Xiaomi Redmi K20 Pro

The flagship phone has a good combination of a processor with an amazing display and camera. The phone can handle most of the heavy tasks easily. The front pop-up and rear triple camera, both are good to capture beautiful shots in most lighting conditions. Paired with 4,000mAh battery, k20 Pro is an excellent value for money phone.

The Xiaomi Redmi K20 Pro’s DXOMARK score of 102 doesn’t get the device a top position in our ranking, but it is still a respectable result for a phone that is less than half the price of many flagships from the competition. It covers focal lengths from ultra-wide to 2x telephoto and is capable of recording decent still images and video in most situations. There is room for improvement in some areas—for example, dynamic range, white balance and video detail—but from a photography point of view, the Redmi is a great value for the money overall and worth a close look from any mobile photographer on a limited budget.

The Redmi K20 Pro has made a stunning entry in the affordable flagship market which not only competes with the OnePlus 7 Pro but also proves itself a deal-breaker. There’s no other smartphone right now to feature such beefy specs at this price.

Overall, we think the K20 Pro offers tremendous value for money - especially on markets where the Mi9 is not available - and unless you are looking for specific features, better camera performance or different software, we think most people don't need to look any further than this for a great all-round smartphone experience.

Xiaomi is the largest smartphone vendor in India. Its success can be attributed to the popularity of its budget Redmi and Redmi Note series. While the company has launched its flagship Mi Mix and Mi series handsets in India, they failed to do well. This time around, Xiaomi is bringing a new flagship-grade smartphone under its Redmi branding: the Redmi K20 Pro.

After disrupting the budget and mid-range segment, Xiaomi launched its first premium smartphone under the Redmi series – K20 Pro. The phone comes recommended if you can live with MIUI 10 and the slow under-display fingerprint scanner. But where would that slot the speculated POCO F2? Xiaomi looks set to create confusion in the 20-30k segment as well with the K20 series. I wouldn’t be surprised if Xiaomi releases a Redmi K20 Lite next.

At Rs 30,999 (8GB/256GB), the Redmi K20 Pro midrange smartphone has the qualities to challenge some of the current-generation premium phones. It exceeds expectations in design, display, camera, performance and battery life. This smartphone heralds the Redmi brand in a new avatar, indicating Xiaomi’s ambitions to expand take its dominance beyond the budget and affordable segments. With OnePlus now eyeing the premium segment, Xiaomi might be looking to enter its shoes in the midrange premium segment.

For quite some time OnePlus phones had been a preferred choice for buyers looking at buying affordable flagships. However, there is now a more value for money option with the Redmi K20 Pro. The device offers everything you would need in a flagship at a very competitive price. In fact, this is the most affordable smartphone with Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor and there is a difference of Rs 5,000 between the base variants of OnePlus 7 and Redmi K20 Pro. If you are looking forward for a flagship then this is your best bet under Rs 30,000 and plus Rs 999 for the 8GB RAM model.

Xiaomi has jam-packed this phone with a lot of features and the Redmi K20 Pro’s price is thus justified. The display, the performance, the overall look and design, and the camera’s performance in regular lighting is impressive. With the Redmi K20 Pro, the biggest cons could push notifications from the Xiaomi apps, which are annoying, the camera’s low-light performance, and the battery, which had an erratic performance in my usage.

The K20 Pro is Xiaomi's flagship model in the Redmi range, and has a lot on offer at an affordable price. Yes, it lacks wireless charging and an IP rating, but that can be forgiven considering its lower price tag. The Redmi K20 Pro has the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC and the variants have generous amounts of RAM and storage for their prices. The pop-up selfie camera and an AMOLED display are firsts for a Redmi device.

