The Pixel 7a earns my recommendation, but not without some massive caveats that weren't present in previous A-series devices. Google might impress me with its camera results and its software experience, but none of that matters if a phone can't survive to bedtime. I didn't enjoy revisiting the battery anxiety that plagued smartphones of the 2010s, and I wouldn't want anyone else to experience that feeling, either. Resetting my device seemed to help, and in that case, I'm pleading with anyone buying this phone to go through with a clean install, no matter how much additional time it takes. I don't think this is a solution so much as a bandage, and I'll be closely watching the battery performance of future Pixel devices, including this summer's Pixel Fold.

The Google Pixel 7a may be powerful and it may be smart, but if it can’t last me through a full day I won't be recommending it as one of the best phones you can buy. The power of the Google Tensor G2 chipset, which can erase tall buildings from your photos with a couple of taps, may be too much for the tiny battery, and the phone’s sluggish charging only makes things worse. Battery life is more important than whatever performance benefits you might get from Google’s powerful processor, which can handle the best games and most advanced apps with no trouble. Play those games for your entire train ride to work, though, and you better have a charger waiting at your desk – and you also better have a couple hours to spare before you need a full battery again. With blazing speed that drains the battery in no time, the Pixel 7a is like a European roadster.

Google once again proves that you don’t need to spend big money to get an excellent smartphone, and whilst it’s a shame this phone isn’t the same RRP as the Pixel 6a was, the slight increase in price seems well worth it. The Pixel 7a gives you two rear cameras that perform very well. The main camera gives a higher resolution final image than many other phones, a great ultra-wide-angle camera, and a much-improved selfie camera. That the selfie camera offers 4K video recording is impressive – especially since some smartphones that cost double the price do not. There’s even a good level of close-up performance from this phone, and even without a dedicated macro mode, we were impressed by the results it offered; close-up photos showed plenty of detail.

The Pixel 7a is a fantastic option if you want a more premium “midrange” phone; truly, the software drives the Pixel lineup. Features like the Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, fast security updates, and a stock Android experience are the main selling points of a Pixel phone, and to get almost the same Pixel 7 experience at S$250 less? That’s not too bad at all. Moreover, the newer Pixel 8 phones are priced steeper than the Pixel 7 series. And while Pixel 8 is commendable for what it delivers, the higher price makes the Pixel 7a a reasonable priced-down version of what's core for anyone looking out for a Google Pixel phone.

The Pixel 7A feels like the best value for Pixel fans right now. While you miss out on certain Pixel 7 extras, like battery share, the camera's Action Pan mode, a larger screen and slightly faster charging, none of those omissions feels like a deal-breaker. In my experience, camera performance is comparable between the two -- certainly enough to satisfy the average person. With the Pixel 7A, it's clear Google is leaning into competitive pricing as a major part of its effort to bring more Android users into the world of Pixel. My only concern is that Google may be blurring the line a bit too much between its A-series Pixel and regular Pixel. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad Google brought most of the features I asked for to the Pixel 7A. It just means I'll be expecting more from the Pixel 8.

Wireless charging, a better camera, a more capable chipset and a faster display make the Pixel 7a one of the best mid-range phones. It’s not entirely perfect, but I haven’t been as happy with a phone under £500/$500 for a while. There was a lot of talk ahead of the release about how the price increase would lead to a far less tempting proposition. I think it’s in fact the opposite – the improvements and additions make this a far more complete and tempting proposition than the Pixel 6a. Yes, you can find phones at a similar price with better screens or snappier chips – however none of them manage an experience quite as complete as this.

The Google Pixel 7a offered a very good performance in our DXOMARK front-camera test, with results close to the higher-tier Google Pixel 7. The good Photo score was based on the excellent exposure and vivid color rendering. Skin tones were rendered nicely across all skin types and light conditions. Our experts also liked the depth estimation in bokeh mode but noticed some noise and a loss of fine detail in low light. The Pixel 7a also did very well in video mode, thanks to a wide dynamic range, as well as generally accurate white balance and skin tones. Video stabilization was excellent, too, effectively counteracting hand motion and stabilizing the subject’s face in the frame. On the downside, our testers noticed a lack of detail in low-light recordings, as well occasional high levels of video noise.

