Alles in allem kommt mit dem Samsung Galaxy S8+ ein griffiger Smartphone-Riese der Highend-Klasse auf dem Markt, der sich kaum das Wasser reichen lässt. Der Prozessor ist der derzeit leistungsfähigste unter den Androiden, der Speicher mit 64 Gigabyte ausreichend bemessen, LTE, WLAN ac und Bluetooth sorgen für eine schnelle Funkverbindung.

Das Samsung Galaxy S8+ ist schon ein richtig geiles Teil: Es hat Leistung ohne Ende und ist dementsprechend schnell in der Bedienung, macht ordentliche Fotos und das Infinity Display ist schon ein echter Gamechanger. Ich war mit meinem treuen S7 (ohne Edge) bislang eigentlich ganz zufrieden. Aber je länger ich das S8+ benutzte, umso mehr wirkte mein altes, kleines S7… nun ja… alt… und klein.

Dass ich nicht in Begeisterungsstürme deswegen ausbreche liegt daran, dass dieser Schritt voriges Jahr vom Note 7 vorweggenommen wurde. Da war zwar der Rahmen noch größer, die exzellente Verarbeitung und das besser gebogene Display gab es aber bereits.

If you are an iPhone user this phone might be tempting, but iOS (and iMessage in particular) are hard to break away from if you are used to them, and the iPhone 7 Plus offers a fantastic larger phone experience with my favorite dual-camera implementation right now. The Galaxy S8+ didn’t end up with a second rear camera sensor, which I can only assume we will see with the Note 8. It also didn’t end up with an embedded fingerprint sensor, as mentioned above. Like I said, the GS8+ is almost perfect. But I still want one.

Even accounting the fact that European pricing will always be higher due to higher taxes, you can expect the Galaxy S8 to be priced near the 40K mark, while the Galaxy S8+ will certainly be in the low 40’s. That’s pricing approaching iPhone territory, though you will have to consider that both devices use large, hard-to-produce curved Super AMOLED panels. Still, that price though.

Das Samsung Galaxy S8+ ist ein Smartphone, bei welchem Samsung jeden Teil des Layouts überdacht hat, um die Grenzen von Smartphone-Bildschirmen zu überschreiten. User erhalten reinen Inhalt ohne Rahmen. Es handelt sich um den größten und umfassendsten Bildschirm an einem Galaxy-Smartphone dieser Größe. Zudem lässt sich das Phone leicht in der Hand halten. Das Samsung Galaxy S8+ verfügt nicht nur über einen beeindruckenden Bildschirm, sondern auch über eine starke Hardwarespezifikation und Design. Das Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus ist ein weiteres Ganz-Glas-Design um einen dünnen Metall-Rahmen und seine randlosen, gebogenen Seiten sind mit ultra-schlanken Rahmen an Ober- und Unterkante kombiniert. Das Galaxy S8 Plus stellt dies noch mehr zur Schau als das S8. Es verfügt über einen großen 6.2-Zoll-Bildschirm in wahrhaft Phablet-Abmessungen von 159,5 x 73,4 x 8,1 mm. Es wiegt 173 g. An der Vorderseite gibt es keinen physikalischen Home-Button mehr. Stattdessen nutzt das Phone einen On-Screen-Home-Button. Es ist in drei Farbvarianten erhältlich: Midnight, Orchid Gray und Arctic Silver. In puncto Bildschirm nutzt das S8+ ein AMOLED-Panel mit einer Quad-HD-Auflösung von 2660 x 1440 Pixeln, die super-scharf aussieht. Ein Faktor, der dazu beträgt, ist Mobile HDR (high dynamic range). Das ist ein tolles Zusatzmerkmal. Samsung sagt, es würde sich um das erste Phone mit Mobile HDR Premium handeln. HDR sorgt für sattere Farben, tiefere Schwarztöne und besseren Kontrast und lässt Inhalte generell realistischer aussehen. On-Screen-Buttons sind bei anderen Android-Phones beliebt, denn sie ermöglichen eine größere Bildschirmfläche, doch für langjährige Samsung-User ist dies eine große Veränderung. Der Fingerabdruckleser wurde an die Rückseite neben die Kamera verlegt. Samsung bietet auch eine Reihe von anderen Möglichkeiten, das Phone zu entsperren. Außer dem Fingerabdruckleser und der üblichen Passcode-Methode, stehen ein Iris-Scanner und Gesichtserkennung dafür zur Verfügung.

