Als das Galaxy S8 vorgestellt wurde, ging es darum, den Patzer mit dem Galaxy Note 7 wieder auszugleichen. Wir bekamen ein gehöriges Design-Upgrade, bessere Hardware, alle Note-7-Features (ohne S-Pen) plus Bixby, also deutlich mehr Neues als jetzt mit dem Galaxy S9 (gähn!).

Dieser Umstand generierte allerdings sehr viel Aufmerksamkeit und viele waren schnell gespannt auf das neueste Samsung-Smartphone, das Galaxy S8.

Mit dem B-Ware-Handy habe ich ein tolles Smartphone ergattert, das genau meinen Ansprüchen entspricht. Nach anfänglicher Skepsis gegenüber dem Thema B-Ware bin ich nun davon überzeugt, dass dies eine tolle Möglichkeit ist, um wirklich Geld zu sparen. Das Samsung Galaxy S8 ist insgesamt ein gelungenes Smartphone auf dem neusten Stand der Technik geworden. Das Infinity-Display überzeugt mit einem exzellenten Bild und erhält trotz der großen Bildfläche die nötige Kompaktheit. Die Leistung des Smartphones markiert den derzeitigen Stand der Technik und wird im Android-Kosmos nur von dem Xiaomi Mi6 geschlagen.

Samsungs neues Galaxy S8 beeindruckt direkt auf den ersten Blick. Denn das Handy zeichnet sich durch ein grandioses Design aus. Mit 5,8 Zoll ist das Display zwar relativ groß, allerdings wahrt das Galaxy S8 aufgrund der sehr dünnen Ränder eine angenehme Gesamtgröße. Dazu kommt eine sehr ergonomische Bauweise des Smartphones. Einen physischen Home-Button sucht man vergeblich.

Das Samsung Galaxy S8 ist ohne Zweifel ein gelungenes und hübsch anzusehendes Smartphone. Herausragendes Feature ist das besonders große und fast randlose Display. So bleibt das Smartphone selber kompakt, obwohl viel Fläche zur Anzeige zur Verfügung steht. Die Technik ist aktuell und leistungsstark, auch, wenn sich das Galaxy S8 nicht ganz so deutlich von anderen Top-Smartphones abheben kann wie frühere Modelle der S-Reihe. Dafür hielt der Akku im Test deutlich länger durch als beim Vorgänger.

Samsung hat vieles richtig gemacht, aber meiner Meinung nach sich zu sehr auf das Infinity Display und die Optik konzentriert. Wie so häufig wurden dabei dann unscheinbare, aber essentielle Dinge wie der Lautsprecher oder der Akku vernachlässigt. Auch der Fail mit dem Fingerabdruckscanner ist mir vollkommen unverständlich.

Samsung setzt beim S8 auf die Kamera des Vorgängermodells, große Unterscheide gibt es also nicht. Bei Tageslicht haben wir nichts anderes als traumhafte Aufnahmen erwartet. Doch auch in der Nacht hat das S8+ wunderbare Momentaufnahmen produziert. Wer oft unterwegs ist und seine Eindrücke festhalten möchte, ist mit dem S8 gut bedient.

Das Gesamtpaket stimmt für den User, auch weil Samsung an viele nützliche Details gedacht hat. So ist das Smartphone wasserdicht, der Speicher kann erweitert werden, drahtloses Laden ist möglich, und sogar einen Kopfhörer-Anschluss findet man. Das ist ja keine Selbstverständlichkeit mehr.

Die längere Bauweise hat aber den Vorteil, dass die Bedienung mit einer Hand leichter fällt als bei vergleichbaren Smartphones im üblichen 16:9-Format; die abgerundeten Seitenkanten helfen hierbei.

Mit Bixby will Samsung zu viel. Die Idee, in einer App mehrere Anwendungen zu vereinen, ist gut. Dabei nicht von vorn anzufangen, sondern die Datenbanken anderer Unternehmen zu verwenden, ist ebenso sinnvoll. Auch ist der Ansatz, Bixby mit Spracherkennung auszustatten, lobenswert. Nur braucht Bixbys Künstliche Intelligenz viel mehr Informationen, um schlauer zu werden.

Die Funktion ist so besonders, dass Ihr Samsung gar eine eigene Hardware-Taste spendiert. Ob Bixby aber tatsächlich einen guten Job macht, ist fraglich: Deutsch gibt es aktuell nicht, wer mit seinem Handy sprechen möchte, muss Chinesisch, Englisch oder Koreanisch sprechen.

