Huawei Mate 50 Pro does what few modern smartphones can do: it offers another innovation in mobile photography. Variable aperture in the f/1.4-f/4.0 range is something that has not been there yet. Also, the photos are wrong. They would try to be different at this price!

We don’t want to be dramatic, the Huawei Mate 50 Pro is fine, it does a good enough job, but at this price point, “fine” and “good enough” just simply don’t cut the mustard. While we understand the reason 5G is absent here, we can’t simply ignore its omission and wave it off. The chipset’s performance is fine, but again, newer phones in the same price point are going to out run the Mate 50 Pro. The battery, charging, display and camera are impressive, but there are many other manufacturers who can match that performance without the downsides Huawei brings with it. All of this means that Huawei’s latest flagship is not worth the R24 999 price tag. It’s a shame that the US upended Huawei the way it did, but until this handset, it felt as if the firm was trying its best to make do with the cards it had been dealt. The Mate 50 Pro, however, is lacking in too many areas to warrant a recommendation. We simply can’t recommend this handset and would instead point readers to our review of the latest Samsung Galaxy S23

The Huawei Mate 50 Pro’s overall battery score was average. The phone’s autonomy was poor, delivering just over a day and half of power when used moderately. The Mate 50 Pro was also quite power hungry at night, when at activity is generally low, losing on average 4% per night. The device’s battery also would just collapse when reaching 3%. When testing use cases individually and outdoors, the Mate 50 Pro’s autonomy was below average for all use cases, except gaming, where the results were above average. The Mate 50 Pro’s charging experience was excellent. The 66W wired charger took only 46 minutes to fill up the 4700 mAh battery. Similarly, the wireless stand took 1 hour and 26 minutes to fully charge the battery, which was much faster than average. The residual consumption levels of the wired charger and of the wireless charger when the device was unplugged were above average. The device’s efficiency results varied a bit depending on the charging method. The wireless charge efficiency was excellent, but wired efficiency was average. The Mate 50 Pro’s discharge currents were high overall, meaning that the device is not well optimized, except for gaming. When compared with devices from the Ultra-Premium price range ($800+), the Huawei Mate 50 Pro is just below average. Its autonomy, as well as its efficiency score were below average. But it showed excellent results in terms of charge, placing it among the best charging performances of its segment.

The Huawei Mate 50 Pro’s display provides an overall good user experience. The screen’s excellent color fidelity, which earned the device a top score in color, makes looking at pictures particularly pleasant in indoor conditions. However, compared with other products of its segment, when outdoors, the display lacks brightness under sunlight, which affects the readability of the screen. The device’s display is free of flicker, which makes viewing the screen easy on the eyes. However, when watching HDR10 video content, the lack of details in the darkest shades, along with the multiple, but imperceptible frame drops, detract from an otherwise satisfying experience.

Also, the smartphone impresses with its autonomy and fast charging. At the same time, the performance of the smartphone is not lost at all as the most modern processor and a well-thought-out system make Mate 50 Pro a really cool device for both ordinary and hardcore users. The only things that may raise some questions are the high price and the specific design of the camera unit. And if the first is not a disadvantage, but just a statement of the fact that you have to pay for the whole premium set, the second is just a matter of taste, on the third day of use I got used to the appearance of this orange handsome fellow. Huawei Mate 50 Pro is an extraordinary smartphone. Its futuristic design may seem controversial, but its functionality is definitely admirable! This smartphone boasts one of the best displays on the market today, which additionally wins bonus points for its rounded shape, which improves the ergonomics of the smartphone and creates an infinity display effect. In terms of mobile photography, Huawei Mate 50 Pro is not only one of the best, but perhaps really the best smartphone you can find today. The only things that may raise some questions are the high price and the specific design of the camera unit.

If camera performance is one of your main considerations when buying a phone, then you can’t go wrong with the Huawei Mate 50 Pro. It’s no wonder why it sits atop the smartphone camera rankings at DXOMARK. Plus, it’s an impressive and handsome piece of hardware with a long list of premium features. Shame about the lack of Google Mobile Services and 5G, but if you’re good with the offered workaround (GBox) and 4G speeds, are a die-hard fan of Huawei’s Mate series, and you can afford the P58,899 (black/silver) or P68,899 (orange) price tag, then by all means go for it.

