Soweit so gut. Doch was macht das Modell wirklich besser?

So if you’re having doubts about the durability of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5, then there’s no need to worry. Samsung has made it a lot more durable especially compared to the phone’s predecessors. Specifically, the screen no longer lifts and no additional creases were made. The hinge is more durable too, and doesn’t feel like the two halves are coming apart. With that, you can have peace of mind if you plan on buying a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 right now. For reference, prices for the Galaxy Z Flip currently start at PHP 58,491 for the 8GB+256GB variant on the Samsung Philippines website. This means the phone is being offered at a discounted compared to when it first launched. You can also save up to PHP 49,000 with Samsung Trade-In.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 should be a perfect foldable flip phone. Why? The pitch from Samsung is a pretty simple one. It kept everything that worked so well for last year’s Flip, made the cover screen much more useful, added a new processor, and created a hinge that lets the Flip 5 fold completely flat when it’s shut. And, yes, the price is exactly the same. So, is the Z Flip 5 perfect? It’s really close, but not quite.

As the title says: the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is flippin' great. In terms of design, build and visual appeal it's the best clamshell flip phone bar none – and I include the also excellent Motorola Razr 40 Ultra in that assessment. The Z Flip 5's new larger cover display is the real appeal of this handset, of course, although I think Samsung is holding back some of the functionality here (the Labs activation route is laborious), which I think could be improved for the better. There's heaps of potential for the future though, plus more apps will inevitably be supported. All considered, I think the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is the best folding phone of 2023 so far.

In the face of much stronger clamshell competition, Samsung needed to up its game for the Galaxy Z Flip 5 to stay ahead. I reckon it has done just that, without dramatically changing what was already a winning formula. That redesigned hinge irons things out on the styling front, and the expansive cover screen is a lot more versatile. The software remains streamlined and performance is up there with the best around right now. With only so-so battery life and cameras that aren’t all that much better than last year though, there’s not quite enough here to appeal to shoppers who would otherwise stick with a traditional phone. Axing the 128GB entry-grade model has also widened the gulf between it and the Galaxy S23, too, even if the difference isn’t quite so dramatic when you compare the 256GB versions. Ultimately however, if you’re already sold on a flip phone, none are quite as complete as this.

Despite being the most refined expression of Samsung’s clamshell foldable to date, the Z Flip 5 also marks the first time it's felt as though Samsung has had to play catch-up in a category it has, for the longest time, defined. But catch up it has, and now that it’s addressed one of the biggest shortcomings of its predecessors – its folded form factor – it marks a leap in functionality for the series, and offers the best performance and software support in its field, while still leaving door open for further improvement in areas like cameras and, yes, even design.

Yet again, I’m impressed with Samsung’s latest flip-tastic smartphone. While last year’s model was the first foldable to really dip its toe into the mainstream, this updated 2023 version has been refined to such a degree that I’m now confident to say that foldables are finally worth considering, especially if it’s something you had initially dismissed. The Z Flip 5’s price might still be a bit out of reach for the majority of prospective buyers – and some small improvements could still be made to enhance things further, particularly in the software – but, if you’re patient enough to wait for the inevitable sale, or you’re flush with cash on release day, this is a must-buy.

Unboxing the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 RETRO, a special limited edition foldable smartphone for old, nostalgic geeks like this lad. I've already reviewed the Samsung Z Flip 5 but here's a quick look at the insides of that RETRO package. As far as specs and features go, this is basically the 512GB version of the original Galaxy foldable phone. Samsung has added a fresh paint job, to make the Z Flip 5 look like that classic E700 handset. However, the rest of the blower from its cameras to its battery are all the same. So go check out my full review of that Sammy flipper for all you need to know. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 RETRO also has a couple of unique exclusive wallpapers, including a fresh animated cover screen backdrop. Meanwhile, inside of the box you get a customisable cover plus stickers and a special collector's badge thing.

When I reviewed the Motorola Razr Plus earlier this year, I called it “the folding phone I’ve been waiting for. I also went on to write another article hailing the Razr Plus as my favorite smartphone of 2023. I’ve mentioned that phone a lot throughout this review, and that’s because it’s the closest — and the only — competitor Samsung faces with the Galaxy Z Flip 5 (at least in the U.S.). For me, the Razr Plus still has a charm that Samsung doesn’t quite grasp with the Flip 5. Whether it’s the magenta leather back, the more streamlined cover screen, or Motorola’s simpler software, the Razr Plus is a phone I personally prefer using a bit more. But when I take a step back and look at the big picture — and think about which folding phone most people should spend their $1,000 on — it’s difficult not to recommend the Galaxy Z Flip 5 over Motorola’s flip phone. There are a lot of reasons for this.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is a great choice if you want a modern folding flip phone. It has a very premium design, clever software features, battery that should last you a day, and is truly compact when folded shut. Its outer screen might charm you, and it is good for checking time, notifications, and key information without unfolding the device. But I found myself annoyed at its limitations while trying to be useful, and it feels redundant to run full apps on it when you can just unfold the phone and use the superior internal screen. The fact Samsung tries to limit which apps you can use on the small display shows you the company doesn’t really want you to. It makes the Z Flip 5 feel like a bit of a ‘where next?’ kind of phone. It’s very similar to the Z Flip 4, and for the price I recommend getting a regular smartphone that will have a better screen, camera, and battery life, such as the Google Pixel 7, iPhone 14, or any of the Galaxy S23 series.

A beautiful, eye-catching smartphone capable of industry-leading performance, that is bogged down by a somewhat limited battery and cameras that could have been a bit better, the mixed bag of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 can be yours for R29 999. That’s right, it costs as much as the highest possible end Galaxy flagship, the S23 Ultra. But with a far inferior camera setup, a smaller battery, no stylus and the same performance capabilities, without all the innovative design and work additions of the Z Fold5, I have to ask where this price comes from. The answer is evidently the fact that it can fold and that it has an extra screen in the Flex Window. For a R30 000 smartphone, you should expect the best of the best and unfortunately, the Z Flip5 is not that. Not by a long shot. I believe it just isn’t worth the price for what little the Flex Window offers in the long run, nor for how genuinely stunning it is.

Beyond a few niche cases, tablets have proven to be mostly recreational consumption devices and turning your most functionally useful personal computer into a averagely useful consumption device may have less backing than people looking to carry smaller phones that are more durable and offer better battery life. In addition to its profound utility, the Flip5 is also offers premium smartphone experience without breaking the bank. While it starts at $999, carriers such as AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile are offering trade-in and upgrade prices as high as $800 off on the phone.