It wouldn't be a Pixel without a killer camera, and the new Pixel 7a delivers. Keep in mind, there's no full-resolution mode for the camera, so the 64MP resolution is largely academic. We can say the images this phone produces are crisp, evenly exposed, color-accurate, and bright enough in all types of lighting. The old 12MP sensor was still fine for casual snapshots, but the 64MP upgrade gives you a little more resolution for zooming. There's no telephoto lens on this phone—you have to go all the way up to the Pixel 7 Pro to get that. We also like that a phone this affordable gets the same high-end Tensor G2 processor as Google's other Pixel phones. We've found this and other Pixel phones to be buttery smooth and a pleasure to use, but in terms of raw processing power, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is a better chip. That might matter if you're playing mobile games all day and demand the best performance, but for everyone else, the Pixel 7a is all the phone you'll likely need (and then some).

The Pixel 7a is a great option for those who would like a pixel without forking out nearly $1000 for a flagship device. Granted there are some compromises, with the battery and a little with the camera, the Pixel 7a does offer some great features at a bargain price. I also like that it runs Android 13 with Material you which is just super intuitive and much easier to use thanks to its butter smoothness. I can easily recommend the Pixel 7a for those that want a great camera phone and a great experience overall. The Pixel 7a is available from the Google store and major retailers such as JB Hi-Fi, Officeworks, Optus and Catch websites and instore and comes in the following colours – sea, charcoal and snow – for $749.

The Google Pixel 7a’s battery struggled to keep up in our battery tests, resulting in a low global score that was just slightly higher than its predecessor, the Pixel 6a. While the Pixel 7a’s upgraded Tensor chip but slightly smaller battery did not help the device’s autonomy, its efficiency score was a big improvement over the 6a, leading to a better global score. When used moderately, the Google Pixel 7a provided a bit more than 2 days of autonomy, which is below average in our database. The device showed very high consumption during calls and music streaming, but the autonomy when streaming videos and gaming was decent. With a very small 18W wired charger, the battery’s charging time was quite long, taking 2 hours and 8 minutes to replenish the battery.

There’s no doubt in my mind that the Pixel 7a is Google’s most polished, most complete mid-range offering to date. It pairs a form factor that melts comfortably into one hand with a Tensor G2 processor that’s so smart I didn’t want to put it down (at least until it got too hot). Google even introduced tangible upgrades like a 64MP primary camera, 90Hz refresh rate, and wireless charging — all three firsts for the Pixel A series. It’s up to its ears in features that make life more convenient, and yet I’m not sure that the Pixel 7a goes far enough. Where Google’s previous $449 price point was good enough to paper over some of its cracks, the Pixel 7a now demands a full $500, sitting just a Benjamin shy of the flagship-tier Pixel 7.

The Pixel 7a delivered a decent performance in our DXOMARK Audio tests, with playback results that were in many ways very similar to the Pixel 6a, and recording results very close to the flagship device Pixel 7 Pro. The overall score is slightly lower than on the predecessor Pixel 6a, though. In playback we found the Pixel 7a to be most suited for watching movies and listening to music. Sound was punchy, but the sound signature with the built-in speakers was slightly thin and resonant, which isn’t great for gaming. Recording results were best when shooting video with the main camera app in landscape orientation, with bright recordings that were nice to listen to. Front-camera sound was nice as well but offered a narrower sound scene, while the default memo app is limited to mono recordings only.

At its price point of Rs. 43999 there's a lot going for the Google Pixel 7a. You get a crisp 6.1-inch FHD OLED display, fast and efficient Tensor G2 SoC, and pair of great cameras. While there are underlying issues such as the phone getting warm and call drops, it isn't enough to break the pleasing Pixel experience which you get, thanks to the Pixel UI. You can grab this phone from Google for £449 in the UK, right now. So overall, if you look at everything this phone has got, I think Google should have priced it more aggressively, rather than gradually decreasing the price. And yeah, you should definitely play a waiting game if you want to get the best value out of the Pixel 7A. However, if you can’t wait, I still believe last year’s Pixel 6A is still a fantastic phone that offers a very similar experience to the 7A! That phone is available at as low as INR 27,000, which for me is a steal considering its cameras are almost as good as the 7A.