Weiters bietet das Galaxy S8+ Bixby, das mit Apples Siri und Androids Google Assistant konkurrieren soll. Bixby steht durchs ganze Betriebssystem, in der Kamera und seinem eigenen Home-Screen-Button zur Verfügung. Der Vorteil von Bixby ist, dass es eine systemweit intelligente Schnittstelle für das Galaxy S8 Plus ist. User können das gesamte Phone durch Bixby steuern. Wie Siri, können Nutzer ihm Fragen stellen und es kann Basisaufgaben erledigen. Zudem ist zur Aktivierung von Bixby kein schwerfälliges „Wake-Word“ notwendig, denn unterhalb des Lautstärkereglers gibt es eine Taste, die nur dafür gedacht ist Bixby zu öffnen. Das Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus bietet Leistung der neuen Generation, welche zu seinem futuristischen Design passt. Es verfügt über ein 10 nm Octa-Core-Chipset und 4 GB RAM. Das S8 Plus liefert 64 GB internen Speicher. Via seines MicroSD-Slot kann die Speicherkapazität um bis zu 256 GB erweitert werden. In puncto Kamera gibt es eine einzigen 12-MP-Sensor mit weiter f/1.7-Linse an der Rückseite, die die gleiche Dual-Pixel-Technologie nutzt wie das S7. Ein neuer Multi-Frame-Image-Prozessor nimmt bei jeden Auslösen drei Bilder auf und reduziert damit Verschwommenheit für ein schärferes Einzelfoto. Die Front-Kamera wurde stärker verbessert. Der neue 8-MP-Sensor verfügt über eine f/1.7 Blende und – noch selten bei Selfie-Kameras – Autofokus. Alle diese beeindruckenden Merkmale zusammen ergeben zweifelsohne ein Smartphone, das es für jedes kommende Flagship zu schlagen gilt.

Die Galaxy S Produktlinie wird als Flaggschiff-Serie von Samsung erachtet. Als solche hat sie deutliche Spuren am Phone-Markt hinterlassen und Technik- sowie Trend-Fans begeistert. „Samsung knows how to make a premium Android smartphone. For the past few years, every addition to their Galaxy S series has absolutely nailed it, shooting Samsung to the top of the popularity charts”, schreibt TechSpot. Das neue Galaxy S8+ ist dabei keine Ausnahme. KnowYourMobile.com berichtet: „ As of right now, though, the Galaxy S8 - and Galaxy S8 Plus - are the hottest handsets on the planet. The handsets are designed to help Samsung retain its number one status as King of the Phone Market in 2017/18”. Nun sehen wir uns dieses Flaggschiff-Phone mit seinen vielen Upgrades genauer an.

Design

Über das Design schreibt KnowYourMobile, “The main thing is that the Galaxy S8 series has only become curvier and more streamlined than its already notably curved predecessors; the corners are completely smoothed and rounded, while the curvature of the edge display follows a continuous line from front to back where it meets a perfectly symmetrical rear panel, with only a thin silver of bodywork separating two”. TechSpot berichtet, die Vorderseite des Phones würde vom Bildschirm absolut dominiert werden und zwar so stark, dass jedes andere Smartphone dagegen wie von der vorigen Generation aussähe. AndroidBeat meint, das S8+ würde sich in der Hand super-geschmeidig und super-solide anfühlen: „It’s like finding an alien object, fallen from space and polished smooth by centuries of space dust abrasion - there are no sharp edges”. PCAdvisor äußert sich über die Größe des Galaxy S8 Plus: „The Plus model isn’t a vastly bigger than the regular Galaxy S8. It’s around 10nm taller and 5mm wider which isn’t much to jump from a 5.8 to 6.2 inch screen”. Dagegen klagt TechRadar, das Galaxy S8 Plus wäre augenscheinlich nicht das ideale Phone für jedermann und zwar aus mehr Gründen als, dass es für die Bedienung mit einer Hand zu groß wäre. Diese Seite fügt hinzu: „Having no physical home button is going to be a deal breaker for Samsung fans and their muscle memory”. Laut TrustedReviews schmiegt sich das Phone dank seiner gebogenen Vorder- und Rückseite gut in die Hand und das knappe Design dehnt die Hand nicht ganz so stark wie beim Halten eines iPhone 7 Plus. Für EnGadget.com wirkt das Phone von den abgerundeten Ecken bis zu den präzise geformten Körper aus Metall und Glas wie eine kleinere und elegantere Version des Galaxy Note 7.

Display

Der Test von KnowYourMobile berichtet, dass es sich beim Bildschirm nun um einen 6,2 Zoll großes Super-AMOLED-Modell handle – fast so groß wie beim Galaxy Note – doch der Bildschirm würde viel mehr von der Vorderseite einnehmen. In der Tat bestünde die Vorderseite des Bildschirms mit einem Bildschirm-zu-Gehäuse-Verhältnis von 84 % und einem 18:9 Seitenverhältnis fast nur aus Bildschirm. „In term of display area, which becomes the most important metric to compare displays of different aspect ratios, the Galaxy S8 Plus’s display is 17 percent larger than the Galaxy S7 Edge’s display thanks to its extra height”, berichtet TechSpot. Außerdem rahmen laut AndroidBeat virtuelle Steuerelemente entlang der Unterkante und die Android-Statusleiste an der Oberseite den Inhalt auf traditionelle Art, wenn man Android nutzt. Übernimmt allerdings eine Anwendung (z.B. Video-Wiedergabe) die Steuerung des gesamten Bildschirms, ist das wie der Moment im Kino, zu welchem die Seitenteile verschwinden und alles plötzlich größer und breiter wird. Positiv merkt PCAdvisor an, dass der Bildschirm standardmäßig FHD+ (2220 x 1080) nutzt, dabei jedoch großartig aussieht, sodass man nicht das Gefühl hätte auf Quad HD umstellen zu wollen, obwohl man das in den Einstellungen auf Wunsch machen könnte – oder sogar auf 720p verringern. Im Besonderen meint TechRadar über den Bildschirm des Galaxy S8 Plus, dass der Bildschirm eindeutig Lesen erleichtern würde und Split-Screen-Multitasking weniger beengt wirken würde. Doch wegen Abweichen vom herkömmlichen 16:9-Verhältnis würde das Phone bei Video-Wiedergabe schwarze Balken darstellen: „This didn’t bother us as much as we thought it would, and it’s partly because every S8 color option has a black front face. It blends really well”. “It’s the only phone so far to have been Mobile HDR Premium certified by the same UHD Alliance that will certify HDR TVs. HDR is a big step up for televisions, offering better contrast and a brighter picture - and while it’s great to see it trickle down to phones, neither Netflix or Amazon Prime have updated their apps to support it yet”, berichtet TrustedReviews.

Audio und Lautsprecher

Generell bewertet KnowYourMobile, die Audioqualität des Lautsprecher, die auch bei hoher Lautstärke beibehalten wird, als ziemlich beeindruckend. TechSpot meint dagegen: „The built-in speaker is just a single edge-firing unit with mediocre quality, and that’s perhaps the weakest aspect of this phone’s sound experience. The phone does support 32-bit/382kHz high quality audio through the headphone jack, though”. TechRadar zeigt sich mit dem Lautsprecher des Galaxy S8 Plus auch unzufrieden. Was vorzeitlich wäre, wäre der einzelne Lautsprecher an der Unterseite. Er wäre leicht den Lautsprechergrill versehentlich abzudecken, wenn man YouTube-Videos im Querformat schaut. Wo Apple etwas mit dem iPhone 7 voraus hat, wäre ein echtes Problem. Dagegen berichtet AndroidBeat, Samsung würde ausgezeichnete Kopfhörer von AKG mitliefern. Diese hätten einen guten Bass eine und allgemeine Wiedergabetreue und wären bei weitem besser als die Ohrhörer, die Samsung mitzuliefern pflegte: „Well done all round - I really enjoyed headphone audio from the S8+”.

Leistung

Der verwendete Samsungs 64-bit Exynos 9 8895 Octa-Prozessor nutzt vier 2,3 GHz Exynos M2 “Mongoose” Core und vier 1,7 GHz ARM Cortex-A53 Kerne und basiert auf der ARM v8 Mikroarchitektur hergestellt im 10nm FinFET-Verfahren. Weiters verfügt das Phone über eine Mali-G71 MP20 mit einer Taktrate von 546 MHz und 4 GB LPDDR4X RAM. KnowYourMobile berichtet, dass laut einigen Berichten aus den USA, ein 10 nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 etwas bessere Leistung erreichen würde. Laut TechSpot ist es klar, dass das Galaxy S8 Plus bei CPU-beschränkter Last das Galaxy S7 Edge deutlich übertreffen würde: „Those upgrading from the Exynos-powered Galaxy S6 will enjoy 37 percent better CPU performance on average”. Positiv schreibt AndroidBeat, das Galaxy S8 Plus wäre schnell, doch man hätte beim Navigieren in der Benutzeroberfläche den Eindruck, dass die „Samsung experience“-Oberfläche die Leistung etwas bremst – allerdings nur wenig. PCAdvisor lobt die Leistung: „The S8 Plus is also a top performer and we can’t say we’ve noticed it lag or slow down at all”. Bei den von TechRadar durchgeführten Geekbench-Benchmarks fuhr das Exynos-Chipset ein Multi-Core-Ergebnis von 6630 Punkten ein während das Qualcomm-Chipset durchschnittlich ein Multi-Core-Ergebnis von 6000 erreicht: „More importantly, we experienced no slowdown other than gradually appearing Bixby animations - that’s not actual slowdown”. TrustedReviews schreibt Bluetooth 5.0 wäre ein weiteres Merkmal, das das Phone zukunftssicher wirken lassen würde und eines der Ärgernisse, die der Tester mit Bluetooth hatte, beseitigte. Diese Seite fügt hinzu, sie hätten nun zwei Geräte gleichzeitig anschließen können, was großartig wäre, wenn man das gleiche Lied mit zwei Kopfhörerpaaren hören möchte. Außerdem schreibt EnGadget.com: „The S8 and S8 Plus are effortlessly fast machines, and hardly anything I threw at them over a week of testing got them to shutter. This is mostly due to the shiny new Snapdragon 835 and 4GB of RAM onboard”. Schließlich bewertet der Tester von KnowYourMobile, dass das Galaxy S8 Plus eines der schnellsten und reaktionsfreudigten Phones wäre, das er seit einiger Zeit nutzte. Vor allem die Touch-Eingabe würde viel ausgereifter wirken als bei den meisten Konkurrenten: „It doesn’t balk at multitasking either, happily racking up app after app in the background, and the memory seems intelligent enough to keep switching smooth when restoring a hibernating app”.

Kamera

TechSpot schreibt, das Galaxy S8 Plus würde den gleichen 12 MP Samsung S5K2L1 (oder Sony IMX260) 1/2.5” CMOS-Sensor mit 1.4㎛ Pixel, Dual-Pixel-PDAF-Technologie nutzen wie das Galaxy S7 Edge. Dieser wurde mit f/1.7 26 mm Linse und optischer Bildstabilisierung kombiniert. Als Pluspunkt erachtet PCAdvisor, dass das Galaxy S7 eine fantastische Kamera hätte und Samsung keinen Anlass gesehen hätte diese beim S8 Plus großartig zu verändern: „Overall, the camera app is smooth and responsive, and as you would expect offers plenty of different models and filters to play around with”. Laut AndroidBeat könnte es sich aktuell um die beste All-Round-Kamera der Welt handeln: „Video is optically stabilised and optionally electrically stabilised too, at up to 4K and with good stereo audio capture and that same lightning fast focus as with stills”. TechRadar meint, die nach vorne gerichtete Kamera des Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus wäre stärker aufgerüstet worden, was sich in Spezifikation und Gesamtleistung widerspiegeln würde. Außerdem schreibt TrustedReviews: „It’s a great camera for varying situations, whether you’re taking landscape shots or portraits in daytime or at night. The new auto HDR mode is turned on by default, levelling out exposure and contrast in brighter conditions, and does a very good job of ensuring that every photo you take looks great”. Ebenso bewertet KnowYourMobile, die kleinen Optimierungen wären sehr vorsichtig und genau gewesen und hätten Gesamtqualität und Aufnahme-Erfahrung stark verbessert.

Akkulaufzeit

KnowYourMobile kommentiert, das Galaxy S8 Plus böte die beste Akkulaufzeit unter allen Smartphones, die der Tester jemals getestet hatte: „I’ve pretty much only had to charge it a couple of times since I got hold of it”. Für TechSpot liefert das Galaxy S7 Edge eine fantastische Akkulaufzeit und es wäre großartig, dass das Galaxy S8+ hier an die Leistung des Vorgängers anschließen würde. PCAdvisor ergänzt: „During our time with the S8 Plus we’ve found it comfortably lasting a 24 hour period of usage but it’s unlikely to get through a second day unless you’re a particularly light user”. Laut TechRadar wäre das Galaxy S8 Plus ausreichend energieeffizient, um eine Akkulaufzeit von eineinhalb Tagen zu liefern und sie hätten auch bei anspruchsvoller Photo- und Video-Verwendung nicht täglich aufladen müssen. Dieser Seite erklärt zudem, dass dies besonders an dem kleineren und weniger stromfressenden 10-nm-Chipset läge und teilweise daran, dass die standardmäßige Full HD Bildschirmauflösung fast so gut aussieht wie die maximale Quad-HD-Auflösung. Zudem hat EnGadget.com aufgezeichnet: „The winner, though, is the S8 Plus and its 3500mAh battery. It clocked in at 15 hours 8 minutes in an HD video at 50 percent screen brightness while the phone is connected to Wi-fi, longer than the Pixel XL, Note 7 and Moto Z Force”.

Fazit

KnowYourMobile fasst zusammen: „This is easily the best phone on the market when it comes to battery life, so if you’re looking for a handset that will go the distance - look no further”. TechRadar meint: „It features the best phone display, chipset and camera of any phone to date. In other words, it has the best looks, most power and is extremely photogenic”. Meiner Meinung nach kann das Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus als außergewöhnliches Smartphone mit vielen Vorteilen wie einem fantastischen Design, einer unabhängig von den Lichtverhältnissen zuverlässigen Kamera und dem besten Bildschirm unter allen Phones erachtet werden. Allerdings gibt es einige kleinere Mängel, die User etwas verärgern könnten: nur ein Lautsprecher, schlechte Position des Fingerabdrucklesers, Bixby bleibt wertlos. TechSpot fasst zusammen: „At the end of the day, the Galaxy S8 Plus is a phone I’d recommend to most buyer, but only if you’re willing to put up with its fragility”.

ARM Mali-G71 MP20: Z.b. im Samsung Exynos 9 8895 integrierter ARM-Grafikchip für Smartphones und Tablets mit 20 Kernen / Clustern. Für Android Systeme zählt die GPU zu den High-End Grafikkarten und sollte auch anspruchsvolle 3D Spiele flüssig in hohen Auflösungen darstellen können.

Einige nicht anspruchsvolle aktuelle Spiele können mit geringen Details noch flüssig gespielt werden. Für Office und Video natürlich ausreichende Leistungsreserven.
