Die Grafikkarte Radeon HD 4670 von ATI kann mit der Nvidia GTX 260M nicht ganz mithalten, aber das Komplettsystem ist nahezu perfekt. Fast hätte das Studio XPS 16 den ersten Platz unserer TopTen erreicht, wäre da nicht die unzumutbare Hitzeentwicklung des Gehäuses.

Ausstattungsbereinigt liegen die beiden Modelle auf dem gleichen Niveau. Anders gesagt heißt das, dass man für ein kleineres Notebook mit sehr potenter Technik so viel zahlt, wie für ein ebenbürtiges größeres Notebook. Ob man daraus eine Aussage über das Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis ableiten kann, hängt von den eigenen Anforderungen ab. Wie gesagt nehmen sich die beiden Modelle bei der Leistung praktisch nichts und können über Dells Webshop identisch ausgestattet werden. So kann man also nach Displaygröße, Batterielaufzeit und Grafikleistung entscheiden - oder eben nach der Verarbeitung. Uns überzeugte allerdings das Studio XPS 1340 insgesamt mehr.

Mit Spannung erwarteten wir das Dell Studio XPS 16. Insgesamt kann man nach Abschluss der Tests durchaus das Resümee ziehen, dass sich das Warten auch gelohnt hat. Das Gehäuse vermag durch ein überaus schlichtes und gediegenes Design zu gefallen und bietet außerdem eine solide Hülle für die verbaute Hardware. Kleinere Verarbeitungsschwächen trüben das Bild minimal, sind aber in Anbetracht des Preises durchaus eine Erwähnung wert. Bei den gebotenen Ports bleiben kaum Wünsche unbefriedigt, vor allem in Hinsicht Bildausgängen, wo das Studio XPS 16 mit HDMI Port, Display Port und VGA Anschluss ordentlich auftrumpft. Etwas problematisch könnte für einige User lediglich die Häufung der Schnittstellen an der linken Gehäuseseite sein. Ein nettes Gadget ist wie schon beim kleineren XPS 13 die FastAccess Gesichtserkennung anstelle eines Fingerprint Readers. Die Tastatur eignet sich unserer Ansicht nach durchaus auch für intensivere Schreibarbeiten, und kann durch die standardmäßige Integration einer Beleuchtung auch bei gedämmten Umgebungslichtbedingungen überzeugen. Aufgrund der vorangegangenen Tests empfiehlt sich das Dell Studio XPS 16 vor allem für Multimedia Anwendungen mit besonderer Ausrichtung auf Bild-, Grafik- und Videobearbeitung. Neben dem erstklassigen Display können hier vor allem auch die gute Anwendungsperformance sowie die günstigen OpenGL Ergebnisse genannt werden. The Dell Studio XPS 16 is a good-looking entertainment notebook of reasonable build quality and decent portability (considering its size). It packs a stunningly vibrant screen, along with some gaming punch. While it has some minor flaws, particularly the amount of heat it pumps out during gaming, it is a great buy for those who can afford its $2000+ pricetag. As a footnote, during the composition of this review, the speakers started blowing out intermittently (I believe due to a loose wire). Therefore, I contacted Dell support via chat, and they tried re-installing the audio driver to no avail. I also reported the issue with the uneven trim marking up the screen and the flickering issue. The tech then told me that it would be easier to replace the whole machine with something comparable or better. Contrary to what many others say about Dell Tech Support, I say that it rocks ... if you are under Completecare.

Yes, you do lose a few vertical pixels, but given we've seen such pleasures as the 1,600 x 900 13.1in effort in the Sony VAIO Z Series (see: Sony VAIO VGN-Z11WN/B) and the magnificent 1,920 x 1,080, RGB LED one in the Dell Studio XPS 16 we're looking today, there are enough points in the 'pros' column to even things out. Clearly this is good news for Dell, then, since this is the first and only 16in notebook to sport such a display - the closest alternative being Sony's 18.4in VAIO AW11XU/Q, which you won't see south of £2,000. We can't recommend the Dell Studio XPS 16 to everyone because HP's HDX 16 offers a similar feature set at a keener price. However, if you've been hankering after a notebook with desktop quality colour fidelity, then it makes a tantalising proposition - especially when, in the greater scheme of things, the option isn't even that expensive. As such it gets a (qualified) Recommended Award.

We quite like the nicely spaced backlit keyboard, responsive trackpad and decent speakers. The slot-loaded optical drive also blends in quite nicely with the overall design and the unit retains much of the design of the XPS machines while obtaining a very Studio-like style, so to speak. If you're none too fussy or picky, you'll find that the specs of the base model should be more than sufficient and that's definitely a good deal for the Studio XPS 1640 (as with our better configured review unit too).

