The Xperia 1 VI is a significant change for Sony, bringing the design and display of its flagship in line with other Android phones. While it might sound like a downgrade, the phone benefits as a result. Other highlights include strong Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 performance, excellent battery life and very good zoom and macro photos. However, the rest of the camera experience is a step down from the best camera phones around, while slow charging and occasional overheating issues are frustrating.

When considering the Xperia 1 V, it might be best to think of what as it can offer rather than the hit it will make on your pocket when purchasing it. The Xperia I V sits at the high-end range of price points for this handset displaying Sony's various high-end features and stylish appearance. Currently I have seen this smartphone, with 256GB of ROM and 12GB of RAM, as reviewed priced at £975 from Amazon. Shopping around might bring the reward of a lower cost.

Sony has turned out another brilliant pro-leaning flagship in the Xperia 1 V. The notchless 21:9 4K display is unique for its widescreen movie potential, while this is also the best-equipped smartphone for audiophiles thanks to the rare inclusion of a 3.5mm headphone jack. The biggest improvement this year is to the Xperia 1 V’s camera. With a much larger main sensor and improved image processing, Sony’s camera has some point-and-shoot smarts to match its peerless manual setup, while low-light shooting is also improved. Technically, Sony hasn’t fully addressed our main criticisms of the Xperia I IV. At £1,299, it’s still very expensive (though no longer an outlier), it can still run a little warm, and the 30W charging speed remains way too low for a phone of this calibre. For a relatively small niche of flush media-enthusiasts, however, the Sony Xperia 1 V is flat out the best option on the market.

Xperia One Mark 5 is undoubtedly an exciting phone; A 120Hz OLED 4K display that you can use as a professional camera monitor and of course cameras equipped with continuous optical zoom and eye tracking for autofocus along with dedicated photography and video applications; Or even a headphone jack, a dedicated camera shutter button and a SIM card slot that does not need a pin! You are probably as excited to experience it as we were to review it. But the price of the Xperia 1 V phone is very high; So much so that the Galaxy S23 Ultra looks cheap next to it! Also, using the complicated user interface of this phone’s camera to capture the best images is beyond the patience of many people who just want to take the most colorful and lively photo for Instagram with one click. Maybe if you are a photographer or a filmmaker, Xperia 1 V is the phone of your dreams.

The Xperia 1 V can be considered the ideal smartphone for enthusiasts. While it can serve anyone pretty well, it however is definitely not the smartphone for everyone. If you love to tailor your experience in a smartphone, be it themes or camera controls, this is the smartphone that can satisfy your needs unlike any other out there. The added bonus here is the classic features like the physical shutter key making the whole experience rather unique and attractive in this day and age.

It's clear that - just like its camera strategy - the Sony Xperia 1 V is designed for something of a niche audience. It's too expensive and has a camera system that's pretty complicated - not to mention it doesn't deliver the eye-popping, colourful results you'll find on the more mainstream smartphones, particularly at nighttime. That's not to say I haven't enjoyed using it. The grippy texture is fantastic, as is the 21:9 OLED display and stereo speakers, plus there's a lightweight approach to software that I really appreciate. Add that to the practical inclusion of a physical audio port, storage expansion and waterproofing, and you get a phone that definitely ticks a lot of boxes for the right person. If you find the true-to-life camera results preferable to the mainstream saturated approach, or if you want those professional camera and music tools at your disposal, this could absolutely be the phone for you.

Whether to buy the Xperia 1 V all comes down to budget, and at $1,399, you’ll need a healthy one. The Xperia 1 V excels as a multimedia powerhouse for both avid content consumption and captures, and the improved camera setup makes this the best Xperia to date. Still, the lack of an upgrade commitment, some aging hardware choices, and barebones software (outside of a few apps) leaves us with pause for thought before offering a slam-dunk recommendation. There’s no denying that you can buy a lot of phone for less money from the mainstream players. The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra ($1153 at Amazon) and Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max ($1099 at Best Buy) might not be quite the full multimedia powerhouses the Xperia is, but they’re not far off.

Sony’s best phone in 2023, is an excellent performer, but costs more than a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, and that’s a problem for it. The phone is beautifully made and a refined companion to keep in your pocket, its combination of computing performance and sharp cameras putting the Sony Xperia 1 V near the top of the 2023 smartphone charts, but you just might find your thoughts drifting to other flagships.

