For those that want a full features compact laptop but don't want to spend a fortune, the Toshiba Portege R835-P56X is a very attractive option. At just $800, it is hundreds less than much of the competition while also weighing a good deal less. It offers solid performance and excellent storage features as well.

The Portege R835 is truly a standout in the 13.3” screen laptop class, you get so much for the money which explains why this model has been selling like hotcakes. I can’t think of any other 13.3” laptop that uses a metallic body, has 8 hours of battery life, built-in optical drive and Core i5 processor that can be found in the $700 range. It’s not a perfect laptop, I’d like to see improvement in the screen and something done about the keyboard to make it more usable, but you’ll be hard pressed to find something under $1,000 that has the same specs as the R835 so it becomes easier to accept the drawbacks and simply enjoy the features that are truly great.

Any laptop reviewer has a handful of go-to systems ready to recommend at a moment's notice. Recent favorites include Apple's latest MacBook Pros and HP's AMD-powered Pavilion dm1.With three more hours of battery life over last year's model, Toshiba's new R800 series of Portege laptops are hard to beat, even in the highly competitive 13-inch laptop category.

We liked but didn't love the last Toshiba Portege because it ran a little hot and we experienced some problems with the touchpad. Toshiba has addressed those issues with the Portege R835-P56X. The company also beefed up the graphics performance while maintaining more than 6 hours of battery life--without ballooning the price. The R835 isn't as sexy as the Samsung Series 9 or as fast as the ThinkPad X220, but it costs $720 less than the former and $370 less than the latter (as tested). Although the keyboard could be better, those in the market for Windows-powered ultraportable will find the Portege R835 to be a solid value.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Intel HD Graphics oder GMA HD genannte onboard Grafikkarte welche im Package der Core i3/i5/i7 Arrandale Dual-Core Prozessoren untergebracht wird. Je nach Prozessormodell maximal mit 500 bis 766 MHz getaktet (Turbo Boost). Von Lenovo anscheinend auch GMA5700MHD genannt. Die gleichgenannte Intel HD Graphics Prozessorgrafik in den Sandy Bridge Prozessoren basiert auf einer neueren Architektur.

Diese Karten können nur sehr alte und sehr anspruchslose 3D Spiele flüssig darstellen.  Anwendungen wie Office, Internet surfen, Bildbearbeitung oder (SD) Videoschnitt sind jedoch ohne große Einschränkungen möglich.
