Despite all its promises, the LG G8 ThinkQ’s audio performance leaves much to be desired. The Crystal Sound OLED technology, while certainly making it very hard for the speakers to be occluded by the user’s hand, produces a canny overall timbre with almost absent bass, lack of impact, and numerous artifacts. The noise-cancelling algorithm, albeit extremely efficient, also comes with its share of unfortunate consequences. To top it all, the HD Audio app records only mono files.

The bloatware is stupid. The gimmicks are dumb. They clog up an otherwise wonderful device. The cameras are fine. They take nice photos and you’ll be happy with your Instagram feed. The screen is great, the battery is fab and the processor is decent. The LG G8 thinQ is a good phone. It’s a really nice phone actually. If you’re willing to spend 20 minutes on set up taking off all the stupid stuff and ignoring the silly gimmicks you’ll be happy. You’re looking at a price point of anything from R8000 to R10 000. I think it is well priced and if you’re an Android fan you’ll be happy. Bejeweled is also the best time waster on the planet and everyone should download it.

I’ve seen a lot of hate for the G8 and demonizing on the internet with people wondering why LG even tries anymore. Why? Because they make damn good phones. They make the best alternative to those who don’t like what’s out there from Samsung and Google here in the US. A lot of people don’t know whether to trust OnePlus or not since its a relatively new name. LG is safe. LG makes a really good phone with some compelling features that won’t frustrate you for the next couple of years. Unless you want fast software updates.

The LG G8 ThinQ’s camera is a competent rather than a stellar performer. It does most things reasonably well without really excelling or failing dramatically in any area. It produces colors that are attractive, if not always accurate, and its stills AF system is fast and effective. It also usually handles exposures well, underexposing only occasionally and even taking backlight situations in its stride unless the zoom is in use. Its video output is similarly pleasing in many situations, but the best results require a static shooting position and constant subject distance. The inconsistent bokeh performance is a little disappointing and not up to the standard of the current leader in this area (the Huawei P30 Pro). However, if you take a few shots and don’t intend to magnify the image, chances are that there will be a satisfactory image available.

In the end, did the G8 deliver on the basics? In some regards, yes, while in others the G8 is still very much a compromise of a phone. LG has improved a lot on the camera and speakers. On the display side of things, the G8 is an improvement on paper but in practice it fails short. Battery life has improved in some regards, but if you tend to use your phone a lot in higher brightness levels the G8 will seem like a downgrade.

Unfortunately, it's not all sunshine and roses. The Crystal Sound OLED panel's sound quality isn't the best we've seen. The 3D ToF-enabled features, except for the excellent portrait selfies and the Face Unlock, feels downright gimmicky. The Hand ID works really slow and it's unreliable, the Air Motion gestures need more work. And it's really hard to see any proper use case for those at all. It will be cool to show off to some friends but you will end up using the fingerprint reader, the Face Unlock and resort to tapping instead of waving with your hands when it comes to simple tasks like changing a track, capturing a screenshot and turning up the volume. Some kind of competitive fast charging tech would have been much more appreciated.

Die G-Reihe war lange Zeit LGs Antwort auf die Samsung Galaxy S Reihe. Allerdings waren die Verkaufszahlen in den vergangenen Jahren wesentlich niedriger als die der S-Reihe. Das G8 soll dies nun ändern. Der ThinQ-Name wurde der G- und V-Reihe zugefügt, um auf die KI-Fähigkeiten und die Leistung anzuspielen. Diesmal bietet das G8 einige interessante Funktionen, z.B. “Hand-ID”, mit der man das Smartphone entsperren kann, ohne es zu berühren. LG behauptet, das G8 ThinQ lese das Blut in den Adern der Handfläche, um das Gerät zu entsperren. Mit Gesten der Handfläche kann man zudem die Musikwiedergabe steuern, Anrufe beantworten, Alarme stumm stellen, und sogar einige Elemente der Benutzeroberfläche bewegen - alles ohne den Bildschirm zu berühren. Man könnte meinen, diese Funktionen seien ein Gimmick und keine nützliche Funktion des Smartphones, schließlich wurde es schon auf anderen Geräten, wie etwa dem Samsung Galaxy S4, getestet. Es war bereits damals nicht sehr sinnvoll und ist es jetzt wahrscheinlich auch nicht.

