We’ve gone pretty hard on the phones on the software side, but the reality is that they’re affordable, high quality alternatives to the top-tier phones from the big manufacturers. Color OS simply isn’t to our tastes at all – It makes Oppo’s amazing hardware feel just the little bit more pedestrian and uninspired, and it made it a tough sell to stick with the phones for longer than the review period when our usual day-to-day phones feature a more Android-like UI. There’s an increasing number of Aussies out there buying Oppo’s phones though, and it makes us feel that our criticism of Color OS is perhaps a bit off-base for general consumers.

In a nutshell, the Oppo R9s and Oppo R9s Plus are reasonably decent phones - all the expected functionality for its price point, good design (albeit it looks very familiar) and has an acceptable set of cameras for normal photography and high resolution selfies. However in these days, a decent phone for a reasonable price may not be adequate and Oppo needs to be concerned about competition.

The OPPO R9s has an excellent camera, offers impressive battery life, and features a nice display. However, the number of compromises here is staggering. Among derivative design and software, the R9s has sloppy software, offers below average performance, and has a bleak software support outlook. For Western users, the strange display coating, YouTube audio sync issue, and limited availability are even bigger issues to consider.

Selling for AUD$598 with 64GB of storage, the OPPO R9s is a great deal, but it’s slightly difficult to recommend over the significantly cheaper F1s if you don’t need the extra bells and whistles, such as the better camera or the horsepower. Vanilla Android would push this phone over the edge and make it an easily recommendable device over its competitors, but as it stands you’ll have to weigh up whether you can deal with the slightly odd operating system. If the operating system isn’t a problem, then you’re getting one of the best value-for-money phones on the market.

Oppo’s R9s story is all about the price. We don’t know for sure but if it lands in New Zealand at NZ$750 it’ll be competitive. For that money you get most of what you’ll find in premium phones selling for twice the price.

Comparing it with the F1s, both phones share a lot of similarities and one might even opt for the F1s for being cheaper at RM1198, whereas the R9S stands at RM1798. That’s a RM600 difference and it’s easily understood why some customers won’t go for the R9S. However, the R9S is a lot better in terms of picture quality, and the performance is better with a Snapdragon 625 processor. Let’s not forget the awesome battery recharge technology as well. Despite these good points, we still wished OPPO could have been more creative in their design department for it. Seriously, guys.

The Xiaomi Mi 5 is a worthy contender, although it doesn’t have the same expandable storage, and the excellent OnePlus 3 is a smidge more expensive, but packs a more powerful Snapdragon 820 chip. In any case, both examples do not have the will to last as long as the R9s.

That said, Oppo's execution is the best, and this isn't just because of the six-string antenna design (though that's a big part of it). The R9s has the same screen size as the iPhone 7 Plus, but you wouldn't guess it - the Oppo is so much more compact and lighter. The fingerprint reader is faster than Apple's too.

Modell: Unlängst hat sich eine Unterkategorie des 5,5-Zoll-Markts von erstklassigen Mittelklasse-Phones entwickelt und das R9s gehört zu den Besten von diesen. Diese erstklassigen Mittelklasse-Phones konzentrieren sich auf Kamera-Leistung und Akkulaufzeit ohne zum vollwertigen Flagship zu werden. Das Oppo R9s misst 153 x 74,3 x 6,6 mm und wiegt 145 g. Damit ist es in allen Dimensionen kleiner als das iPhone 7 Plus, obwohl beide mit 5,5-Zoll-Bildschirmen und Home-Buttons mit Fingerabdruckleser ausgestattet sind. Die Kamera erreicht jedoch definitiv Flapship-Niveau. Sie nutzt den neuesten Sony-Sensor, der Dual-Pixel-Autofokus unterstützt, über eine sehr helle f/1.7 Linse verfügt und Videos in 4K 2160p aufnehmen kann. Dies verbessert die Leistung der rückwärtigen Kamera unter schlechten Lichtbedingungen. Optische Bildstabilisierung fehlt, doch Videoaufnahmen profitieren von elektronischer Bildstabilisierung (EIS). Zudem verspricht eine 16-MP-Kamera an der Vorderseite großartige Selfies. In puncto Design gehört das R9s zu den ersten Geräten, die ein "Six-String"-Design nutzen. An der Rückseite gibt es sechs Rillen, drei davon nahe der Oberkante, die anderen drei nahe der Unterkante. Sie sind ein attraktives Designelement und funktionieren genauso gut wie die üblichen dicken Kunststoff-Antennen-Linien, über welche die meisten Phones aus Metall verfügen. Das Metall weist eine Satin-Oberfläche auf, die sich weich anfühlt und Fingerabdrücke großartig versteckt. Die Fassung des Glases an der Vorderseite wurde poliert, sodass das Phone etwas schimmert.

Das Oppo R9s verfügt über ein AMOLED-Display. Das ist eine Überraschung, denn viele 5,5 Zoll große Bildschirme mit 1.080 x 1.920 Pixel-Auflösung sind im Mittelklasse-Markt LCD-Bildschirme. Es liefert einen besseren Kontrast und bessere Lesbarkeit im Sonnenlicht sowie lebendige Farben. Der Bildschirm wird von kratzfestem Gorilla Glass 5 geschützt. Mit dem R9s hat OPPO vom Mediatek Helio P10 auf einen Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 gewechselt. Das bedeutet, dass das R9s über acht Low-Power-Cores und über keine Höchstleistungskerne verfügt. Dank 4 GB RAM sollten User keine Probleme mit mäßigen bis starkem Multitasking haben. Der große 3010 mAh Akku für Betrieb über einen ganzen Tag sorgt für erfreuliche Standby-Zeiten. Wird der Ladestand niedrig, ermöglicht VOOC-Fast-Charging eine Sprechzeit von 120 Minuten nach 5 Minuten Laden. Außerdem verfügt das Phone dank ColorOS 3.0 über einige Stromspartechniken, die standardmäßig eingeschaltet sind. Daher übernimmt das Phone beim Beenden von Hintergrundaktivitäten oft selbst die Initiative. Das Oppo R9s ist ein Dual-SIM-Phone das ein Qualcomm-Chipset nutzt. Daher bietet es ausgezeichnete Unterstützung von verschiedenen kabellosen Verbindungen. Dazu gehören einige LTE-Varianten, GSM und CDMA. Zudem wird VoLTE für verbesserte Audioqualität unterstützt. Lokale Verbindungen werden mit Wi-Fi ac und Bluetooth 4.1 auch gut überstützt. Man beachte, dass das Phone jedoch aus irgendeinem Grund kein NFC bietet. Das Oppo R9s ist ein perfektes Beispiel, was dieser chinesische Hersteller kann. Es mag sich nicht um das Beste Smartphone seiner Kategorie handeln, doch es liefert seiner Konkurrenz dennoch einen harten Wettkampf.
