In Sachen Verarbeitung hat Huawei mit seinem neuen Flaggschiff einiges gut gemacht. Nicht nur die Materialien fühlen sich hochwertig an, sondern auch der Aspekt, dass die Kamera nicht aus dem Gehäuse hervorsteht gefällt. Bei der Kamera hat Huawei mit Leica einen ordentlichen Partner an Bord geholt. Leider ist für mich die Kamera nur im Durchschnitt angesiedelt. Das liegt nicht zuletzt am fehlenden Bildstabilisator bei der Kamera. Mit der allgemeinen Performance lässt es sich außerdem gut arbeiten. Vielleicht ist der Preis ein wenig zu hoch angesetzt.

Arguably Huawei's best effort in the smartphone market till date, the P9 has a lot going for it. The smartphone has fairly powerful innards, and a dual-camera setup that (in the right conditions) is capable of capturing some amazing shots, all encased in a chassis that's a sight to behold.

I also found, as you’ll probably have seen in the video above, that sometimes I kept missing the buttons within the camera interface. Finally, ‘Magazine Unlock’ brings up a different image every time you see the lockscreen – always making the phone seem fresh, potentially. Though with the speed of fingerprint unlocking via the back sensor, you may never see the images, making the lockscreen itself almost irrelevant. Maybe it will go the way of the app drawer in time? I don’t want to seem too down on the Huawei P9. If this was an Honor device (Huawei’s consumer brand) and put out at £300 then I’d consider it fabulous value for money and a top buy. Though with the speed of fingerprint unlocking via the back sensor, you may never see the images, making the lockscreen itself almost irrelevant. Maybe it will go the way of the app drawer in time? I don’t want to seem too down on the Huawei P9. If this was an Honor device (Huawei’s consumer brand) and put out at £300 then I’d consider it fabulous value for money and a top buy. At £450 (in the UK, including VAT) though, it’s within striking distance of the top tier devices which out-gun it in terms of screen, imaging, speaker, performance, and brand.

True the UI is different, but it is still Android and you still get access to Google’s services, you can install the myriad of apps from the Play Store, and so on. What isn’t there to like?

Like the P9 and the Mate 8, the Huawei P9 Plus has excellent hardware, but I also like the software. It isn’t stock Android and if you want stock Android then you aren’t going to be happy with EMUI. True the UI is different, but it is still Android and you still get access to Google’s services, you can install the myriad of apps from the Play Store, and so on. What isn’t there to like?

The pressure-sensitive screen is pretty forward-thinking, too. I don't think Android is ready for this kind of tech yet, but it's great to see Huawei giving it a go now - it'll be ready when everyone else catches up.
