Subnotebook, Office-Freund oder Consumer-Spiegel ? Eigentlich passen alle drei Begriffe auf das Samsung Q310. Eine perfekte Einordnung treffen die Interessenten jedoch selbst. Unser Test zeigt sich mit guten Werten für den Mobilitätsfaktor. Gute Akkulaufzeit und ein angenehmes Gewicht. Gegen eine Outdoor-Nutzung sprechen das spiegelnde Display sowie die geringe Ausleuchtung und magere Kontraste. Für einen Preis von 1000 Euro erwarten wir in diesem Bereich einfach mehr. Das Chassis im Crystal-Look und Red Eclipse-Design spricht vor allem die junge, frische Generation an. Abseits vom schlichten Matt-Look setzt Samsung auf lackiert schwarze Oberflächen. Diese ziehen Fingerabdrücke zwar magisch an, für die schnell Reinigung wird jedoch gesorgt.

There's plenty to like about the Q310. It's small, packed with features and has a decent processor. The only real disappointment is the choice of graphics card, but at this price you'd be hard pushed to find a laptop with better 3D performance. In short, if you're looking for a portable yet powerful laptop and are happy forgoing the latest games, at this price the Samsung Q310 is well worth a close look.

Aside from the rough edges and overabundance of plastic, the other complaint people will have with the system is that there are a lot of glossy surfaces. These might look nice in the showroom, but after a few days of real use the notebook can look pretty dirty. It’s easy enough to clean off, but it will be a constant annoyance. Past that Samsung’s Q310 is a contender and while it’s not the cheapest option available, there is a lot to like about it. When it came to general use, the Q310 ended up being a nice 13-inch notebook. It’s not particularly small, but it’s easy to get around, and while it’s not super tough it’s built well enough. Performance is in keeping with a notebook in both its price and size categories and it ran Vista without any problems.

If you’ve an eye on gaming, the Q310's 9200M GS graphics will no doubt disappoint, but the P8400 processor managed to push through some decent benchmark scores and at £699 you’re getting a fair amount of tech for your money. Build quality and aesthetics aren’t as spectacular as Samsung would have you believe, but despite our grumbles it’s hard to level any serious complaints at the Q310. Ultimately, it’s great value for money and would suit those who baulk at the thought of a netbook but are watching their pennies.

Although the Q310 isn’t a bad system, Samsung will have to work a little harder to compete in this fierce market. Its solid mix of features is a good start, but with Toshiba undercutting its price and outperforming its scores, it's tough to justify buying the Q310. On the other hand, if you can get it for less than $1,100 (we’re already seeing it for as little as $1,204 in some places), you should jump at the chance.

The Samsung Q310-34P is one of the better-designed 13-inch notebooks we’ve tested, and it offers good performance. However, the business-oriented $949 Lenovo ThinkPad SL300 offers nearly double the endurance of the Q310-34P (without charging an arm and a leg for an extra-capacity battery) and the $200 cheaper HP Pavilion dv3510nr features an extra gig of RAM, discrete Nvidia graphics, and a backlit keyboard (although it lasts an hour less on a charge). If good looks and an excellent Vista experience is what you want, the Q310-34P is a tempting option, but other 13-inch notebooks offer better bang for your buck.

On paper the Q310 is almost identical to the Q210, with the only noticeable differences being the bigger display, extra 1GB of RAM and a slight change in port placement. However, with exactly the same native resolution as the 12-inch Q210, the effect of the bigger screen is minimal, while the 1GB is wasted on 32-bit Vista. In short, we'd recommend saving some money and opting for the slightly smaller Q210, which is now available for just £599.
