The Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 2 is a great little machine at a highly tempting price. It’s powerful enough to be your main machine, small and light enough to carry around in a bag all day, has a great screen and it’s superbly well made. The only problem is that if you want either of the higher specification models, the prices look less reasonable at £629 and £729 respectively. For £529, however, the cheapest Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 2 is a real bargain buy and, pound for pound, the best budget laptop you can buy right now.

That being said, the screen is rather average and there are definitely other laptops out there with comparable specs but sport a better display in this price range. If you don't really prioritise portability and build quality, then the ASUS Vivobook 15X OLED might be the better choice. If you're interested in purchasing the Surface Laptop Go 2, do visit your nearest IT World or Gloo concept stores. You can also browse the online IT World Education Store and Gloo Education Store to find out more about the laptop as well as the stores' other offerings.

Microsoft is keen to push this laptop’s other security features, making much of the fact that this is a “Secured-core PC”. The idea is that you have a protected “boot path” that will spot compromised firmware, but all big laptop makers offer something similar; you can decide for yourself by reading Microsoft’s documentation. Microsoft also hopes to lure business customers with the promise of replaceable parts, but a one-year warranty and the fact that components such as memory are embedded on the board don’t really make this a selling point. But, whether you’re buying for business, home use or a mix of both, it’s price and portability that appeal here. Despite that 4GB of RAM, the base configuration is still tempting, because it would be a brilliant secondary laptop. Even if you end up buying the 8GB version with a 256GB SSD, it’s a terrific little machine for the price.

A Surface Laptop Go 2 will make sense for many buyers, and the version Microsoft sent us has enough power for a totally compromise-free everyday experience. The one snag: this version costs £729, way more than the £529 starting price. As ever, Microsoft upgrades don't come cheap. And, sadly, this is the exact version we'd recommend to anyone who will need to handle a substantial amount of data and do more than basic Office tasks. There's a lot of compelling competition from Asus, Acer, Lenovo and HP at this higher price, and some are better value than the Surface Laptop Go 2. However, you can't knock the Surface design charm and that it has a brighter screen than most laptops at this level.

For the price, this is an excellent introduction to the Microsoft Surface line, and it earns its place as a budget offering for students, work users and casual users alike. It’s not a power house – and at the price, nor should it be – but it’s eminently portable, easy to use and carry about without having to even think about packing a power cord or anything else at all. With that in mind, it’s easy to recommend the Surface Laptop Go 2 as a reasonable laptop around the $1100-1200 mark. However, if you’ve got a little more to spend – maybe as little as a couple of hundred bucks – the Surface Laptop 4 range is within reach and a bit more capable all round. Surface Laptop Go 2 from Microsoft is available on the Microsoft Store Australia, and will – soon – be available in retailers around the place as well.

It’s a shame that Microsoft has only upgraded the processor for this sequel, but I loved the original so much that it isn’t a major issue. The dinky size makes it a dream for frequent commuters, while the build quality makes it feel like a laptop that costs more than a grand. I wish Microsoft had at least improved the screen resolution though to make videos and photos look sharper. Despite its shortcomings, I still believe the Surface Laptop Go 2 is one of the absolute best Windows laptops at its price point. If you’re looking for an ultra-portable laptop for under £600, then I’d struggle to name a better value option than the Surface Laptop Go 2.

As a compact, affordable device, compromises on the Surface Laptop Go 2 are inevitable. But the core laptop experience remains impressive, provided you don’t choose the entry-level model.

While the original Surface Laptop Go survived among a sea of budget laptops, there are a number of comparably priced laptops that simply offer more value than the Surface Laptop Go 2. Just keep an eye out for price drops that could make a difference.

The Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 2 is a great choice for anyone who needs a reliable, compact and portable laptop to use day-to-day. Students, in particular, will get on well with it even if it's not quite powerful enough for some more demanding tasks.

Microsoft's Surface Laptop Go 2 is something of a mixed bag. Judged on its performance and battery life alone, this is an entry-level laptop with a distinctly mid-range price -- and some rather expensive memory upgrades. The Surface Laptop Go 2's saving grace is its sleek, ultraportable design, which is both stylish and sturdy, and well suited to hybrid and mobile working. If you value portability above everything else, then the lightweight Laptop Go 2 is certainly tempting. However, business users who need to do more than just run Microsoft Office may prefer one of the more powerful models in the Surface range, or one of its many ultraportable rivals.

The Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 2 is a moderate improvement on its predecessor, though significant changes are few. The quicker processor is the main step forward, joined by minor improvements to the webcam and a more sustainable design with some replaceable parts. Otherwise, it's the same nice budget notebook we saw the first time around, which isn't a bad thing. The build is more premium than many in this tier, and the starting price is attractive (even our bumped-up configuration is reasonable). There are a few shortcomings, but that's true for any laptop at this price. If it's a good match for your budget and you like its extra bit of style, the Surface Laptop Go 2 could be one of your best budget buys.

Running basic applications and web browsers were fine for everyday use, but I found myself defaulting to Microsoft's own Edge browser over Chrome, because it's better optimized for less powerful Windows 11 systems. In our performance tests, the 2022 version, with its 11th-gen Core i5 was indeed faster than the 2020 version's 10th-gen Core i5. But other budget laptops, like the Gateway 14 or a couple of options with AMD Ryzen 7 processors, beat it out in benchmark tests. That Gateway, one of our current budget favorites, has the same processor, but includes 16GB of RAM and a big 512GB SSD, currently for $499. It is, however, not nearly as nice looking or well made as the Surface. Despite other laptops offering better specs for the same or less money, the overall look and feel of the Surface Laptop Go 2 counts for a lot. A budget laptop isn't as useful if you don't enjoy actually using it. I'd call this a good laptop if you're interested in portability, looks and a great typing experience.

And in a way, that’s important context when comparing Microsoft’s most travel-friendly notebook to more expensive rivals. For someone like me who uses a desktop at home, the Surface Laptop Go 2 is a great travel companion and I'd much rather drag it around than the bigger and heavier Intel MacBook Pro 13 I got assigned for work. Sure, it’s not quite as powerful and it’s got a lower-res screen, but it has more than enough performance for working on the go. It's also a great machine for students or anyone who just wants a well-designed no-frills notebook that's easy to carry. It doesn’t have an IR webcam for facial login or a stylus like you get on more sophisticated Surfaces, but that's okay. Even if you pay for an upgraded model (which I highly recommend), the Surface Laptop Go 2 is still super portable, very affordable and even kind of stylish, while also having all the basics down pat.

Probably the biggest thing to be aware of when purchasing the Surface Laptop Go 2 is the display size. At 12.4 inches with a 3:2 aspect ratio, it’s small. You should plan on using apps fullscreen. Also, while an 11th-gen Core i5 and 8GB RAM is great, it’s something to be aware of in case you need more than that.
