The Surface Laptop Go is a fantastic device at a super-affordable price. It offers decent performance and a comfortable keyboard that’s ideal for students, office workers and social media addicts alike. The low-resolution display means it isn’t the best for streaming Netflix, but it will be tough to find better value elsewhere.

Taken in totality, there are quite a few compromises being made by Microsoft, particularly in the cheapest £549 model. This is a laptop you should only consider if you’re prepared to treat it like a Chromebook – to access cloud-based apps and mainly store files online. For these reasons, I’d still recommend the Honor MagicBook 14 over and above the Surface Laptop Go for those seeking a top-quality laptop at a bargain price. The MagicBook is a faster, more practical laptop than the £549 Surface Laptop Go and only a little less portable. There are, however, two sides to this particular debate and the more expensive Surface Laptop Go models make a lot more sense, in particular the top-end £899 configuration. At this price, the Surface Laptop Go’s all-round quality brings it into contact with laptops such as the Apple MacBook Air, Samsung Galaxy Book Ion and Microsoft’s own Surface Laptop 3 – and it more than holds its own.

The Surface Laptop Go finally satisfies customers that find it hard to pay a premium price for the regular Surface Laptop, while also satisfying their need for a more powerful machine as compared to a very low-powered (and much smaller screen) Surface Go. Even though the screen may not be Full HD equivalent, it's still decent to use and we didn't find it a drawback, plus at the same time, it offers much better portability than other full-fledged Surface devices (apart from Go). To recap, here are the configurations and prices for Surface Laptop Go, noting that all of them come with Intel Ice Lake Core i5-1035G1 processor:-

So all said and done, the advantages of the Surface Laptop Go is that it's more compact and is much more affordable than other options. As long you don't really require the extra performance potential and you really just need a simple, no-nonsense traditional laptop (with a touchscreen as a bonus) that can get by with everyday Microsoft applications or cloud applications, and you value portability particularly, the S$1,088 Surface Laptop Go is an easy recommendation. Students can also get 5% off the recommended retail price when making the purchase at the Microsoft Store.

The Surface Laptop Go reminds us a lot of the MacBook Air. It’s light, thin and looks great. If someone wants to shift from the world of Mac to the ‘dark’ side of Windows then the Surface Laptop Go makes a compelling case with its design and form factor. Microsoft isn’t selling this as a premium product and it’s evident from the display, lack of backlit keyboard and the choice of processor. The Surface Laptop Go does a lot of things right but it faces a lot of competition — from mid-range workhorses and MacBook Air. Having said that, if you are in the market for a thin, light and a dependable laptop, the Surface Laptop Go can go right at the top of your list.

The Surface Laptop Go is Microsoft's attempt to make a light and compact laptop that still has enough power to run your multimedia files. Considering the 'Go' moniker. has Microsoft compromised on anything to make it the cheapest laptop in its repertoire? We find out in our Surface Laptop Go review.

Microsoft has gone aggressive with the Surface Laptop Go pricing, which starts at Rs 63,499 for the Core i5, 4GB RAM, and 64GB storage. However, we wish that the entry-level model shipped with at least 8GB of RAM and 128GB storage. The company has also gone aggressive with its strategy to offer the Surface Laptop Go in both commercial and consumer SKUs. We reviewed the i5 model with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage and comes at Rs 91,999. While we cannot comment about low-specced versions of the Surface Laptop Go but the one we used was a good value for money package.

From the moment I started working on the Surface Laptop Go, I have fallen in love with it. The fact that it’s small and lightweight, and also has a full-size keyboard, and is powerful enough to get the work done makes the Surface Laptop Go winner for writers and journalists. Yes, it is a little pricey, but you are paying the premium price for the Surface brand.

Although there are some quirks - such as a whistly fan, a low numbers of ports, and limited storage in the entry-level model - otherwise the balance of features and performance make for a compelling affordable laptop.

The other is that Microsoft's effort to reinvent Windows as a touch-friendly operating system to rival the iPad has utterly failed. We rarely see a Surface device used without a keyboard, and Windows 10 retreated (by necessity) from the Windows 8 vision.

The middle-ground model seems like the best value, but even then there's no shortage of keenly-priced alternatives. Still, if you don't mind paying a premium for good design, even when on a mid-range budget, the Go's styling is tough to beat.

Before saying anything, we want to address something. The “Education” version of this notebook has a model, equipped with only 4GB of memory and 64GB of eMMC storage. If you want our advice – stay away from this configuration. 4GB is not nearly enough for a Windows 10 system, and you will be stuck with the S version, because of the lack of RAM upgradeability. Also, the eMMC storage is multiple times slower than the SSD inside of our unit, which reached Read/Write speeds of 2028/822 MB/s – something respectable for a laptop of this caliber.

