The LG Gram 17 starts at Rs 1,46,999 at the time of writing. At that price, it is tough to beat if you are looking at a device purely for extremely portable productivity. Yes, you can get the MacBook Air 15 with a more powerful M2 processor and even better battery life for Rs 1,34,900, but that comes with a much smaller display and, rather remarkably, is heavier than the Gram 17. And that actually is the biggest charm of the LG Gram – that massive display with excellent specs for productivity at an insanely light weight. You are getting a huge 17-inch display, a keyboard complete with a number pad, an Intel Evo i7 chip, 16 GB RAM, and 512 GB SSD storage…all at a weight that is less than that of a MacBook Air 15. And at its price and specs, it is pretty much in a zone of its own, especially if you value a large display and a complete keyboard. Some might hem and haw about its plastic build, but the LG Gram 17 is a lightweight notebook that is a productivity heavyweight.

The Gram 17’s two failings – the rather high Delta E on the screen and the thermal throttling – preclude an unqualified recommendation but, if you don’t plan on using it for colour-critical work or to run really CPU-intensive programmes, you’ll likely never notice either problem. And, as an example of a fully-functional large-screen lightweight laptop, the LG Gram 17 is very good. It has a big, bright colourful screen, a good keyboard, a tuneful sound system and excellent battery life. And just to repeat, it only weighs 1.35kg.

The LG Gram 17 is an impressive laptop, but it’s only right for a very specific type of person. If you really need a 17-inch display, but still want to be able to take your laptop everywhere with you, it’s the best choice out there. But if you’re looking for a performance powerhouse, this isn’t it. The Gram 17 is still plenty fast during everyday tasks, but the lack of a discrete GPU limits what it’s capable of. And as good as the display is, the lack of OLED, a high refresh rate and touch support means it falls short of the best laptop screens around. Alongside a flimsy build and that high price tag, most people will be better off with something smaller and cheaper. However, battery life and ports are both great, and I still can’t get over how light this thing is. That alone means it’s worth considering.

If LG had managed to cram, say, an RTX 3070 into this Gram Pro, the target audience would be obvious: the mobile creator. The people who want to render on planes or edit in coffee shops and don’t want to lug around a four-pound MacBook Pro 16 (or shell out the money for one). This is a substantial crowd — I hear from them all the time. With an RTX 3050, which is really just a step above Intel’s current integrated graphics offerings, the perfect buyer is harder to pinpoint. Someone who really wants to play League of Legends on a giant screen but not really any modern games? Folks with some kind of GPU load at work (but not a heavy one) who need to carry their laptop to and from the office and don’t have access to an external monitor? I don’t know, maybe those are the two groups. But for pretty much everyone else, I see a regular non-GPU LG Gram (or a Style, if LG ever manages to fix the touchpad) as a better purchase. You’ll get a lower price, better battery life, and an even lighter device.

The LG Gram 17 (2023) is not the most powerful or feature-packed laptop, but it fully delivers its promise of providing a great viewing experience on a big screen without compromising portability. However, there are a few things to nitpick (read: improve). For instance, there’s no webcam shutter, the alloy body feels more like plastic, and the giant screen wobbles. But the biggest concern is the Rs 1,42,990 (MRP Rs 1,83,000) sticker price. By spending a little extra, one could get the more feature-packed Samsung Galaxy Book3 Pro or Samsung Galaxy Book3 Pro 360 with a 16-inch display. If your priority strictly remains a super-lightweight laptop with a 17-inch display, the LG Gram 17 (2023) remains a top choice. It truly sits in a class of its own as its direct competitor, Dell XPS 17, costs over Rs 3 lakh.

The LG Gram 17 Pro (2023) is a powerful ultraportable with strong battery life that remains deceptively light despite the inclusion of a beefy discrete Nvidia GPU. The full keyboard and large display make working and browsing the web feel comfy, and when you want to unwind the screen and speakers make movies look and sound great. The power of a mid-tier 13th Gen Intel CPU and GeForce RTX 3050 GPU allow you to play a wide variety of games on this laptop too, though you'll need to dial down the settings if you want to achieve the high framerates that 144Hz display can deliver. Still, there are some drawbacks that keep me from recommending this laptop without reservation. The power cable is way too short, for one, which feels especially frustrating when the rest of the laptop's design is so good.

A buyer shopping for a 17-inch laptop is usually looking for a system for the home or office where it'll stay and not make the trek back and forth between those two locations with any great frequency. The LG Gram 17 is unique in that it weighs just over 3 pounds -- light enough for daily commutes without giving its owner a sore shoulder. And with an Nvidia RTX GPU, it holds some appeal to on-the-go content creators. Or students who might want to engage in some casual gaming. Just know you sacrifice some of the solid feel you would get with an admittedly heavier aluminum chassis for the increased portability.

Who is the LG Gram 17 for? Photo editors, professional graphic designers and illustrators seeking a rival-beating display. Compared to similar competitors on the market, the LG Gram 17's display is more color accurate. Pitted against the MacBook Pro, the LG Gram covers more of the DCI-P3 color space. And unlike the MacBook Pro, you won't be stuck in dongle hell. It has a perfect mix of legacy and modern ports for your productivity needs. It excels across other areas, too, including power efficiency, graphics performance, and audio quality. Apple and Lenovo better watch out! LG’s making a name for itself in the laptop space, and it’s gunning for the beloved MacBook Pro and the Yoga 9i.

When we reviewed the 17-inch Gram in 2022 it cost $1,799.99—this year's model is $200 more. That isn't excessive considering the switch to discrete graphics (though the RTX 3050 is on the low side among current Nvidia GPUs) but, like the Gram Pro 17's weight surpassing 3 pounds, it makes the system a bit less appealing. We're also unimpressed by the keyboard and unnerved by the screen's wobbling and bowing. Still, the Gram Pro 17 has a lot in its favor. If you set out to buy one of the biggest- and brightest-screened desktop replacement laptops, you'd probably not expect such feathery weight or long battery life. That makes the LG a pleasant surprise if not quite a repeat Editors' Choice winner.