Hinter dieser Funktion verbirgt sich ansonsten ein gutes Smartphone. Die Dünne von 8,4 mm passt zu einem Flaggschiff, ebenso das Design mit nur Glas auf der Vorder- und Rückseite des Gerätes. Auf der Vorderseite befindet sich der 6,1-Zoll-OLED-Bildschirm mit einer Auflösung von 1440 x 3120 Pixel, also einer Pixeldichte von 564 ppi. Er unterstützt HDR10 und Dolby-Vision. Dieser Bildschirm ist zurzeit einer der besten, in der selben Liga wie das Galaxy S10 oder das OnePlus 7. Die Sensoren befinden sich unter einer recht großen Notch. Die Unterkante ist jedoch klein, wodurch das Smartphone fast nur aus dem Bildschirm zu bestehen scheint (Bildschirm-zu-Gehäuse-Verhältnis von 83,5%).

Das Gerät wird mit LG UX 8.0 verschickt, das auf Android 9.0 (Pie) basiert. Für Leistung sorgt ein Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 achtkern Prozessor, wie bei den meisten Flaggschiffen heutzutage. Mit dabei sind außerdem 6 GB RAM und 128 GB interner Speicherplatz, der mit einer Mikro-SD-Karte um bis zu 1 TB erweitert werden kann. Dieses Smartphone kommt folglich mit allen komplexen Anwendungen und Spielen mit intensiver Grafik zurecht. Für Bilder steht ein dreifaches Kamera-Setup bereit, mit einer gewöhnlichen 12-MP-Linse mit OIS, einer ultra-breiten 16-MP-Linse, und einer 12-MP-Telefotolinse mit OIS. Es kann Videos in 4K-Auflösung aufnehmen, die unglaublich aussehen, aber dennoch vom iPhone Xs übertroffen werden. Auf der Vorderseite sitzt ein doppeltes Kamera-Setup für Selfies: eine 8-MP-Kamera und eine Time-of-Light-3D-Kamera.

Der Lautsprecher bietet recht gute Klangqualität. Der obere Lautsprecher ohne Löcher funktioniert mittels Vibrationen, die über Glas weitergeleitet werden. Es ist ein interessanter Ansatz, beim Klang merkt man keinen Unterschied zu gewöhnlichen Lautsprechern. Darüber hinaus stehen Bluetooth 5.0, NFC und FM-Radio zur Verfügung. Das Smartphone ist mit einem 3500-mAh-Akku ausgerüstet, der über den USB-3.1-Typ-C-Anschluss 21-W-Schnelladen unterstützt. Das LG G8 ThinQ ist in vier Farben erhältlich, nämlich Grau, Schwarz, Blau, und Rot. Da der Preis dem des Samsung Galaxy S10 sehr nahe kommt, kann man das G8 ThinQ schwer empfehlen. Insgesamt ist es ein tolles Smartphone, doch es sticht in keiner Kategorie hervor.

SD 855: High-End SoC (System on a Chip) für Smartphones welcher Ende 2018 vorgestellt wurde. Integriert unter anderen einen schnellen "Prime Core" mit bis zu 2,84 GHz und drei weitere schnelle Cortex-A76 basierende Performance-Kerne. Zum Stromsparen wurden außerdem 4 weitere ARM Cortex-A55 Kerne verbaut. Man sollte nicht stark fehlsichtig sein und man wird wenig Details am Bildschirm sehen und nur eine kleine Auflösung zur Verfügung haben. 74.1%: Diese Bewertung ist schlecht. Locker drei Viertel der Modelle werden besser beurteilt. Das ist eher keine Kaufempfehlung. Auch wenn Verbalbewertungen in diesem Bereich gar nicht so schlecht klingen ("genügend" oder "befriedigend"), meist sind es Euphemismen, die eine Klassifikation als unterdurchschnittliches Notebook verschleiern.
