The Magic V3 has its drawbacks; the X Fold3 Pro has better battery life, and I like the fact that Vivo somehow managed to slot in two in-screen sensors, instead of the side-mounted fingerprint reader that's standard on every other device in this segment. Vivo also has an edge when it comes to the cameras, with the auxiliary lenses in particular delivering fabulous shots. That said, the Magic V3 does a great job in its own right, and it has one of the best camera packages in this category — it outshines the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Pixel 9 Pro Fold by a considerable margin. The Magic V3 also has the brightest OLED panel of any foldable, and Honor leads the pack when it comes to eye-friendly tech.

To me, the most exciting smartphones continue to be those that change their shape depending on what you want to do with them – and Honor continues to be one of the most exciting brands in that foldable space. The Honor Magic V3 (and, to a lesser extent, its clamshell cousin the Magic V Flip) is the ultimate embodiment of its manufacturer’s mission to make phones that seem impossible. For the V3 that means a book-type foldable slim enough to shame the competition; for the V Flip it means a cover screen that got huge before that became table stakes; and for both it means cameras that surprise (and software that does not).

Yes, if you can afford it and want a foldable that feels a lot like a single-screen phone when not opened. You’re also betting that the upcoming AI features and tighter Google collaboration could make Android work better on the Magic V3.

Competitors like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 and Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold start from S$2,548 and S$2,399 for much less storage while touting the same chipset underneath the screen. While great phones themselves and offering better software and AI smarts, these alternatives didn't innovate as boldly as Magic V3's physical properties, which is crucial if foldable phones want to be taken seriously for the mainstream audiences and not just the 'power users' who need the real estate. The same also applies to the phone's value proposition while still offering everything you could possibly ask for in a leading phone.

Foldable phones offer so many benefits over bar phones and the only real disadvantage, apart from the cost, is the extra bulk and weight. But Honor has largely eliminated this with the Magic V3 by making it so thin and light. For photographers and content creators it’s hard not to be seduced by the ability to view and edit your shots on a tablet sized screen, to use the cover screen as a preview monitor for your subject, to shoot selfies with the main 50MP camera, and to be able to open it to 90 degrees so that it stands up on its own in either orientation without the need for a tripod. It’s no wonder that the foldables sector is such a fast-growing one.

The Honor Magic V3 is a foldable smartphone that is clearly aggressively priced to take on Samsung’s own Z Fold6. At RM6,999, it is a phone that offers almost the world in terms of functionality and usability. Almost. MagicOS is far more user-friendly than I remember, and it is great to see that Honor has taken some considerable strides in making it feel more fluid on the Magic V3. Ultimately, there is a greater degree of functionality that you can only find on this foldable. And once again, the integration of Gemini AI feels more wholesome. But the key selling point of the Magic V3 beyond a shadow of a doubt, though, is just how unrealistically thin Honor has managed to make this foldable, so much so that it’s only slightly thicker than the average non-foldable, candy bar smartphone.

Despite its imperfections and slip-ups with regards to a few minute details, the Honor Magic V3 is ahead of the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 when it comes to feeling like a regular everyday phone when it's closed. Its lightweight, high-capacity battery, faster charging speeds and superior cameras across the full range give it an edge that makes it well worth considering. While aspects of the software fall behind the competition, the granular control it offers compensates for the inherent quirks that foldable phones come with regarding app support. There are also thoughtful, meaningful software improvements over the Magic V2.

Tradeshows are, and will continue to be this combination of the mess I like to avoid, and yet the kind of mess that makes you and I the nerds that we are. It's about as tiring as it is fun, and probably the best example of it is IFA, which I will refuse to call out in German because, well, I speak none. It's been 100 years of a tradeshow that's mostly famous for home appliances today, but which was known before by being inaugurated once by Albert Einstein, and because later it became Samsung's launch pad for years of Galaxy Notes and Wearables. It's hard for me to deny how much I love Berlin, how much I loved this year's show, and also the products that caught my eye most.

The slender build makes for a good headline but like clowns in a tiny car, there’s a surprising amount of quality features smushed into the Honor Magic V3’s svelte frame. Performance and battery life, while not quite on par with Samsung, are still very good for a foldable, and the cameras are versatile and effective. The displays are also both wonderful panels, with the external display in particular standing out – if you kept this phone folded and only used that screen, it would still be one of the best phones around.I still think the lack of optimisation for the full-screen format is a downside to foldables in general and MagicOS continues to mildly confound me but even with these issues in play, the Honor Magic V3 is a seriously impressive piece of kit.

