with its dual GeForce 8700M GT's in SLI could outperform the single GeForce 8800M GTS powering the P-6831FX. Though Dell has since upgraded the M1730 with dual GeForce 8800M GPUs as well. It is obvious that the P-6831FX's performance is bottlenecked by the low-end processor, but it still managed to produce amazing benchmark scores in our gaming tests. None of the other the mid-range notebooks in our test came close to the P-6831FX when it came to gaming. Unfortunately the picture is quite different in productivity and CPU intensive tasks. It was easily outclassed in nearly every module of PCMark Vantage and performance in 3DMar06's CPU module was also quite poor.

Bought this bad boy at Best Buy, last one they had and I just had to jump on it for the price. Two weeks in, and this is still a very solid machine... still works perfectly and there are no glaring issues with the build quality... and I have been moving it around a lot in the past two weeks, and even dropped it one time!

Extra mini-PCIe and Hard Drive bays sit empty, waiting for you to fill them with some future goodness. And peering deep into the FX's innards, I could faintly see another socket exactly where I expect the GPU to be - so there might be some pleasant surprises for the more adventurous hardware tweaker. In short, this is a notebook that should see even an avid gamer get two years of use from. Consider the rapid pace of game development and you will appreciate the compliment.

For the price, you cannot beat this laptop. I spent nearly a week trying to find a laptop that dollar-per-dollar matched this. The only thing that comes close is the new Toshiba Qosmio, but due to its horrible shade of ruby red, will probably scare more customers away. So things do limit this from being perfect. The fact it has the ability to have two drives, but no raid is odd. Also, the screen casing, while nice, is a bit flimsy, but nothing cheap. I also don't get putting 667mhz memory when 800 is basically the same price. Oh in a perfect world i guess.

Gateway: Gateway ist eine börsennotierte US-amerikanische PC-Handelskette nach dem Vorbild von Dell. Sie wurde 1985 in Iowa gegründet und (2009) den Sitz in Kalifornien. Gateway gilt als der drittgrößte PC-Hersteller in den USA und steht auf Platz 10 in der Welt (Dezember 2005). 2001 wurden Produktion und Vertrieb in Europa und Suedostasien beendet und die dortigen Niederlassungen geschlossen. 2007 kaufte der taiwanische Computerhersteller Acer Gateway für 710 Millionen Dollar. Von deutschsprachigen Magazinen wurden Gateway-Computer bisher so gut wie nie getestet.
2014 bis 2016 war Gateway nicht mehr unter den Top 10 der Laptop-Hersteller/Distributoren. Neuere Geräte von Gateway werden kaum noch von Fachmedien getestet (2016).
3D Spiele sind auf diesen Vertretern nur in Ausnahmen spielbar, grundsätzlich sind die Grafiklösungen hierfür jedoch nicht geeignet. Office Programme und Internet surfen dürfte jedoch ohne Problem möglich sein.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100: Integrierte shared Memory Grafikkarte von Intel, die im 965GM und GL960 Chipsatz eingebaut ist. Dank voll programmierbarer Pipeline DX 10 fähig (mit Treibern seit 15.9.0.1472). Gute Performance für eine integrierte Grafikkarte, jedoch trotzdem kaum spielefähig.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Integrierter (onboard) Grafikchip auf Mobile Intel 945GM/C/Z/ME/ML Chipsätzen und Nachfolger des GMA 900. Kein Hardware T&L (für manche Spiele benötigt). Für Spiele kaum geeignet.
Diese Klasse ist noch durchaus fähig neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mehr mit allen Details und in hohen Auflösungen. Besonders anspruchsvolle Spiele laufen nur in minimalen Detailstufen, wodurch die grafische Qualität oft deutlich leidet. Diese Klasse ist nur noch für Gelegenheitsspieler empfehlenswert. Der Stromverbrauch von modernen Grafikkarten in dieser Klasse ist dafür geringer und erlaubt auch bessere Akkulaufzeiten.
NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTS: Die Nvidia GeForce 8800M GTS basiert auf den Desktop G92 Chip und bietet dank 256 Bit Speicherbus und deutlich mehr Shadern eine bessere Leistung als der GeForce 8700M GT.
NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS: Basiert wie die Desktop 9600 GT auf dem G94 Kern und wird je nach Modell in 65nm (512MB) bzw. 55nm (1024 MB) gefertigt. Durch die höhere Chiptaktung (im Vergleich zu den anderen 9800er Karten, soll der Chip den Nachteil der geringeren Shaderanzahl wieder aufholen und etwa so schnell wie eine 9800M GT sein. Die integrierte PureVideo HD Engine unterstützt den Prozessor beim Dekodieren von HD Videos.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Core Duo Nachfolger mit längerer Pipeline und 5-20% Geschwindigkeitszuwachs bei 0.5 - 3 Watt mehr Stromverbrauch.
Der Notebook Core 2 Duo ist baugleich mit den Desktop Core 2 Duo Prozessoren, jedoch werden die Notebook-Prozessoren mit niedrigeren Spannungen und geringerem Frontsidebus Takt betrieben. P8400: Der P8400 ist ein Mittelklasse-Dual-Core Prozessor der Core 2 Duo Reihe. Durch den TDP von 25W eignet sich die CPU auch für kleinere Notebooks. Für ambitionierte Spieler könnte die Leistung jedoch etwas zu gering ausfallen.
Intel Core 2 Extreme: Die höchstgetaktete CPU von Intels Core 2 Duo Serie wird als Core 2 Extreme (mit saftigem Aufpreis) verkauft. Als besonderheit wurde bei den Extreme Prozessoren der Übertaktungsschutz entfernt.

17.00: Diese Displaygrösse ist ein Standardformat für Desktop-Replacements. Die DTR-Laptops sind schwerer zu tragen, brauchen mehr Strom, dafür sind Texte leicht lesbar und hohe Auflösungen kein Problem.
