Ach, was bin ich doch manchmal für ein oberflächlicher Mensch, denn eigentlich fand ich das Huawei Mate10 Pro von Anfang an toll, weil es so cool und anders aussieht. Und das bewirkt doch so gesehen nur der Kontraststreifen auf der Rückseite. Bei näherer Betrachtung muss ich allerdings feststellen, dass das Huawei-Phone wirklich viele Stärken mitbringt. So sind Verarbeitung und Materialwahl rundum top, das randarme Display überzeugt mit Helligkeit, Farben und Details und auch im Hintergrund passt technisch nahezu alles. Eine gute Kamera und die stattliche Akkuleistung runden das Bild ab.

Nach dem ausführlichen Test des Mate 10 Pro fällt auf, dass die Software an einigen Stellen noch nicht ganz fertig ist. Allerdings hat uns das Huawei auch bei der Herausgabe des Testgeräts so kommuniziert. Als ich die Präsentation vor Ort gesehen habe dachte ich erst: Ein Launcher drauf (ich bin kein Fan von EMUI) und es ist vielleicht das beste Android-Flaggschiff. Die Akkulaufzeit wird gut sein und die Kamera vielleicht nicht auf Pixel 2-Niveau, aber auch sehr gut. Wenn da nicht diese zwei Kritikpunkte dazu gekommen wären, welche den Gesamteindruck für ein so teures Modell leider recht stark trüben.

A true flagship in every sense of the word, we really love what Huawei does in the Mate 10 Pro. A few quibbles aside, it's probably one of the best devices we've ever tested. The hardware is on par with anything we've used, but the software left us feeling a little bitter.

I have seen the Mate 10 Pro hover around the $700(or less) mark on Amazon lately as well if that helps. It’s a powerhouse of a smartphone and has most of the bells and whistles you need minus a couple of omissions. I think the $650-700 range is the sweet spot for the Mate 10 Pro.

At $650 the Huawei Mate 10 Pro is more affordable than flagships like the Galaxy Note 8 and S9+ while coming close in some aspects of performance. Unfortunately, the pricing is awkward for the US unlocked market, wedged between more affordable midrange phones like the Motorola Moto X4 and G5 Plus, which can work with any US carrier, and Huawei's own Honor View 10, which has the same Kirin 970 processor and AI features for a lower price. There's also the rumored OnePlus 6 to consider, which could cost around the same as the Mate 10 Pro while offering the very latest hardware.

Some of the Mate 10 Pro’s “headline” features still feel like gimmicks: the NPU is under-utilized, and frankly the phone would be better were EMUI left off altogether. Now it is time to round up this review. I think it is safe to say that what we have here is one of the best Android phones on the market. That statement does come with some provisos though. Huawei do need to fix the two major bugs that I have encountered and then this phone would be near perfect. They also need to do a bit more work on the EMUI Desktop interface as it is not quite up there with the offerings of Samsung in the form of DEX. I think it is fair to compare this against the likes of the Galaxy S8 and Note 8 in terms of the performance and usability, and if you are looking for a phone that is a tad cheaper than the Note 8 then this is a very good option. If however you feel that that the S-Pen is something that would be beneficial to you then it would be worth checking the Note 8 out. For me though, I don’t need the S-Pen and I love the dual camera setup on this phone so that is where my money would be going.

On a final thought, last week at GTC Europe, NVIDIA's keynote mentioned an understated yet interesting feature where using AI could help improve it. Ray tracing, to provide realistic scene interpretation over polygon modeling, is usually a very computationally intensive task, however the benefit is an extreme payoff in visual fidelity. What NVIDIA showed was AI assisted ray-tracing: predicting the colors of nearby pixels based on the information already computed and then updating as more computation was performed. While true ray-tracing for interactive video (and video games) might still be a far-away wish, AI-assisted ray tracing looked like an obvious way to accelerate the problem. Could this be something applied to smartphones? If there is dedicated AI hardware, such as the NPU, it could be a good fit to enable better user experiences.

