Just in case, I decided to add this paragraph to explain the circumstances of this text. If it were not for the holidays, you would probably be reading an ordinary review of this smartphone right now. Due to the circumstances that arose, I decided to focus on the most important thing, the photos - and above all, to show them to you, so that you could evaluate them yourself, according to your own expectations. Xiaomi only allowed me to go on a photo trip to Bergen, and also provided the phone for the duration of this short trip. Later tests - this is my initiative only. Xiaomi is not a sponsor of this text and had no influence on its content. The photos you see were taken directly from the phone, without any subsequent processing.

The Xiaomi 14 Ultra display’s performance was average for an Ultra-premium device, helped by its strong results in color and touch. Although the Xiaomi 14 Ultra has a low-level modulation, which reduces flicker, and a high PWM (1920 Hz), its readability was held back by its outdoor brightness results, particularly under sunlight, which trailed some of its competitors like the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. Low contrast levels in all lighting conditions also affected the readability experience. High brightness mode was effective and provided more visible details in dark regions at the expense of overall contrast. The display’s colors were accurate in faithful mode and were rendered very well in most lighting conditions.

Those looking for the best smartphone for photographers have a lot of choice these days. Generally, however we tend to see the same three names being mentioned time and again – Samsung, Apple and Google. However, if you’re happy to look outside those big recognisable brand names (in the West anyway), then there are some fantastic alternatives to be had – the Xiaomi 14 Ultra is one of them. This is quite easily one of the best performing smartphones on the market for photography, with a one-inch sensor and four Leica Summilux lenses really setting it apart from its rivals. The images and videos that it produces easily match and often surpass those from the “bigger” brands. At £1,299 it’s not a cheap proposition by any means, however, you get an awful lot for your money – more than similarly priced Samsung or Apple phones – so it can be considered good value.

The Xiaomi 14 Ultra is, hands down, the best camera phone ever made. Its Leica-powered camera system delivers high-resolution photos that are crisp, vibrant, and free from noise. It also performs incredibly well in low light, besting even the impressive Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. The phone's design and build quality are second to none, though a heavy camera notch makes the Xiaomi 14 Ultra almost impossible to operate with one hand. For that reason alone, we're forced to deny this remarkable handset the full five stars.

The Xiaomi 14 Ultra’s global battery performance rated above average in our database, but its results in autonomy, charging, and efficiency were behind those achieved by its predecessor. When used moderately, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra lasted more than two days, which is below average in our database. However, the device had some good autonomy results in several on-the-go use cases, such as calling and navigation, while other use cases showed an average performance. The Xiaomi 14 Ultra’s strongest results were in the charging experience. Using a wireless charge took only 59 minutes, which is among the best showings in our database. A quick 5-minute charging boost helped the device regain an average of nearly 6 hours of autonomy, which didn’t quite match that of the 13 Ultra, but was also better than some competitors. The device’s charge efficiency registered above average, especially for wireless charging. The discharge currents were slightly above average except for gaming, video streaming in 4G, and calling in 3G.

Xiaomi 14 Ultra is the ultimate smartphone camera. It offers versatility and flexibility that makes it a much more enjoyable camera system to use than mainstream flagship phones such as iPhone 15 Pro, Pixel 8 Pro or Galaxy S24 Ultra. I also found it superior to both Honor Magic 6 Pro and Huawei Pura 70 –the two best phone camera systems I’ve used in 2024 so far. It’s got top-notch camera hardware, a comprehensive suite of software features, Leica colour science, pleasing filters and it delivers consistently brilliant images and video. If you are a photography enthusiast, this is the phone for you.

The Xiaomi Ultra 14 delivered a good performance in the DXOMARK Camera tests, making it the best Xiaomi phone tested to date. However, it did not make it among the very best in our ranking. With a total of four 50MP image sensors, variable aperture, photo, and video HDR modes, as well as a host of other features and modes, the 14 Ultra offers some of the most impressive camera specs in the business. In terms of hardware, not much has changed from the 13 Ultra, though, meaning that most of the improvements over the predecessor are down to refined tuning and software optimization. In our tests, overall photo quality was excellent, with a wide dynamic range, low noise and nice colors. However, the Xiaomi lagged behind the competition in some areas. It did not offer a zero shutter lag and the levels of captured detail were lower than on the best devices in our ranking.

