Sony hasn’t changed direction with the Sony Xperia 1 IV, but it still offers several features you don’t get elsewhere. It’s a top-tier phone with a headphone jack, expandable memory and an unusual take on what a smartphone camera should feel like. It has an optical zoom lens and multiple apps that focus on manual control for stills and video. While other phones offer the same controls, the Sony Xperia IV spreads them out to make them easier to use – much as they may seem intimidating at first. However, actual image quality is mixed. Image processing lags behind the best, the preview image in the app is poor, and the limited sharpness of the zoom lens limits the appeal of the super-advanced sounding zoom. The Sony Xperia 1 IV also suffers overheating issues and costs a small fortune. While it’s a great phone, you should have a limited tolerance for such problems at this price.

Sony seems to be OK with that, as are Xperia fans. But that’s all a bit of a shame because the Xperia 1 IV has a lot of really great ideas that more consumers should be in a position to enjoy. I don’t want the Xperia 1 series to lose its unique identity and excellent features, but it needs to find a way to cut through a little closer to the center ground. Unfortunately, a sky-high price tag and pursuit of the niche at the expense of familiarity are running the latest Xperia down a completely different track.

With a DXOMARK Camera score of 118, the Sony Xperia 1 IV delivered a fairly balanced performance in our tests, achieving decent results in photo, zoom and video when the light conditions were not too difficult. However, it could not quite match the best rivals in the Ultra-Premium price segment. In photo mode, the camera generally captured nice pictures, with good exposure and natural texture rendering. The device’s tele lens with a variable focal length from 85-125mm (35mm-equivalent) is a stand-out feature and delivered good results in our tests, making tele zoom capture the Sony’s strong point. In video mode, our testers liked the accurate and smooth autofocus, as well as the decent video stabilization. Apart from the more sophisticated tele zoom setup, the Xperia 1 IV’s camera hardware is mostly identical to its in-house rival Xperia 5 IV. This said, despite the similar camera specifications, overall image quality and camera performance were not quite the same and the Xperia 1 IV’s overall score is one point lower than the Xperia 5 IV. Differences were mainly noticeable in color and autofocus where the Xperia 5 IV delivered better results. On the other hand, the flagship Xperia 1 IV was better in the zoom category.

You have to admire how stubbornly Sony has stuck to its enthusiast’s brief with the Xperia 1 IV. It’s doubled down on many of the talking points of the Xperia 1 III, including an even more flexible and pro-friendly camera system. It also stuck with its unique widescreen 4K display, which offers the best canvas for mobile movie-watching, while audiophiles continue to be better catered for here than with any other flagship phone. However, the Xperia 1 IV’s stamina – while improved in general terms – still suffers a little under load, which could be related to a tendency to run slightly hot. Factor in a casual point-and-shoot camera experience that remains uncompetitive, and an even higher price tag, and this is unlikely to be the year in which Sony attains crossover success with its uncompromising flagship vision.

The Sony Xperia 1 IV offers good display performance overall, with accurate colors both indoors and in low light. Its excellent control of motion means that there are no frame drops to mar the user experience when watching videos or when playing video games, and it is very pleasantly smooth in every use case. Its brightness is too low under sunlight and in low light, however; and while the device has good color fidelity when viewed on axis, a strong green cast appears when viewing content on angle. We put the Sony Xperia 1 IV through our rigorous DXOMARK Display test suite to measure its performance across six criteria. In this test results summary, we will break down how it fared in a variety of tests and several common use cases.

I can sum up the Sony Xperia 1 IV in about six words: it’s a year-on-year update. In keeping with its own tradition, it’s the kind of upgrade that you see phone makers install into their next flagship since they were unable to do so with the last one. Unlike most smartphone makers that have the tendency to uproot and overhaul the design and features of their smartphones, I would say that the Xperia 1 IV is a testament to Sony’s discipline and, to a greater degree, dedication in adding meaningful upgrades to their phone. Of course, that is assuming that moving forward, the next generation of Xperia 1s will still retain this true optical zoom feature. To reiterate the point, I had a lot of fun playing with the Xperia 1 IV’s true continuous optical zoom function and much like the Pro-I, it had me actively seeking out subjects to snap pictures of. So, if you’re looking for something different than what Samsung, OnePlus, or even Oppo is offering, and you don’t mind the exorbitant RM6099 price tag that comes with it, you could always give this phone a shot.