The last few Pixel A-series phones, including the Pixel 5a and the Pixel 6a, made a convincing argument for not spending big to upgrade your old handset. By bringing fresher design and superior hardware to go with a cutting-edge Android experience, the Pixel 7a is the best in its class. If you want your next phone to cost below $500, the Pixel 7a deserves a spot at the top of your shopping list. Samsung’s Galaxy A54 is the most formidable Pixel 7a alternative that comes to mind. It has a bigger and brighter screen with a higher refresh rate, but I’d take the Pixel for its superior wide camera and stock Android experience. If you are considering an iPhone, keep in mind that the most reasonably priced Pixel 7a alternative – a 3-year-old iPhone 12 with matching 128GB of storage — costs significantly more.

The Google Pixel 7a is a rarity. It’s a mid-range phone that performs above that spec in many areas, making it hard to pass especially when the price starts at $499. This puts the future of the A series into question because the line between the Pixel 7a and Pixel 7 blurs so much that the two devices are almost indistinguishable from one another. It’s $100 less to go with this phone, but even if you look beyond Google’s lineup, there are several reasons why this may be the best choice for those on a budget. Yes, even if you are thinking of upgrading from the Pixel 6a. Google plugged several feature gaps here, making this phone feel accomplished and complete as a more affordable option.

Offering top-notch performance along with stable software and services, the Google Pixel 7a has outdone itself in the mid-range category, delivering a camera experience that exceeds expectations. Although the device doesn't quite surpass the Nothing Phone (1) in terms of coolness, it excels in every other aspect when compared to other premium mid-range options on the market. At the start of this test, one thought constantly lingered: this is the phone for the cool kids. But it turned out to be much more than that. Anyone seeking an all-in-one device would be satisfied if they chose to invest in it. However, there is a substantial "but" here: Since the Pixel 7a is priced at $499, it's uncomfortably close to the flagship Pixel 7, which is $599.

So should you consider investing in the Pixel 7a? The answer really depends on how much you value the Google Android experience. For, that is where the Pixel 7a stands apart from other phones in its price segment – in its delivery of a smart, smooth, uncluttered Android experience with very good camera performance. And it delivers all this in a frame that is relatively compact by Android flagship standards. If you are a person who chases specs and benchmarks and sits with a stopwatch calculating load times and charging speeds, this is not the phone for you. The Pixel 7a is for those wanting citizenship in Google’s Tensor-Land, with the least budgetary tensions. Its A-rated predecessors may have cut corners and made significant compromises, but the Pixel 7a is the closest Google has come to a budget flagship since its Nexus days.

Let's not forget how the retail price of the Pixel 6a plummeted below the $600 mark within a few months after launch, with many fantastic offers going for far less. Even now, the Pixel 6a is priced well below the official price, so there's a chance if you're not shopping for a phone now, you could nab more pleasing offers for the Pixel 7a later in the year.

In the end, the Google Pixel 7a is undoubtedly the downgraded version of the Pixel 7 phone. You can also rely on powerful hardware so that you can reach the full potential of your phone without any problem. Not to forget, the device will render exceptional camera quality with appealing colors and contrast appears on the screen. Overall, the Pixel 7a is a complete package that will render everything that you will need. It got pretty good hardware and specs. But at the same time, you find some downsides such as slower charging speed and many more things. If you are looking for an alternative option you choose the Meizu 20 Infinity smartphone which comes with decent specs in the same price range.

The appeal of Pixel phones tends to be pretty niche, often not entirely well-founded in reason, and difficult to explain with just numbers and test results. It's somewhat of a similar story with the Pixel 7a here, as a quick look at the pros and cons lists below will show you. Google hasn't been quick to adopt a high refresh rate display on its 'midrange' model and even when it finally has, it's a 90Hz panel in a sea of higher RR competitors. Battery life is unremarkable, charging speed is downright unacceptable, the lack of storage options is limiting, and the Tensor G2 runs hot and throttles.

The Pixel 7a is, by almost all accounts, better than the Pixel 7 when it comes to picture and sound. It carries many of the features over from the 7, all while costing slightly less. Admittedly the main draw of saving money compared to the flagship model is slightly less alluring now that the regular 7 has seen some fairly hefty discounts in the US and UK, but it's hard to argue with the Pixel 7’s excellent value. If it were to exist in a world without the Sony Xperia 10 IV (and soon the Xperia 10 V) then we would recommend it without a second thought, but unfortunately for Google, the Sony is both cheaper and more cinematic. That’s not to say the Pixel 7a isn’t worth your time, as it is a compelling choice for those who want an excellent jack-of-all-trades Android smartphone that’s easy on the wallet.

