The Satellite P845T is already on sale. OK, so file transfer is not lightning quick, and dedicated typists would probably complain about the lack of solid feedback from the keys. But the touchscreen more than makes up for it. Intel’s HD4000 means current titles are only playable at low settings, but heck, touchscreen Windows 8 laptop for $700 – anyone looking for an inexpensive mid-ranger needs a good excuse not to opt for the P845T.

Overall, other than its weight and perhaps the touchy touch pad, there are no deal-breakers with the Satellite P845T-S4310. On the flip side, apart from its excellent audio and respectable battery life, there are no must-haves here, either. Call the S4310 what it is: an affordable mainstream laptop for users who want both a touch screen for Windows 8 and an optical drive for CD and DVD enjoyment.

With its decent performance and feature set, the Toshiba Satellite P845T-S4310 is a good option for anyone on the market for a touch-enabled Windows 8 mainstream laptop. That said, though, it's not nearly as good a value as the Asus VivoBook S400CA-UH51, which delivers similar specs, a touch screen, and a slim ultrabook form-factor while costing $200 less. Moreover, it can't unseat the Lenovo IdeaPad Y480 from its reign as our Editors' Choice for mainstream laptop since the latter sports a beefier processor, discrete graphics, and an exponentially more comfortable keyboard, and all for less than $100 more. Still, the Satellite P845T-S4310 is worth checking out for users who prefer a combination of touch functionality and solid performance.

The Toshiba Satellite P845t-S4310 is a pretty nice computer, with nice speakers, a useable touchscreen, and some expensive-looking design elements. But I can’t help but think that a computer this bulky and under-performing needs a lower price-point. For just a couple hundred more you can pick up an Ultrabook that probably performs better, has the same processor, and weighs less. So unless you’re really on a tight budget, I’d look for something a bit sleeker.

As with the original Satellite P845, the $799.99 Toshiba Satellite P845t-S4310 has an attractive chassis and excellent audio, but now boots in a flash and has a responsive touchscreen. However, this notebook's below-average battery life and finicky touchpad detract from what is otherwise a good value.