Is the Sony Xperia 1 IV a good phone? Absolutely. So should you buy it? Only if you’re after something very specific and are prepared to pay for it. As we’ve come to expect from Sony, the Xperia 1 IV is a multimedia powerhouse — packed with sought-after audio and video features, bundled together in a lightweight software shell. 2022’s model leans heavily into the content creator angle in a bid to set itself apart from its predecessor. There are plenty of nice touches to its revamped apps that finally allow them to reach their potential, and a free year of Bravia Core is a positive sign of the sort of tie-ins Sony should be leveraging to add value. This is the best Xperia ever, but it’s only a small upgrade and the phone isn’t alone in vying for your hard-earned cash.

With a DXOMARK Audio score of 121, the Sony Xperia 1 IV delivers a fairly average performance and cannot quite keep up with the best in its class. In Playback it delivers fairly consistent audio quality across all use cases, but with voices in dialogues sounding veiled and unclear it cannot really be recommended for watching movies with the built-in speakers. The phone benefits from a warm and mellow sonority and it’s virtually impossible to occlude the speakers with your hands while holding the phone. But our testers also noticed a few issues. In terms of tonal balance, there is a loss of information in the midrange area; compression impairs dynamics at all volume levels, and distortion can be severe even at minimum volume. The device struggles in the volume category, with inconsistent volume steps and a too quiet minimum volume. It also appears to start playing back sound in mono until the second speaker slowly fades in with a few seconds delay, which can be slightly irritating. When using the Xperia 1 IV as a recording device it does best for main camera and selfie video but audio quality is close when recording voice memos. Timbre is natural if a bit thin in most use cases and Dynamics are good. Background sound quality is well preserved and user hand position on the device has no impact on recording quality. Our testers observed a pumping lower treble at high sound pressure levels, though, and the Sony lacks an audio zoom feature which is pretty common on other devices in its class.

The Sony Xperia 1 IV showed poor autonomy when tested in default settings during the typical usage scenario tests. Its performance on-the-go was decent when calling or taking photos and videos, but when it came to scrolling on social apps, the autonomy fell drastically to one of the lowest levels we have measured to date. When tested in calibrated mode, the Sony Xperia 1 IV had decent autonomy in the calling test as well, but it struggled a lot when streaming videos, where it had one of the lowest autonomy readings in our database. The gaming and music streaming use cases came with poor autonomy, too. On the charging side, the Xperia 1 IV didn’t show a great performance either. The 30W took 2 hours to fill up the large 5000 mAh battery, and only provided 2 hours and 40 minutes of autonomy after a 5-minute charge. The wireless experience was average, taking 2 hours and 18 minutes to fully charge the device. The charge efficiency was poor, but the residual consumptions of both wired and wireless chargers were low, consuming a very small amount of power. Discharge efficiency was also poor, with the Sony Xperia 1 IV draining very high discharge currents during use cases like gaming, music streaming, GPS navigation, and especially video streaming, showing that it is not well-optimized for such usage.

The Sony Xperia 1 IV is an iterative improvement over the III, which tightens up some of the problems but still falls victim to a lot of the same issues. There is some clear thermal throttling that stops the stellar Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset from operating at its best, the long design will not be for everyone and let’s be honest — packing a 4K display in something this small provides a barely noticeable improvement at the behest of an extra bit of battery juice. But for camera pros and Xperia fans, these issues are easily forgiven in what is a cracking phone for photography and entertainment!

The Sony Xperia 1 IV is a premium smartphone with a premium price that's capable of capturing images with true-to-life colour. The continuous optical zoom is something a bit different with the telephoto lens moving between 3.5x and 5.2x but the results aren't really any better than those we've seen from other smartphones that don't have continuous optical zoom built in. We also experienced the occasional gremlin causing problems with the UI and the smartphone struggled with heat management. The display is great, though, and the battery life will keep you capturing photos all day.

Sony clearly has a very specific target market in mind but focusing on a small user base leaves the broader package struggling against experiences available elsewhere. For instance, serious gamers will be left wanting by the lackluster sustained performance, the brand’s computational photography smarts still lag behind for quintessential point-and-shoot use cases, and Sony’s two OS/three-year security update pledge is not great. We’d expect at least another year of support, if not two, when paying top dollar. In the end, the Sony Xperia 1 IV is even harder to justify than its already pricey predecessor. There are plenty of little quality-of-life improvements, from live streaming to camera eye-tracking and a variable focal length zoom, but they’re not fundamental enough to warrant yet another price increase — let alone such a sharp one in the US. You don’t have to be a Sony fan to appreciate this is a lovely phone, but the lack of major changes makes a discounted Xperia 1 III a better pick today.

Topping last year’s Sony Xperia 1 III must have been a daunting task, so Sony has potentially taken the easy route by taking the best parts of the III and just making them a bit better. Now while that may sound like a negative, it's really not; the design is sharper, the screen is brighter, the sound is punchier – improvements across the board. While it may not be the most inspirational generation jump we’ve ever seen, it's still a phone that ticks all the boxes to make it an ideal companion for small screen AV use. The Xperia 1 IV is an excellent enthusiast choice for those looking to squeeze the best AV and music listening performance out of their smartphone.