Modell: Vieles spricht für das Huawei Mate 10 Pro. Außer einem raffinierten, erstklassigen Design bietet es einen lebendigen Bildschirm mit OLED-Technologie und einem Seitenverhältnis von 18:9, der jenem im Google Pixel 2 XL und iPhone X ähnelt. Huaweis Mate 10 Pro verfügt zudem über eine etwas andere Dual-Kamera-Lösung. An der Rückseite des Mate 10 Pro befinden sich zwei Kameras, ein 12-MP-Farbsensor (RGB) mit optischer Bildstabilisierung (OIS) sowie ein 20-MP-Schwarz-Weiß-Sensor (Monochrome) ohne OIS. Mit f/1.6-Blende über beide Kameras zeichnet sich die Mate-10-Serie mit der breitesten Blende unter allen Dual-Kamera-Smartphones aus. Man kann also mit ausgezeichneter Leistung unter schlechten Lichtbedingungen rechnen. Vergleicht man seine Spezifikation mit der Flagship-Konkurrenz gewinnt das Huawei Mate 10 Pro in einigen Schlüsselbereichen. Es bietet mehr Speicher, nämlich 128 GB gegenüber 64 GB, die bei anderen Flagships üblich sind. Zudem ist es mit einem kräftigeren Akku als die Konkurrenz ausgestattet. Es verfügt über einen riesigen 4.000-mAh-Akku, während das Samsung Galaxy Note 8 nur mit einem 3,300-mAh-Akku und das iPhone 8 Plus nur mit einem 2.691-mAh-Akku ausgestattet ist. Damit erreicht es eine ausgezeichnete Screen-On-Time. Sogar mit gelegentlichen Gaming, Filmschauen, Hotspot- und GPS-Verwendung hält das Phone spielend einen guten Tag durch.

Als Nostalgie-Wert verfügt das Mate 10 Pro sogar über einen IR-Blaster. Damit kann es auch als Fernbedienung eines Fernsehers fungieren, falls man Freunde im Gasthaus erschrecken möchte oder einfach nur die eigene Fernbedienung nicht auffinden kann. Am Mate 10 Pro ist Android 8, also Googles jüngstes Betriebssystem vorinstalliert. Daher stehen Usern die neuesten Sicherheitsupdates und Highlights der Benutzerschnittstelle, beispielsweise Bild-in-Bild-Anzeige und Benachrichtigungsanzeige zur Verfügung. Auch bei diesem Phone fehlen Kopfhörerbuchse und MicroSD-Kartenslot. Nutzer benötigen daher für ihre kabelgebundenen Kopfhörer einen Dongle. Dagegen sollte der interne Speicher für die Lebenszeit dieses Phones reichen. Obwohl das Phone eine Rückseite aus Glas hat, unterstützt es Wireless-Charging nicht. Trotzdem sorgt die gekrümmte Gorilla-Glas-Rückseite in Kombination mit einem Metallrahmen für ein elegant aussehendes Phone, das sich satt anfühlt und gegenüber anderen Phones dieser Preisklasse nicht enttäuscht. Das Gesamtdesign des Huawei Mate 10 Pro ist minimal und schön. Käufer können zwischen den Farben Mocha Brown, Midnight Blue und Titanium Gray wählen. Die Vorderseite ist stark bildschirmlastig. Das Phone bietet einen 6-Zoll-Bildschirm bei kleinerer Grundfläche als das 5,5 Zoll große iPhone 8 Plus. Das Bildschirm-zu-Gehäuse-Verhältnis von 80,9 % beeindruckt verglichen mit dem klassischen iPhone 8 und 8 Plus Designs. Allerdings gehört der Bildschirm mit 1.080 x 2.160 Pixeln nicht zu den schärfsten Modellen. Mit dieser Auflösung reiht er sich hinter den kristallklaren 2K- und sogar 4K-Bildschirmen von Konkurrenz-Phones wie dem Sony Xperia XZ Premium ein. Die Kombination von OLED-Technologie und HDR10-Unterstützung verleiht dem Bildschirm des Mate 10 Pro Kraft und Attraktivität. Während das Mate 10 nur eine hübschere Version des P10 Plus ist, ist das Mate 10 Pro ein völlig neues Gerät. Sogar das Design ist anders als beim Mate 10. Es handelt sich um ein ernstzunehmendes Gerät von Huawei, welches mit dem Samsung Note 8 und dem LG V30 konkurrieren möchte.