Ein perfektes Smartphone gibt es bekanntlich nicht. So muss sich auch das Samsung Galaxy S8 Kritik gefallen lassen. Für unseren Geschmack hätte die Akkulaufzeit länger, der Fingerabdruck-Scanner besser platziert und der Assistent Bixby weiter ausgebaut sein müssen. Diese wenigen Mankos rücken allerdings schnell in den Hintergrund in Anbetracht der starken Kamera und dem grandiosen Bildschirm.

Samsungs Galaxy S8 ist eine erfrischende Abwechslung zum Smartphone-Einheitsbrei, der in den vergangenen Jahren auf den Markt geworfen wurde. Mit dem gebogenen Edge-Display stand man zwar bereits zuvor aus der Masse hervor, einen wirklichen Nutzen lieferte das aber nicht. Mit dem “Infinity”-Bildschirm bietet man aber tatsächlich Mehrwert: Mehr Bildschirm auf gleicher Fläche.

Betrachtet man das Galaxy S8 im Kontext seiner Vorgänger, stellt sich ein wenig Ernüchterung ein, weil das S8 doch recht nah am S7 Edge ist. Aber es gibt Unterschiede: Es hat einen größeren Bildschirm bei ähnlichen Maßen, einen etwas schnelleren Prozessor, erwartungsgemäß ist auch der interne Speicher auf 64 Gigabyte gewachsen, und es kann mit dem Iris-Scanner entriegelt werden.

Natürlich ist es immer schwer, sich nach nur wenigen Minuten ein Urteil zu einem Gerät zu bilden. Das Galaxy S8 und das Galaxy S8 Plus überzeugten aber in diesen wenigen Minuten schon auf ganz Linie. Unterm Strich ist das an dem neuen Galaxy S8 also gar nicht so viel neu, wie es auf den ersten Blick erscheinen mag: Samsung schafft es einmal mehr mit einem spektakulär in Szene gesetzten Bildschirm ein großes Staunen zu erzeugen, die hardwaretechnischen Veränderungen waren in der Form erwartbar, manches ist noch vom Galaxy S7 bekannt - die Koreaner setzen einmal mehr auf eine sanfte Evolution der Serie.

However, while the S8’s front camera cannot quite keep up with the latest high-end smartphones, it still delivers very solid results, with mostly good exposures and a very good balance between noise reduction and detail preservation in still image mode. Selfie videos are pretty good, too, with the exception of a slightly ineffective stabilization system that can result in distortion effects. Overall, the Galaxy S8 is still an attractive option for the budding selfie shooter, despite its age.

The large, bezel-less display is truly iconic and beautiful, and the screen quality excellent. The fingerprint scanner being placed on the back of the phone is a poor decision from Samsung, as well as the iris scanner / facial recognition not working anywhere near well enough to be a real consideration. However, these aren’t deal breakers, and the improved battery life and tweaked camera will be among the best you’ll find on a top-end flagship. The Galaxy S8 is an expensive phone - have no doubts about that - but it’s one that we consider to be well worth the investment.

I’ve since moved onto the HTC U11 — which charmed me with great battery life and an even better camera — but more recently I’ve transitioned to the OnePlus 5 my daily driver. The lightning quick fingerprint sensor, insane amount of RAM, and stupid fast speed of the phone was enough to keep me. I still think the Galaxy S8 is a great phone, don’t get me wrong. But I do feel like there are better options out there for someone craving the absolute best performance from an Android device.

Even though this might not be the best phone, the Galaxy S8 is definitely the best smartphone from Samsung till date. It has a brilliant Infinite display that blends seamlessly into the body of the phone on all the side and the new Samsung UX complements it. Build quality of the phone is good and the performance is good as well without any lags. One of the main concerns is the placement of the fingerprint sensor on the back that makes it useless. Hope the upcoming Galaxy Note8 will use under-glass fingerprint sensor as rumored. Samsung could also have used a better camera sensor to compete with the Google Pixel, since the images taken on the S8 is not a huge improvement compared to Galaxy S7. We still have to wait to find out how the English version of the Bixby voice compares with Google Assistant and Siri.

Now, should you run out and buy this phone? I’d recommend it, for sure, but it’s not the only phone I’d recommend. There’s a lot of great options out there and the S8/S8+ are just two of the best. Throughout this review, we saw that the taller display could be a double-edged sword. On one hand, it does allow for more content to be shown without increasing the width of the phone, which is always good, but on the other, it can lead to usability discomfort in case the user interface and the content viewed are not optimized well enough for the extravagant aspect ratio. Samsung found the right formula in the Galaxy S8. It dialed in the exact amounts of high design, technical power, and quality build needed to deliver a near-perfect smartphone. The S8's flaws are so few and far between I can hardly bring myself to bother repeating them here because everything else is so darned good. The Infinity Display and the metal/glass chassis that embraces it are impressive beyond words. The oblong shape may require a short adjustment period, but I assure you you'll fall in love with the S8, if not for its good looks then for its proven performance and winning personality. Call quality and data speeds are great, battery life is about average, and other hardware facets do their jobs perfectly.