Also, after experiencing the Honor Magic6 Pro, we also have a better appreciation of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra for the finer details. Yes, the Xiaomi phone is S$300 more, but it also comes with a nicer design, better fast-charging compatibility, and a colour-accurate display out of the box. That’s not even considering other perks yet. Details do matter, and Xiaomi 14 Ultra makes it clear why it’s a premium option when other brands can make similar, cheaper rivals. And although it's more affordable than Samsung's Galaxy S24 Ultra, we don't think it's any less capable. The Galaxy S24 Ultra is arguably the more desirable phone and it's AI features are admittedly nice to have, but in terms of nailing the basics and what makes a good flagship Android phone, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra acquits itself extremely well.

Would I advise you to buy the Xiaomi 14 Ultra at $1,600? Yes. Well, in absolute terms, I wouldn't recommend anyone to spend $1,500 on a smartphone. But if you're one of those people who can afford to hesitate between a Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra or an iPhone 15 Pro Max, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra is a truly valid alternative. More than an alternative, I'd say that the Xiaomi 14 Ultra is even a better choice than its two more high-end competitors. If we take photo quality—the most important criterion for the majority of users—as a criterion for purchasing, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra does better than Apple and Samsung. Add to that really fast wired and wireless charging, a finely calibrated screen, solid performance and a very correct update policy, and it's hard not to fall for it. Xiaomi is on a par with Apple and Samsung at the top end of the market, there's no doubt about it.

So, we have another Ultra, now hitting international markets. And that's fantastic. Xiaomi promised a lot of camera chops and it delivers — great details in beautiful photos at the tip of your fingers. And the Pro and Movie modes will keep shutter enthusiasts busy for hours. The battery ensures the phone will last during that time, too. The performance is fantastic and the screen is beautiful. There are very few reasons to not recommend the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, aside from its exorbitant price tag. The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is worth a mention here — it delivers a high quality quad camera, plus software and ecosystem that the modern consumer is used to (and may even want to explore further). Samsung's 7-year software update promise is also nothing to snark at, but if we are to be fair, Xiaomi does give you a total of 5 years of updates, which is absolutely nothing to snark at.

In just about every way, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra is an incredible smartphone. It’s got stunning design and high build quality, an awesome screen that’s got the best of both flat and curved worlds, and flagship-level performance. For my money, it’s the best smartphone for photography on the market right now, even without factoring in the excellent Photography Kit. However, I’d say you do have to really make the most of this part of the phone to fully justify buying one. At £1,299, it’s cheaper than the equivalent Galaxy S24 Ultra and if you’re all about ISO and f-stops then the 14 Ultra is for you. However, you can still get incredible quality for less in the Google Pixel 8 Pro and the regular Xiaomi 14/Pixel 8 if you want a smaller phone.

The Xiaomi 14 Ultra's camera is so much more impressive than anything else available that it's easy to argue away some of the small gripes found here. The camera spec is simply just so far ahead of the competition, so if photography is your main priority then it's an obvious choice. The biggest issues with this phone are a lack of eSIM support and Xiaomi's overbearing HyperOS, but if neither are deal-breakers for you then the 14 Ultra is a premium, powerful smartphone that has a winning screen, plenty of storage, and delivers day-long battery life. If you're after an incredibly capable, versatile camera phone, then nothing can beat it. While it's certainly expensive, it's worth every penny.

On the software side, the rebranded Hyper OS (based on Android 14) remains one of the heavier Android skins on the market and nabs some inspiration from iOS. If you’re coming from another brand, the left/right notification/setting swipe-down shade takes some getting used to, as does the sheer number of settings you can find tucked away in everything from the optional app drawer to a range of display features. I’d hardly call many of the layouts intuitive. Still, Hyper OS gets the job done and more, once you’ve mastered the UI. Unfortunately, there’s an unholy amount of pre-installed software on the 14 Ultra. Between the familiar Google apps, Xiaomi’s tools like Mi Remote, a couple of stores, and smart home apps, to outright bloat like AliExpress, Booking.com, and LinkedIn, I’m glad this model has 512GB of internal storage.