The Pixel 7a is an excellent mid-range phone with features you see in Google’s high-end Pixel 7 Pro. Its camera can keep up with the big boys, the display finally meets the moment with its 90Hz refresh rate, the software brings the Pixel vibes, and the overall size will appeal to those of us who are sick of the massive phones that have flooded the market. There isn’t really anything to dislike about the Pixel 7a, I just wouldn’t buy one expecting it to hit most evenings with 50% battery life. For heavy users, this phone might need a charge mid-way through the day or at least before dinner to make it through the night. That’s really my only complaint, though. At $499, the Pixel 7a probably isn’t overpriced, but you should expect to pay less assuming Google runs all of the discounts it did for the 6a. We’ve already seen a first discount and the phone has been out for a week.

From the various upgrades the Google Pixel 7a has received, the selfie camera and reduced battery life seem to be the only main compromises. The Pixel 7a is finally on par with the competition thanks to the Tensor G2 SoC and comes with a clean Android 13 interface which cannot be matched at this price point. In more ways than one, it's definitely a worthy upgrade even for those using a Pixel 6a (Review). If you are looking for faster charging, then the OnePlus 11R 5G (Review) is a much better choice with better battery back up and 100W wired charging at your disposal, but it lacks wireless charging and an IP rating.

The Pixel 7a is a mixed bag of hits and misses. It delivers on the imaging and software experience, which are core features for the Google Pixel smartphones. However, thermal issues and weak on-battery time hampers the experience. That said, the Pixel 7a may seem to be a good deal on paper but the otherwise solid package does not deliver as good an experience in real life. Future software updates might make things better, but the Pixel 7a is not a good bargain in its current form.

Overall, the Pixel 7a is a more than a decent phone with very decent improvements over the Pixel 6a. Should you upgrade from last year's affordable Pixel? No. You shouldn't, just save your money. But if you're coming from an older Pixel, say, a Pixel 4a or a Pixel 5, the the Pixel 7a is a very, very, very lucrative and appealing offer. It brings the best of Google in a user-friendly and affordable package that makes. If you don't need some of the exclusive flagship features of the pricier Pixels, then this stock Android champ is certainly the phone to get. After all, it has it all, the AI/ML chops of the larger Pixels, a capable camera with many software features, a super compact size in comparison with your average Android phone, and finally, a $500 price tag that is very sensible.

The Google Pixel 7a is a good device for indoor use, providing proper readability along with very good color rendering and smoothness. Gamers will enjoy a good experience because of the new smartphone’s smooth, accurate and reactive display, as well as its fine control of aliasing. Although it achieves the same overall display score as the older Google Pixel 7, it arrives there in a different way. While it has significantly better results for color, and noticeable improvements in motion and touch, the Pixel 7a lags behind the Pixel 7 in readability, video, and management of artifacts. Outdoor viewing using default settings is hampered by the 7a’s lack of brightness in outdoor lighting conditions.

The Google Pixel 7a delivered an excellent performance for its class in our DXOMARK Camera tests, and showed some improvement over its predecessor the Pixel 6a. The Pixel 7a features less-sophisticated hardware than the Pixel 7 Pro and lacks a dedicated tele camera, like the Pixel 7, but it uses the same Google Tensor G2 chipset as the other Pixel 7-series devices. Overall, image results were pretty close to the Pixel 7, especially in the photo and zoom categories, but the 7a did not quite match the more expensive model in terms of video detail. In still imaging our testers were particularly pleased by the 7a’s color and skin tone rendering. When zooming, the 7a did well at the ultra-wide end of the zoom range, but the lack of a dedicated tele lens meant that tele zoom image detail wasn’t quite on the same level as some competitors, such as the Xiaomi 13.

Before I was introduced to the Pixel 7a, I had a completely different view of my surroundings. I would see tree-lined streets and walls painted with beautiful art but I never paid attention to all the buildings in Delhi which carry a lot of character and forgotten memories. It was not until I started capturing photos and seeing the beauty in ruins, that I began to see details in a whole new way. For me, the Pixel 7a isn’t just another phone with a camera; rather, it is a ‘smart’ camera embedded in a phone’s body. I use it every single day, and it’s incredible. There’s one problem… but I bet it may not mean much to you as an Android user. Here’s my review of a Pixel 7a.

