Erst kürzlich präsentierte Toshiba mit dem Satellite U840W das erste Ultrabook im 21:9 Kinoformat. Ein Notebook speziell für Cineasten oder können auch andere Anwendungen von der neuen Breite profitieren?

Kinogefühl kommt zwar nicht auf – aber der zusätzliche Platz ist trotzdem hilfreich. Das U840W ist kein „Kino-Notebook“, stellt aber für all die Nutzer eine Alternative dar, die mehrere Anwendungen im Blick behalten wollen. Die Gerätepreise sind trotz des exotischen Formats in Ordnung.

The only difference is that the X0310 ships with Windows 7 Home Premium and the X0110 ships with Windows 8. The U840W-X0310 is priced at Rs 63,500 and the X0110 ships at Rs 1,000 more. This could be because of the higher cost of the Windows 8 OS. Considering you can buy a high-end laptop with a quad-core Core i7 processor and discrete graphics for less than Rs 60,000, we find the U840W overpriced. For this price we feel that the Ultrabook would have been a compelling deal if it offered features like discrete graphics, IPS display and touchscreen.

If you’re looking to watch a lot of movie on the go, then the 21:9 ultra-widescreen of the U840W makes perfect sense. However, if most of your media consumption is based around TV shows, then perhaps a regular 16:9 sized ultrabook is what you need, of which Toshiba has a lot of varieties to choose from.

The Satellite U840W is an all-round goody bag combining generally premium build and materials with a usable backlit keyboard and the best speakers we’ve yet heard on an Ultrabook along with good battery life. Its 14.4in 21:9 display is also reasonably impressive and great for split-screen multi-tasking, though being TN rather than IPS/VA it still suffers from poor viewing angles and its glossy finish can be annoying. However, throw in the U840W’s current £600 price, and there’s little that can touch this Ultrabook.

It’s powerful but not practical, looks rugged but isn’t and is designed for movies but can be beaten by many tablets for screen performance. We’re confused about who the target market is for the U840W, especially as it didn’t fit in any of our existing laptop bags and arrives without an Asus-style sleeve. For movie fans, there’s a variety of £600 ultrabooks which still leave change from the U840W price tag for a tablet with a better screen.

The sound quality is admirable, too. We feel a little let down in the slightly-shoddy keyboard and touchpad departments, and it seems these have been neglected in order to focus on the cinematic experience. But what a great experience that is.

Intel HD Graphics 4000: In Ivy Bridge Prozessoren (3. Generation Core) integrierte Grafikkarte in höchster Ausbaustufe. Je nach Prozessor (ULV bis Desktop Quad-Core) unterschiedlich getaktet.
Einige nicht anspruchsvolle aktuelle Spiele können mit geringen Details noch flüssig gespielt werden. Für Office und Video natürlich ausreichende Leistungsreserven.