The Sony Xperia 1 V is the best Sony phone for 2023. It’s a great example of how Sony’s approach to phone design is a little different to that of the competition. And a big part of this approach is keeping a lot of older things the same as they always were. This handset is a lot like the Xperia 1 IV, but with a new processor and some other tweaks. If you bought last year’s model, you should feel pretty good about that. But is it dynamic enough to compete with phones like the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and iPhone 14 Pro Max? That part is a little less clear. It doesn’t drip in that sense of “newness” that propels a lot of shiny, expensive tech, which may lead you to question if it is really worth the high asking price. However, it is going to appeal to a key kind of tech traditionalist. Its camera software is also inspired by Sony’s dedicated cameras, offering a completely different feel to most of the best camera phones. Is it better?

In a way, you’ve got to admire Sony for keeping going in a market where it attracts so few sales. I pushed for how well the Xperia 1 V is doing in terms of units shifted, and was told this information can’t be disclosed, but it is “good”. Without any hard data, it’s quite possible that “good” in this context means “for a Sony”. Across the globe, Apple accounts for about a third of smartphone sales, Samsung another third, and everybody else battles for the remaining third. In several markets, Sony has about 1% of the market – it seems unlikely that the big two need to feel worried about the 1 V just yet. Although it has addressed some criticisms of its flagship model, it has done little to address many of the others.

The Sony Xperia 1V provides everything a flagship smartphone should and then some more. The gorgeous display with its vibrant colors has unique to this smartphone. It features an industrial design that is protected by Aluminum housing and the toughest Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for the screen. It also has a one-of-a-kind camera system with a unique sensor that is specifically optimized for this smartphone. If you want the best of what smartphone technology has to offer, this is the smartphone to get. However, Sony smartphones are not available in every region and if you happen to live in some place where Sony doesn’t sell its smartphone, then you should look for a different smartphone. The device has flagship performance, while the only thing it lacks is the higher nits brightness support.

While the Sony Xperia 1 V can honestly boast some impressive hardware, a lot of that splendour is, if we’re being quite honest here, a varying degree of repeat performance. The good news is that that said performance is still pretty impressive, to the point that I can still recommend it as a solid option to avide mobile photographers, even with its ludicrous price tag. To bring up another point, its asking price of RM6,399 is also makes the Xperia 1 V the most expensive Xperia smartphones that Sony has, to date. And while the brand does love to argue that its price tag is no less unreasonable than the ones commanded by brands like Samsung and Apple, you would think that the least it could do is provide a USB-C cable or even one of its specially designed casings, but no. Even with its new packaging, all you’re getting is the phone, and nothing else.

Sony has doubled down on its unusual decision to pitch the Xperia 1 series firmly at creatives who already own Sony gear. If you shoot with Sony cameras and want a phone with the same feel – and a few specific compatibility features – then you may well love the Xperia 1 V. But that doesn’t describe me, and it won’t describe most people. For just about anyone else there’s little reason to pay more for a phone that often delivers less thanks to a complicated camera and slow charging. The only real area it excels is its 4K display, but that’s old news now and of limited use – there’s a reason no other phone manufacturer has ever bothered to equal it. Sony’s hardware remains as slick as ever, but at this price there’s little reason for most people to put up with the compromises.

The Xperia 1 Mark V is a high-quality and powerful smartphone. How unreasonable is it to buy Sony's latest flagship for $1,399? This is not so much due to the price, which you can definitely obtain at a cheaper price point or via mobile contracts—but rather due to the Xperia 1 Mark V's biggest shortcoming. Software support of two major Android updates and three years of security patches are simply not up to par with the rest of the industry. But somehow that is also so Sony. Why launch a perfect product on the market if you can't also include a few tiny and major slip-ups? Why not make a smartphone that is 16.5 cm long, developed in a country where people have rather small hands? And why include a telephoto camera with enough sharpness and a sensible focal length if it can zoom in a bit instead?

The Sony Xperia 1 V is a brilliant phone for Sony Alpha camera users, photo and video enthusiasts who want loads of control over their camera system, or headphone fans who want a pro-grade flagship to plug into. For everyone else, though, it's too expensive. To really compete with the best from Apple and Samsung, Sony either needs to out-perform, or undercut them, but in many key areas it does neither. The Xperia 1 V screen is perfect for cinematic content but is too tall and narrow to get the best from most other media, games, and phone tasks. It doesn't get as bright as some competition, and the lack of a variable refresh rate matched with that 4K resolution hurts battery life when set to a smooth 120Hz. The phone's camera is superb for pros who want control, but it doesn't have the best zoom or noise-handling in automatic mode, which most users will default to.

