Es ist klein und leicht - mit nur 1,4 Kilogramm sogar sehr leicht. Das verdankt das Gerät seinem stabilen Carbonfaser-Gehäuse. Das Z lässt wirklich kaum Wünsche offen. Wer das nötige Kleingeld hat, kann bedenkenlos zugreifen.

Overall, though, we would be glad to use this notebook on a daily basis. If you can do without an optical drive, the Lenovo ThinkPad X200 is even faster and feels sturdier. But if you want a DVD drive for installing software, burning video, or watching movies, this is the machine to get.

From its arrival to our labs to the time where we had to pack it up for return, the Sony VAIO VGN-Z17GN has definitely lived up to our expectations. Its sleek design and attractive looks helped cement our opinion of this drool-worthy notebook, though we would like to point out that it's not 100% perfect (close though). From its cylindrical spine to the isolated keyboard design to the carbon fiber casing, the VGN-Z17GN is well, one heck of a notebook. We're still none too happy about the flimsy feeling screen, but with care, accidents can be avoided. Performance too is another good thing the VGN-Z17GN has in its favor. Our benchmarks showed the unit getting pretty decent scores with a slight oddity with regard to the Quake 4 benchmark.

The 314 x 210 x 33mm dimensions conceal a generous 13.1in display and belie a headline grabbing weight of just 1.43kg. Das Z21ZN ein schickes, wirklich schnelles und vor allem gut ausgestattetes Notebook. Ob UMTS, schnelles Draft-N WLAN, flinke SSD-Festplatte oder dedizierter Nvidia-Grafikchip - alles steht bereits auf der Ausstattungsliste. Zwei USB-Ports sind wenig, doch relativiert der Anschluss für eine Docking-Station dieses Manko ein wenig. Die Verarbeitung bewegt sich, sieht man vom dünnen Displaydeckel und der druckempfindlichen Handballenauflage ab, auf sehr hohem Niveau. Die Tastatur ist sehr gut gelungen, und bis auf die kleine Überempfindlichkeit gibt es auch am Trackpad nichts auszusetzen. Die gezeigte Leistung überzeugt ebenfalls auf der ganzen Linie. Eines der größten Pro-Argumente ist aber definitiv das geringe Gewicht von unter 1,5 Kilogramm. Es dürfte schwer werden, ein ähnlich performantes Notebook zu finden, das so wenig wiegt. Angesichts des hohen Listenpreises von 3.999 Euro muss das aber auch erlaubt sein, denn entsprechend viel erwartet man als Käufer. Dennoch: Es gibt insgesamt wenig zu kritisieren. Wünschenswert wären mehr USB Ports. Ansonsten bleibt der einzige Wermutsropfen der Preis.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Im GM45, GS45 und GE45 Chipsatz (Montevina Plattform) integrierte shared Memory Grafikkarte von Intel. Durch höhere Taktung und mehr Shader ist sie deutlich schneller als die X3100, jedoch immer noch nicht für Spieler empfehlenswert. Kann HD-Videos (AVC/VC2/MPEG2) dekodieren und so die CPU entlasten.
NVIDIA GeForce 9300M G: Überarbeiteter 8400M GS Chip, der weiterhin in 65nm gefertigt wird und durch kleinere Optimierungen eine etwas bessere Performance zeigt.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Core Duo Nachfolger mit längerer Pipeline und 5-20% Geschwindigkeitszuwachs bei 0.5 - 3 Watt mehr Stromverbrauch.
Der Notebook Core 2 Duo ist baugleich mit den Desktop Core 2 Duo Prozessoren, jedoch werden die Notebook-Prozessoren mit niedrigeren Spannungen und geringerem Frontsidebus Takt betrieben. Von der Leistung bleiben gleichgetaktete Notebooks deswegen (und auch wegen der langsameren Festplatten) 20-25% hinter Desktop PCs.
P9500: Der Core 2 Duo P9500 ist ein schneller und sparsamer Mittelklasse Prozessor mit 2.53 GHz und 6 MB Level 2 Cache.
P8600: Schneller, sparsamer und leistbarer Zweikernprozessor. Für die meisten Spiele und Multimedianawendungen ausreichend schnell und mit 25 Watt TDP auch für kleinere Notebooks geeignet.
P8400: Der P8400 ist ein Mittelklasse-Dual-Core Prozessor der Core 2 Duo Reihe. Durch den TDP von 25W eignet sich die CPU auch für kleinere Notebooks. Für ambitionierte Spieler könnte die Leistung jedoch etwas zu gering ausfallen.
P9600: Schnellster Core 2 Duo P-Prozessor mit 25W TDP und dank 2.66 GHz und 6 MB Level 2 Cache relativ schnell.
P8700:
Mittelklasse Zweikern Notebookprozessor mit relativ geringem Stromverbrauch und 3 MB Level 2 Cache. Die schnelleren Versionen besitzen bereits 6 MB Cache.
P9700: Sehr schneller (dank 2.8 GHz und 6 MB Level 2 Cache) und mit lediglich 28Watt relativ sparsamer Doppelkernprozessor der Core 2 Duo Serie.
P8800: Mittelklasse Zweikern Notebookprozessor und schnellster Core 2 Duo mit 3 MB Level 2 Cache. Die schnelleren Versionen besitzen bereits 6 MB Cache.