From the software full of innovative Google tweaks that are hard to leave behind, to the camera reliability in various conditions to the handy extras like an IP rating and Qi charging this is a phone that’s about more than specs on a page.

The Google Pixel 6a was a tricky smartphone to write a conclusion on and while some improvements have been made to the Pixel 7a, it's still a difficult device to write a verdict on... It's a compact-ish smartphone that, on paper, has a great price and in real life, can capture brilliant photos. However, the battery is poor, there's no optical zoom and the all-singing Google Pixel 7 isn't that much more expensive. It's not that we don't like the Pixel 7a, as we do, it's just that a slightly lower price and a bit more juice would make it an even more competitive smartphone in what is a very busy market. For those who prefer a smartphone with a compact, modern design that is packed with great camera technology probably will take a good look at the Pixel 7a, though.

Comparing Google's Pixel 7a vs the Pixel 7 and Pro, to see which smartphone boasts the best camera tech, gaming experience etc for you. I've tested all three as my full-time phone, including the affordable Pixel 7a and that pricey 7 Pro. So here's my verdict on how they stack up and check out my unboxing and review of all three! The Google Pixel 7a costs just £449 in the UK and offers very similar specs to the Pixel 7. Performance is handled by the Tensor G2, with 8GB RAM, while the 90Hz OLED screen is another FHD panel with HDR10 support. However, the Pixel 7a sports a different camera sensor (IMX787) vs the 7 and 7 Pro, which use an Octa PD Quad Bayer setup instead. All the same, photo quality is similar until the lighting is more ambient, while Google's phones all deliver 4K 60FPS video recording. Gamers will enjoy a smooth (ish) frame rate on Genshin Impact, along with the Game Dashboard feature. It's stock Android 13 on all three smartphones, with years of OS and security updates lined up. Battery life is thankfully good on all three too. The Pixel 7a struggled for the first week, but since then it's been more dependable, with over six hours of screen on time per charge. The 7 and 7 Pro recharge faster however, with 30W tech.

The Pixel 7a is the best mid-range Android phone available. It squeezes even more of the premium smartphone experience into a smaller, cheaper model. Google’s top chip, plenty of RAM and a decent amount of storage, make it faster than most competitors. Its great, bright screen has a 90Hz refresh rate to keep things smooth when scrolling, which is a major perk of high-end phones alongside wireless charging. Great software and five years of support mean you can keep using it for longer. The camera is class leading and then some, beating many phones twice the price and totally trouncing the competition in the mid-range. The back is plastic not glass, though most will put it in a case anyway. The 34-hour battery is solid enough for a good day but short of the best. But the 7a is so good for the money, I’m not sure why you’d pay an extra £150 for the Pixel 7. In fact, the 7a’s biggest problem is that the Pixel 6a is still on sale from last year and is now reduced to £349, which is tremendous value.

The aforementioned (rumored) death of the Pixel A-series may turn out to be false. Sometimes people get it wrong. That’s fine. But if it is indeed true, Google’s latest and potentially last Pixel A-series phone is a very good one. The Pixel 7a gives you everything the Pixel 7 offered, just with a slightly smaller screen and US$100 shaved off the price. All of those fancy Tensor G2 AI features are here. Another excellent camera array (though not as excellent as the Pixel 7 Pro’s) is here. All-day battery life is here. And most importantly, it just works as you’d expect, with no performance problems to speak of in my time with the Pixel 7a. While it might be classified as a budget phone, the Google Pixel 7a goes much further than that. Admittedly the Tensor G2 is not a top-tier processor but Google has made it go the distance by optimising the software side to ensure a smooth user experience. Reviewing Google's Pixel 7a after one week, with an unboxing, camera test, gaming and early verdict on the battery life. The Google Pixel 7a is one of the best mid-range smartphones right now, boasting similar specs to the flagship Pixel 7 and another pleasing camera experience. It's a solid rival to the Samsung A54, Poco F5 and other phones of 2023 at this price point. Here in the UK, a Pixel 7a will cost you £449 - a rise vs the older 6a. However, you do get several upgrades for that cash, including Google's fresher Tensor G2 chipset for beefier performance. This smartphone can handle gaming on Genshin Impact etc, although it does still get rather warm at times. Likewise, the Google Pixel 7a offers a fresh 64MP camera which can capture great looking shots at day and even at night. It's not as strong in low light as the Pixel 7 but it's still commendable for a mid-range phone. Battery life so far hasn't been good, but seems to be improving after 5/6 days. I'll update on that side of things soon! And as for software, the Pixel 7a is stuffed with those excellent Google exclusive Android features. Plus, five years of guaranteed security updates.