The Galaxy Z Flip5 is an intriguing device that showcases Samsung's continued reign over the foldable landscape. With its nearly gapless Flex Hinge and larger Flex Window, the device moves the needle forward in design and usability. The chipset and software experience are in line with what you'd expect from a high-end Samsung phone. However, the Flip5 isn't without its share of compromises. The most glaring among these is its battery life; despite a cutting-edge chipset designed for efficiency, the device’s battery leaves a lot to be desired for power users. The cameras are a similar story. While the camera system is good, it's not what you would call "best in class," especially for those who rely on telephoto capabilities and a more advanced sensor. So, who is the Galaxy Z Flip5 for? If you're enamored by the foldable form factor and are looking for a phone that can slip into smaller pockets while still offering a large screen, the Flip5 is hard to beat at its price point.

With a starting price of Rs 99,999, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 finds itself in the premium smartphone category. And while other Z Flips did not have much competition to deal with back in their day, the scenario has changed quite a lot this time around. There are a few flip phones in the market now, but the biggest pain in the Galaxy Z Flip 5’s hinge has to be the Moto Razr Ultra 40. Not only does it trump the Galaxy Z Flip 5 in some specs and numbers parameters like external display and battery, but it also has cleaner software and comes with a smaller price tag. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 has a clear advantage in the processor department as it comes with a more advanced processor as compared to the Razr Ultra 40, but otherwise, it has its work cut out for it this time around. Its superb hardware ensures that the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 remains the Flip to flip for, but the competition is catching up.

You can also run full apps on the cover screen in two ways. The first way is to turn on the “Apps allowed on cover screen” option from “Labs” inside the “Advanced Features” tab. But you can only use six apps via this route: Google Maps, Messages, Samsung Messages, Netflix, WhatsApp, and YouTube. When you are using the app on the cover screen, it will continue when you open up the main screen. But it won’t work the other way around. To get most of the apps to run on the cover screen, you’ll need to install the Good Lock app from the Samsung store. With this, you can run any app on the cover screen. I have used TikTok, Instagram, and Gallery apps via this method. It’s safe to say that it works flawlessly. Besides this, you can use the flex mode and multi-window mode just like the Flip 4.

In my experience with the Galaxy Z Flip 5, I found that while the design may look similar to older models, the notably larger external screen adds a fresh layer of customization and functionality. This enhanced screen eliminates the need to constantly flip open the phone, offering not just added convenience but also extending the lifespan of the hinge. Speaking of the hinge, its new design enables the phone to close more securely, contributing to a thinner, lighter device that’s less prone to dust accumulation and screen stickiness. These updates significantly elevate both the device and the user experience. While Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 5 isn’t perfect in every aspect, it’s evident that the company has made thoughtful upgrades focused on improving daily usability, and for that, they deserve commendation.

Despite being around for a little while now, foldable phones are still somewhat of a novelty. Furthermore, the screen technology is still quite expensive – so if you want one, you have to be prepared to pay a high price for it. The Z Flip 5 is a stylish and smart choice, with the small size when folding down making it fit neatly and nicely into pockets and small bags. You can see why it’s appealing – all of the different fun colours also make it quite attractive too. Unlike some other folding phones, this isn’t a massive device that is essentially two normal size phones stacked on top of each other. When you open it up, it’s basically a normal sized phone, albeit with an obvious crease in the middle of the screen. Whether you’re bothered by that or not is up to the individual, but the overall effect is pretty good.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 wasn’t among the best Premium devices in our DXOMARK Audio tests, offering a slightly lower audio Recording quality than its predecessor Z Flip4, and the same playback quality through the built-in speakers. Overall, recordings were nice and pleasant to listen to, but the device isn’t really suitable for recording at loud events or in windy conditions. Recording performance was best with the main and front cameras and dropped slightly when using office and memo apps. Playback loudness was good but at the maximum volume setting our experts noticed some unwanted audio artifacts. Playback quality was highest when gaming and slightly lower for listening to music and watching movies. Overall, the differences between use cases were fairly small.

There’s no denying that Samsung is the leader in the foldable smartphone segment and that the new Flip 5 and Fold 5 will be the best-selling devices in their respective categories this year as well. That being said, competition from the Motorola Razr+ and a half dozen book-style foldable devices from Chinese manufacturers will definitely close the gap over the next 12 months. Samsung’s slot iteration has allowed the competition to catch and even surpass them when it comes to foldable smartphone design, battery life and performance. Choosing between the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Fold 5 is fairly simple. If you want the best-performing device, the Fold is the obvious answer, but personally, I’ll be leaving the Fold 5 in the drawer in favor of the Flip 5. It’s smaller, more convenient and feels like I’m using a futuristic device as opposed to the Fold 5 which feels like I’ve just pulled a mini- laptop out of my pocket. That’s not what I’m looking for in a smartphone.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is really an attractive phone; the new hinge that eliminates the gap between the two parts of the display in the closed mode, the larger external display, the amazing resistance of the main display against folding, the superb brightness and smooth and fluid execution of animations on the external display. However, the problems are still there; the lack of dust resistance, the deep and annoying indentation in the middle of the display, the absence of DeX feature, the weak cameras, the excessive stretching of the display, the 60 Hz refresh rate of the external display and finally, the unjustifiable price of the phone. Even with many weaknesses, I still believe that the form factor of foldable phones like the Z Flip should become a standard in the mobile industry; because the combination of “phone and smartwatch” is better, more attractive, and more practical than the combination of “phone and tablet” that we see in the Galaxy Z Fold.

If you are in the market for a flagship foldable smartphone, then the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 smartphone should be the phone to go for. It has got great hardware and cameras, which are better than last year and they have better software support that will enhance your foldable/flip phone experience. It is the best flip phone that Samsung has ever made and it is perfect, and is true when there was no competition. But that has now changed with foldable phones like Motorola Razr 40 Ultra, which is the Galaxy’s fierce competitor and a great alternative foldable/flip smartphone in the market. Both are similarly matched in terms of performance, experience, and cameras, but differ in price point and may also differ in terms of user experience. However, with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5, you get a bit of extra benefits such as reverse wireless charging and multiple color options but is behind in terms of Moto’s robust refresh rate support.