The Huawei Mate 50 Pro is a good smartphone for audio playback, delivering a pleasant sound signature and overall experience, with good tonal balance as well as good dynamics, spatial and volume performances. The smartphone also offered some nifty features as well in the recording area, including audio zoom and a very effective background noise reduction. However, the Mate 50 Pro did not quite perform at the same level as in playback, lacking consistency between use cases.

The Huawei Mate 50 Pro is an all-rounder flagship phone that won’t disappoint in any section. You will obtain lots of interesting features, including a beautiful display experience, powerful performance, optimized battery life, and compelling camera result. Though it might not have the best video recording features, still, you can purchase this phone if you are looking for something out of the box. On the other hand, it’s our duty to provide alternative options as well so that you can make a good purchase. Therefore, we will recommend you check out Samsung Galaxy S22+ if you are in search of well-rounded specs and features. Aside from this, you can also check out Apple iPhone 13 for better video recording results.

The Huawei Mate 50 Pro has the potential to be one of the best phones of the year, and it packs incredible camera hardware with beautiful software and a powerful chipset into one absolute beast. However, none of that really matters if you can't use this phone every day. I certainly can, but regular consumers may not be able to or may not even be interested in doing so. I love the Huawei Mate 50 Pro, but that's simply a tall ask. Huawei has made a heavy-hitter here, but just like the P50 Pro before it, the company's best is going to be hard to get across the line for regular consumers when considering the software situation. This is the best phone that Huawei has ever made, and it's a shame that plenty of people will never get to experience it.

With a DXOMARK Selfie score of 145, the Huawei Mate 50 Pro reaches the No. 1 spot in our front camera ranking. Except for the device’s fixed-focus front camera, the Mate 50 Pro comes with most of the same hardware specifications as the Huawei P50 Pro. Despite the hardware similarities, the Mate 50 Pro’s performance was an improvement over the P50 Pro thanks to new software solutions and refined tuning, For video, the Mate 50 Pro was tested at 4K resolution at 30 frames per second, with Vivid HDR mode enabled. Vivid HDR is a new HDR video format and currently supported by a range of phones and TVs. In our tests the Mate 50 Pro delivered a very consistent still image performance, achieving top scores in several test categories, including exposure, focus, noise and flash. This said, overall the Huawei Mate 50 Pro video results were good but not outstanding, mainly due to slightly low contrast levels and a low light performance that left some room for improvement.

The Huawei Mate 50 Pro is a beautifully made smartphone with an amazing camera but the most frustrating Android software on the market. If you genuinely don’t need Google apps and services – or don’t want to have a phone connected to them – then it’s one of the best picks out there. But it’s not just access to Google apps that the Mate 50 Pro misses out on. Without access to many apps in the official app store, you’ll have to sideload some of the most popular apps out there, and accept that a few won’t work at all. As incredibly good as the cameras are on the phone, I don’t think they are worth the pain of using the rest of the device. Huawei is determined to push on without Google but it’s very hard to recommend you go along for the ride.

The Huawei Mate 50 Pro is not for everyone, of course. Not a single phone out there is, basically. It does have a lot of positives, but there are also some negatives to consider. We’ve listed both at the beginning of the review, but we also wanted to double down here. Just to help you make a purchasing decision, basically. I’ll highlight who this phone’s for, basically, via the bulleted list below.

There aren’t many cons to be pointed out, except maybe the steep price but nowadays expensive smartphones are all the rage. Yes, the lack of Google Services is a thing, and it’s listed in the cons section alongside the 4G connectivity. Parting ways with everything Google and stepping into a whole new ecosystem is a tough decision. We’re pretty sure the Huawei Mate 50 Pro will get the praise it deserves in reviews and comparisons but sadly this won’t translate to sales figures. But it is what it is, and if this phone pushes the competition to new heights, it would’ve served its purpose.

If you’re the type of person that wants the best camera on a phone, you shouldn’t look any further than the Huawei Mate 50 Pro that we featured in our review for the Philippines. The phone produces incredible photos no matter the lighting condition, and its variable aperture tech really is a game changer if you’re the sort of person that really puts camera performance above everything else. It’s also one of the prettiest and most striking phones I’ve used so far, and the only one that I dare to daily drive without a case.

