Lastly, I think 12.3″ is a bit small these days, honestly. I would like to see a more “professional” Surface Pro one day that brings back active cooling, gives us a 14″+ screen, and actually hits 8+ hours of battery life. When that happens, maybe I’ll give the SP lineup another go. For now, this one is going up on eBay.

While the Pro 7 is another fine entry in the line and tops among mainstream Windows tablets, I wouldn't tell Surface Pro 6 users to run out and get one. But if you're working with something older, or this type of device would make your working-at-home experience better, it's still one of the best 2-in-1s available. There hasn't been much worthy competition in the time since release, though the coming Lenovo ThinkPad X12 Detachable has our attention. The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 is better all around as a laptop, if that's your primary concern, but the Surface Pro sets the bar for 2-in-1s in the Windows-tablet mode.

Spending a few weeks with the Surface Pro

When it was time to pack the Surface Pro up and send it back I felt a twang of sadness. I’m used to using devices for a short while and returning them, but it isn’t often that I get attached. This time I did. I could easily see myself using the Surface Pro as my “work” device. While it is a tablet, it honestly felt just as good as a laptop and offered slightly more with its ability to turn into a notebook when I needed it for meetings or broadcast work. Its versatile and I think could easily look at it as a possible replacement for my MacBook with my desktop being my go to if needed for my heavy video editing.

Microsoft stellte zwei Surface-Pro-Tablets gleichzeitig vor, das Pro X und das Pro 7, wofür es Applaus verdient. Allerdings sind die Geräte für unterschiedliche Märkte gedacht. Das Pro X ist ein teureres, elegantes professionelles Tablet, während das Pro 7 eine günstigere Version der Surface-Pro-Varianten ist, mit einigen Ähnlichkeiten zu früheren Modellen.

Die Surface-Pro-Modelle sind für ihre Kombination von Tablet und Laptop bekannt. Das 2-in-1-Kriterium hatte sie immer von anderen Microsoft-Produkten unterschieden. Das Surface Pro 7 trägt dieses Vermächtnis weiter. Obwohl die Bildschirmgröße der des Pro 6 beinahe gleich ist (12,3 Zoll), hat das Pro 7 mehr zu bieten. Ein nennenswerter Unterschied ist der Zusatz des Surface-Pens und eingebauter Handschrifterkennung, mit denen man in Microsofts Office-Anwendungen schreiben kann. Das Surface Pro 7 verfügt außerdem über wesentlich bessere Mikrofone für ein verbessertes Nutzererlebnis. Während das Surface Pro 6 mit Intels Prozessoren achter Generation ausgerüstet war, kommen beim Pro 7 Intels neue Ice-Lake-Chips zehnter Generation zum Einsatz. Im Vergleich zum Pro 6 liefern die Prozessoren des Pro 7 eine Leistungssteigerung von 20%. In verschiedenen Bereichen ist der Unterschied bemerkbar, zum Beispiel bei 3-D-Rendering, Videokodierung und Berechnungen. Insgesamt ist die Leistung besser als bei älteren Prozessoren. Darüber hinaus steckt im Gerät Intels neue, integrierte Iris-Plus-Grafikkarte, mit der 1080p-Gamen möglich ist, obwohl nicht bei sehr hohen Einstellungen. Allerdings sollte erwähnt werden, dass sie nicht bei der Pro-7-Version mit einem i3-Prozessor präsent ist. Das Pro-7-Modell mit dem i3-Prozessor mag zwar eine Variante des Pro 7 sein, doch es eignet sich eher für Nutzer, die nur leichte Anwendungen benutzen.

Das Surface Pro 7 ist mit einem MikroSDXC-Steckplatz ausgestattet, der den MikroSD-Steckplatz des Pro 6 ersetzt. Dies bedeutet einfach, dass das Pro 7 SD-Karten mit höheren Kapazitäten lesen kann, denn MikroSD-Karten funktionieren mit MikroSDXC-Steckplätzen, umgekehrt jedoch nicht. Obwohl sich das Microsoft Surface Pro 7 zum Teil wesentlich vom Pro 6 unterscheidet, gibt es auch einige klare Ähnlichkeiten. Seit beinahe drei Generationen von Surface Pros, mit dabei 5, 6 und 7, ist die Tastatur gleich geblieben. Manche sind auch der Meinung, das Pro 7 ähnele unbestreitbar dem Surface Pro 4. Das Surface Pro 7 füllt nicht die Generationslücke des Pro 6, aber vielleicht hebt Microsoft die beste Hardware und die meisten Innovationen für spätere Produkte auf.

Intel Iris Plus Graphics G7 (Ice Lake 64 EU): Integrierte Grafikkarte (in Ice-Lake G7 SoCs) der Gen. 11 Architektur mit 64 EUs (Shader-Cluster). Taktet mit 300 MHz Basistakt und 1050 bzw. 1100 MHz Boost (erste Modelle). Der Ice-Lake-Chip wird im modernen 10nm Verfahren bei Intel gefertigt und soll mit 7nm bei TSMC mithalten können.

Diese Klasse ist noch durchaus fähig neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mehr mit allen Details und in hohen Auflösungen. Besonders anspruchsvolle Spiele laufen nur in minimalen Detailstufen, wodurch die grafische Qualität oft deutlich leidet. Diese Klasse ist nur noch für Gelegenheitsspieler empfehlenswert. Der Stromverbrauch von modernen Grafikkarten in dieser Klasse ist dafür geringer und erlaubt auch bessere Akkulaufzeiten.

i7-1065G7: Auf der Ice-Lake-Architektur basierender ULV-SoC (System-on-a-Chip) für schlanke Notebooks und Ultrabooks. Integriert unter anderem vier CPU-Kerne der Sunnycove Microarchitektur mit 1,3 (Basis) - 3,9 GHz und HyperThreading sowie eine starke Iris Plus G7 Grafikeinheit und wird in 10-Nanometer-Technik gefertigt.
