Die elfte Auflage des Microsoft Surface Pro macht einen echten Sprung nach vorn. Vor allem die größeren Modelle, denn die bringen ein OLED-Display in Topqualität mit: superscharf, sehr farbtreu, sehr hell, wenn nötig, und extrem kontrastreich. Unter der Haube hat sich auch eine Menge getan. Der neue Snapdragon-Prozessor ist beim Arbeiten richtig schnell, hat jede Menge Power für KI-Anwendungen und ist sehr sparsam. Dadurch hält das Surface fast 11 Stunden mit einer Akkuladung durch.

They cost extra and they're not exactly cheap, with the Flex keyboard and Slim Pen combo running $449.

The options to remove background distractions and use blur effects to simulate portrait mode were useful; the styling options, which transform a photo into an alternate style (Impressionist, Anime, and so on) feel gimmicky. The real question is whether those features are powerful enough to make you switch from your current image-processing tool to one of Microsoft's built-in options. History says that's a pretty big ask. Even if you avoid the AI features completely, though, there's more than enough power in this budget PC. And as long as your apps and hardware requirements aren't exotic, you'll appreciate its cool, quiet operation.

It's taken 12 years, but Microsoft has finally made an Arm-powered Surface tablet that senior editor Devindra Hardawar doesn't want to toss out of a window. The new Surface Pro, one of the company's first Copilot+ AI PCs, is astoundingly fast and power-efficient, thanks to Qualcomm's new Snapdragon X Elite chip. It can run native Arm apps well — but even better, it can also emulate older apps without much fuss. Basically, Microsoft has finally managed to do what Apple did with its M-series MacBooks four years ago.

EN→DEThe Surface Pro 11 impressed me more than any of the earlier models, and if you're willing to take a little bit of risk with compatibility -- Microsoft's got a lot of software partners lined up to deliver native versions of major applications, but a promise isn't a guarantee -- and that you won't care if a potentially better performing model comes out in a month or two, I recommend it for upgraders. And because I haven't tested the lower-power Snapdragon X Plus, I can't extrapolate how the performance compares for the cheaper models. Or you can wait a few months and know for sure.

But you know, there’s a decent case to be made that a chunk of the world’s business/productivity PCs could eventually switch from X86 to Arm. That’s what they need, after all: long battery life and moderate performance. But the Snapdragon X Elite undercuts that. Snapdragons have always been engines of weak to moderately-powered PCs, but with battery life that lasts and lasts. Now, Qualcomm is dashing to become the fastest CPU. And it’s succeeding, at least when plugged in. But on battery, under load — and especially with an unoptimized app that requires it to rev up and rev up hard — Arm’s sacrificing battery life for additional performance.

EN→DEThe Surface Pro is fast, stylish and, together with the Flex keyboard, lets me work comfortably almost anywhere. While I'd love to see a different kickstand design eventually, and I think the keyboards should definitely be cheaper, Microsoft has done the impossible with the Surface Pro Copilot+ PC: It's created an Arm-based Surface I don't hate. I dare say, I love it.

While the base model could deliver meaningful improvements over its predecessors for the same price if the Snapdragon X Plus chip is as good as advertised, I have to admit it's the OLED upgrade that has my attention. It's a small thing that could make this Windows 11 slate feel a lot more premium, especially if it can deliver vivid colors in tandem with killer battery life. We're looking forward to finding out exactly how well these tablets live up to the hype in a full review, so stay tuned!

Microsoft's new Surface Pro, its first hybrid Copilot+ PC tablet, doesn't look much different than its predecessors. It's still a sleek and sturdy tablet with a kickstand. But the screen looks a bit more impressive, thanks to slimmer bezels, and it's potentially more useful on the go when paired with the $350 Surface Pro Flex keyboard, which lets you type wirelessly. As a Copilot+ AI PC though, its true value lies under the hood, thanks to a 45TOPS neural processing unit in Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus chips.