The Honor Magic V3’s overall display performance was strong within our foldables category but was slightly behind its predecessor, the Magic V2, due to lower results in readability and color. The flicker-free screen’s strongest attribute was readability, with results that were on par with its closest competitors in indoor conditions. But the V3’s readability diminished considerably in outdoor use cases, particularly in sunlight. Luminance levels didn’t quite match those of the V2 in bright sunlight, and in high brightness mode, the device reached a peak luminance of 720 cd/m², compared to the V2’s 950 cd/m².

HONOR has done it yet again as the HONOR Magic V3 isn’t just a great foldable smartphone, it’s the best one in 2024 for sure. Sure, it has its quirks but considering that some of them can be remedied via software updates, the overall package is the most attractive one yet. The only reason why you wouldn’t get this foldable is if you’re loyal to a particular brand, not a fan of foldables, not a fan of Android, and / or the RM6,999 retail price is too heavy to bear.

Honor’s Magic V3 is undoubtedly a premium foldable phone and the super thin design means it has to be considered up there with the very best. It’s also very well priced, though cuts to other phones in the market mean you’ll need to make a conscious decision to choose it versus what else is around. I wasn’t expecting such a step up from the Magic V2 though – and that’s the real bonus, Honor has clearly decided it needs to try and outpace the competition, though it does need to do more to improve the multitasking in MagicOS.

Speaking of selling, the device costs £1,699 or €1,999, which works out to around $3,000 CAD. That puts the Honor Magic V3 a fair bit higher than the Z Fold 6 at $2,564, which has half as much storage in the starting model (256GB in the Fodl 6 to 512GB in the Magic). We’re in talks with Honor to get a review device, but until then, these are my thoughts on the Magic V3.

The Honor Magic V3 is an impressive triumph in engineering and performance, blending the current world’s slimmest and lightest foldable chassis with an excellent camera along with the might of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor. It also packs good battery life and a bevy of Google Cloud AI-enhanced capabilities though its implementation of AI still needs a bit more polish. That minor quibble aside does not detract from the fact that this is one of the best foldables of 2024.

I've been using the Honor Magic V3 everyday for the past six weeks. I first purchased my own China unit for use for three weeks, and then the last three weeks I've been using this global version. And I absolutely love this phone's in-hand feel, and excellent homescreen UI. I'm blown away by how light and thin this phone is.

Honor clearly knows what it's doing with foldables, and although the Magic V2 launched a year ago, it continues to be among the thinnest and lightest devices around. The ultra-thin design is a major differentiator, and it is the main reason why I used the Magic V2 more than just about any other foldable in 2024 — it doesn't feel cumbersome in the least. Honor is putting all the learnings from the Magic V2 toward its latest foldable, the Magic V3. The foldable retains the best features of its predecessor, but it is thinner and lighter, and that makes it even better to hold and use. Coming in at just 9.3mm folded and an incredible 4.4mm unfolded, the Magic V3 is unbelievably thin.

It’s important to note that we are writing this review before we know the price of the Magic V3. HONOR typically will not disclose the price until it is announced. Not giving it to press early with other embargo material. But we do know that it is priced at CNY9,999 in China for this particular storage size. That translates to around $1,403 USD or €1258 in Euro. So we’re expecting around €1300 in Europe. Which is far cheaper than a lot of the competitor devices we get further West. But regardless of price, this is still an incredible foldable to pick up. HONOR has continued to check just about every box for foldables lately.

The Magic V3 is easy to like, particularly for those who have been continually annoyed by the Samsung Z Folds' brick-like form factor (thick and narrow). Indeed, one of the Magic's major selling points is that you can forget it's a foldable and treat it like a regular bar phone, but still have the convenience of the large screen always in your pocket. The Magic has a class-leading cover display to help make the above case. The internal one, while not the brightest, has little to be ashamed of either. It doesn't hurt that Honor has gone to great lengths to ensure that everything is well protected, too.

At the end of the day, the Honor Magic V3 managed to complete its mission. It beats the Galaxy Z Fold 6 by a hair (0.2 in our rating system). There are arguments to be made in favor of both phones, but if you want the thinnest foldable on the market (at the moment), you should try and get the Honor Magic V3. We say "try" because availability is always a problem (as this thing is not officially sold in the US), but when there's a will, there's a way. The Magic V3 improves on every single area compared to its predecessor and finally achieves the foldable wet dream—it really feels like a normal phone when folded. More importantly, it can compete not only against other foldables, but also against conventional bar phones of a more rigid nature.

This is an absolute cracker of a phone, and Honor have very nearly knocked it out of the park with this one. Unfortunately, and as is often the case, the few snags are essentially software related. The random factory reset really dented my faith in the device, and as outstanding as many of the Magic V3's features are, reliability is the main thing you need from a device you rely so heavily on. The issue may be rare, and it's definitely something Honor could patch. As far as hardware goes, this is one of the best folders on the market at the moment. Honor's very smooth and rapidly growing ecosystem also adds to the appeal, even if signing up is a bit clunky for United States-based customers.