The Google Pixel 7a embraces the strengths of previous Pixel phones and builds on them. It is, without a doubt, the best camera phone I’ve tested under ₹50,000. The upgraded 64 MP Sony IMX787 lens outputs superb results not only in daylight but also in indoor settings and low light. The software is as fluid and seamless as ever, however, only three years of OS updates bugs me since some competitors offer more. The Pixel 7a also performs well in most day-to-day tasks using its Tensor G2 chipset. However, heat management is not up to standard since the phone runs considerably warm at all times and it also throttles performance due to this.

Yes, you should buy the Pixel 7a and there are several reasons for it. This 5G phone is for those who want zero bloatware and a clutter-free Android experience, paired with some cool Google tricks. The camera is great and unmatchable in its price range. The general performance is smooth and software experience is also seamless. Don't forget, this one has IP67 water-resistant rating as well. The battery optimization is decent. Yes, you don't get support for the fastest charging speeds, but this is not a deal breaker. What might disappoint users is that Google doesn't ship a charger with the Pixel 7a. But, if we look at all the other factors, the Pixel 7a mostly checks all the boxes and looks like a great deal at Rs 43,999 -- or at Rs 39,999 if you can make use of the launch offers -- in India. In other words, the Pixel 7a gets a big thumbs up from the India Today Tech.

The Google Pixel 7a once again claims the title of the best budget phone and my pick for the best phone under $500. The OnePlus 11 is the only option below $1,000 that I think is worth considering over the Pixel 7a and that’s if gaming on your phone is one of your top uses. Google has struck a near-perfect balance with this hardware and combined with the consistent Android updates, unique Pixel software features, and the growing Google hardware ecosystem it is going to be difficult for me to get away from recommending the Pixel 7a this year. There are reasons to skip it. If you have to be in the Apple ecosystem, then by all means you need an iPhone. If you have to have a true optical telephoto zoom or high-end performance, then there are Android flagships that are a better choice for you. But for the majority of people, I think the Google Pixel 7a is likely to hold up as the best phone of 2023.

Plus, this is the first time that the Pixel A-series has wireless charging. Another option in the price range of the Pixel 7a is the Samsung Galaxy A54. For just $450, you’ll get a crisp 6.4-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, which already blows the Pixel 7a out of the water.

Based solely on my experiences with the phone, I can't really recommend the Pixel 7a to anyone at launch. Google might impress me with its camera results and its software experience, but none of that matters if a phone can't survive to bedtime. I've not enjoyed revisiting the battery anxiety that plagued smartphones of the 2010s, and I wouldn't want anyone else to experience that feeling either. That said, I'm aware — both from my decade of using Android phones and from communicating with others at AP using the Pixel 7a — that the level of battery drain I'm seeing appears to be an outlier, and it's something I'm actively working with Google to figure out. Even putting aside my terrible battery life, the sluggish performance, dated design, and the increased price all work against Google's latest smartphone, leaving me feeling cold towards a Pixel for the first time in years. With the company's lineup more expansive than ever, I'm just not sure what the A-series is doing to stand out anymore. That jaw-dropping price from previous generations might reappear in various sales over the next few months, but it's not here at launch. Without it, I'm left wondering if this device amounts to much more than a slightly worse Pixel 7 for slightly less money.

Google once again proves that you don’t need to spend big money to get an excellent smartphone, and whilst it’s a shame this phone isn’t the same RRP as the Pixel 6a was, the slight increase in price seems well worth it. The Pixel 7a gives you two rear cameras that perform very well, with a main camera that gives a higher resolution final image than many other phones, a great ultra-wide-angle camera, along with a much-improved selfie camera. The fact that the selfie camera offers 4K video recording, is impressive, especially since some smartphones that cost double the price don’t. There’s even a good level of close-up performance from the phone, and even though it doesn’t offer a dedicated macro mode, we were impressed by the results it offered, as close-up photos showed plenty of detail. Whilst you don’t get a pro or expert mode, you do get a whole host of useful photography features, including motion blur (for creative waterfall shots and more), night mode, magic eraser, plus portrait modes that make you look great. Sure, the phone is missing a dedicated telephoto camera, but if you just want the occasional 2x photo, then the Pixel 7a can produce decent results. At this price point, there’s no other phone I’d recommend, and therefore the Google Pixel 7a comes highly recommended.