Das Surface Pro (2017) ist die fünfte Generation der Surface-Pro-Familie. Es handelt sich hierbei um ein robustes und solides Stück Hardware mit einer immensen Ausstrahlung von Qualität. Das Design ist angelehnt an den Vorgänger Surface Pro 4 und nur minimal verändert, stellt jedoch trotzdem eine Verbesserung dar. Die Ecken sind noch abgerundeter und die Lüftungsschlitze an den Kanten noch unauffälliger. Im Surface Pro stecken kaum bewegliche Teile. Ein/Ausschalter sowie Lautstärkeregelung an der Oberseite sind leicht zu ertasten und haben einen klaren Druckpunkt. Der Kickstand genannte Ständer ist intuitiv bedienbar und hält das Tablet in jeder Lage stabil. Er öffnet sich bis zu 165 Grad, eine Steigerung gegenüber den 150 Grad des Surface Pro 4. Vollständig geöffnet wird das Surface Pro fast zum vollständig flachen Slate. Im Tablet Mode, also bei zurückgelegtem Type Cover, wird die Tastatur automatisch deaktiviert. Auch Windows 10 kann hierbei falls gewünscht automatisch in den Tablet-Modus versetzt werden. Angebracht wird es am Tablet mittels starker Magnete und via physikalischem Port damit verbunden - es gibt also keinerlei Verzögerung beim Tippen. Das Surface Pro verfügt über jeweils zwei nach vorne gerichtete Lautsprecher auf jeder Seite des Displays. Im Glas befinden sich winzige Einschnitte um die Schallwelle durchzulassen und das Design führt zu einem für ein Tablet beeindruckenden Sounderlebnis. Die Musikwiedergabe ist hervorragend, mit einem überraschend weitreichenden Umfang und sogar einem Hauch von Bass. Die Lautsprecher werden überraschend laut und können einen durchschnittlich großen Raum problemlos und ohne Verzerrung beschallen.
Ausgestattet mit Intel-Prozessoren der 7. Generation bis hin zum Core i7, 16 GB Arbeitsspeicher und einer 1 TB SSD bietet das Surface Pro neueste CPU-Technologie gepaart mit einer Vielzahl an RAM- und SSD-Optionen sowie vollen Support für alle aktuellen und innovativen Windows-10-Technologien. All das trägt dazu bei, dass das Gerät noch viele Jahre lang aktuell bleiben wird. Bloatware ist Mangelware, das Surface Pro ist lediglich mit den normalen Windows-10-Apps und einer Handvoll Gelegenheitsspielen ausgestattet. Weitergehende unerwünschte Software fehlt jedoch komplett. Mit Hilfe des Surface Utility kann der Surface Pen konfiguriert werden, außerdem zeigt es nützliche Informationen zum Gerät an. Der 45-Wh-Akku des Surface Pro ist eine Steigerung im Vergleich zum 38-Wh-Akku des Vorgängers, außerdem setzt das aktuelle Modell auf effizientere Prozessoren aus Intels 7. Core-Generation. Diese Kombination führt zu einer im Vergleich zum Vorgänger deutlich erhöhten Akkulaufzeit. Mit gerade mal 0,84 cm Dicke und einem Gewicht von nur 785 g ist das Surface Pro extrem portabel und mobil. Selbst mit montiertem Signature Type Cover lässt es sich problemlos in die Tasche stecken. Es mag vielleicht nicht ganz so dünn und leicht sein wie das iPad Pro, es ist jedoch um ein Vielfaches performanter und noch dazu in der Lage, vollwertige PC-Anwendungen auszuführen. Das Surface Pro ist eine Neudefinition des Tablets. Es ähnelt dem iPad, nur dass es ein vollwertiger Computer ist.

Qualcomm Adreno X1-85 3.8 TFLOPS: Die Qualcomm Snapdragon X Adreno X1-85 (3.8TFLOPS) ist die schwächere GPU in the Snapdragon X Elite SoCs mit nur 3,8 statt 4,6 TFLOPS an Leistung. Wahrscheinlich wird dies durch weniger Taktraten und / oder weniger Kerne erreicht.
Durch aktuell eingeschränkten Treibersupport und Spieleunterstüztung ist die 3D-Leistung und Kompabilität in Spielen jedoch nicht vergleichbar mit Nvidia und AMD iGPUs.
Diese Klasse ist noch durchaus fähig neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mehr mit allen Details und in hohen Auflösungen. Besonders anspruchsvolle Spiele laufen nur in minimalen Detailstufen, wodurch die grafische Qualität oft deutlich leidet. Diese Klasse ist nur noch für Gelegenheitsspieler empfehlenswert. Der Stromverbrauch von modernen Grafikkarten in dieser Klasse ist dafür geringer und erlaubt auch bessere Akkulaufzeiten.

Dieser Bereich des Displayformats bildet weitgehend die Obergrenze für Tablets und die Untergrenze für Subnotebooks.
Der Vorteil von Subnotebooks liegt darin, dass das ganze Notebook klein dimensioniert sein kann und daher leicht tragbar ist. Das winzige Display hat noch den Vorteil wenig Strom zu benötigen, was die Akkulaufzeit und damit die Mobilität weiter verbessert. Der Nachteil ist, dass das Lesen von Texten anstrengend für die Augen ist. Hohe Auflösungen, die man von einem Standard-Laptop gewohnt ist, sind fast nicht nutzbar.