In all seriousness, I wonder if perhaps I'd feel differently towards the software on the Galaxy S8 if it weren't for the fiery battery fiasco that preceded it. This is a phone that felt at home in my hands when I went hands-on with it for several hours at a journalist briefing in San Francisco. Better even than the LG G6, which has similar proportions but no curved screen, and sleeker than the iPhone 7 Plus, which puts a smaller screen on taller, wider body. For the first time, every major Samsung phone is an "Edge" model, with the Edge and Note's curve-screen software and all.

Prolific leaker Evan Blass posted expected European pricing for both phones a few days ago and it isn’t pretty. Even accounting the fact that European pricing will always be higher due to higher taxes, you can expect the Galaxy S8 to be priced near the 40K mark, while the Galaxy S8+ will certainly be in the low 40’s. That’s pricing approaching iPhone territory, though you will have to consider that both devices use large, hard-to-produce curved Super AMOLED panels. Still, that price though.

Modell: Das Samsung Galaxy S8 gehört zu jenen Phones, die gegen die beeindruckend starke Konkurrenz von 2017 antreten. Es handelt sich um ein sehr starkes Phone mit großartigem Design und Hardware. Einer der bemerkenswertesten Veränderungen am Galaxy S8 ist, dass ihm der nach vorne gerichtete Home-Button abhanden gekommen ist. Das Galaxy S8 kommt also ohne mechanische Tasten an der Vorderseite aus. Samsung hat zwei Smartphones mit großen, schönen Bildschirmen hergestellt, die beide angenehmer zu verwenden sind als alle vergleichbaren Modellen von Konkurrenten. Obwohl das Infinity Display (wie Samsung seine Bemühungen um ein rahmenloses Design nennt) nicht vollständig rahmenlos ist, scheint es dennoch bis zur Rückseite zu verlaufen. Es handelt sich um das weitem niedrigste Körper-zu-Bildschirm-Verhältnis, das man bis jetzt in einem global verfügbaren Flagship-Phone antrifft. Außerdem hat Samsung zwei Jahre lang versucht, die Welt davon zu überzeugen, dass ein gebogener Bildschirm die beste Wahl ist und, dass man so einen bei diesem Phone antrifft, ist ein Beweis dafür.

Der 5,8-Zoll-Bildschirm ist dicht in den Rahmen gepackt, doch er ist dennoch mit 148,90 x 68 x 8 mm groß. Der Fingerabdruckleser befindet sich an der Rückseite neben der Kamera. Der 5,8 Zoll große Super-AMOLED-Bildschirm ist klar, hell und farbenfroh und löst in QHD auf. Allerdings ist bemerkenswert, dass das QHD-Element standardmäßig verringert wird: User beginnen mit Full-HD-Auflösung. Daher muss die volle Auflösung erst in den Einstellungen aktiviert werden. Da diese es ermöglicht, mehr Inhalt am Phone anzuzeigen, wurden alle internen Apps auf die Nutzung dieses größeren Platzes optimiert.

Zudem hat Samsung Bixby auf den Markt gebracht. Dabei handelt es sich um den eigenen intelligenten Assistenten des Herstellers. Das Samsung Galaxy S8 ist definitiv ein Zugpferd für dieses AI-Service. An der Seite des Galaxy S8 gibt es eine eigenständige Bixby-Taste. Damit erhalten User immer unmittelbar Zugriff auf dieses Portal. Laut Samsung soll Bixby ein reibungsloser Assistent sein, der dem Nutzer durch Stimme, Kamera oder Berührung folgen kann und lernt, was der User tun möchte, ohne dass der User bestimmte Phrasen wissen müsste, damit es funktioniert. In puncto Hardware befinden sich 4 GB RAM, ein Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 Prozessor und 64 GB Speicher an Bord. Die Speicherkapazität kann via MicroSD-Slot um bis zu 256 GB erweitert werden. Die Front-Kamera wurde größeren Verbesserungen unterzogen. Sie erhielt einen neuen 8-MP-Sensor, eine f/1.7 Blende und Autofokus, was bei Selfie-Kameras immer noch selten anzutreffen ist. Zudem gibt es ein sekundäre 8-MP-Kamera an der Vorderseite. Das Samsung Galaxy S8 läuft unter dem Android 7.1 Nougat Betriebssystem. Das S8 ist definitiv eines der besten Flagship-Geräte am Markt, doch das bedeutet auch, dass es mehr kostet als die Mitbewerber.