As the fifth generation of Samsung’s vertically foldable flagship phone, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 showcases Samsung’s most advanced technology and innovation in the field of foldable screen technology. This mobile phone uses the most advanced hinge technology, folds seamlessly, hovers at multiple angles, and has strong damping without a rebound. It shows us the ultimate exploration results of Samsung’s folding-screen mobile phones. In terms of the folding experience, due to the upgrade of the hinge, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 fits perfectly in the folded state. The creation of the comfortable hovering of the hinge has always been Samsung’s strength. The stop strength is moder and it does not rebound when folded at a large angle, and it does not procrastinate a all. Even the folding angle has reached close to 170 degrees.

In lieu of a higher quality camera, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is more of a convenient shooter with a creative twist. Image quality is simply not up to the standard of today’s $1,000 phone, and were it not for the foldable design, the Flip 5 would be a flipping disappointment by that metric. As is, Samsung seems stuck in a quandary. The cover screen is bigger and better, yet the cameras and battery are stagnant, making for an interesting situation going into what this phone’s successor will look like. Either way, Samsung needs to do something, and perhaps competitors will force its hand. The Flip is no longer a conceptual design; it’s hit a maturity now that is proven viable, already reinforced by what other brands are doing as well. Foldables like this will still be a novelty for most users, but I expect that will wear off quickly once more of them are out in the wild.

The Z Flip 5 has always been enticing to me. The folding form factor is unique and a fantastic example of futuristic tech. However... My smartphone is a tool - and if a tool cant survive - then it doesn't deserve to be my daily driver. Today we start a multi year durability test of the Samsung Z Flip 5. Might also just be a multi month durability test... We will use it until it breaks.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 features welcome upgrades that elevate it to be the premier mainstream foldable phone for 2023. With a redesigned gapless hinge, a large cover display as well as a beefy Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy chipset, this is the de facto mainstream foldable phone to buy. More demanding power users should gravitate towards the Galaxy Z Fold5 with its larger displays and enhanced functionality.

Before we give you a verdict on the Galaxy Z Flip 5, we need to make one thing absolutely. Foldable smartphones are not meant for everyone, especially if you’re the sort of person who uses their devices very roughly or keeps their devices for a long time. As for the Galaxy Z Flip 5, it is a pretty solid phone, even when you consider regular phones. Samsung’s decision to enlarge the cover screen is a clear invitation to make better use of the Galaxy Flip 5 even when it’s folded. This is particularly useful for folks aiming to cut down on their screen time. You can conveniently check notifications, respond to messages, take quick peeks at social media, and then get back to the real world. However, Samsung needs to work on app support for the smaller display. It is expensive for its specifications, especially when you consider its price and specifications. The camera, although it puts out great photos and videos, is an old one. The battery could have been a lot better.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 blazes ahead of the competition mainly due to the commendable software optimisation and the overall experience. Yes, the battery does need an upgrade but what we got this year with the Flip 5 should be enough for you to switch over to foldable phones if you haven’t yet and plan on doing so.

Do I recommend buying the new Galaxy Flip5? Unequivocally yes. It’s a smartphone that lets you stand out from the crowd, while offering everything a high-end smartphone has to offer. Who is the Flip5 for? First of all, for fans of foldable smartphones, for those who want to keep up with the progress, who follow innovations and technology development. For those who want their smartphone to fit in their pocket without any problems, unlike tablet smartphones. Trust me, you won’t want to part with the amazing Samsung Galaxy Flip5. The Galaxy Flip5 is a true flagship device. Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 gen 2 for Galaxy combined with 8 GB of RAM do their job perfectly, the smartphone works just fine. Programmes and the system run fast, there are no overheating problems. Also, Samsung guarantees 4 system updates and 5 years of security updates, so it's safe to say that this is a smartphone for years.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 may not be a smartphone revolution, but it's certainly an evolution worth applauding. With its sleeker design, smoother Flex Hinge, and an innovative Flex Window for real-time information at your fingertips, it's a quirky and practical folding phone. Performance-wise, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip impresses, handling everything from daily tasks to gaming with ease. The camera setup, while not groundbreaking, delivers quality photos and selfies. The improved battery life is a welcome surprise. Samsung's One UI 5.1 enhances the overall experience, making the Z Flip5 a stylish, foldable smartphone that's ready to unfold your digital universe in style.

There really is no other word for it, this phone is just…fun. Yes, I know RM4,500 is a lot of money for something “fun”. And honestly, is the Z Flip 5 RM500 better than the Find N2 Flip? No, it’s not. The Oppo is a great flip phone on its own, and it still has a few things going for it, like a larger (and far more useable) battery and a shallower crease. But the Z Flip 5 does have a bigger cover screen, better cameras, a faster chip, wireless charging and water resistance, so yeah, it kinda is worth it. More than anything, Samsung has made a phone that has made me excited about Android all over again. And I never thought I’d say that.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is an awesome phone. That larger cover screen alone is a major attraction, and improvements like longer battery life, better pictures from the cameras despite the camera hardware remaining the same, and faster performance thanks to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip all add up to make this phone a more complete package compared to previous models. The Z Flip 5 isn't perfect, but it's the best device in the lineup yet. It's an excellent choice for anyone wanting to switch from a slab phone to a foldable, and it's also a good upgrade for owners of the original Galaxy Z Flip and the Galaxy Z Flip 3. Only Galaxy Z Flip 4 owners should steer clear unless they manage to get a solid exchange deal.

Aside from the nostalgic appeal of condensing the physical footprint of your smartphone, Samsung’s work on the outer screen is by far the biggest reason to get into this style of phone. I’m victim to getting lost in my phone when attempting to do quicker and more focused interactions like responding to text, checking notifications, or keeping up on news. While the widgets panel is limited in its app support, the ones that are available are currently more than enough for me to keep my phone closed at most times. Using the phone for a couple of days with a focus on the outer screen has brought me to the realization that if phones replaced their notification shade with a handful of full-sized widgets with varying degrees of functionality, people may not be on their phones as much, at least not me. But it’s also early days, we’ll see how widgets help with my phone detox weeks in.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 global battery score was below average, but it performed quite well in our battery protocol tests when compared with other “flip” devices we had tested. It outperformed the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 in all test cases and achieved a much better efficiency score. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5’s autonomy performances were decent, with the 3700mAh battery lasting nearly 2 days. When testing individual usages, the device underperformed in our outdoor tests, particularly when using the GPS navigation, which showed very low autonomy. However, the device’s autonomy held up decently when watching videos. The charging experience was slightly below average. The low-powered 25W charger took 1 hour and 35 minutes to fully charge the battery, while a quick 5-minute charge boost provided only 3 hours of autonomy on average. Residual consumption was low whether the fully charged device was still plugged in or not.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 looks so cool that we wanted it to run away with a top score but it just couldn't impress us with its photo-taking capabilities as much as we wanted it to and as we are a photography site, the cameras and image quality top trump design every time. We're not saying it performs poorly as it doesn't but the quality in some shots isn't quite there and that's annoying. When the dynamic range isn't too varied, images are great but they're a bit too hit-and-miss to award it full marks. Have we mentioned it looks so very cool though?

The one thing I seriously wished the Z Flip5 could have is a larger battery, though the phone’s 3700mAh battery has no issues for lightweight use as it easily offers a day of battery life with 4 hours of screen on time, pushing it further with multiple sessions of photography can easily prompt the low battery notification in the middle of the day, and let’s not forget the fact that it charges at 25W, which isn’t fast and trickles down once it passes 60% of charge.

In the foldable smartphone segment, Samsung Galaxy Flip5 is one of the best models available today. Design updates and a new external display have really influenced the experience of using this smartphone, and the list of all the features of the device is almost the same as any modern flagship. At the same time, for buyers of image devices, the Flip5 is likely to be at the top of the list (although not a very long one). Yes, enthusiasts will find certain weaknesses that make Flip5 not the best solution in its price segment (cameras have room for improvement and battery life does not exactly compete with monoblocks), but it is in its category of "flips" Samsung has features that set it apart from the competition. Moreover, the external display is now a reason to upgrade even last year's model.

Smartphone reviewers go through a lot of hardware, but after my time with the Flip 4 last year, I have to admit that this was one of the few phones I actually found myself missing. Sure, I missed the cool camera tricks I could do with the (even tinier then) external screen, but more than anything I missed how much fun it was to just use day-to-day, flipping open and closed like I'm back using a phone at the turn of the century. Nostalgia's no reason to drop a grand on a new phone, but this is no one-trick-pony — Samsung's foldable tech has been maturing at a pace you can feel, and this is very close to just being a standard top-shelf flagship phone that just happens to also fold.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 has brought this flip form factor to a whole new level, mainly thanks to the new Flex Window. If there was ever anything that would stop any consumer from jumping over to this is the battery life. It’s not bad and it has improved, but if they’re coming from a smartphone that launched rather recently, it would likely end up being a sacrifice they’d have to make. On an overall level, this already has all the necessary ingredients to be a reliable daily driver, and then some.

I've been using the Samsung Z Flip 5 as my full-time phone, testing the camera tech, gaming chops and battery life. And while it's improved in some ways, this bendy Galaxy still needs some tweaking in others. First, the camera hardware appears to be recycled from last year's foldable phone. And while it's generally dependable, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 does struggle in ambient light and when you need to zoom in. Battery life is also less than ideal, maxing out at 5-6 hours of screen on time if you're not using the camera too much etc. Every day of reviewing the Samsung Z Flip 5, this foldable Galaxy ended in power saving mode or dead by the evening. It's definitely best suited to lighter users.

We are starting to say this every year, but if you don’t already own a Galaxy Z Flip and want a foldable flip phone, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is the one to get. If you own one, the upgrades here aren’t really a big enough deal to make that swap, unless unlike me, you somehow find that the cover display software is usable. But really, what we have is a flip phone with an upgraded processor, new hinge system, and a bigger cover display that has good software and support, a nice inner display, decent camera, and pretty poor battery life. It’s a mixed bag that essentially meets the flip phone story that’s told every year. This is a solid phone that folds in half and costs $1,000. Try to save some money on it with a trade-in to make its weaker areas hurt less.

So that was my detailed review of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5. This, by all means, is the most refined flip smartphone in the market right now. Samsung’s new approach towards this form factor has worked extremely well for the brand. Yes, we saw a similar implementation with the Moto Razr 40 Ultra. In fact, the outer display and software on the Moto Razr 40 Ultra is much better, but with a bit of effort, you can also bring a similar experience to this 3.4-inch cover display. The important thing to note here is that this kind of an outer display implementation will possibly extend the smartphone’s life, since people won’t be opening their smartphone for every other task. What Samsung has done better is refinement. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 feels like a much more complete phone. It feels sturdy, it feels premium, and it makes me feel confident about holding the smartphone.

All-in-all, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is once again the one to beat in the flip smartphone segment. The new Flex Window is the highlight of the smartphone which allows you to more than just take a peek at notifications. With a carousel of apps at your disposal, it is comfortably the best cover display on a flip phone. This is matched by an equally good UI experience where Samsung's Good Lock app allows you to run just about any app on the cover display. With Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 under the hood, the Z Flip 5 is one of the fastest smartphones in the market and passes through most performance tests with flying colors. The phone gets the same camera system as the Z Flip 4 and it clicks great social media-ready shots in most cases, except in low-light situations. While the Flex Window is a welcome addition, the inner display is nearly identical to its predecessor with the same prominent crease in the middle.

In the DXOMARK Camera tests, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 showed some noticeable improvements over its predecessor Z Flip4, making it one of the better options with a folding form factor. When shooting still images, our testers particularly liked the accurate white balance in daylight and under indoor conditions, as well as the good exposure in most conditions. In combination with the fast and stable autofocus, this makes the Z Flip5 a good option for capturing daily life around you. In addition, the Samsung offered good detail when shooting with the primary camera and the ultra-wide, as well as in video mode. When recording video, stabilization also worked effectively and image noise was kept well under control. On the downside, the lack of a dedicated tele lens means that tele zoom showed noticeably lower levels of detail than on most other premium devices.

The Samsung Z Flip5’s remarkable Overall display score puts it in third place among all smartphones in our database to date, and is the highest-scoring Samsung device tested so far. Unsurprisingly, it is also the highest-scoring flip phone for display currently in our database. For several attributes, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 performs similarly to its predecessor, the Z Flip4, but has better readability, particularly outdoors. The smartphone has suitable brightness and is readable in every lighting condition, including in full sunlight, where its peak brightness comes close that of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and actually provides better legibility than the S23 Ultra when viewed on angle. The Z Flip5 is also very good for watching HDR10 videos in low-light and indoor conditions. Videos play smoothly with few frame mismatches; the default color setting (“vivid”) provides a wide gamut and pleasantly saturated colors.

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 manages better image and video capability than the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra. But neither should be purchased for this reason alone as both are quite average compared to the competition. If you seek good camera and video quality, the Samsung Galaxy S23 is a much better choice, minus the folding tricks. Between the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5, I would pick the Razr because of its well-optimised cover display experience, which is currently second to none. Motorola's MyUX software experience also remains unmatched in terms of minimal bloatware and additional apps, and is also closer to a Google Pixel-like software user experience. Then, there's the fact that the Razr 40 Ultra also looks so much better with its slick design and that radical-looking cover display.