However, I still can’t recommend this as a viable alternative to other foldables on the market simply because the software and battery life wreck my enjoyment of using it. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 ($1899.99 at Samsung) is the most obvious competitor, and it has far wider availability, a resoundingly better Android experience, a longer software upgrade commitment, and demonstrably better AI-based features in the Galaxy AI portfolio. Meanwhile, the just-launched Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold ($1799 at Amazon) comes with what many would consider to be the best Android skin, the incredible Pixel Camera experience, way better AI, and deep integration with the wider Google ecosystem.

If you’re looking for the absolute best book-style foldable hardware out there and are willing to pay for it, yes. For basically everyone else, no. Price remains the big sticking point, while Honor’s take on Android feels cluttered and confusing at times, despite some useful AI features. However, you shouldn’t ignore the Magic V3’s strengths, of which there are plenty. The stunning thin and light design deserves lots of plaudits, while both displays and some cameras are a joy to use. You can also expect solid battery life, impressive fast charging and flagship-level performance, despite a slight drop-off on the internal screen. The Magic V3 remains too niche and expensive a device for most people to consider, but Honor has achieved something very special on the hardware side.

The Honor Magic V3 is a great smartphone, and an excellent foldable device. The software experience isn't entirely to my taste, but I recognize that that's a matter of personal preference -- in any case, the device is silky smooth in operation. There's growing competition from others like Google and OnePlus, but the sheer thinness of the Magic V3 has me preferring it over those other devices while out and about. It's £1,699 (roughly $2,237) price tag isn't cheap, but for the price you're getting an exemplary foldable phone experience.

I've fallen for the Honor Magic V3 in a way that I didn't for previous Honor foldables, despite their overall quality. This is a seriously good foldable, which makes it even worse that it's not available in the U.S. The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which prioritizes usability and design polish in a similar way to the Magic V3, is the closest equivalent to the Honor foldable for American buyers. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 and its AI and stylus support could also appeal to users who want a pocketable productivity machine, even if the hardware's getting a bit stale. The OnePlus Open, despite being a year old, remains a better foldable overall thanks to its aggressive pricing, strong design and ingenious approach to multitasking.

When it comes to foldable hardware, Honor has a significant lead with the Magic V3. Last year’s Magic V2 was already thinner and lighter than all the 2024 foldables we’ve seen so far, but the Magic V3 takes that even further. It really does feel like a regular smartphone when folded, and it makes all the difference to everyday use. Despite its svelte dimensions, the Magic V3 boosts durability with improved screen protection and water resistance, and even manages to pack in a 5150mAh battery that’s larger than any other foldable right now. That, combined with the performant-yet-efficient Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 means the phone can last all day, with around seven hours of screen-on time before needing a top-up. The cameras are also pretty good for a foldable.

We don’t have a confirmed price or release date for the Honor Magic V3 just yet, so we’ll need to wait and see how it compares to the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, which has gone up in price once again this year. The Magic V2 was priced at £1,699, coming in between the ultra-pricey Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Google Pixel Fold (both £1,749 at launch) and the more affordable OnePlus Open (£1,599), so I expect that we’ll see the Magic V3 aiming for a similar position: not matching OnePlus on price but still undercutting the big players. And honestly, simply avoiding a price increase could be enough to give the Honor Magic V3 a distinct advantage this year. The slim build is a magic trick that no other brand has been able to replicate, the camera specs are massively improved over last year and missing elements from the V2 like water resistance and wireless charging are rectified here.

The Honor Magic V3 is the new thinnest and lightest foldable phone around, measuring 9.3mm when folded and weighing 230g. It basically feels like the iPhone 15 Pro Max when folded, but with rounder curvier edges. There's a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, and two gorgeous screens, and a capable triple lens camera system too. I got the phone from Trinity Electronics in Hong Kong, which can ship worldwide.

The Honor Magic V3 is the world's thinnest foldable phone, at just over 9mm when folded up. This bendy blower has officially launched in China but should go global in 2024 too, boasting upgraded camera tech and SD 8 Gen 3 smarts. Here's the Honor Magic V3 goss, and check out my review of the V2 here on Tech Spurt! I'm also testing the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, more on that soon. Somehow this third version is even skinnier than the wafer-thin Gen 2 model. We've got a bigger battery despite the size decrease, while the Honor Magic V3 also packs in Qualcomm's latest flagship platform. So gaming should be a breeze. The camera is a triple lens setup; this folding phone should be good for snapping everyday photos, if the V2 is anything to go by.
