Overall, it’s a bit of a mixed bag from the Surface Pro 9. While it’s perfectly capable of doing the job it’s designed to do, the hardware can’t quite match the best in the business. The Apple M2 iPad Pro is not only quicker all round, it has a better display, camera and speakers. Apple’s 2-in-1 is the gold standard for this type of device and it gets more capable year on year. It’s also more expensive than the similarly capable Samsung Galaxy Book2 Pro 360. However, not everyone gets on with using iPadOS over a more traditional desktop OS and many prefer the flexibility and portability of the detachable 2-in-1 form factor. For those folk, it’s hard to look anywhere other than the Microsoft Surface Pro 9. It’s beautifully designed and lightweight, lovely to use, performs well across the board and delivers a decent upgrade over the Surface Pro 8.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 9 comes in two guises this year. You either opt for the mobile-based ARM model or the more traditional Intel option. This is a review of the latter, so there's no complaining about sluggish emulated apps here. In our opinion, you are better off sticking with the Intel model (either an i5 or an i7) as it works oh so well. When it comes to kitting out your employees with computers, it's fair to say that 2-in-1 and detachable laptops aren't always the first to be considered. But the Surface Pro 9 is arguably the best option in that laptop category. It is certainly more appealing than the Surface Laptop 5, which could have been so much more. However, you do need to pay extra for both the detachable keyboard and the Surface Slim Pen 2 stylus.

In real world use, the less than 2lb computer is great. While reviewers cover the minutia of the Surface Pro 9, at the end of the day, it still remains the gold standard of 2-in-1’s. While there are other 2-in-1’s cropping up that offer better specs in some areas, or more appealing price differentials, the Surface Pro 9 continues to deliver one of the nicest overall convertible packages. While the new aesthetic is a relatively young design, I would hope that Microsoft improves up some of the chassis underlying tech such as reintroducing an SD card reader, upgrading the hardware and software (Windows 11) display tech for more optimized battery consumption, adding haptic feedback to its separately sold keyboard, and overhauling the camera array in both software and hardware. Until then, the Surface Pro 9 stands as the best refinement of the lineup since Microsoft jumped from the 10.6-inch chunky Pro and Pro 2 design to the thinner 12-inch Surface Pro 3. After a decade, Microsoft has gotten about as close as Intel will let them in actualizing their vision for a portable PC experience, the question that remains is what’s coming in the next 10 years?

After more than a decade, Microsoft’s Intel-based Surface Pro line is still an engineering marvel with few true challengers. A beautiful 3:2 screen, a sturdy and lightweight design, an all-day battery, and a selection of quality accessories make it a highly practical tablet with the performance to reliably replace a laptop. Minimal port selection and the lack of 5G connectivity are its biggest shortcomings; the latter requires you to get the SQ3 Surface Pro 9 and accept lower performance and cumbersome app compatibility. The Surface Pro 9’s $999 starting price puts it far out of the budget territory, especially once you add storage and RAM upgrades (much less an arguably necessary keyboard cover). Microsoft's official accessories can also be expensive, but occasional promotions can considerably knock down prices. Competition comes mainly from Dell’s XPS 13 2-in-1, but it’s not much cheaper and can’t compete with the Surface’s battery life. All told, like many Surface Pro models before it, the Intel-based Microsoft Surface Pro 9 thoroughly impresses and takes home a well-deserved Editors' Choice award among high-end Windows tablets.

The accessories are the ones that will really get to you. Prices of the Surface Pro keyboard start at S$268 and the Surface Pen is S$208. If you want both, definitely get the keyboard and pen bundle which is better value at S$428. No matter what, it’ll add to the cost of your Surface Pro 9 system considerably. The system I tested has a Core i7 processor, 16GB of memory, and 256GB of storage which is S$2,488. If you add the keyboard and pen, that goes up to S$2,916. Even if you add the keyboard alone, which I consider a must-have accessory, it’s still S$2,756. The Surface Pro has never been a cheap device, and the same is true for this latest version. If you are looking for a Windows device that is equal parts notebook and tablet, there’s no contest. The Surface Pro is the best device for this. Build quality is tip-top, the display is brilliant, performance is good, and battery life remains decent, even if it’s not quite as good as the model it replaces. Really, the only stumbling block is its price.

The ARM-based Surface Pro 9 combines superb battery life with extra webcam features and 5G, but a clear drop in performance and reduced app compatibility means the Intel version is better for most people. It doesn’t stand out on the same way, but delivers a great all-round experience.

The strongest argument for the Surface Pro is just how much it can do. It will replace a laptop, the only real downside being that the trackpad isn't quite as good as you'll get on some laptops, but it will run all the applications you'd expect a Windows machine to run. It will work as a tablet, accepting that it's then running desktop apps which might not be all as fancy as you'll get on optimised iPad apps - but you can at least have parity with a Windows desktop you might have. But it's a little chunky as a tablet. If you want something super portable, but perfectly capable in a bigger desktop setup, you can have that too - with a proper desktop OS, not a compromised mobile OS. But the Surface Pro 9 is still a jack of all trades while being the clichéd master of none: the skill that Surface Pro 9 actually masters, is versatility.

So where does that leave us? Frankly, $1,700 is not a bad deal for what this tablet brings you. It has the power to spare, and an expansive screen that is good for media consumption and work-related activities. It's very portable, and the type cover makes this machine a functional laptop. My main concerns are the battery life, the speakers, and the fact that Microsoft still, after all these years, does not include at least the keyboard in the box. That's the most unforgivable point from a philosophical standpoint. The battery is the biggest pain point from a practical standpoint. However, the ability to charge over USB-C means you don't necessarily have to carry around the Surface Pro 9's brick-on-a-string proprietary adapter. A good GAN charger and USB-C cable of sufficient length should do the job. Considering the power the tablet brings, and its ability to fit into my shoulder bag, this is the machine I'll be carrying to CES in January. I just hope I won't have to sit in a chair and work with this on my lap while I'm there.