As you may have noticed on social media, the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2023 livestream took place in Seoul two weeks ago, and it’s all everyone’s been talking about—mainly due to the pretty significant and revolutionary upgrade to its trendy Galaxy Z Flip series. For those really late to the party and have no clue what the Galaxy Z Flip is, think of the early 2000s clamshell-style foldable phones—like the cult Motorola Razr—but with new-age technology such as inner and outer touchscreens, vibrant displays, superior performance, and much, much more. Now, on its Z Flip5 model, Samsung has announced several new upgrades to the Gen Z and millennial-loved device, which I now have the opportunity to review. Below, find the 10 features I’m loving so far.

For every succeeding release, there’s always the few that can finally help a line-up stand out. In Samsung’s case, this time around it is with the Galaxy Z Flip5. Thanks to the new Cover Screen and the features available through it, the phone has shaped up to become one of my favourite devices of 2023, and it is so far the only foldable that can provide me with an ultra-compact smartphone experience. At a starting price of RM4,499, it is by no means an affordable product, but that’s to be expected from most devices of this class. But if you have the budget to spare and you’re looking to jump onto the foldables bandwagon, then the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 is one that’s worth your consideration.

Over three years ago, Motorola kickstarted the clamshell revival with the resurrected MOTORAZR 2019 … and just a few months later, Samsung came for Motorola’s milkshake with a direct competitor: the first Galaxy Z Flip. Well a little under three months ago, I started to think history might be about to repeat itself. Because while I like Motorola’s Razr+ 2023 that dropped in June, the reality is that it’s a phone built around one killer feature: a huge cover screen that lets this flip phone double as a tiny phone. With not much else to set the Razr+ apart, I speculated that all Samsung would need to do to crush it would be to release an updated Galaxy Flip that did the same thing. And lo and behold, Samsung has done just that. Today on MrMobile, we’re putting the world’s two best flip phones head to head! Join Michael Fisher for Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 vs Motorola RAZR+!

There aren't many flip phones around, but there's no question that Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip5 is currently the best flip phone you can buy now. To start, there's the price. It's by no means cheap but it carries the same starting price of S$1,498 for 256GB like before. You’ll have to shop quite hard for a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Android phone below S$1,500. Yes, they exist, but the Galaxy Z Flip5 has the advantage of a vibrant Samsung ecosystem, regular and guaranteed firmware and security updates, and Samsung Knox on-device protection. These are unseen perks that stick with you for the long term. Other Android phone rivals are nowhere as complete or comprehensive. Furthermore, having Samsung One UI being less awful than its Chinese counterparts is enough of an incentive, and these reasons are how Samsung edges out its creaseless competitor (besides the noticeable difference in raw power).

For me, the Razr Plus still has charm that Samsung doesn’t quite grasp with the Flip 5. Whether it’s the magenta leather back, the more streamlined cover screen, or Motorola’s simpler software, the Razr Plus is a phone I personally prefer using a bit more. There are a lot of reasons for this. Samsung’s hinge feels much better constructed, and for a folding phone, that’s a big deal. The Z Flip 5 also has a better camera experience, a newer processor, longer software support, and a nicer overall build.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is on one hand, an iterative update - no real change to the main display, the cameras, or battery, a slight bump in the power on offer, while the design overall remains pretty much the same. But the exterior display changes the entire experience. It's a lot more useful than the small screen on the Flip 4 and that has instant appeal. The fact that the Z Flip 5 also folds flat with no gap makes for a much more seamless and considered design, showing just how far this pocketable delight has come since it first launched. There are some things to note - the crease in the display remains despite the hinge redesign, the camera is good but not the best in the flagship market and the longevity of these folding devices is still a concern, despite their improvements over the years.

To flip or to fold, that is the question I started this review with. The answer? If you’re someone looking for a compact and stylish foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is for you. If you’re looking for a foldable that actually turns a regular phone into a tablet for better productivity, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is the one to buy. If you still want a flip phone but don’t want to spend a lakh of rupees, you have the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra (review) as an option that also comes with a large and usable cover screen and a smooth performance, although its cameras don’t hold up well. By increasing the cover screen’s size, Samsung is encouraging you to use the Galaxy Flip 5 much more in its folded form. It’s a great option for those trying to limit their screen time, as they can use the cover screen to quickly glance at notifications, reply to messages, take a brief look at social media, and then return to reality.

After using the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 for about a week, I can say that it is one of the most practical foldable phones that the company has ever launched. So, if you are willing to spend about 1 lakh on a smartphone that looks different and stylish, folds, has two screens, and offers all of that without compromising a lot on the performance front, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is a good deal. Overall, its new design, better and bigger outer screen, and good performance are impressive. However, I believe that the camera and battery performance could have been a bit better, but right now, what Samsung offers in these departments is also not too bad. But there’s scope for improvement. All-in-all, if you're keen on owning an innovative piece of tech that turns heads and offers great performance, the Z Flip 5 is definitely worth considering.

We are conflicted about the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5. On the one hand, it’s clear that these are still the best folding phones available in the US. But on the other hand, these are fairly iterative products. Putting aside the new and improved fold-flat hinges, upgraded Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, and larger 3.4-inch cover screen on the Z Flip5, the rest of the specs are mostly unchanged. Depending on your point of view, this could be a good thing, though. Samsung's got a winning formula, and it's been refining it with each generation. Ultimately, these are extremely competent foldable handsets that deliver a superior user experience and benefit from Samsung’s expertise. So, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? While that’s true, we can’t help but think that the Z Flip5 and Z Fold5 would benefit from better cameras and higher-capacity batteries.

Samsung’s Z Flip 5 starts at $1,299 in Canada and you can purchase it from most, if not all, carriers in the country. If you’re interested in a no-nonsense foldable handset, it's a great choice. I can’t confidently tell you to buy it over the Razr+, however. The Razr+’s front display is better than the Z Flip 5 in terms of both specs and usability. Of course, some users will download what they need from Good Lock, which makes the two front displays more comparable regarding what they're capable of. On the other hand, if you’re interested in photography or taking videos, the Z Flip 5 is more reliable than Motorola’s offering thanks to its pictures featuring more detail and colours that pop. However, battery-wise, the Motorola Razr+ is the clear winner, though it’s best to charge either device at night.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is a bit of a challenge to evaluate as a reviewer. It does everything Samsung wants it to do without any major issues, but I don’t particularly like a lot of those things Samsung wants it to do. Flex Mode is still basically useless to me (though, again, good for photography) and the hinge is still a textural distraction. The Flex Window is a great addition, but you can ultimately do all of the same things in an admittedly less novel way on a regular smartphone. I don’t need a second screen to look at the weather or count my steps. I don’t feel that the Z Flip line has proven its necessity like the Z Fold line has, but that’s why Samsung makes two foldables, I suppose. I don’t know if anyone needs the Z Flip 5, but it’s here and pretty good if you want it.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 may not be a big upgrade in terms of power, but the phone gets the upgrade that matters with the large 3.4-inch cover screen. While Samsung's implementation isn't perfect, it gives users less reason to open their phones and is a joy to use when fully set up. With the Z Flip 5, Samsung continues to prove that it has a winning formula, even if the competition is catching up.

