In fact, the price weighs heavily in making this laptop a solid contender. Just remember that, while it looks good on the surface, the MC7803u makes some compromises that prevent it from properly delivering some of the entertainment you might have in mind (such as games). If you're willing to spend a little extra scratch to get a whole lot more oomph from an entertainment notebook, check out HP's HDX16 if you're inclined to splurge. Otherwise, Lenovo's IdeaPad Y510 is a little on the older--and less powerful--side, but still manages to bring some basic all-purpose entertainment to the party while costing under a grand.

Gateway's MC7803u is a very hefty system that is much larger and a good deal heavier than traditional 15.4-inch laptops. Having said that, the pricing of the system is very attractive for the features included with it. It may lack some items such as a FireWire port or slower DDR2 memory, but performance is decent and it has some very good graphics for those looking to run high definition video streams or casual 3D gaming.

The MC7803 may be a little too heavy, a little too big, and a little too cheap-looking to really fall in love with, but for $1,000, it offers respectable hardware and a decent feature set. If it weren’t for the screen’s atrocious lack of flexibility, we would recommend it as an affordable movie machine, but when you can’t even tilt the screen to face you directly in about fifty percentage of usage, it loses major practicality points over a very simple design issue. Buyers looking for a media-savvy desktop replacement might find it workable, but travelers should stay way until Gateway figures out how to make a decent set of hinges.

But while everyone else has been taking cues from Apple—placing industrial design at the top of their priority lists, experimenting with trendier metals, and using the latest post-processing techniques—Gateway hasn't put much effort into designing hot-looking laptops. Sized between 15.4-inch mainstream models and 17-inch desktop replacements, the just-right form factor will appeal to buyers who like to take their media on the road. And at $999.99, Gateway got the price just right, too. Gateway’s attractive midsize multimedia laptop packs in a lot of features for under a grand, but we expect better performance from a notebook slated for multimedia use.

The affordable Gateway MC78030u is a good choice for those seeking a stylish laptop for home use with decent battery life and good graphics performance. The touch-sensitive controls aren’t for everyone, and it’s a tad bulky, but we like the flush glass display and overall design. Plus, it’s about $275 less than a similarly configured HDX 16, and $200 less than a similarly equipped VAIO FW (and that system maxes out with a weaker 256MB ATI graphics card). As long as you don’t care about watching Blu-ray movies on your notebook, the MC7803u is quite a bargain.

Gateway: Gateway ist eine börsennotierte US-amerikanische PC-Handelskette nach dem Vorbild von Dell. Sie wurde 1985 in Iowa gegründet und (2009) den Sitz in Kalifornien. Gateway gilt als der drittgrößte PC-Hersteller in den USA und steht auf Platz 10 in der Welt (Dezember 2005). 2001 wurden Produktion und Vertrieb in Europa und Suedostasien beendet und die dortigen Niederlassungen geschlossen. 2007 kaufte der taiwanische Computerhersteller Acer Gateway für 710 Millionen Dollar. Von deutschsprachigen Magazinen wurden Gateway-Computer bisher so gut wie nie getestet.

2014 bis 2016 war Gateway nicht mehr unter den Top 10 der Laptop-Hersteller/Distributoren. Neuere Geräte von Gateway werden kaum noch von Fachmedien getestet (2016).

Diese Karten können nur sehr alte und sehr anspruchslose 3D Spiele flüssig darstellen.  Anwendungen wie Office, Internet surfen, Bildbearbeitung oder (SD) Videoschnitt sind jedoch ohne große Einschränkungen möglich.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Im GM45, GS45 und GE45 Chipsatz (Montevina Plattform) integrierte shared Memory Grafikkarte von Intel. Durch höhere Taktung und mehr Shader ist sie deutlich schneller als die X3100, jedoch immer noch nicht für Spieler empfehlenswert. Kann HD-Videos (AVC/VC2/MPEG2) dekodieren und so die CPU entlasten.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Core Duo Nachfolger mit längerer Pipeline und 5-20% Geschwindigkeitszuwachs bei 0.5 - 3 Watt mehr Stromverbrauch.

Der Notebook Core 2 Duo ist baugleich mit den Desktop Core 2 Duo Prozessoren, jedoch werden die Notebook-Prozessoren mit niedrigeren Spannungen und geringerem Frontsidebus Takt betrieben. Von der Leistung bleiben gleichgetaktete Notebooks deswegen (und auch wegen der langsameren Festplatten) 20-25% hinter Desktop PCs.

16.00: Dieser Bereich für Displayformate war und ist eine Seltenheit. Es ist größer als der allgemeine Standard von 15 Zoll, aber noch nicht im Bereich der großen Workstations. Man hat üblicherweise höhere Bildschirmauflösungen zur Verfügung, darunter leidet aber auch die Portabilität.