Sony once again makes a case for its 4K flagship phone by providing yet another Xperia 1 that nails picture, sound and features. The unique form factor still won’t appeal to everyone, and there are some Sony-specific software quirks, but they can easily be overlooked in favour of this phone’s performance. This is still undoubtedly a phone for AV enthusiasts. If you are serious about taking your movies and music on the go, you will be hard-pressed to find a better alternative.

The Sony Xperia 1 V is a superb phone that barely puts a foot wrong. It’s lightning-fast with a great screen, enviable battery life and a superb camera array. You might quibble with the design, which remains an acquired taste, but it does everything exceptionally. The price, however, remains so out of kilter with the market and Sony’s minnow-like status in it that you can’t imagine it giving the Apples, Samsungs and Xiaomis of this world much cause for concern.

Much like Motorola, I appreciate that Sony is out here trying something new with its approach to smartphones. If you've spent most of the last few years focusing your attention on Samsung and Google — or even Apple — it can feel like the entire market has stagnated. Sony's phones have too, to an extent, relied on recycled designs from a pre-pandemic era. But combining fan-favorite features in a device designed for content creation remains, as ever, a smart move on the company's part. Not everyone likes Google's photo processing, and building a smartphone from the ground up to focus on manual controls over all else is a unique approach. It's just too bad that the overall package doesn't come together. At $1,400, neither the ease of use nor the overall smartphone quality are quite there.

Reviewing the Sony Xperia 1 V after using it as my full time phone, including a real life camera test, gaming performance, battery life and beyond. The Sony Xperia 1 V is a big improvement vs the Mark IV, offering a proper point and shoot photo experience, cooler running and general upgrades. But is it the best phone for you in 2023, over the Samsung S23 Ultra, iPhone 14 Pro etc? If you want a smartphone camera that can boost your pics to make them look stunning with zero effort, the Sony Xperia 1 V isn't your best choice.

So, the Sony Xperia 1 V is a good phone — it's a really, really good phone. It's very nice to look at and hold, it has a camera system that is well above average, supported by custom apps that give you that "real camera feel" with their many knobs, buttons, and tidbits. It performs great and, thankfully, doesn't seem to have overheating issues. Its speakers are great, its screen is lovely to stare at. We could knock it for its battery life, but since we found that it gets us through the day, we don't mind it too much. But combine that with a price-tag that is well above other premium products on the market, and we can't help but ask "Why?".

The Sony Xperia 1 V boasts a major camera upgrade vs the Mark IV, namely a fresh 24mm Exmor T sensor which can apparently take better night shots. Hopefully my unboxing and review of the Sony Xperia 1 V will be live soon but here's a run through of all of the big specs, features and upgrades. As always, it's the Alpha camera tech that's most compelling on this 2023 Sony flagship smartphone. While the ultra-wide and telephoto zoom lenses appear very similar to the IV, the Xperia 1 V serves up an all-new primary sensor that's larger than before. You can shoot 12MP pics with improved low light performance, according to Sony. And also up to 4K 120FPS video, using all three lenses. Other improvements include that Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, pumped-up stereo speakers and a new grippy deisgn. Are you tempted by the Sony Xperia 1 V? It'll cost you around £1299 when it hits the UK at the end of June, so get saving/organ harvesting now! The Sony Xperia 1 V is an excellent smartphone, something we've come to expect from Sony. In addition to the new main camera and upgraded chipset, it also brings improved thermals and Night View for all cameras. There are also thoughtful updates on the design, speaker system, and battery life. The Xperia 1 V impressed us right out of the box with one of the greatest smartphone designs we've experienced lately - solid, well-protected, lightweight, and with the best grip on the market. Then comes the excellent 4K OLED HDR10 screen, it's a feast for the eyes. It is color accurate, too, and supports 240Hz touch response and 120 refresh rate, which no longer has to turn off due to overheating like on the Xperia 1 IV! We only wish it had a dynamic refresh rate management. The front-facing speakers on the Xperia 1 V are also something you have to experience for yourself to appreciate them.

That said, this remains a no-compromise handset aimed squarely at creatives who know their way around a camera – and particularly those who shoot video, or who appreciate the Sony’s burst shooting abilities. Rivals also zoom further and pack in more creative modes to appeal to casual snappers. So once again, Samsung, Apple and Google fans aren’t going to be lured from their Galaxys, iPhones and Pixels.