Now, let's go back to the question whether this “Xiaomi phone” is worth a lakh. I stand by my answer: Yes. I think Xiaomi has hit a very sweet spot with the 14 Ultra’s price. And with a bunch of bank offers and cashbacks, at the time of writing the story, the phone could be purchased for about Rs 90,000 online. I think that is a great price for a phone that is so well-rounded.

If the value of a true flagship lies in camera performance, then the Xiaomi 14 Ultra justifies every penny. There are other areas too where the smartphone excels, be it display, battery, build, or even charging speed. Nevertheless, there are areas where Xiaomi could enhance its offerings, particularly in the realm of software experience to compete with the likes of Google Pixel 8 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. We are yet to see a more comprehensive ecosystem from the brand, and that day may not be too far away with the aggressive work on its new Android-based HyperOS. Otherwise, if you seek a camera-focused smartphone with a relatively more affordable price tag than the Galaxy S24 Ultra, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra is sure to impress.

The 14 Ultra is Xiaomi's brand-new flagship Android phone, and while it comes with a suite of top tech like a blistering Qualcomm chip and glorious display, it also has an awesome camera setup that's capable of taking some of the best images I've ever seen from a phone. But it's still good as a phone, too, with stellar performance from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, a glorious display and good enough battery life. And you'd be right to expect good performance, as the Xiaomi 14 Ultra costs £1,299. Add on the £179 photography kit and that comes to the princely sum of £1,478. Xiaomi doesn't officially sell its phones in the US, but that base UK price converts to $1,640. That's a fair step up over the $1,420 it will cost you to put the same 512GB capacity Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra in your pocket.

A superb combination of top-shelf camera hardware, nuanced image processing, and a photographer-friendly accessory kit puts the Xiaomi 14 Ultra in a class of one. Samsung, Apple and Google still eke out wins in some shooting scenarios, but none are as focused or versatile as this. If you’re serious about snapping with your smartphone, you’ll love what it has to offer. Of course this is a fantastic phone everywhere else: the display is a treat for the eyes, the chipset is uncompromisingly speedy, and battery life is very respectable. But then you’d expect as much from a device costing four figures. Anyone who rarely uses their phone for photography will find all of that elsewhere, and for a lot less cash. If you think in focal lengths and ISO values, though? This should absolutely be your next phone.

So! Overall, I truly feel like Xiaomi flagships have matured a lot over the years and have become nigh-perfect! I like how Xiaomi has also taken care of small details on the new Hyper OS! It just feels more evolved! But, it’s the cameras that stand out for me! And if you are a proper camera enthusiast, you can even get yourself the Photography kit worth an extra USD 200 — which opens a lot of doors for more creativity! Xiaomi has also done quite a good job with the pricing too! I got this unit from China at just CNY 6,499, which comes at around USD 900. And even in India, it’s priced at INR 1 lakh, which is much more affordable than the two heavy hitters! So, a good job from Xiaomi in that aspect as well! Factoring all that into consideration, I think the Xiaomi 14 Ultra is a top-tier flagship and deserves to be in the conversation with the likes of Samsung and Apple!

If you take the camera away from the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, it’s a perfectly acceptable modern smartphone that matches the overall performance of the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, the Google Pixel 8 Pro, the Asus Zenfone 11, and other big, expensive Android phones. We can make the same statement about the processor and software, as it plays games and videos without any issues, and I’ve not had any concerns over smoothness or efficiency. It’s the archetypal flagship smartphone we have all come to expect in 2024. But herein lies the Xiaomi 14 Ultra’s problem. The camera is everything, and without it, the phone is unremarkable. It was almost pointless going through the experience of using the phone itself in detail here because it predictably works very well, just as you’d expect for the level and price of the device.