Just like the devices that came before it, the Microsoft Surface Pro 9 is as good as it gets for tablets that transform into a laptop and vice versa because it works just as well in both forms. While it may not be the most portable tablet or the most powerful laptop, it does offer a happy medium between the two - something you don't often get elsewhere. To make the most out of everything the Microsoft Surface Pro 9 has to offer, you will definitely need to invest in the Surface Pro Signature Keyboard. Not only will it allow you to type on it as you would a regular PC, but the included stylus will also mean you get the most out of the touchscreen display as well.

Still, I would be remiss not to disclose, for any who might not be aware, that the Surface Pro — Intel- or Qualcomm-powered — is an expensive device. This test model, alongside the sapphire keyboard and pen, would come out to $1,879.98. If the Microsoft hardware and branding are largely what draw you to the Pro (and those are legitimate things to be after, to be sure), the Surface Laptop 5 will provide this same processor, same RAM, a decent color selection, and twice the storage for $179.99 less than our test model (and the base Surface Laptop 5 is $279.99 less than the cheapest Pro 9 model, also for twice the storage). If what you really want is the tablet form factor with a detachable keyboard and pen, a similarly specced 12.9-inch iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard included still comes out to over $200 cheaper than my test unit.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 9 isn't a bad or worthless machine. It's powerful enough to handle everyday computing tasks, has a decent screen for watching videos and is lightweight enough to comfortably take wherever you go. It may not redefine the 2-in-1, but if you want something that's suitable as a laptop or tablet, this machine gets the job done. With that said, it's still hard for me to recommend the Surface Pro 9 to anyone but the most die-hard fans of this series. Even if it's pricier, I'd suggest the Samsung Galaxy Book2 Pro 360 ($1,249). Not only is it more powerful, it has a gorgeous 15.6-inch AMOLED display. The Lenovo Yoga 9i Gen 7 ($1,449) is another excellent 2-in-1 well worth checking out. And of course, if you want an Apple product, the iPad Pro 2022 ($1,099) is another device I'd highly recommend.

The 2022 MS Surface Pro 9 Windows 2-in-1 tablet PC is now available in Intel and ARM (Qualcomm SQ3) versions. We look at the 12th gen Intel Core i7 model in this review. Regardless of processor, you get a 13” Pixel Sense IPS high resolution display supporting touch and pen, Wi-Fi 6E, and a connector for the Signature Type Cover. It still uses the Surface Connect for charging (though you can charge via USB-C), and Intel models have 2 Thunderbolt 4 ports (USB-C on the SQ3). As ever, all but the Core i7 models are silent and fanless. It’s available in 4 colors. We look at the Surface Pro 9 and its pen as a tool for artists too.

By now you may be wondering, "Is there anything wrong with the Surface Pro 9?" And to that, I say, "No, and yes." My quibble with the newest flagship two-in-one is that, at a time when competitors like Lenovo and Asus are redefining the PC experience, Microsoft -- the Windows maker -- is hardly trying to reinvent the wheel, building for comfort instead. That's not to say that the Surface Pro 9 is a bad product; it'll most definitely earn a spot in our year-end rankings. I'm just finding it harder and harder to justify the tablet-laptop hybrid, especially when you factor in the cost of the $279 keyboard and Slim Pen 2 bundle, and the fact that most users eyeing this particular model will probably opt for, at least, 256GB of storage. That puts the Surface Pro 9 firmly in the $1,400 territory, where Apple's M1 and M2-powered laptops dominate.

The Surface Pro 9 remains one of the best 2-in-1 laptops you can buy. The upcoming Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 may put up quite a fight, but the Surface Pro 9’s unique set of premium features and gorgeous design keep it at the top of the pack for now. And yet, there are things that I wish were different about the Surface Pro 9. Apart from the weakened battery life and lack of a headphone jack, it’s also a bit overpriced. That’s especially true if you want both the Type Cover and Surface Slim Pen 2. You’re looking at over $1,300 for a device with only 128GB of storage. Not even Apple charges that much. And as always, you really have to be sold on the premise of the 2-in-1 to make the price worth it. Laptops like the Dell XPS 13, HP Envy x360 13, and MacBook Air are a better overall value – but they can’t function as tablets like the Surface Pro 9. Nor are they quite this compact. I still think the iPad Pro takes better advantage of its form factor, providing a far more focused touch experience. That said, the Surface Pro 9 is certainly the best the Surface has ever been, especially if you need a tablet that can replace a laptop without a hiccup.

Even though I didn’t spend much time with the Microsoft Surface Pro 9, I found it a decent upgrade to last year’s model. (Our Surface Pro 9 vs. Surface Pro 8 comparison looks at the changes in greater depth.) Because the new 2-in-1 isn’t a vast overhaul, you could argue that it might be worth skipping. That was my initial thought when I first found out about the device. However, 5G connectivity and the new NPU features could make the Surface Pro 9 a worthwhile upgrade for current Surface Pro owners. It may also be what opens up the 2-in-1 to new customers looking for their first Surface Pro computer. We should have a full review of the Microsoft Surface Pro 9 for you relatively soon. At that time, we’ll see for ourselves if this new 2-in-1 is worth buying or skipping. Stay tuned for more!

Microsoft representatives admitted there may be some confusion among some shoppers, since they can easily walk out of a store with two very different computers. But it sounds like the company is willing to deal with those usability bumps, rather than splitting the Surface Pro line once again.

Modell: Microsoft Surface Pro 9, i7-1255U jetzt bei Amazon
Serie:
