Positiv stechen der USB-C-Anschluss und auch die Kamera heraus, die gute bis sehr gute Bilder liefert. Auch die Unterstützung vieler LTE-Bänder inklusive des 700- und 900-MHz-Bandes ist eine unauffällige Eigenschaft, die aber von aufmerksamem Mitdenken zeugt.

Viele Kritiker gehen mit dem neuen HTC U Ultra hart ins Gericht. HTC hat einen schweren Stand im Kampf um Marktanteile bei den Android-Telefonen. Die Marke versucht zwar innovativ zu sein, leistet sich aber auch immer wieder Aussetzer. Trotzdem hat das U Ultra mit aufregender Optik und zweitem Screen durchaus seinen Reiz.

Alles in allem liefert HTC mit dem U Ultra einen edlen und leistungsfähigen Wegbegleiter, der aufgrund seiner Größe jedoch wohl in kaum eine Hosentasche passen wird. Mit der Rechenleistung kann es kein anderer Androide aufnehmen, das Zweit-Display ist recht praktisch, der Speicherplatz mit 51,9 Gigabyte netto ausreichend bemessen.

Ein Fazit mag ich nach dem ersten Eindruck der kommenden Modelle noch gar nicht so richtig ziehen. Ganz zu schweigen, dass man das nach ein paar Stunden mit den Smartphones sowieso nicht kann. Ich bleibe aber dabei: HTC wird es mit dem U Play und U Ultra im Einzelhandel wegen den Preisen verdammt schwer haben.

Eine klare Meinung konnten wir uns vom Gehäuse machen. HTC ist es eigenen Angaben zufolge nach zwei Jahren Forschung gelungen, Glas unter großer Hitze und hohem Druck zu biegen. Daraus resultiert eine innovative rückseitige Abdeckung, deren gläsernen Enden sich über die Kante schwingen. Das Glas wird übrigens durch die spezielle Behandlung sehr widerstandsfähig.

HTC has their own UI overlay that they apply on their phones dubbed SenseUI. But where other manufacturers add unnecessary features and bloatware with their UI, HTC does the complete opposite: they removed bloatware when they saw that Google was doing a better job. The company also added Sense Companion, a supposedly AI-driven virtual assistant that that means to offer suggestions based on your habits. If it does work, we won’t see anything yet since we’ve literally started using the phone just today, so we’ll have to see in the next few days if it really works.

The HTC U Ultra is a missed opportunity. The display is decent in terms of colour performance, but is less brighter than other flagships. Overall performance falls short when it comes to battery life, and even overall performance is comparatively lower than present generation flagships. The U Sonic app is good, but the U Ultra loses out majorly because of the USB-C adapter. The front camera is good, but the rear camera is noticeably poorer than the likes of Google Pixel and Apple iPhone 7 Plus. Numerous scratches and fingerprints do give you an insurance policy, but that is not very convenient. The HTC U Ultra is not a practical recommendation over other flagships, all of which makes it a missed opportunity.

The camera is decent and while the Snapdragon 821 processor may not be the latest and greatest, the phone's performance was never an issue. It all comes down to the price and size of the device. The U Ultra has a solid screen, excellent voice and data performance, and solid battery life. The new BoomSound speakers sound very good, as do the boxed headphones. Android 7 and HTC's Sense interface run perfectly on the phone and ensure you can personalize nearly every facet of the phone. The camera is great. Then there are the "buts": The phone is huge, making it somewhat unwieldy. The extra display is nice, but the phone would probably be smaller (and possible more appealing) without it. The U Ultra lacks a headphone jack, and I found the USB port was incompatible with several USB-C-to-3.5mm dongles I have on hand. And, in what may be the ultimate dealbreaker, the U Ultra is barely water resistant, let alone waterproof.

