So that’s all for my full review of the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6. And if I had to summarize everything I feel about this phone in two words, I’d say it’s “tastefully boring”. Like… I see its appeal and I would never take it away from anyone, but I would also never stand in line for it. The Fold 6 is a perfectly fine foldable, a perfectly sophisticated and well-engineered machine that’s unfortunately just not that memorable. There’s so much Samsung could’ve done, there’s so much the competition has shown what’s capable of this form factor. But it’s a little sad to see how Samsung is still playing it safe and relying on its brand power more than anything. And at this point, I’m just waiting for Samsung to go all out on its foldable phones I guess.

But it's no longer top dog, with the OnePlus Open, Vivo X3 Fold Pro and other big rivals. Not to mention Google's incoming Pixel 9 Pro Fold! Camera fans will find the Galaxy Z Fold 6 doesn't have Samsung's best optics slapped on, despite that high asking price. It can't compare to the S24 Ultra for night shots and video, although for most other situations this foldable is worthy. Battery life is another area where the Samsung Z Fold 6 doesn't hold up to rivals, and recharging is sadly slow as well.

It has been 6 years since we first saw the Galaxy Fold. The Galaxy Z Fold6 has certainly reached maturity. There’s not much else we wish it had. If there was, am sure it has yet to be developed an incorporated into foldables. For now, this is the best Samsung can offer in this category and that’s enough for me. Perhaps, the only thing we care all wishing for is that these foldables become more affordable just like all the other smartphones in the market. For now, they’re still in the “most premium” tier. Personally, I think the OnePlus Open is the ideal foldable design, and it’s about halfway between the tall and skinny Z Fold 6 and the wide and short Google Pixel Fold.

I tear my hair out when I see some reviews devote three paragraphs to the fact that the Z Fold 6 is 14 grams lighter. Isn't that insane? With performance, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy performs just as well as you'd suspect. The Fold 6 is fast and snappy, as I have yet to run into any game-breaking slow-downs, save for when I'm trying to emulate Switch games. But again, more on that in the full review. Although I talked about a lot here, there's still so much more that I want to cover, such as Samsung DeX, the cameras, and gaming. Even still, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 has managed to surprise and impress, despite me having basically written it off before Samsung announced it. I don't know what else I'll find in my testing, but be sure to reach out if there's something specific you would like to see covered.

Considering that Galaxy AI has already come to last year’s Samsung foldables, I’m not counting that as a reason for people to fork out on the Galaxy Z Fold 6. The refinement of the design and generally tighter build are both positives but I remain unconvinced that they warrant the extra £50 – on top of what was already an exorbitant price tag. I know that it sounds like I’ve already written the Galaxy Z Fold 6 off but we’ll reserve final judgement for the full review. Display testing, performance benchmarks, camera samples and battery life results may well end up being so impressive that they claw back a positive review. After this first hands-on, however, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 feels like Samsung is asking too much and delivering too little.

It's a good deal more expensive than the standard Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, and we'll concede now that nearly £2000 is a lot to spend on a smartphone – even one that can do all of the fancy things of which the Fold is capable. If it can deliver on its many promises, though, the signs are good. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 costs $2,564 CAD, an increase from the Z Fold 5, which costs $2,399. At face value, even with all the upgrades, I can’t say whether the Z Fold 6 is worth the price increase, but I’m interested in finding out. The Z Flip 6 also increased to $1,462.99 from $1,299. Again, I can’t say if this price increase is worth it without putting the handset through its paces, but considering it mostly received quality-of-life updates, I doubt it. I love foldable smartphones, so I will spend a lot of time with both handsets, especially the Z Fold 6. I’m curious to see whether the wider screen is enough to make it stand out against the OnePlus Open. I would also like to see if the Z Flip 6 can compete against the Moto Razr+.
