The Toshiba Satellite A305-S6905 offers good value as a middle-of-the-road mainstream laptop, but for an extra $150, a step-up Toshiba model offers more RAM and dedicated graphics.

Unless you find its glossy body and case markings completely off-putting, the Toshiba Satellite A305-S6916 is tough not to like. It has a good component mix, including a decent Intel Core 2 Duo processor, a full 4GB of memory, and a discrete 512MB graphics card. It also offers extras like touch-sensitive controls and a Webcam, all for less than $800. The Toshiba Satellite A305-S6916 offers up a unique design, slightly better graphics performance than the competition, and a couple fun extras that make paying more for it worthwhile.

For something that costs only $1,149, the Toshiba Satellite A305-S6864 offers a good looking laptop and 256MB of discrete graphics memory for a reasonable price. Just when Toshiba had lulled us into complacency with its pinstriped Satellite design, it throws us the Satellite A305-S6858. The special-edition laptop incorporates a cool, swooshing, gray-and-silver case finish that will definitely prompt a few jealous looks in the campus coffee shop. Inside the case, you'll find standard mainstream Intel components and a generous memory allotment that (when combined with 64-bit Windows Vista) took the Satellite A305-S6858 to the head of the pack on our performance benchmarks. The Toshiba Satellite A305-S6858 is a very good mainstream machine, but we prefer one of its competitors.

Toshiba has done a very good job of putting together a quality system that performs well and looks good. It features a powerful Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 processor, with more than enough memory to suit most needs, and plenty of hard disk storage space to spare. The A305-S6845's unique design and smooth contours should appeal to many users. Its vivid display and great-sounding speakers make the laptop an excellent candidate for watching movies, playing games, and other rich multimedia experiences. The USB Sleep and Charge feature offers a convenient way to charge many USB devices without having to power on the laptop. The fingerprint reader and face-recognition add an extra-level of convenience and fun to what might otherwise be mundane tasks. While the glossy design should appeal to many users, its propensity to attract fingerprints will be a big turn off for many. Like many vendors, Toshiba pre-loads the system with what we feel is too much, less-than-useful software; as much of the bundled software is free or free demos, interested users can easily fetch the applications themselves.

Toshiba's Satellite A305 is a bit chunky for a thin and light notebook computer system, but this extra girth allows it to pack in an extra hard drive for some class leading hard drive storage. The AMD-based Toshiba Satellite A305D is built off a good platform that it also shares with the Intel A305, but the small price cut doesn't make up for the huge loss in performance. For saving roughly $200 you go from a capable gaming machine with dual hard drives and an extended battery, to a budget configuration notebook. If the price was about $300 or $400 dollars less than it is now I would be all over it considering how much I love this design, but the retail price of $1,000 is asking way too much.

Toshiba: Die Toshiba Corporation ist ein japanischer Misch- bzw Technologiekonzern. Die Firma entstand 1939 und 1978 wurde Toshiba offizieller Firmenname. Zu den Produkten und Dienstleistungen des Unternehmens gehören Energie, industrielle und soziale Infrastruktursysteme, Aufzüge und Rolltreppen, elektronische Komponenten, Halbleiter, Festplatten, Drucker, Batterien, Beleuchtung, Logistik und Informationstechnologie. Toshiba war einer der größten Hersteller von Personal Computern, Unterhaltungselektronik, Haushaltsgeräten und medizinischen Geräten.

Diese Karten können nur sehr alte und sehr anspruchslose 3D Spiele flüssig darstellen.  Anwendungen wie Office, Internet surfen, Bildbearbeitung oder (SD) Videoschnitt sind jedoch ohne große Einschränkungen möglich.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650: In 55nm gefertigter DirectX 10.1 Mittelklasse-Grafikchip mit vergleichbarer Leistung einer 8600M GT Grafikkarte. Dank Avivo Video Engine kann die Grafikkarte den Prozessor bei verschiedensten Videooperationen (auch HD Video) entlasten.

3D Spiele sind auf diesen Vertretern nur in Ausnahmen spielbar, grundsätzlich sind die Grafiklösungen hierfür jedoch nicht geeignet. Office Programme und Internet surfen dürfte jedoch ohne Problem möglich sein.

ATI Radeon Xpress X1250: Auf AMD M690G verbauter onboard Grafikchip. Manchmal auch Mobilty Radeon X1250 genannt. Basierend auf X700 Design, jedoch mit weniger Pixel- und Vertexpipelines. Für Spieler kaum geignet. Windows Vista Aero tauglich.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Core Duo Nachfolger mit längerer Pipeline und 5-20% Geschwindigkeitszuwachs bei 0.5 - 3 Watt mehr Stromverbrauch.

Der Notebook Core 2 Duo ist baugleich mit den Desktop Core 2 Duo Prozessoren, jedoch werden die Notebook-Prozessoren mit niedrigeren Spannungen und geringerem Frontsidebus Takt betrieben. Von der Leistung bleiben gleichgetaktete Notebooks deswegen (und auch wegen der langsameren Festplatten) 20-25% hinter Desktop PCs.

T8100: Ehemaliger Mittelklasse Core 2 Duo basierend auf den Penryn Kern mit VT-x Virtualisierungsfunktionen.

AMD Turion 64 X2: 64 Bit Dual Core (2 Kern) Prozessor, DDR2-667 Unterstützung, Pacifica (AMD-v);
Der AMD Turion 64 X2 soll gegen den Intel Core Duo  positioniert werden und ist am 17. Mai 2006 erschienen. Laut c't 15/2006 ist der Stromverbrauch in allen Leistungsbereichen (TL-56 mit ATI Xpress 1150 und Mobility Radeon X300) nicht höher als bei Centrino-Duo-Notebooks. Dass heisst, dass man in etwa die gleiche Akkulaufzeit und Lüfterverhalten erwarten kann. Die Rechenleistung lag jedoch wegen dem kleineren L2 Cache sogar 20% unter dem T2300 (1.66 GHz). Trotzdem ist die Leistung immer noch ausreichend.

TL-64: In 65nm gefertigter Doppelkernprozessor basierend auf den K8 Kern. Die Geschwindigkeit ist im Schnitt vergleichbar mit einem 1.9-2 GHz Core Duo Prozessor (oder Celeron Dual Core) mit 1 MB Level 2 Cache.
