The highlight of the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2’s main screen performance was its color fidelity whether viewing still content or watching videos on an unfolded display. Unlike the screen’s well-rendered colors in low light and indoors, however, the device had trouble keeping colors looking natural in bright sunlight conditions because its High Brightness Mode was making colors look flat. When watching HDR10 videos, particularly in low light, brightness levels on the screen were too low, making the content difficult to watch comfortably. The Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 comes with an anti-reflective film on the main screen in order to improve readability when outdoors.

With a DXOMARK Audio score of 121, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 delivered an overall decent performance in our tests when compared to the smartphone market as a whole. However, the results started to look a little less impressive when considering the Mix Fold 2’s large dimensions in its unfolded state, and its high price point. Overall, Xiaomi’s latest foldable is somewhat of a missed opportunity in terms of physical implementation of speakers and microphones, as well as audio tuning. As a playback device, the Mix Fold 2 performed best when listening to music, but it was also a decent option for gaming and movie watching, thanks to sharp attack and good punch across all volume levels. Overall playback quality was fairly poor for a device at the upper end of the Ultra-Premium price bracket. The same can be said for recording, but on the plus side, most audio recordings remained intelligible in windy conditions and were fairly free of artifacts.

The last time I covered a competitor to Samsung’s Galaxy Fold folding smartphones (in the form of the Vivo X Fold) I called the Vivo “bigger and heavier, sure – but the Fold 3 is already too big for a lot of folks. So I kinda feel like this is a case of in-for-a-penny, in-for-a-pound.” Well fortunately for fans of foldables, not everyone is such an absolutist. Xiaomi has somehow found a way to stuff bigger screens than the Galaxy Fold 4 into a phone that’s thinner than the Surface Duo 2 and sleeker than any other large-format foldable. It launched in China in August; I’ve been using it in New York since October; and today I’m taking it across the country for four days covering the MediaTek Summit in Sonoma California. I’m MrMobile and this is the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 review.

With the MIX Fold 2, Xiaomi has proven that it can deliver a foldable that holds its own against the best that Samsung has to offer. The large 6.56-inch cover screen combined with the thin design make the phone better to hold and use than the Z Fold 4, and the inner screen is larger at 8.02 inches. Both screens are among the best you'll find on any foldable today, and the MIX Fold 2 features the latest Qualcomm silicon, delivering incredible power in daily use. You also get flagship-tier cameras that take fabulous photos, and all-day battery life with 67W wired charging. The downside is that the MIX Fold 2 is limited to China, and it misses out on a few foldable-based software features.

The Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 smartphone is awesome when it comes to flagship foldable smartphones. The company also improved several factors from the previous gen foldable phone and those changes are visible in Mix Fold 2 for sure. With this phone, you will attain numerous multi-tasking features and lots of other exciting things, which will help you while playing high-end games to even watching simple YouTube videos. Plus, the UI is customized to support the foldable features with great precision. Furthermore, the crack is not that visible on the foldable screen, while at the same time, the company tries a refreshed design layout that makes this phone more attractive and premium. For an alternative option, you can check the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4. On the surface level, the specs are almost identical and have an equal share of flaws.

And, finally, the video capturing experience was disappointing - both in quality and stabilization terms. Xiaomi usually offers close to excellent video recording experience on its flagship smartphones, and it's beyond us what happened for this Mix Fold 2. So, the Mix Fold 2 is a great foldable device and a good smartphone. We are sure it will find fans across China as it is a country where sometimes software means more than hardware, and MIUI has the upper hand. It is not the best foldable, that's for sure, but it is the thinnest one. And our verdict is quite simple - if you like it, you buy it as it's a worthy device. If its imperfections bother you - look elsewhere. But if you don't live in China, or nearby, we can't in good conscience recommend gray importing it - not like we did the Ultra models. Foldables break a lot more often than regular phones. And if this Mix Fold 2 does crack, you will end up with one fancy paperweight with nowhere to service it.

Finally, should you buy the Mix Fold 2? If this phone was sold globally and was available in your market, I’d say a definitive yes. But because most readers will have to import, this becomes much trickier. Importing will add at least a couple hundred dollars to the $1,300-ish retail price, and you won’t get any warranty, not to mention the game of chance you will play getting full network coverage in your region due to missing bands. In that situation, most buyers are better off getting the Z Fold 4 or hoping Xiaomi launches this globally later. With that said, however, there are phone enthusiasts who would import this in a heartbeat. A former colleague at XDA imported one. I know two people in Singapore who have. And I would import this too if Xiaomi hadn’t given me access to a review device. But we are a very niche group: foldable enthusiasts. Even if most of you reading this will not buy this device, it’s still great that the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 exists because it shows consumers what is possible. Maybe Samsung can get away with its thicker design for another year due to a lack of competition globally.

Of course, the significance of MIX Fold 2 is much more than that. Its birth has pointed out the direction for a number of domestic mobile phone manufacturers who are good at learning. I believe that it will not be long before we see more excellent and practical folding screen mobile phone products.