Modell: HTCs Versuch ein Phone herzustellen, das größer als ein herkömmliches Flagschip ist, ergab das HTC U Ultra. Ein 5,7-Zoll-Bildschirm mag groß sein, doch in Flagships wird er schön langsam zur Norm. Die Schlagzeile ist das Dual-Screen-Design des U Ultra. Zusätzlich zum QHD 5,7-Zoll-Display gibt es einen 2,05-Zoll-Bildschirm, der sich neben der Frontkamera befindet. Der kleinere Bildschirm löst mit 160 x 1.040 Pixeln auf und zeigt eine Reihe von Apps an. Es ähnelt jenem von LGs V Flagschip-Serie. Es ist nützlich, dass der kleinere Bildschirm Informationen anzeigt, ohne dass ein User in seinen Tätigkeiten am Hauptbildschirm unterbrochen wird. Optional können Benachrichtigungen für Wetter, Musik, Kontakte und Kalender dargestellt werden. Er kann auch so konfiguriert werden, dass er Shortcuts zu den am meisten verwendeten Apps anzeigt. Zum Beispiel macht die Integration von Spotify die Music-App nützlich, wenn der User oft durch Tracks blättern will. Ein weiteres Highlight des U Ultra ist ein neues KI-Merkmal namens HTC Sense Companion (HSC). Dabei handelt es sich um einen persönlichen Begleiter der ständig vom User und den Dingen, die dieser alltäglich erledigt, lernt. Es kann dem User vorschlagen sind wärmer anzuziehen oder etwas früher zur Arbeit aufzubrechen, wenn Schnee vorhergesagt ist, den User erinnern auf längere Reisen eine Powerbank mitzunehmen und sogar ein Restaurant empfehlen, wenn der User einen Wochenendausflug macht und gegebenenfalls Plätze reservieren. Das HTC U Ultra verfügt über ein mutiges Design mit Glas-Rückseite. HTC nennt dies ‘Liqud-Surface’-Design. Es kombiniert Glas und Metall und kann sowohl als ein einziger Farbblock als auch Perlmutt erscheinen - je nachdem wie das Licht spielt. Die Rückseite des Phones ist subtil gebogen und lässt sich angenehm in der Hand halten. Allerdings ist das U Ultra breiter als das Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge oder andere Phablets. User mit kleinen Händen werden also Probleme haben es zu halten. Das HTC U Ultra ist in schwarz, weiß, blau und rosa erhältlich.

Das U Ultra nutzt einen 5,7 Zoll großen Super LCD5 Bildschirm mit QHD-Auflösung. Dank einer Pixeldichte von 513 PPI liefert es kristallklare Bilder. Außerdem ist die Helligkeit des U Ultra großartig und die Blickwinkel sind genauso gut. Für eine einzigartige Note hat HTC am U Ultra Android 7 Nougat mit seiner eigenen Sense UI, eine einfache Schnittstelle, auf der alles einfach zu finden ist, installiert. Im Inneren des HTC U Ultra arbeitet mit dem Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 Prozessor ein Spitzenmodell, das mit 4 GB RAM kombiniert ist. In puncto Speicherausstattung gibt es 64 GB und 128 GB Varianten. Trotz HTCs Software bleiben dem User bei der 64-GB-Variante noch 53 GB GB für Medien und Apps. In puncto Kameras liefert das HTC U Ultra eine 12-MP-Kamera an der Rückseite und eine 16-MP-Frontkamera. Es verfügt über einen Modus namens Zoe. Dieser nimmt gleichzeitig mit ihrem Foto ein drei Sekunden langes Video auf und funktioniert auf ähnliche Weise Live Photos auf den neuesten iPhone Modellen. Dies ermöglicht es dem User, kurze interaktive Video-Clips zu erstellen. Die 16-MP Front-Kamera kann Full-HD-Videos aufnehmen und verfügt über einen Auto-HDR-Modus. Das HTC U Ultra ist ein würdiges Flagship von HTC, doch wie viele andere Flagships könnte es nicht mit den kommende Flagships von 2017 mithalten können.