The Redmi K20 Pro has all the bells and whistles of an affordable flagship. We won’t outright call it a premium flagship since there are still some features that are missing that makes a device premium. Yet, the K20 Pro incorporates all the features that are in vogue this year — a bezel-less display, pop-up camera on the front and triple cameras on the back, a gradient design and flagship performance. If you were wondering, the Redmi K20 Pro is also much more than what the Poco F1 offered. The Poco flagship focused only on performance while the K20 Pro is an all-rounder of sorts. While the price does come close to what other Snapdragon 855-powered flagships ship for, it's still the most affordable flagship you can buy right now that comes with all the bells and whistles that are in vogue this year.

Of course, in best Redmi tradition, the real killer punch is the price. The Redmi K20 Pro starts at Rs 27,999 for the 6GB/128 GB variant. And that makes it easily the most affordable Android flagship out there by some distance. The fact that it enjoys that status without cutting any major design or performance corners makes it all the more formidable. There is competition of course, most notably from the OnePlus 7 duo (yes, yes, we have a comparison coming up shortly), and from the Asus 6z, but right now, the Redmi K20 Pro pretty much stands in a zone of its own, and could well have redefined the term budget flagship. It really is now up to the competition to up its game. Or change it.

While the Redmi K20 Pro is not officially the Pocophone F1’s successor, it has everything it takes to be it. Redmi K20 is a polished device from Xiaomi. The device comes loaded with a premium design language and the display looks crisp. The battery performance is decent and you will face no trouble in day-to-day tasks. The daylight camera performance is good, though low light performance could have been better. In the past when Xiaomi has tried not to “be itself” the results have not been up to the mark. However, with the K20 it does seem to have learnt a lot of lessons and may just have delivered a handset that is a toned-down variant but still packs in a lot that delivers results.

There has been some outrage over the Redmi K20 being overpriced, with many fans and prospective buyers expressing disappointment that the company did not target the sub-Rs. 20,000 segment. Here's the bottom line, though — the Redmi K20 is the most heavily specced and feature-laden ‘non-flagship' phone under Rs. 25,000 in the market right now, And its day-to-day performance is still extremely impressive considering its price.

Finally, to buy the Redmi K20 or not. Short answer, if you have the money go for it. No questions asked. There’s nothing that is offered by competing devices that the K20 does not offer, save for a microSD card slot. We reviewed the more expensive 6GB RAM and 128GB storage variant, but we expect performance to be the on the 6GB RAM, 64GB storage variant as well. We do, however, feel that the imaging experience could be improved through software updates, but we wont hold our breath for Xiaomi to get around to it.

The Xiaomi Redmi K20 is quite a good offering in this price segment. It covers all the features that are currently trending — full-screen design, in-display fingerprint scanner, triple rear camera, and a pop-up selfie camera. The phone comes with a good design, an impressive display, solid performance, capable rear camera, and smooth software. The only thing that could have been improved is the pop-up mechanism and the selfie camera. The Redmi K20 is a complete package and for a price of Rs. 21,990 for the 6 GB RAM and 64 GB internal storage model, it’s a good buy. Other alternatives for this one includes Realme X and Vivo Z1 Pro. If you are still confused between the Xiaomi Redmi K20 and the Realme X, wait for a couple of days as our review of the Realme X will be out soon.

All of this brings us to the most discussed aspect of the Redmi K20: its price. On the surface, this might seem a little odd, for the K20 is basically the K20 Pro with a different processor (which is not too far behind) and a different main camera sensor (which again, is not too inferior). In fact, the phone is the first in the country to feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 chip. However, the thing about the K20 is that it comes with a Redmi branding, which many identify with super affordability, which is basically any figure in the vicinity of Rs. 15,000. The Redmi K20 cost significantly more and crosses the unholy (for some) Rs. 20,000 line, which makes it appear slightly expensive. We do not think the discussion about the price of the Redmi K20 would have been as heated or intense if the phone had come from a brand more closely identified with higher-priced phones like Samsung or Vivo.

The display is crisp and the in-display fingerprint sensor along with pop-up selfie adds some brownie points. The cameras look promising and the user interface is yet to be tested out. As for the competition is concerned, the smartphone will face stiff competition from the likes of Vivo V15 Pro, Oppo F11 Pro, Samsung Galaxy M40 and more.