Sony has extended its Xperia range with a flagship handset that echoes its predecessors in terms of design and specifications. The Xperia 1 IV's 21:9 screen aspect ratio and 4K resolution will be welcomed by many, while the telephoto camera's true optical zoom is interesting. However, the multiplicity of camera apps may confuse some users. In the end, even with all its plus points, it must be said that the premium-priced Sony Xperia 1 IV isn't a handset with mass appeal.

The Sony Xperia 1 IV keeps much of the same approach as the Xperia 1 III. The camera is designed to appeal to those wanting to avoid AI and over-processing, with lots of manual options - but lacking basic point-and-shoot functions to make it competitive in all conditions. Sony has long since accepted its flagship phones aren’t aimed at everyone; they’re proper devotee gadgets, with features other brands have kicked to the curb. The Xperia 1 IV is the latest evolution of that. This is a phenomenally capable flagship, with exceptional performance, all-day battery life and a cinematic 4K display. It’s also purpose-built for photographers, who will love the expansive manual shooting modes, rapid burst shooting and stellar image quality across all lenses. But while the seamless optical zoom is technically impressive, and surely the future of smartphone cameras, the limited magnification range restricts its appeal. Ultimately it won’t steal mainstream customers away from the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra or iPhone 13 Pro Max, which are far happier to hold your hand on the photography front. It’s not such a leap forward that Xperia 1 III owners need to think about upgrading, either, and thermals are a concern. But fans willing to pay the hefty cost of entry aren’t going to be disappointed.

If you have the budget to buy the latest-generation camera technology, the Sony Xperia 1 IV smartphone is a great deal. But compared to other flagship phones, the phone doesn’t have as many appealing factors as Samsung or other flagship brands. However, if you are a true fan of Sony, you should check out this phone in the meanwhile. On the other hand, if you are looking for an alternative option, there are two recommendations that are worth your money. The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra brings an impressive set of specs and features that any android smartphone can deliver, while there’s iPhone 13 Pro with dynamic video recording. But, the Xperia 1 IV can be picked for the best camera manual and realistic camera experience.

In a sea of similar-looking and feeling smartphones, I have a natural respect and fondness for Sony for thinking outside the box, for sticking to its guns, for zigging where others zag. To be honest, I still think something like the Google Pixel 6 Pro or the Vivo X70 Pro Plus can grab a better shot most of the time, but I like that the Xperia 1 IV challenges me to make the adjustments needed to find better exposure in a shot. But in between the still sub-par battery life (caused by the unnecessary 4K display), thermal issues, and a very high $1600 retail price, the Xperia 1 IV is hard to recommend to anyone but enthusiasts. The price has rightfully garnered some scoff from those who follow smartphone news, but honestly, people into cameras won’t be deterred by the price, because camera gear is expensive. My 20mm lens for my Sony camera alone is $1,200. A brand name Manfrotto tripod can easily go for $800. A camera bag, $300. To that group, $1600 for a phone isn’t high. But that group is a niche, and the Xperia 1 IV is a niche phone.

Despite all these flaws, we found the Sony Xperia 1 IV an appealing smartphone with great potential and skills, especially when in the hands of camera professionals. We believe Sony will work out some of the throttling issues as this is a pre-production phone, and every aspect of it is worth it. We really liked this Xperia in spite of its issues, and we see no reason why not to get one. If you find it complicated or overengineered or cannot forgive some of its shortcomings, look elsewhere.

The Sony Xperia 1 IV is meant to be the one-stop Sony flagship for 2022. Packed to the brim with cutting-edge hardware and the latest features Sony has to offer. It’s not quite over-the-top like the Xperia PRO-I, with its 1.0-type sensor, but it’s obvious that the Xperia 1 IV is flying very close to the super-premium PRO-I. Sony wants this to be a smartphone for creatives, and that’s immediately apparent when you see that there are three different camera apps and a plethora of manual controls. Its 120 Hz, 4K display and meaty stereo speakers are there to help you enjoy any media you may wish. The light weight and grippy design make it an excellent everyday carry. And it’s kind of amazing that Sony keeps the headphone jack on its phones, despite the fact that the company has a plethora of wireless headphones that it would probably be more than happy to sell to you. I know, it’s weird, but I have to give props that this very basic connector is included on this very premium phone. However, at the asking price, it’s kind of hard to recommend the Sony Xperia 1 IV.

It just doesn’t seem fair. You shouldn’t get plaudits from reviewers year after year saying you’re "one of the most-improved phone brands" … without eventually becoming an easily-recommendable phone brand.