Here we are, staring at the fifth generation of Samsung’s Galaxy Z series of foldables and still asking the same question: Are phones with flexible displays ready for the mainstream? With its larger and more useful external screen, the Flip 5 is the best candidate in the category’s history to appeal outside the tech-savvy crowd. It offers excellent performance, capable cameras and — lest we forget — it folds in half! Plus, it combines relatively advanced bendable-screen tech with an exterior panel in a size that’s sure to win nostalgia points, meaning it’ll appeal to experimentalists and sentimentalists alike. If your existing Flip is falling apart, the Flip 5 is worth the upgrade for the Flex Window alone. But if you’re contemplating adopting a foldable for the first time, just know that you’ll probably sacrifice some camera quality, have to take extra care when manhandling the device and resign yourself to always be charging.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 further proves that phone-makers are getting closer to answering the question of why foldable phones are useful in the first place. The new cover screen goes a long way in reaching that goal. As I wrote when reviewing the Motorola Razr Plus, the bigger external display shows that flip phones are about more than just portability. Having a device that's easy to navigate with one hand and can also unfold to a full-sized phone makes the Z Flip 5 and other similar phones more versatile than the phones most people carry today. Companies like Samsung and Motorola are starting to realize that the so-called "killer app" for foldables may come down to the benefits of having two screens that work together, rather than focusing primarily on how the main screen behaves when folded and unfolded.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is a really great foldable smartphone, and really the only reason why it did not get a full 5-star rating on this review, is because of the cameras. If you can get away with not having the best or even really good cameras on your phone, then the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is a really great phone to pick up. Particularly if you have smaller pockets. There’s been quite a few times where I didn’t even realize it was in my pocket, even though it is a 6.7-inch smartphone. But folded in half, I sometimes don’t notice it’s there.

In the face of much stronger clamshell competition, Samsung needed to up its game for the Galaxy Z Flip 5 to stay ahead. We reckon it has done just that, without dramatically changing what was already a winning formula.

If you’re considering jumping from a traditional slab-style phone to a flip phone, the Z Flip 5 is a great entry point. The cover screen isn’t just a neat party trick — it’s a genuinely useful tool that made my life a little easier in numerous ways while using the phone. It’s a device best suited for someone with a sense of adventure and curiosity when it comes to technology — someone willing to try a new way of doing things and able to roll with it when you inevitably hit a snag. For that kind of person, the Z Flip 5 is a truly rewarding experience.

I don’t think anyone aiming to buy this device needs my opinion. I do think the Galaxy Z Flip5 will sell like hotcakes. Seriously, Samsung addressed two of the biggest demands – the hinge and also the cover display. There are two more additional upgrades – firstly, the removal of the 128GB storage version. 128GB is unusable and I’m glad that Samsung just axed it entirely. However, that also upgrades the price. For us here in Malaysia, it starts RM100 higher than the previous generation and I think that’s okay.

There is a lot to love about the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5, and if I were personally to buy a folding phone, this is the one I'd choose. It's not so hideously expensive as the Samsung Galaxy Fold 5 but offers a similar sort of advantage. The Flip 5 hasn't fixed the fundamental problems of durability which plague foldables. That screen will wear out eventually — it's susceptible to dust, and it's just not as durable as a traditional slab phone. However, for the person who frequently replaces their phone with the latest model, that may not be such a big deal. The person for whom this phone is ideal, however, is someone who is fashion-conscious and who really needs a device that will fit in even the smallest of pockets. There's no denying that there's an extremely high cool factor to the Flip 5, and just using the phone is an exciting experience that doesn't really get old.

The Galaxy Flips have been steadily evolving, and with the Z Flip5, Samsung is approaching that point where it would need to do something big soon. For this year, however, we think a cover display and hinge will do. We'd be happy recommending the Galaxy Z Flip5 - just be sure to either grab one of the early promos or wait a couple of months for the inevitable price drops.

As the title says: the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is flippin' great. In terms of design, build and visual appeal it's the best clamshell flip phone of 2023 bar none – including the also excellent Motorola Razr 40 Ultra in that assessment. However, despite the Galaxy's new, larger cover display being n obvious upgrade, Samsung has been a bit shy in getting the very most from it when it comes to app functionality.

It's the build quality that wins over Motorola, the screen responsiveness and software that betters Oppo, and at times I've been using this clamshell and thinking, "you know what, maybe I'll ditch my current flagship" in favour of it. It's that good.

There are a lot of reasons for this. Samsung’s hinge feels much better constructed, and for a folding phone, that’s a big deal. The Z Flip 5 also has a better camera experience, a newer processor, longer software support, and a nicer overall build. Yes, the cover screen is a pain to configure, but once you have it set up the way you want, it does just about everything you could ask for. I’ll put it this way: If you’re in the market for a $1,000 folding phone right now, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is the one you should buy. I have my personal preferences for Motorola’s flip phone, but it’s impossible to deny that Samsung has the objectively better product of the two. There’s a reason Samsung is seen as the king of folding phones, and the Galaxy Z Flip 5 ensures that won’t change any time soon.

For the first time, it feels like Samsung is playing catch-up in the foldable phone space. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 catches up to its new rival, the Motorola Razr Plus with that larger cover screen. However, Samsung has not done enough to make this Flex Screen as useful, and we actually prefer the slightly larger screen size on the Razr Plus, which makes many tasks and typing easier to handle on the outer display. The Razr also has faster charging speeds if that matters to you, and that's another area where Samsung could do more. The Flip 5, however, has the better waterproofing, and it also feels much better put together and sturdier, which is very important for a foldable phone, a class of devices known to be more fragile than others. Additionally, this new Flip now comes with the fastest chip around and, finally, with 256GB of on-board storage. The Galaxy also has a much better camera, if that's a priority.