It's hard to argue with Google's latest A-series Pixel. It completely eliminates the need for the smaller Pixel 7 as you'll find the camera is just as good and the battery life is identical. While it's got a slightly cheaper-feeling plastic back, you're probably going to keep it in a case, anyway. Google upgraded the camera over the Pixel 6a, representing the biggest camera upgrade — both hardware and in quality — of any A-series phone. Really, unless you need to regularly zoom in more than 5x, there's no reason to even spend the extra money to get the Pixel 7 Pro, either. The price-to-performance ratio of the 7a is without parallel and the 7a represents the absolute best deal you'll find in the Android world right now. I just wish the battery life were a little bit better because, if that were the case, this would be the perfect phone for the price.

This is a tough question for me. Typically, the a-series is always a must-recommend for me, when people ask what phone they should buy. But this year, that question is pretty tough. Why? Because the Pixel 7 exists. The Pixel 7 is only $100 more and it is usually on sale for $499, making it the same price as the Pixel 7a. And for $100 more, you’re getting better cameras, a better display, better battery life, and better charging, along with a few other things. Making that $100 jump well worth it. As much as I want to love the Pixel 7a, it’s hard to, because of the price increase. If it stayed at $449, I think this would have been a no-brainer for recommending. In the end, it is your decision, and you have to decide what features are worth it for you to buy it over a Pixel 7. And that could come down to the colors available, and if the retailer or carrier has stock available. The Pixel 7a is a really good phone, it just needs to be priced further away from the Pixel 7.

The Pixel 7a is a relatively compact, well-built phone with a high-quality display and a great set of cameras. The phone also has decent battery life and performance, along with a clean user interface that a lot of people appreciate. It also renders the more expensive Pixel 7 somewhat pointless. The phone isn't without its flaws, however. The chunky bezel and 90Hz refresh rate seem a bit outdated even in this price range. The charging is one of the slowest we have come across in recent times even by Pixel standards. And the Tensor G2 is just not a particularly good chip. Even taking all that into consideration, we still had a good time using the Pixel 7a. There is something very alluring about a relatively small, clean phone that isn't trying to be everything for everyone. It's simple, uncomplicated, and unpretentious. It's a phone you can recommend to people of all ages without specific needs and know they will be happy with it. To put things simply, the Pixel 7a is what we like to think of as the new default smartphone.

Overall, the Pixel 7a is an excellent value option with a few imperfections. Battery life remains a concern, even if it might improve with time, and the camera is good enough without matching the capabilities of the more expensive Pixel 7. And that’s ultimately the crux of the issue. If I were to go buy a smartphone today, I’d be hard-pressed to pick the Pixel 7 over the 7a (though if you already own a Pixel 7, it's not worth swapping the 7a). With the camera being the biggest differentiator between the phones, I think the question comes down to how much you care about pictures. Do you need a camera that’s good enough, or a camera that will excel? For me, the answer is good enough, and the Pixel 7a is that.

I’ve always appreciated that Google has never tried to do too much with its Pixel A phones. The Pixel 7a is a simple device that packs a nice screen that’s now even better thanks to a 90Hz refresh rate, solid performance and cameras that can hang with rivals twice its price. And now for 2023, you get handy upgrades like support for wireless charging, not to mention all the great existing Pixel-specific features like Hold For Me, Clear Calling and my personal favorite–the Pixel Recorder app. If you’re someone who needs to record conversations or interviews on the regular, I’d argue that app on its own is worth the price of a 7a. My two minor complaints are that while the 7a’s speakers are generally fine, they sound a bit shallow.