This is always a tricky question with phone reviews: should you actually buy it? For the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, that would be a resounding yes if it was available worldwide. But as you might have expected, it’s not coming to the US. However, it is available across Asia and Europe. So it’s not one of those China-only type releases, thankfully. Here in the US, it does work on AT&T and T-Mobile, but not entirely. I’ve been using it on Google Fi for the past few weeks, and it’s working pretty well. Not perfectly, but pretty close. So if that’s good enough for you in the US, then yes, you should buy it. For those in Europe, however, pricing might make this less of an absolute must-buy. This is a €1500 smartphone. That translates to about $1,628 USD, which is only about $100 less than a folding phone, which the Xiaomi 14 Ultra doesn’t do.

We knew, to a great extent, what to expect from the Xiaomi 14 Ultra. For example, price was always going to be a deterrent, and Xiaomi's approach to selfies hasn't aligned with our tastes for a while. We could even predict the subpar endurance, going off of the 13 Ultra's results. We could have also anticipated its strong points with a fair degree of certainty. A favorite cameraphone in the office, the 13 Ultra didn't leave a lot to ask for, yet Xiaomi did find a few areas to touch up for the 14. Close-focusing telephotos have become the latest trend, and the two ones here are possibly the finest at that, but also excel at a distance. The variable aperture on the main camera is also welcome if you'd like that much control over DoF, though we don't see that as quite the transformational development.

Reviewing the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, a global mega-flagship smartphone boasting the best camera setup in 2024. I've been testing the gaming chops, battery life and everyday HyperOS experience of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra for over a week. Here's my final verdict vs the Samsung S24 Ultra etc, and check out Tech Spurt for more phone reviews! Now, it's the camera tech which really helps this excellent premium phone to stand out. The Xiaomi 14 Ultra is brilliant as a point and shoot device, for photo and video capture, but it's the Pro tools that really boost it. You can record LOG footage with full aperture control in Director Mode. Or get gorgeous 10-bit HDR video in the regular mode. It's a step beyond the Pixel 8 Pro, S24 Ultra, iPhone 15 Pro Max etc. Besides that, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra is a top-class smartphone in every other way. The OLED screen is a stunner (and now practically flat).

And that concludes our very long review of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra. What do you think about this phone? Is it good? Will you buy it? If not, then let us know why and what will you get instead. I do think that the Xiaomi 14 Ultra needs a lot more optimization – particularly software. The operating system seems buggy and caused the battery drain issue, and the cameras are still not up to expectations. The Xiaomi 14 Ultra continues the series' trend of bringing the ultimate camera hardware. This year the main camera uses the new Sony LYT-900 sensor with a variable aperture between f/1.6 to f/4.0. The other three cameras all use Sony IMX858 sensors with fast aperture and large-ish sensors. There is of course the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, and fast charging. The Xiaomi 14 Ultra also includes a photography kit that adds a camera handle and dedicated shutter button the setup.

So, we come to the conclusion of this review. Just like other smartphones that utilizes Sony’s 1-inch type sensor, there is a significant compromise chassis design, weight and dimensions on the Xiaomi 14 Ultra. If you want an impressive camera system like that of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, that will come with a price – not just in pesos but also in grams and millimeters. If you can get past that inconvenience, then you are in for a big treat as the Xiaomi 14 Ultra is all that it promises to be — a very powerful device, impressive display and a camera powerhouse with that unique Leica treatment. Unfortunately, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra will not be officially released here in the Philippines (only the Xiaomi 14 45 has been launched so far). Maybe it’s just too expensive for Xiaomi PH to carry in our market? We can only guess. Nevertheless, it’s one heck of smartphone worthy of the flagship title.

Xiaomi smartphone has been showing their true worth in the premium price segment phones. Their recent release XIaomi 14 Ultra undoubtedly gathered quite a lot of attention with its phenomenal specs the fabulous configuration of hardware and software. In particular, the camera department got praise for better image quality and impressive video recording experience. But at the same time, the company isn’t far behind in releasing its custom AI software. Although, the AI software might not par with the Galaxy AI yet. But still, you are getting decent customization options inside the interface. Not to forget, it’s a flagship phone from Xiaomi, so it means the company brings high-end specs from the start. But what makes this phone stand out from other phones is that you will notice the constant software updates.

