Die AMD Radeon RX 460 ist eine im Einstiegsbereich angesiedelte Gaming-Grafikkarte für Desktop-PCs. Sie wurde im August 2016 vorgestellt und basiert auf den kleineren Polaris-11-Chip (123 mm²) welcher in 14 nm FinFET hergestellt wird. Die RX 470 und RX 480 im Gegensatz dazu basieren auf den größeren Polaris-10-Chip (232 mm²). Die RX 460 bietet 14 der 16 Compute Units des Chips, alle 16 ROPs, 56 TMUs, vier 32-Bit-Speicher-Controller und 1-MB-L2-Cache. AMD gibt für die RX460 einen Referenztakt von 1.080 (Basis) bis 1.200 MHz (Turbo) an. Die Partnerkarten können hier noch etwas darüber liegen (wie z.B. die 1.220 MHz bei unserer Testkarte von XFX). Im Gegensatz zu Polaris 10, unterstützt Polaris 11 das Power-Gating zwischen den einzelnen Compute Units. Dadurch kann besonders im Teillastbereich Strom gespart werden.

Je nach Speicherausstattung (2 bzw 4 GB GDDR5) kann sich die Spieleperformance der RX 460 deutlich unterscheiden. Speicherintensive Spiele wie Doom, Black Ops 3 oder Mirror's Edge leiden deutlich bei nur 2 GB. Die 4 GB Version positioniert sich im Test bei uns knapp oberhalb der mobilen GeForce GTX 965M (Refresh) und auch der Desktop MSI Radeon R7 370. Dadurch eignet sie sich am besten für aktuelle Spiele in Full HD bei hohen Detail-Settings. Besonders in neuen DirectX 12 und Vulcan Spielen kann die RX 460 glänzen.

Bei den Features zeigt sich der Polaris-11-Chip auf Höhe der Zeit und unterstützt DirectX 12, Vulkan, DisplayPort 1.3 HBR (1.4 Ready), HDMI 2.0, FreeSync, HDR und H.265 En- und Decoding. Dank 14nm FinFET Prozess hat sich der Stromverbrauch im Vergleich mit einer ähnlich schnellen R7 370 deutlich verbessert. Ohne Last ist die RX 460 auch deutlich sparsamer als die RX 470 und 480 und ist nur minimal höher als z.B. die teure GTX 1070 Founders Edition. Auch unter Last ist sie deutlich sparsamer als die alte R7 370 und in etwa vergleichbar mit Maxwell Chips (GTX 950 - 960).

Die AMD Radeon RX 470 für Laptops (RX 470M) ist eine im mittleren Preissegment angesiedelte Grafikkarte und mobile Version der Desktop RX 470.  Bis jetzt sind die genauen Spezifikationen nicht bekannt, die GPU wird jedoch in den neuen Alienware Notebooks als Option angeboten und sollte auf den selben Polaris-10-Chip wie die Desktop Version basieren. Eventuell sind mehr Shader freigeschaltet (Desktop 2.304) bei niedrigeren Taktraten. Die Performance sollte eventuell etwas niedriger ausfallen, aber im selben Leistungsbereich. Die Desktop Version ordnet sich gut 10 Prozent unterhalb der Desktop RX 480 ein und erreicht knapp das Leistungsniveau der Nvidia GeForce GTX 970. Aktuelle Spiele des Jahres 2016 werden so in den meisten Fällen in FullHD-Auflösung und höchsten Einstellungen flüssig dargestellt.

Leistungsaufnahme

Der TDP der Desktop Radeon RX 470 wird von AMD mit 120 Watt spezifiziert, die mobile Variante sollte deutlich weniger Strom brauchen (selektierte Chips und angepassen Spezifikationen). Trotzdem, eigenet sich die GPU nur für große und schwere Notebooks.
