Im Test lief das Netbook MSI Wind U115 über neun Stunden im Akkubetrieb - ein neuer Rekord. Das liegt aber nicht an der SSD, die das Netbook zusätzlich zur Festplatte mitbringt.
Das MSI Wind U115 ist ein Top-Netbook: Es bietet eine lange Akkulaufzeit und ein sehr helles Display. Allerdings sollte sich MSI mehr Mühe bei der Verarbeitung geben - trotz der guten Tastatur nervt das Arbeiten am instabil stehenden Netbook sehr schnell. Die Solid State Disk macht das MSI Wind U115 teurer, aber nicht besser.

Das MSI Wind Netbook geht einen erfreulich anderen Weg und bringt mit seiner Hybrid-Alternative eine willkommene Abwechslung im Netbookeinerlei. Weniger auf innovatives Design ausgerichtet hat man sich auf die inneren Werte konzentriert. Dabei verfolgt man konsequent das Ziel mobile Eigenschaften in den Vordergrund zu stellen und bietet so die Möglichkeit, bei etwas Einschränkung hinsichtlich Leistung und Speicherplatz, enorm lange Akkulaufzeiten zu erzielen. Ergänzt wird dies durch das uneingeschränkt outdoorfähige matte Display, das zudem über hohe Kontrastwerte verfügt.

Das bringt einige Probleme mit sich. Das MSI Wind U115 Hybrid begeistert mit seiner langen Akkulaufzeit von über zwölf Stunden. Die dabei eingesetzte Hybrid-Speicherlösung birgt aber einige Probleme, um deren Lösung sich der Anwender kümmern muss.

Ist Ihr Name rein zufällig Obelix? Nein? In diesem Fall haben Sie garantiert auch keine Lust einen riesigen Hinkelstein durch die Gegend zu schleppen! Ähnlich dürfte es da Besitzern von mobilen Geräten gehen. Deshalb gehören die minimalistisch gebauten Netbooks derzeit zu den beliebtesten Weggefährten. Plus: Sehr lange Akku-Laufzeit; Mattes und outdoorfreundliches Display; Saubere Verarbeitung. Minus: Schwache Leistung; Etwas teuer.

Netbooks – Inbegriff für den mobilen Lebensstil vieler Menschen. Das MSI Wind U115 Hybrid ist der Idealtypus eines solchen Mini-Notebooks. Matte, fürs Sonnenlicht taugliche Anzeige. Eine Akkulaufzeit, die einen Arbeitstag sprengt. Ein robustes Gehäuse und adäquat große Eingabegeräte. Doch alles hat seinen Preis. 560 Euro will sicher nicht jeder für ein Netbook zahlen. Vor allem nicht seit Acer im aktuellen Preiskampf sein Aspire One D150 für 300 Euro verkaufen lässt (mit Windows XP).

It has a very long battery life, 802.11n wireless networking (Ralink 1t2r), Intel GMA 500 graphics, and two storage devices: a solid-state drive and a conventional spinning hard drive. As far as netbooks go, the MSI Wind U115 is a very interesting proposition but it's not without its problems. For travellers — or anyone who wants to work for long periods of time away from a power outlet — the MSI Wind U115 is perfect. Its battery life is the longest we've seen in an Intel Atom-based netbook, lasting well over five hours. We also like the inclusion of an SSD drive, but we wish it had a larger storage capacity.

MSI Wind U115 seems perfect for work on long journeys or a day on the beach. Despite its small form factor that might discourage anyone from typing, U115’s keyboard is large enough to provide comfortable work even after a few hours of typing. The hybrid combination of SSD and HDD storage devices has its pros, most evident in long battery life, but such a thing always reflects on the price. Unfortunately, SSD pricing is still pretty high, so the U115 comes with only an 8GB SSD.

Taking a cue from automakers, MSI has created the industry's first hybrid netbook. Like a Honda Prius, the MSI Wind U115 Hybrid aims to run longer by pairing a power-saving technology with a traditional one—in this case, a solid-state drive (SSD) and a standard hard drive. It's an interesting idea, but the results are mixed. While the battery life ranges from excellent to out-of-this-world, overall performance is just average. What's more, we encountered a few technical glitches that made for a frustrating experience. Though its stellar battery life will appeal to road warriors, the pricey, bulky MSI Wind U115 Hybrid suffers from a few debilitating flaws that are hard to overlook.

All of which was not as good as MSI claims, but it’s still a worthy operational duration for a computer of this nature. We like the concept behind the Eco mode with its dual hard drives, only it wasn’t as easy to invoke. The only way of enabling this feature was from a Function Key, where as soon as the computer was rebooted all the settings were lost. Seeing as Windows does like a reboot every now and then, this could be bothersome in the long run. A better idea would be to use or run all this from a profile, which is sadly missing here and very much needed we feel.

Innovation can be a double-edged sword. While we've been frank in our criticism of netbooks for their lack of just that, it's as much a reflection of the sector and its demands as the strategy of any manufacturer - when you're trying to make low-cost devices there isn't a great deal of wiggle room! MSI should be praised for the idea of a hybrid netbook and the battery life results demonstrate that this part of the U115 is a success. However, despite a decent feature set, £450 is far too much to ask for an otherwise uninspiring netbook.

There's no denying that the U115 offers extraordinarily long battery life and its performance scores are up there with some of the best SCCs we've seen. The combination of both SSD and HDD in one unit is a clever trick, so you can use each storage medium for what it does best. The big problem with the U115, though, is its price. Even if it was just £50 cheaper, it'd be much more compelling. It doesn't have the looks to pull off a premium price tag and although it's a good performer, it's verging into traditional laptop territory.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500M: Im GL40 oder GS40 Chipsatz (Montevina Plattform) integrierte shared Memory Grafikkarte von Intel. Technisch eine geringer getaktete GMA 4500MHD (400 MHz versus 533) und durch den geringeren Takt auch kein BlueRay Logo Support.

Diese Karten können nur sehr alte und sehr anspruchslose 3D Spiele flüssig darstellen.  Anwendungen wie Office, Internet surfen, Bildbearbeitung oder (SD) Videoschnitt sind jedoch ohne große Einschränkungen möglich.

Intel Atom: Die Intel Atom Serie besteht aus 64-Bit Mikroprozessoren für günstige und stromsparende Notebooks, MIDs oder UMPC. Besonderheit der Architektur, ist das die Befehle nicht wie derzeit üblich (z. B. Intel Core Architekture oder AMD Turion) "out of Order"  sondern  "in  Order"  ausgeführt  werden. Dadurch verliert man zwar einiges an Performance, jedoch spart dies Transistoren und daher Kosten und dadurch auch etwas Strom.