Since 2020, Xiaomi has significantly enhanced the competitiveness of its flagship mobile phones by continuously improving imaging technology. The Xiaomi Mi 10 Extreme Commemorative Edition led the way into the high-pixel periscope era, while the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra introduced the ultra-large bottom Samsung S5KGN2 camera, earning the title “Light of Android.” In a groundbreaking move, the Xiaomi Mi 12S Ultra collaborated with Leica, launching the SUMMICRON lens group. The Xiaomi Mi 13 Ultra marked a return to the full-focal-range quad camera and introduced a variable physical aperture structure. The Xiaomi 14 Ultra now boasts the industry’s largest primary lens with the largest aperture ultra-wide angle, upright and periscope dual telephoto, full-focal-range high-pixel four-camera solution, the new Leica optical Summilux system, and the world’s first AI camera Xiaomi AISP.

The Xiaomi 14 Ultra is jumping directly into the deep end of the UK smartphone market, stepping up to competitors such as the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max. This is an area (and a price) where only the best will do, so until I’ve run the Xiaomi 14 Ultra through the Expert Reviews testing gauntlet, it’s hard to know how it’s going to stack up against the competition. At first glance, though, it definitely has potential. The design is slick and sturdy, the internal components are all what you’d expect from a flagship, and the camera system has a lot of promise. I’m far from sold on the software redesign, and I still think that a lack of storage options feels like a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the foot, but if the Xiaomi 14 Ultra does well enough in our tests, these could well be minor flaws that are worth overlooking.

By bringing its superpowered flagship to more regions, including Europe and the UK, Xiaomi is offering a real alternative to those who want to spend over £1000 on an Android phone. This Xiaomi 14 Ultra ticks just about all the boxes, with a mouthwatering 1-inch main camera with variable aperture, an optional camera grip accessory and all the specs and features anyone could want.

It’s still early days, but the Xiaomi 14 Ultra might’ve just raised the bar for smartphone photography. The firm’s partnership with Leica appears to have delivered a superb combination of top shelf hardware and nuanced image processing, which could give Samsung, Apple and Google a run for their money. A flagship-grade display, supremely quick processor and large capacity battery are exactly what I’d expect from a phone costing four figures. Xiaomi’s AI elements are untested for now, though, and I need to spend more time with HyperOS to learn its quirks. I’ve also yet to see what battery life is like in the real world, and haven’t had the chance to compare photo samples against the current class leaders. That means a star rating will have to wait until a full review – but first impressions are that this is a phone that should appeal to any keen photographer. I can’t wait to get my hands on one.

While most of our attention was dedicated to the camera features of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, there’s plenty to like about the actual phone. The design was brought in line with the recent iPhone-inspired trend towards flat edges, but we’ve still got curved glass edges for a better hand feel. The 6.73-inch QHD+ OLED screen delivers just about everything you could want from a display. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is of course present, as is Xiaomi’s fast-charging technology. It’s worth highlighting the insanely fast wireless 80W charging, more than what many other top Android phones get through a charging cable. Unfortunately, Xiaomi hasn’t given the press much time with its new flagship phone, so all of the talk about performance is theoretical for now. But the Xiaomi 14 Ultra does look like a proper monster that goes “ultra” in all the right places — and in some less obvious ones. Whether all the video power is needed for most users, that’s another story.

The Xiaomi 13 Ultra was launched in selected European markets in small numbers last year. The Chinese smartphone manufacturer didn't really dare to enter the ultra-premium segment back then. 2024 looks set to be a different story: The Xiaomi 14 Ultra will be available in larger quantities, and should also be available from your trusted electronics store and provider. The drums of war have begun pounding and this is no coincidence: according to our initial experience, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra is a great smartphone with many strong points in terms of its processor, display, and battery life, as well as having the most exciting camera system of 2024 to date.

So, the Ultra is going global. That's fantastic. It seems like it's the right time for it to do so, too, with a plethora of big upgrades in the camera department, and the super-solid Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. As you can guess, we are quite hopeful and excited that it would deliver on the top-class photography and videography that Xiaomi promised. All that remains now is to hang tight and wait for the tests!