With zippy performance, a battery that can go all day between top ups, and a pair of cameras that take superb photos for the cash, the Google Pixel 7a once again proves an A-series is almost all the phone an Android fan needs. That it now looks and feels like a pricier device, thanks to nicer materials and a higher refresh rate screen, only highlights the exceptional value. It comfortably outmuscles direct rivals like the Samsung Galaxy A54, and takes better pics than the slightly more affordable Nothing Phone 1. A slightly larger screen, marginally faster charging and a few extra camera modes are now all that separate it from the pricier Pixel 7. That might be bad news for Google’s bottom line, but is fantastic for customers – even with the £50 price hike over last year’s effort. Unless you’re looking to spend almost double the cash on a flagship with even more versatile cameras, the Pixel 7a won’t leave you wanting for anything.

The Google Pixel 7a delivers the best A-series experience yet, with much-desired improvements like the 90Hz refresh rate display, wireless charging, and the company's latest Tensor G2 processor. That all contributes to its $499 price tag, snapping the A-series streak of $449 over the past two generations. For the new price, the Pixel 7a is in a very interesting position within the Google lineup. It's about $100 less than the still-relevant Pixel 7, which has a better camera system, larger display, and longer battery life, and is about $150 more than the still-available Pixel 6a, which provides a similar Android experience but without the fancier display and charging tech. If you can't decide between either end of that spectrum, then the 7a may just be the right phone for you.

There's plenty to like about the Google Pixel 7a, from the smarter Tensor G2 chipset and all the features it enables to welcome improvements to the display's brightness and refresh rate.I'm pleased to see the Pixel 7a buck the trend of recent Google phones and perform well on our battery test, even if it meant keeping the faster refresh rate disabled. While the higher megapixel rating on the Pixel 7a's main camera is also a welcome change, the camera phone's tendency toward darker colors makes the pictures more hit and miss than I would like to see. In the past, phones like the Pixel 6a were clearly better than midrange models like Samsung's older Galaxy A53. Now, when I compare the Pixel 7a's output to the Galaxy A54, it's almost too close to call.

The Google Pixel 7a is a solid piece of work. Google's created a smartphone that is as on-point as any Pixel they've made before. The value of this smartphone is at least as much as its retail price — pretty much what Google's "a" line of Pixel devices should aspire to be — when it comes down to it. If you're looking for the Google Pixel 7a to purchase, you'll find it online through the official Google Store for a price of $499 starting today. That includes "5 years of Pixel updates" — which is Google's way of saying it'll definitely have 5 years of security updates and "may also include feature drops and other software updates," too. In the past we've seen everything from fresh digital key functionality to improved voice-to-text arrive in these periodic updates.

Why start with complaints about the battery? Because it’s important. More important than taking great photos, which the Pixel 7a can manage ably, though it won’t win you any contests. Even with more megapixels on tap, many of the photos I took look very much like those from its predecessor, the Google Pixel 6a.

The Pixel 7a is a great offering in the mid-range offering performance that sits it in a competitive place. The biggest challenge that Google now faces is convincing you that this more expensive mid-ranger has the same appeal as the Pixel 6a. Although it's technically more advanced than the 6a, the move to over $/£400 immediately makes it look like it's slightly less attractive. Consider too, that discounts on the Pixel 7 mean that these two devices will often sit very close in terms of price. If that's the dilemma you're faced with, then pick the Pixel 7. It might be that potential customers want to wait for discounts before buying the Pixel 7a. But taken for what it is, you have great camera performance, plenty of power and decent battery life. The camera is good - accepting there's a problem switching from ultrawide to main camera that you need to watch out for - but otherwise, this is a great package.

Google's $499 Pixel 7a is the best midrange Android phone you can buy right now. It offers fantastic performance for the price, features above-average cameras, and includes software niceties not widely available on other Android phones. In this price range, Google's own $599 Pixel 7 is probably the 7a’s top competitor, but that extra $100 only gets you a slightly larger screen, faster charging, and an all-glass build. Sure, those are all nice perks, but none of them are definitive reasons you should choose the standard Pixel 7 over the 7a. Simply put, you won't find another $500 smartphone that offers as much bang for your buck, and that earns the Pixel 7a our Editors' Choice award.

Our expectations are that the Pixel 7a will be another smash-hit success on the mid-range market and will easily steal the crown over from the Pixel 6a and become one of the more sought-after Pixel phones available in 2023! After all, it seemingly has it all, the AI/ML chops of the larger Pixels, a promising camera (at least on paper), a super compact size in comparison with your average Android phone, and finally, the super-affordable sub-$500 price tag that could make it a bestseller. Definitely shaping up to be one of the phones with the best bang for the buck that will be available this year.