Thankfully, because of consolidation on I/O peripherals, I was able to power an entire workstation that included a secondary monitor, microphones, speakers, webcam, external hard drives, and wireless chargers, all without a hitch using a single USB-C dongle. If you’re looking to replace or build a workstation at home for anything shy of production or engineering level workflows, the Surface Laptop Go is a decent alternative and helps to fill in the gaps in Microsoft’s personal computing ethos that emphasizes ‘surfaces everywhere.’

If you want a premium-looking laptop with insane battery life and you have toddler-sized hands, this is a good laptop for you. Despite its humble sub $600 price tag, it drips of the same premium build quality that the rest of the Surface lineup has had since its inception. Beyond the (ahem) surface, the Surface Laptop Go has a reasonably powered Intel Core i5 mobile processor that will do for emails, social media, and some video streaming. It's a shame that you'll have to settle for watching your videos in less than 1080P, with the fans blowing at full speed for little reason.

We think Microsoft can chalk this up as another successful downsizing: although the Surface Laptop Go’s cutbacks are more frequently felt than on the Surface Go 2, it’s still clearly a laptop that’s been crafted with care. That said, it’s important not to get carried away thinking the Surface Laptop Go is a budget masterpiece; with this model’s For Business bonuses, it’s only a few notes less expensive than a mid-spec Surface Laptop 3. Personally, we’d be more tempted by the next model down from this, which is identical save for having 8GB of RAM, yet represents a hefty £168 saving before VAT.

Frankly, the pricing is the most disappointing part of the Laptop Go. There is almost no reason to spend this much money on what the Laptop Go offers. Anyone looking to get something similar can find a cheaper, better version from another PC-maker like Acer.

Microsoft’s Surface Laptop Go is a solid budget laptop reaching for good rather than great. Until Intel and its partners manage to push its 11th-gen Tiger Lake notebooks out the door, this really is the time of AMD’s mobile Ryzen. A laptop like our Editor’s Choice-winning $655 Acer Swift 3-SF314-42-R9YN is still available, and even some grumbling about thermals on Amazon’s product page shouldn’t turn you off. Walmart’s Motile M142, at $500, was also surprisingly good. Acer’s Spin 3 offers a third choice, which you can buy from Costco for $650. It too, outperforms the Surface Laptop Go, and for a lower price.

For $100 less, the 256 GB version of the Surface Laptop Go could have been a huge win for Microsoft, but in the end we think most users would be better off saving some cash and getting the 128 GB model at $699. There's enough performance on tap and storage for the apps most people need without breaking the bank on a high-end portable. For that reason, we'll tip the Microsoft Surface Laptop Go with our Recommended Award. Just keep in mind that we think its midrange configuration is the best value in the Surface Laptop Go line-up, for most people other than power users.

It’s understandable to cut corners for a good price. Some (like the lack of facial recognition) are understandable at $900. But this laptop doesn’t fit into today’s market. It’s too expensive to compete in the budget space, and it makes too many compromises to rise to the top of the midrange. When it goes on sale, maybe take another look.

I admire the concept behind the Surface Laptop Go. We too often shine the spotlight on the most expensive products when most consumers can get a perfectly capable laptop for under $1,000. What the Surface Laptop Go brings to the table is one of, if not the most, elegant designs in this price range. A few trade-offs were made to keep the price down, but those don't prevent the Surface Laptop Go from feeling any less expensive than the MacBooks and XPSs of the laptop world.

If, however, you’re willing to spend a little extra to treat your fingertips to a fantastic keyboard and trackpad, or on elevated industrial design that looks and feels a cut above that of most similarly-priced notebooks, the Surface Laptop Go makes more sense. Like other members of the Surface family, this newest model isn’t necessarily for everyone. Instead, it’s for those who can afford to budget for the areas where Microsoft has clearly focused the most.

We especially like the Editors-Choice-winning IdeaPad Flex 5 for its extraordinary blend of value and computing power. So, should you buy one? I like the Surface Laptop Go, but it's not for everyone. Here's my advice. The $550 model has pitiable storage. Just 64GB, soldered onto the motherboard, and even less after accounting for the OS. Also, running Windows 10 with 4GB of RAM can make a $500 laptop feel like a $400 laptop. I'm surmising that, because I haven't actually tested the $550 version.

The Surface Laptop Go is a really nice little laptop, little being part of the value proposition. It's not just lightweight, but it's compact. I kind of love it.
