The Oppo Reno 4 Pro is a good-looking piece of hardware that might cut it for someone who values design and needs a phone for general use. However, it really isn’t meant for photography enthusiasts or gamers. The 65W charging is handy to have, but since the Snapdragon 720G doesn’t really tax the 4,000mAh battery, it can be a bit of overkill. After all is said and done, it’s hard to justify the chipset and average cameras at this price point. This makes the Oppo Reno 4 Pro a tough sell unless you really want the fastest charging speeds around.

With the Reno4 Pro 5G, Oppo has released an exquisitely-manufactured smartphone that’s fully capable in terms of its performance and photography, sitting between devices in the conventional premium and mid-range brackets. In light of its excellent build quality and dazzling OLED display, it’s often easy to forget you aren’t handling a more premium device, although the lack of high-end features does occasionally snap you back into reality.

If you are in the market for a smartphone that has a premium build, looks good, and is comfortable to hold with many of the features associated with more expensive handsets, the Reno 4 Pro 5G is certainly worth splashing the cash. The AMOLED display shines and the cameras produce good results, reliably, and the phone is pretty to look at too.

The Oppo Reno4 Pro 5G offers very high-resolution 32 MP selfies characterized by stable and consistent focus with fairly good detail if you keep your face close to the screen. It’s fair to say it doesn’t really trouble the best mid-range front cameras we’ve tested for overall image quality, though. If super selfies are a key driver in your smartphone requirements, similarly priced devices such as the Google Pixel 5 or ZenFone 7 Pro offer a step up for color, detail, and dynamic range. That said, the Reno4 Pro 5G nails the most important aspect of selfies with nicely exposed faces in most shots. Add to that fairly neutral white balance, a competent bokeh mode, along with acceptable overall video quality, and the Reno4 Pro 5G’s front camera will keep the Oppo faithful happy.

Oppo’s latest headlining Reno may well be a premium mid-ranger smartphone, but when it comes to audio, it is only an average performer. That said, the 4 Pro 5G is extremely consistent, delivering an average performance in almost every sub-category of our Audio protocol. Its main weakness is a lack of high- and low-end extension in both playback and recording, which impairs its timbre, dynamics, and spatial performance. Further, its microphones are easily occluded, and its recordings exhibit fairly low loudness in most use cases. Still, the Reno4 Pro 5G delivers a very good playback volume performance, better timbre and spatial results when filming in loud environments, and relatively clean background recordings.

The Oppo Reno4 Pro 5G turns in a mixed imaging performance. In good light it captures a lot of detail with nice colors, but noise impacts quality in both stills and videos. The tele camera has some weaknesses, too, though it’s much better than not having one. Relatively speaking, video performance is bit stronger than stills, especially if you don’t like to walk and shoot video at the same time. As of this writing, the Reno4 Pro’s pricing puts it on the higher end of mid-range handsets and competition in this segment is fierce, but phone pricing can fluctuate quite a bit over time and from region to region, so interested buyers should have a closer look at this phone, especially if video is high up on your list of priorities.

It should come as no surprise that we were left feeling a bit empty after spending time with the Reno 4 Pro. It’s time for phone makers to stop adding camera sensors just to say that the phone has them. It’s also time for there to be a little bit more focus on software integration with the camera if these companies really want to turn some heads. Truth be told, if the Reno 4 Pro had a little bit better camera performance and a faster chipset, then it would be amongst the best phones of the year. The plastic back feels great, the display is not overly curved, and the extra features like the faster refresh rate and headphone jack are nice touches. But Oppo just missed the mark in too many other areas for us to be blown away.

That's not to say it's a bad phone - quite the opposite. An enjoyable handling experience gets you started, and you then go ahead to enjoy its bright 90Hz display. Pictures come out great under most circumstances, with respectable performance into the night as well. The battery will easily carry you there too, and you don't need to bother with overnight charging when a full charge takes half an hour. Solid stuff indeed. But not at €750, not at all.

At €799/£699, it can be a bit hard to justify those sacrifices, but this is still a good phone. I'd say it might be more justified if you get the Green Glitter version, since you're getting something that looks unique and absolutely beautiful. However, that model only seems to be available in the UK. You can find the phone on OPPO's website, if you're interested, and you also get Bang & Olufsen H4 headphones - which are worth £250/€300 - for free until November 13.

While the Oppo Reno 4 Pro is a strong mid-range phone on its own, given the vast variety of competitors in this field, savvy consumers have plenty of options to choose from, and it would seem that Oppo Reno4 Pro’s high asking price could make it lose out to its competitors without its own niche and strong unique selling point to differentiate itself. Perhaps it’s a great asset to IG and TikTok creators who need a device out of the box to fulfil their immediate needs with a great looking screen, super-fast charging and pleasing images and videos that are ready to be published, but is that really enough when numerous third-party camera apps and shooters exist to complement any other phone device of choice? It’s a tough ask for S$899.

Midrange phones have developed a reputation for being boring over the past few years. They often come with overused features and unmemorable names. But Chinese phone-maker Oppo's new Reno 4 Pro is chipping away at that narrative. The Reno 4 Pro, which launched in India in July, is technically a midrange phone, but it's packed with features typically found in more fancy flagships. It has a curved 90Hz display, ultrafast charging and a set of stereo speakers. But because it is a midrange phone after all, it does make some sacrifices. The biggest thing missing is 5G capability which, if you're planning on keeping the Reno 4 Pro for a few years, you'll want your next phone to have. Oppo says that's because it wants the phone to "better fit" the countries it'll be released in.

For Rs 34,990, Reno 4 Pro is overpriced for the specifications it offers. Yes, it has the industry-best 65W fast charging, some really good cameras, and a marvellous design but the trade-offs are not compelling enough to justify the price. Moreover, OnePlus Nord and Realme X3 are more competitive and offer more features, better gaming performance, and on par photography just without the 65W fast charging. The price gap is so wide the Oppo's six-month-old Reno 3 Pro seems pricier than the OnePlus Nord. Oppo is the next far-eastern star on the mobile horizon and the goal is obviously to catch up with Huawei and Xiaomi. Oppo is doing this by trying to push innovations like periscope cameras, in-display fingerprint scanners, and, of course, Super VOOC fast charging in its phones. This technology alone is enough to wow many people and rightfully so. The Oppo Reno4 Pro takes the fast charging game to new levels, offering a full charge of its 4000 mAh battery in just 43 minutes (36 minutes advertised).

The OPPO Reno 4 Pro is clearly a capable phone that checks all the basics and meets most users’ requirements. It is plenty strong and its cameras are good and the charging speed addresses one of the biggest pain points in mobile life. That, however, may not be enough for the phone to stand out in an increasing monoculture that is the mid-tier smartphone market.
