Auch wenn das Lumia 830 gerade in Sachen Leistung besser abschneidet als das Lumia 640 XL Dual SIM, schlägt sich auch zuletzt genanntes gut im Test. Dass der Akku bei beiden austauschbar ist und dass beim größeren Lumia 640 zwei SIM-Karten eingesetzt werden können, gilt sicherlich als Pluspunkt.

Auch wenn sich Microsoft nach wie vor schwer tut, im Smartphone-Markt Fuß zu fassen: Mit Geräten wie dem Lumia 640 XL liegt der Softwareriese mit Hardwareambitionen strategisch auf dem richtigen Weg. Bei einem Straßenpreis von nicht einmal 200 Euro bekommt man mit dem Smartphone ziemlich viel für sein Geld - ein Umstand, der neben Privatleuten auch Unternehmen überzeugen könnte. Ob Microsoft damit auf seine Kosten kommt oder seine Mobility-Sparte weiter quersubventionieren muss, ist eine andere Frage.

Anyone who likes Windows Phone and has been dying for a huge canvas with which to use it will like the Lumia 640 XL. Its 5.7-inch display shows off the Live Tile interface of Microsoft's mobile operating system well, and makes it easier to do things like type messages and notes, as well as watch videos and view photos. The biggest drawback is its below-average battery life. If you want a smartphone that lasts all day and provides better overall performance, we'd recommend the $249 OneTouch Idol 3. But the Lumia 640 XL is a solid phablet for Windows Phone enthusiasts.

It’s disappointing that the battery cover could get bent out of shape so easily though, and it’s also disappointing that there is no Qi wireless charging capable battery cover available at this time. You’ll also want to get a MicroSD card since it only has 8Gb of storage. Personally, if you’re in the market for a Windows Phone 8.1 phablet, the Lumia 1520 can still be found new for less than $300.

Even the two-year-old Note 2 costs more.

We thought we'd seen the last great Windows phablet, but the Microsoft Lumia 640 XL has proven to be a more than worthy successor to the Nokia phones of old. Its size won't be for everyone, but its superior battery life and capable camera make it by far the better travel companion. Its big screen is also arguably much better suited to Microsoft's Office 365 offer, as you get more space for editing your documents. All that extra value does come at a cost, though, as the 4G version of the XL is almost another £70 on top of the SIM-free Lumia 640. Still, if you have the budget and want a phone that can go the distance, the Lumia 640 XL is an excellent choice.

During pre-launch interactions, Microsoft said it is positioning the Lumia 640 XL against Samsung's Grand series of mid-range, large-screen devices; explicitly dismissing the challenge posed by the likes of Xiaomi, Micromax, and others in the same segment. The company seems to have missed that the Grand series no longer enjoys the mindshare it once did, and by pricing the phone at Rs. 15,799, Microsoft certainly fails to acknowledge the existence of the likes of Xiaomi Redmi Note and Micromax's Yu Yureka, which offer similar specifications - and an ecosystem with a much bigger collection of apps - at nearly half the price.

Both are powered by the quad-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 SoC, which has been a favourite of low-cost manufacturers for a while now, but is getting on a bit in age. Both phones have 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage space and support for MicroSD cards of up to 128GB capacity. Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, GLONASS and FM radio are also common.

The one we handled had a glossy polycarbonate body and one of the brightest orange colors we've seen in person. These high-visibility colors are classic Lumia, Stephen Elop had the Cyan version in his hands, but there are also the more muted Black and White colors.

Sobald der Nutzer das Gerät in die Hand nimmt, fühlt er die Verarbeitungsqualität. Das Smartphone ist in weiß, himmelblau, schwarz und orange verfügbar. Mit einer Gesamthöhe von 9 mm und einem Gewicht von 171 g, passt das Microsoft Lumia 640 XL leicht in die Taschen. Das Windows-8.1-Smartphone verfügt über eine 5,7 Zoll großen HD TrueColor, ClearBlack Bildschirm. Die Farben sind bei guter Helligkeit und Kontrast wunderschön.

Der Bildschirm wird durch Corning Gorilla Glass 3 geschützt, der es robust und einfach zu reinigen macht. Die Hardware besteht aus einem Qualcomm Snaptdragon 400 Quad-Core-Prozessor mit einer Taktrate von 1,2 GHz und 1 GB RAM. Das Gerät ist mit 8 GB internen Speicher ausgestattet und unterstützt microSDs. Daher können bis zu 128 GB zusätzlicher Speicher hinzugefügt werden. Zudem inkludiert Microsoft 30 GB Cloud-Speicher.

Es gibt eine 13-MP-Hauptkamera mit ZEISS-Optik und einer f/2.0-Blende. Wie von allen modernen Lumia-Geräten zu erwarten, ist die Bildqualität ausgezeichnet. Die sekundäre 5-MP-Frontkamera ist gleichermaßen beeindruckend. Mit dem 3000 mAh Akku, der bis zu 10,7 Stunden Video-Wiedergabe ermöglicht, ist die Akkulaufzeit gut.