It’s not as easy to nail down a verdict on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 as it might seem. On the one hand, Samsung finally gave us what we’ve been asking for in the form of a large, feature-rich Flex Window. The revamped hinge means there’s no more gap when the phone is closed, and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy brings a nice little bump to short-term performance. There’s no question that the Galaxy Z Flip 5’s materials are on point, and Samsung’s update policy of five years of security support and four years of OS upgrades sets the gold standard among Android OEMs. A free storage bump on the base model from 128GB to 256GB is just the icing on the cake when you don’t have a microSD slot.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is an excellent phone for people looking to carry a 6.7-inch handset that takes up as little space as possible, as well as anyone simply looking for something fun and different. The Flip 5's hardware is refined and beautiful, and the two screens are outstanding in quality, though Motorola offers far more functionality on the outer screen with the Razr+. On the other hand, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 has a more rugged build and a faster processor, potentially making it a better choice for anyone who likes to hold onto their phone for at least a couple of years. Ultimately, either of these foldables are easy to recommend alongside more traditional favorites of ours like the $999.99 Galaxy S23+ or the $899 Google Pixel 7 Pro. And while we're still in the process of testing it, the larger and more expensive Z Fold 5 looks to be your best bet if you want a phone that balances the power of a high-end flagship with the productivity prowess of a tablet.

By adding a larger external display, buffing the processing power, and creating a more durable design, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 fixes most of its last-gen woes and remains the best flip-style phone you can buy today. It's also worth noting that Samsung has doubled the base storage of the Z Flip this year, upping it from 128GB to 256GB. As someone who always takes an extra photo or two "just in case," that's my favorite upgrade with the new model. I'd also factor in Samsung's rich infrastructure of after-sales support, including a software update policy that spans up to five years and a customer support system that includes more than 900 stores nationwide plus at-home consultations. And if you're an existing Samsung Galaxy phone user, consider the aggressive trade-in offers available on Samsung.com and carriers. There's a good chance you'll be able to snag a Z Flip 5 for at least a third of the price.

Funny how things change so suddenly. When the Galaxy Z Flip 4 launched last fall, there was no other comparable clamshell foldable to match it, but now it feels dated. With the arrival of the Galaxy Z Flip 5, however, it feels more like Samsung’s taking a cautious approach by giving us an iterative device. I will say that it’s the more compelling Samsung foldable this time, since there are fewer notable changes with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5. You get a larger cover display, a gap-free design and faster processor, even though you can't run every app on the external screen. It still tops every other clamshell foldable in the camera department, which is made more enjoyable by that Flex Window. While it doesn’t seem like a meaty upgrade, Samsung does technically improve the phone in every way — so there's nothing wrong about that in my book.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is official and here's my hands-on review, plus comparison vs the Z Flip 4 to see if it's worth an upgrade. The Samsung Z Flip 5 may serve up very similar camera tech, but this foldable phone's specs are boosted with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and the design is much improved. That UK price starts from £1049, so this new bendy blower is more expensive than the Flip 4 from last year. However, while the camera sensors seem to be the same, Samsung has upgraded many other bits for the Galaxy Z Flip 5. That gap is now minimal, while the cover screen is a lot more usable. Gamers too will enjoy that cutting-edge performance, which should absolutely smash through Genshin Impact.

I’d been hoping that Samsung would adopt a bigger outer display on its next-gen Flip foldable, and today, my wish has been granted. The Galaxy Z Flip 5, which the company launched today, sports a 3.4-inch window on the outside that’s 3.78 times larger than before. It also has a new “Flex Hinge” that allows the device to fold shut without leaving a gap between the two halves of the internal screen. Throw in the typical processor upgrades, double the base storage and some software enhancements, and the Z Flip 5 appears to be a small, but meaningful step up for the same $999 starting price as last year.

For nearly a year, I’ve dual-wielded Samsung’s Galaxy Fold 4 and Flip 4 as a daily-driver one-two punch for workday productivity and weekend portable playtime. Same as the Fold 3 and Flip 3 before that; and the second and first generations before. But this year, for the first time in American foldable history, Samsung faces competition in both categories. On the clamshell front, Motorola’s Razr+ is a real affront thanks to its larger … front. At the same time, the Galaxy Fold’s large-format dominance is threatened by the Google Pixel Fold and the upcoming OnePlus foldable. Well Samsung invited me to an early hands-on at its pop-up experience center in Herald Square to see the heat it’s bringing to compete: the meaningfully different Galaxy Flip 5 … and the exceedingly familiar Galaxy Fold 5.

You only need to look at the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and its large cover screen to see that one phone seems like the more significant upgrade, though. It’s early days with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5, but I’m impressed with what I’ve seen so far. Where last year’s model was the first foldable to dip its toes into the mainstream, this updated 2023 version has been refined to such a degree that I’m now confident to say that foldables are finally worth considering – especially if it’s a category of smartphone you initially dismissed. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 arrives in shops on 11 August and is available to preorder right now. The 256GB model costs £1,049 and £1,149 for 512GB of storage. If you do preorder, you’ll receive 50% off the Samsung starter pack, which comes with a 25W charger and case. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is on one hand an iterative update - no real change to the main display, the cameras, or battery, a slight bump in the power on offer, while the design overall remains pretty much the same. While it was Motorola that popularized the clamshell form factor when it appeared back in the mid-1990s, in the smartphone era it's been Samsung that has steered the ship with regard to what a clamshell foldable smartphone looks like and is capable of. In the three short years in which the Galaxy Z Flip line has cemented its place among the best foldables, we've seen the rapid evolution of both the form factor itself and Samsung's specific approach, with this year's Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 offering some overdue refinements to combat fresh-faced competition in a race where Samsung once ran unopposed. Looking at the evolution of its foldable lines up to this point you certainly couldn't call the company complacent, but the main upgrades that the Z Flip 5 brings to the table give us the impression that, for the first time, Samsung is playing catch-up to newcomers to the foldable space such as Oppo and the aforementioned Motorola. But caught up it has.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is a significant improvement on the Z Flip 4, but unlike in previous years, Samsung now has to compete with foldable options from other manufacturers – and that’s where things aren’t quite as rosy. For example, the new 3.4-inch external panel, while much more useful than that of the Z Flip 4, is somewhat restricted. While you can run specific apps like Messages and YouTube, the Razr 40 Ultra allows you to access any app you like for more in-depth tasks, making Samsung’s option look less impressive. It also has the same dual 12MP camera setup as its predecessor which, while performing just fine in well-lit conditions, could be better when light levels begin to drop. Again, this wouldn’t have been such an issue had the Razr 40 Ultra and Oppo Find N2 Flip not included much higher-res cameras with better performance across the board.

