Bei den Freunden, also den Zusatzmodulen, liegt die Entscheidung dann bei jedem selbst, ob es sich lohnt, zwischen 100 und knapp 300 Euro mehr zu investieren, um das Smartphone entsprechend zu spezialisieren.

Inzwischen ist mit dem LG G5 Dual-SIM eine ansonsten technisch identische Variante des LG Flaggschiffs G5 erschienen. Es bietet alle Vorteile der Single-SIM Variante, vor allem die sehr gute Verarbeitung, viel Power und das neuartige Erweiterungsmodul hin. Im Dual-SIM Test liefert das neue Topmodell eine sehr gute Leistung, wobei die Vorteile des Modul-Slots bislang eher theoretisch sind.

Das LG G5 zeigt sich als brauchbare Alternative zu den chinesischen Modellen von Xiaomi und LeEco. Zwar ist das Handy rund 150€ deutlich teurer, dafür kann man das G5 jedoch in Deutschland kaufen und genießt deutschen Service und Garantie. Das LG G5 wirkt in punkto Design zwar weniger edel als die Konkurrenz aus China. Diesen Nachteil gleicht allerdings der wechselbare Akku aus.

Ach, was war ich neugierig auf das LG G5. Und nun, nach dem Test, bin ich durchaus überzeugt: Das Smartphone-Flaggschiff punktet in nahezu jeder technischen Hinsicht. Das Fotografieren mit den zwei Kameramodulen im LG G5 macht wirklich Spaß. Leider gab es im Testzeitraum kein Klassentreffen und keine Familienzusammenkunft, denn dort hätte das LG G5 bei Gruppenfotos so richtig punkten können. Die Bildqualität ist bei allen Fotos gut bis sehr gut, und dabei habe ich den manuellen Kamera-Modus der App noch überhaupt nicht ausprobiert, nur die Automatik benutzt.

And not just us, either – I personally have come across a few people recently who were using the G5 without mods. Many people find LG’s G5 as a risky attempt because of its striking changes from last year’s model. Undoubtedly, there is something charming about this design and additional modules. We can’t be sure though how customers will receive these novelties. There is no doubt that the fans of smartphone photography will be happy to find the camera module, bringing hardware buttons and extra battery, in the box. Actually, it seems to us that namely these aspects (camera and battery) could have been a bit better. The improvement in battery life is very subtle, but this is compensated by the quick charging thanks to the USB Type-C port and QuickCharge 3.0 technology. We can’t say it’s bad, but we expected better image quality from the 16MP camera, especially in lowlight conditions. What compensates this part is the presence of a second wide angle camera that allows you to capture appealing snapshots.

In the past, I’ve championed devices with removable batteries, rightly and for the obvious reasons. I’ve also championed modular phones, for example the Fairphone 2, despite all its caveats. And I absolutely recognise that every form factor, every design involves some compromises. For example, needing a peel-off-back, as on the Galaxy S5. Or slide-off-screen, in the Fairphone’s case! And, in a better designed world, LG could have made the G5’s bottom section work. But trying to butt up (no pun intended!) two hard, metal sections, repeatably, with no wear, no tolerance problems causing steps and edges and sharp points, was always going to be nigh-on impossible. That’s why plastic was invented, LG, have one of the halves be an obviously different material and texture so that the user’s fingers are expecting discontinuities. Heck, have the bottom bit coated in leather, as on the G4!

UI flaws aside, there's no denying that the G5 is an incredibly ambitious device from LG, and it's by far the most unique smartphone I've ever tested. Initially, I had my doubts over whether departing from the G4's handsome leather looks was a wise move, but the G5's surprisingly attractive when you get up close, and its smooth metallic coating feels great in the hand. The grey model I had for review might not look quite as shiny or flashy as either of Samsung's handsets, but at least the G5's matt finish means it doesn't pick up any dirty fingerprints, which is a welcome relief after the grubby Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge.

We won’t give our final verdict until we’ve thoroughly tested the HTC 10. However, it’s clear each phone has its advantages. The dual camera setup is brilliant, offering impressive flexibility, while performance is up there with the best. This is also one of the few phones out there to offer a removeable battery, to keep you going on those super-long journeys.

The LG G5 is a really good phone, overall, just not the best phone at the moment. LG is introducing some interesting ideas with it, like modules and dual cameras, but the module status at the moment is pretty weak and uninteresting, while the dual camera setup creates some new use cases at the sacrifice of an appealing design. Maybe in a year LG will dial all of that in, improve the camera design or setup, and offer modules that more of us can get behind.

We think the two phones have room to cohabitate. The LG G5 holds some of the same promise that Google's Project Ara does. This, however, depends on LG and its partners actually producing interesting add-ons. Even without that the phone is great on its own, its seamless metal shell is quite impressive in person. The Samsung Galaxy S7 edge is more self-sufficient. Sure, some snap-on accessories are available, but this is good ol' Samsung - the S7 has everything and the kitchen sink (and even the sink has more features than the competition). If you're looking for low-light photography, the S7 edge is the phone for you.

It’s safe to say I’m impressed with the LG G5. The metal body is a step up and LG has managed a design feat at which other manufacturers have failed – retaining a removable battery and microSD slot in a phone that feels high-end. The modules I’ve seen so far are niche but they add something to the LG G5 that no other phone can lay claim to. Will they take off? I’m not entirely sold yet – we’ll have to wait and see. Regardless, it’s admirable that LG is trying something truly original.

Modell: Das einzigartige LG G5 ist ein gut verarbeitetes Smartphone, welches durch den User mit Hilfe von Modulen angepasst werden kann. Es gibt verschiedene Module, die von LG "Friends" genannt werden. Diese reichen von einem externen Lautsprechersystem bis zu einer Ausrüstung mit physikalischem Auslöser. Dritthersteller sollen noch viel mehr Module in Arbeit haben. Das Design hat sich verglichen mit früheren G-Serien-Geräten radikal verändert. Die Kanten sind stark abgerundet und das Bildschirmglas ist an der Oberseite leicht gerundet. Es gibt einen Fingerabdruckleser an der Rückseite. Weiters kann man zwischen vier Farben wählen: silber, titan, gold und pink. Der 5.3 Zoll große IPS-LCD-Bildschirm wird durch Corning Gorilla Glass 4 geschützt.

Das Android-6.0.1-Marshmallow-System verfügt über die LG Optimus UX 5.0 Benutzeroberfläche und den Always-on-Display. Es gibt zwei Varianten des Geräts. Das Flagschiff-Gerät ist mit einem Snapdragon 820 Prozessor, 4 GB RAM, eine Adreno 530 GPU und 32 GB internen Speicher ausgestattet. Das LG G5 bietet ein Dual-Kamera-System mit 16 MP plus 8 MP an der Rückseite und eine 8-MP-Frontkamera. Weitere Features umfassen Bluetooth 4.2, A-GPS, USB Type-C und FM-Radio. Das LG G5 wird Usern, die ihr Smartphone gerne auf Hardware-Level konfigurieren, gefallen.

Qualcomm Adreno 530: Grafikchip für Smartphones und Tablets, integriert im Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC.

Einige nicht anspruchsvolle aktuelle Spiele können mit geringen Details noch flüssig gespielt werden. Für Office und Video natürlich ausreichende Leistungsreserven.