On hardware alone, the Huawei Mate 50 Pro deserves a five star score. It has a premium build, rapid performance and a stellar screen, while delivering some of the best cameras you’ll find on any smartphone right now. But once you take software into account, it’s at an unfortunate disadvantage here in the UK. It costs the same as other premium flagships, but is forced to go without Google services and 5G connectivity. That may not be a dealbreaker for tinkerers and Android fans willing to get their hands dirty, but will send less determined shoppers towards Samsung, Sony and the like. In Huawei’s home turf, where the lack of Google isn’t a big deal, the Mate 50 Pro is the perfect rival to the Xiaomi 12S Ultra and its oversized camera sensor. But everywhere else, you’ll have to decide if the extra software faff is worth the trade-off for stunning snaps.

Yet we all know that there's a big BUT to the whole thing. It's not that Google Mobile Services and 5G connectivity are impossible to live without. Huawei's AppGallery and alternative app repositories have gone a long way in the past few years, while 5G is yet to really become a game changer for most of our daily lives. The real issue is that when you are paying a lot of money for a flagship you can live with it not being at the top of every chart, but it needs to be thereabout. And the Huawei Mate 50 Pro has a few glaring omissions on its scoresheet so it will always be at a big disadvantage when the final results are out. Huawei being the black sheep of the smartphone market means the Mate 50 Pro doesn't stand a chance of selling millions of units in Europe. Some users willing to steer away from Google will be glad that it's available, but most will just ignore it. But it's a lovely phone and another proof that Huawei's well of innovation is far from drying. If nothing else it will serve as a well-design publicity stunt that will increase user confidence in the company's other products - wearables, TWS earphones and laptops, which are far better positioned to become best-sellers.

With a DXOMARK Camera score of 149, the Huawei Mate 50 Pro is the new No. 1 in our smartphone camera ranking. It also achieved the best Photo score to date, thanks to excellent results in the exposure, focus, and texture/noise categories. The autofocus score benefited a lot from the new and innovative adjustable aperture, which allows for the optimization of the depth of field in a scene. An adjustable aperture is especially useful, for example, in group portraits. As smartphone image sensors have become bigger, the effect has been a reduced depth of field, which makes it more difficult to keep all subjects in focus if they are not in the same focus plane. The Huawei system uses an embedded diaphragm that allows for adjustment from f/1.4 to f/4.0, so, depending on the scene, the camera can either prioritize light capture (in low light), maximize depth of field, or pick a more balanced setting between the two extremes. We last saw a similar feature on the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 series with its duo aperture, but it’s still quite uncommon, and the Samsung feature does not lead to the same results.

The Huawei Mate 50 Pro was announced in September 2022, and the expected price of this phone would be $1262 (Rs 102,990 in India) approx. As for the primary specs, let’s start with the display that renders a big 6.74 inches OLED panel with 1B colors, 120Hz refresh rate support, and Huawei Kunlun glass protection. Under the hood, it is powered by the 4nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ 4G Gen 1 processor and comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB to 512GB of internal storage. The phone runs on the EMUI 13 OS for the international variant and HarmonyOS 3.0 OS for the china variant. For the next level of photography and videography, there is a triple rear camera setup with a 50MP main, 13MP ultrawide, and a 64MP periscope telephoto lens with 3.5x optical zoom support. With this setup, you can record 4K videos at 60fps from both side cameras. On the front side, you get a dual selfie camera including a 13MP ultrawide and a TOF 3D lens. The Mate 50 Pro packs a Li-Po 4700mAh battery with support for 66W fast charging, 50W fast wireless charging, and 5W reverse wireless charging support.

The Huawei Mate 50 Pro has significant improvements over the Mate 40 Pro with its higher refresh rate, better chipset, improved cameras, and bigger battery life. However, the Mate 40 Pro that launched in the Philippines has 5G, which the newer Mate 50 Pro doesn’t. We’d hold on to the older model if 5G is a huge requirement, otherwise, upgrading to the Mate 50 Pro is still worth it. You’ll enjoy better performance, the best cameras in a smartphone, and longer battery life.