Last year’s Galaxy Z Flip 4 set the standard for clamshell-style folding phones, but was also the first to face any serious threats from rival brands. Samsung has stepped up its game as a result, without dramatically changing what was already a winning formula. The redesigned, fold-shut hinge irons things out on the styling front, while the bigger cover screen is a lot more versatile. Some streamlining on the software front will hopefully add wider app support for the cover display, and there are still some unknowns like battery life and camera image quality. With many more flip phones now vying for your cash, they’ll both need to impress – especially given the higher asking price. Axing the 128GB model makes it feel like the jump is considerable, but the difference isn’t quite so dramatic when you compare the 256GB versions. It’s still early days, but with the Galaxy Z Fold 5 feeling a little too similar to its predecessor, we think this is the more exciting of this year’s Samsung foldables.

As observed from previous leaks, it is indeed a widget-based interface. There's a widget for most native apps, but I could not spot any from Google during my brief hands-on time. One can place calls from the call log widget, check the weather, and even reply to notifications with a full keyboard, which is a big leap from the previous implementation, which used voice input for sending out replies. The cover display cannot run full apps like on the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra (Review) which seems like a big missed opportunity for Samsung, but we will reserve our final opinion for the full review. The Flex Window also has quick toggles (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc) and comes with Samsung Pay support. Samsung has also added the ability to show one's boarding pass at the airport from the outer display itself, thus reducing the need to open the phone.

Samsung's next-gen foldables are now here - the Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5 arrive with improved hinges, display tweaks, and the mandatory internal upgrades. Also new are a trio of Galaxy Tab S9 tablets and two Galaxy Watch6 models (or four, depending on how you count). An eventful Unpacked once again, then. Perhaps the biggest change in the new foldables is they now fold with no gap between the two halves - no more wedge. Samsung had been putting off a gapless design for several generations, making the bendy Galaxies appear dated and prototype-like next to a crowd of better-looking offerings from pretty much any other company that's taken a crack at foldables. This changes with generation 5.

While I am a proponent of the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mantra, Samsung will have to figure out how to make the next Z Flip into something truly special because the Z Flip 5 ain’t it. That’s not to say it’s not a good phone –– without any benchmarking to back it up right now –– it is. It’s still super pocketable and versatile. You can do a hell of a lot more with the larger Flex Window and the new Flex hinge is less intrusive on the overall design. And I’m never going to say no to a more powerful processor (even if it is on the more power-hungry side), but as it stands, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is nothing more than an incremental step, just like the Z Flip 4 was. Now to where exactly Samsung is stepping to, I’m unsure, but I can say it’s getting there awfully slow.

Samsung has answered the call of its flip phone competitors, announcing the Galaxy Z Flip5 at its Galaxy Unpacked event in South Korea. After Oppo went larger with its Find N2 Flip cover display, only to be outdone by the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra’s 3.6-inch external screen, all eyes were on Samsung’s response. Instead of going for sheer size, the Flip5 is a substantial upgrade over last year’s Flip4 model, going from a 1.9-inch cover screen to 3.4 inches. Screen expansion aside, the Flip5 also introduces internal upgrades, photography improvements, and tweaks to the build quality. Going hands-on with pre-production versions of the new phone, the change from last year’s model to the next is stark. In addition to the flip phone upgrade, Samsung also announced the Z Fold5, Galaxy Tab S9, and Galaxy Watch6 devices.

All in all, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5 don’t really move the needle when it comes to foldables, which is a real shame considering how strong the competition has been this year. For the Z Fold 5 in particular, I was really expecting better cameras or at least a larger battery, as those were two things I found lacking with the Z Fold 4. However, the Z Flip 5’s larger cover display does at least bring a whole new dimension, and I can’t wait to really explore all the things it can do. The only slight issue is the price of the Z Flip 5 in particular. Even discounting the base price naturally jumping up thanks to Samsung discontinuing the 128GB model, the flip phone is still RM100 more than it was before, though the extra utility of that new cover display does help make up for that.

As much as Samsung wants to close the gap when clamping these phones shut, it appears reluctant to thicken the rear camera bump to accommodate something better. Could a periscope telephoto lens be possible? I would think so. How about a larger image sensor for the main camera that befits the premium category these phones sit in? If the question is whether or not people would accept bigger bumps in the camera module, then maybe Samsung could figure out what’s ultimately acceptable. The joy with these phones is the ability to orient and position them almost effortlessly in some cases — a huge advantage over the typical phone slabs. But then the pendulum largely swings the other way when it comes to actual output. If you love foldable phones and mobile photography, you’re left with a tough choice in both the Fold 5 and Flip 5 since both do advance the former, but the latter is left to languish.

In my full review of Flip 5, I’ll put these two handsets head to head to determine which device is the best clamshell foldable in Canada. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 5 is an undeniably premium foldable smartphone, but I hope I can do more with its front cover display than what I’ve experienced so far. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 5 starts at $1,299. The foldable is available to pre-order now and releases on August 11th.

In 2023, Samsung introduced some essential updates to the Galaxy Z Flip 5. Now, it has a highly functional outer display that allows data input. The hinge is decidedly better designed, and the gap between the displays has been eliminated. While these changes might seem basic to some, they affect daily use significantly, particularly considering the relatively slow development within the foldable device category. Moreover, Samsung not only doubled the internal storage of the series but also maintained the same prices as last year's lineup. This may not sound as impressive as it should, given the typically high prices in the foldable phone market. Trust me, it's good news. On the flip side (heh!), the Z Flip 5 continues Samsung's trend of conservative upgrades, which is somewhat disappointing.

If you’re coming from the Galaxy Z Flip4, the Z Flip5 is a suitable upgrade, especially with the newer gapless hinge design and the large cover display that increases its functionality when folded. The cameras–despite looking to have the same hardware on paper–do appear to be significantly better as well. The updated internals are well appreciated, though we have to see if the battery life is decent since Samsung did not upgrade the battery capacity on the Z Flip5.

For the first time, it feels like Samsung is playing catch-up in the foldable phone space. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 has to match the larger front screen and all the functionality that comes with it on the Motorola Razr Plus. Samsung, however, is still the more established brand and we expect it to deliver with good battery life and a solid camera performance. Will the Flip 5 be the best clamshell foldable phone on the market? It's way too early to tell, but it has good chances. It's clearly the most improved Flip so far, so that's definitely something.
