Having to hunt down the missing hardware button functionality for home and volume also took some getting used to. But after a day or so of using it, I'm pretty much settled in. I initially thought I would end up returning the Kindle Fire, but now I think I'm going to keep it. I like its media consumption abilities, and I like the compact form factor.

At the beginning of this review I mentioned that I had two tablets already, which I never use. I think the main reason is their size. They are larger tablets, are a pain to take with me places and at that size I am more productive on an Ultrabook. The Kindle Fire HD is different, its small, easy to take with me places and for what I really want to do on it (read & watch movies) it is perfect. The fact that it is tied into the Amazon ecosystem is not really an issue for me and I would consider myself an advanced user. At $199 for the 16GB version I think you are getting a great tablet that is going to do everything you want and has a great ecosystem behind it for constant new content. Although a £129 tablet sounds tempting, the Kindle Fire isn't nearly as good as the Fire HD. It really is a no-brainer to spend the extra £30, since you get an extra 8GB of storage, a higher-resolution screen, better speakers, volume buttons, an HDMI output and twin antennae for the Wi-Fi radio (and Wi-Fi also works on 5GHz, which means it's much faster if you own a compatible router). Bear in mind that Google's Nexus 7 is more versatile than both Kindles and doesn't lock you into buying content from Amazon.

Das Tablet bietet viel Rechenleistung und eignet sich sehr gut zum Internetsurfen. Für mobile Datenübertragung bietet der Kindle Fire HDX einen Micro-SIM-Steckplatz (auch für LTE). Das von Amazon angepasste Android-Betriebssystem Fire OS hat einen eigenen App-Store ohne Zugriff auf Googles Play Store. So fehlen Apps wie beispielsweise die Kartensoftware Google Maps. Die Hauptkamera auf der Geräterückseite hat 3.200 x 2.400 Bildpunkte und schneidet im Test sehr gut ab. Auf der Vorderseite ist eine weitere Kamera mit 1.024 x 768 Bildpunkten angebracht (maximale Auflösung beim Fotografieren). Videos zeichnet sie mit 1.280 x 720 Pixel auf. Der interne Speicher hat eine Größe von 16 Gigabyte und kann nicht erweitert werden, denn es fehlt ein Steckplatz für Speicherkarten. Der Akku hält mehr als elf Stunden durch und ist binnen vier Stunden wieder geladen. Die Gebrauchsanleitung ist auf dem Tablet installiert. Amazon bietet das Modell auch mit 32 beziehungsweise 64 GB Speicher sowie in einer Version ohne mobile Daten an. Auch die WLan-Version wird mit den drei Speichergrößen 16, 32 und 64 GB verkauft. Weitere Unterschiede: Nur das Modell mit mobilen Daten hat einen GPS-Empfänger, seine Akkubetriebszeit beim Surfen sowie die Ladezeit des Akkus ist etwas länger als beim Schwestermodell.

The HDX 8.9 is certainly a safe option. Bigger than an iPad Mini Retina, cheaper than an iPad Air or Galaxy Note 10.1, it's an outstanding middle-of-the-road option, and that's not as much of a contradiction as it would seem. Tidier and simpler than the regular Android option, the HDX 8.9 will please those looking for a no-fuss tablet solution, but if you stretch the budget just a little bit further you could have the best from Apple or Samsung. For this reason the far cheaper HDX 7 makes a lot more sense to us.

For £10 less you can get the iPad mini 2 Retina – granted that’s an inch of screen less, but it does come with the glorious app store in tow. Alternatively the Kindle Fire HDX 7 costs just £199 and is almost the same tablet, barring the significantly smaller display. The Fire HDX 8.9 is a great start for anyone just entering the world of tablets. If you (or whoever you're considering it for) have never had an iPad or Android tablet then you’ll get to grips with the Kindle very quickly -- perhaps more quickly than with the other two. Mayday is undoubtedly the star of the show, it’s like a little genie solving all your tablet frustrations with instant, accurate and friendly advice.

It has its own identity and it has a valuable role to play. Apple described the case of the iPhone 5c as not just “plastic,” but “unapologetically plastic.” Amazon should do the same with the Kindle. It’s unapologetically content-driven. They’ve improved the screen and the sound and the OS features to make this the most pleasant device for enjoying other people’s creativity. It’s definitely not the best full-size tablet for sweating through a full day of work. But it might be the best tablet for recovering from one.