Das Dell Studio XPS 1645 ist nicht mehr auf der Dell Homepage konfigurierbar. Wir haben unser Testgerät von notebooksbilliger.de, wo es für 1200 Euro gelistet ist. Mit dem hellen und kontrastreichen FullHD-Display und einer schnelldrehenden 320 GByte Festplatte kostet das Dell Studio XPS im Dell-Shop 100 Euro weniger. Wer auf Blu-ray nicht verzichten kann, muss im Dell-Shop 40 Euro mehr als bei notebooksbilliger.de berappen.

The only reason I’ve compared this laptop with the other two in the table, is to show that this one offers a good price-performance ratio. Otherwise, the two other machines have their own reasons (and good ones) for being slightly over priced. This machine doesn’t look as stylish and slick, there’s not much metal in construction and it is quite far from being truly portable. So clearly, aesthetics and build quality have a lot to do when it comes to laptops. And if one brand has a larger fan following than another, then it’s a different ball game altogether.

Dell: Dell ist ein 1984 gegründeter US-amerikanischer Hersteller (Sitz Texas) von Computer-Hardware und gehört zu den grössten internationalen Herstellern sowohl in Bezug auf Marktanteile als auch hinsichtlich Notebook-Modellen. Die Produktpalette umfasst unter anderem Desktops, Notebooks, Speichersysteme, Monitore, Server, Drucker, Unterhaltungselektronik und Peripheriegeräte. Dell bietet Laptops an, die ich für verschiedene Einsatzbereiche eignen, z. B. Business-Laptops, Gaming-Laptops, Ultra-Portables und Workstations. Die Business-Notebooks von Dell aus den Latitude- und Precision-Serien sind eine Option für professionelle Anwender und Unternehmen.

2023 hatte Dell einen ungefähren Marktanteil von 17% am weltweiten PC-Absatz und war damit die Nummer 3 nach Lenovo und HP.

Für Gaming-Enthusiasten ist die Marke Alienware von Dell für Gaming-Notebooks vorgesehen.

Einige nicht anspruchsvolle aktuelle Spiele können mit geringen Details noch flüssig gespielt werden. Für Office und Video natürlich ausreichende Leistungsreserven.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670: Die Mobility HD 4670 ist eine höhergetaktete Mobility HD 4650 und Nachfolgekarte der HD 3670. Je nach Verwendung von DDR2, DDR3, GDDR3 unterschiedlich schnell. Dank Avivo HD kann die GPU auch HD Video dekodieren.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Core Duo Nachfolger mit längerer Pipeline und 5-20% Geschwindigkeitszuwachs bei 0.5 - 3 Watt mehr Stromverbrauch.

Der Notebook Core 2 Duo ist baugleich mit den Desktop Core 2 Duo Prozessoren, jedoch werden die Notebook-Prozessoren mit niedrigeren Spannungen und geringerem Frontsidebus Takt betrieben. Von der Leistung bleiben gleichgetaktete Notebooks deswegen (und auch wegen der langsameren Festplatten) 20-25% hinter Desktop PCs.

T9400: Der Core 2 Duo T9400 ist ein schneller Mittelklasse Prozessor mit 2.53 GHz und 6 MB Level 2 Cache. Verglichen mit dem gleich schnellen P9500, braucht der T9400 mehr Strom (höherer TDP).

P9700: Sehr schneller (dank 2.8 GHz und 6 MB Level 2 Cache) und mit lediglich 28Watt relativ sparsamer Doppelkernprozessor der Core 2 Duo Serie.

Intel Core i7:

720QM: Der Core i7-720QM war zur Zeit der Einführung der langsamste Core i7-9xx Quad Core Prozessor. Er taktet dank Turbo Modus automatisch zwischen 1.6-2.8 GHz. Außerdem unterstützt er Hyperthreading zur gleichzeitigen Abarbeitung von 8 Threads. Im Vergleich zu den stärkeren Core i7 bietet er außerdem nur 6MB L3 Cache.

Intel Core i5:

520M: Der Core i5-520M besitzt im Vergleich zum i7-640 nur 3MB L3 Cache und taktet zwischen 2.4-2.93 GHz (je nach Auslastung dank Turbo Mode). Durch Hyperthreading werden bis zu 4 Threads gleichzeitig bearbeitet. Im Package ist auch noch eine integrierte Grafikkarte (GMA HD mit 500-766 MHz) und ein Speichercontroller (beide noch 45nm Fertigung). Dadurch ist der gesamte TDP von 35 Watt nicht sehr hoch.

16.00: Dieser Bereich für Displayformate war und ist eine Seltenheit. Es ist größer als der allgemeine Standard von 15 Zoll, aber noch nicht im Bereich der großen Workstations. Man hat üblicherweise höhere Bildschirmauflösungen zur Verfügung, darunter leidet aber auch die Portabilität.
