The Dell XPS 14 9440 is one of the sexiest laptops you can buy. If you're looking for a traditional Intel-powered x86 machine, you'll probably like what you get. This is a nice machine to drop on your desk in the office, at a meeting, or during a presentation. It fits a professional setting and looks nice as a personal computer, albeit a pricey one. Fan noise is a bummer for those of us who are no longer accustomed to it, and while the battery life is good enough, I'd like it if it lasted a tad longer and would appreciate it if the machine weighed a bit less. These are relatively minor complaints, though, for a machine that gets so much right and looks this good doing it.

The XPS used to be the only MacBook alternative in town. That’s no longer the case, with rivals having caught up with metal milled ultraportables of their own that don’t skimp on performance. But if you’re captivated by the XPS 14’s distinctive looks, and don’t mind paying a premium for them, this is still a very capable laptop. It’s plenty powerful, has an absolutely gorgeous display, and improves on several areas that made the outgoing XPS 13 Plus a little hard to love. A dedicated graphics card also sets this laptop apart from many thin-and-light rivals, including the MacBook Pro. If gaming and creative apps in a portable package are a top priority, it’s well worth your attention. You give do up battery life in exchange, though. If you’re not wedded to Windows, an Apple MacBook Pro remains the longevity champ – and if you are, a Snapdragon X Elite-powered machine may be a better bet.

The 2022 Dell XPS 13 Plus showed up with a bold new design: a trackpad that blends seamlessly into the chassis, a perfectly flush “zero-lattice” chiclet keyboard, and a “capacitive touch function row.” Unfortunately, the new look was overshadowed by the fact that it ran too warm and had too short a battery life. Now, Dell has given the whole XPS lineup that same futuristic design, from the Intel or Qualcomm-powered XPS 13 models to new 14- and 16-inch sizes that seem aimed directly at the MacBook Pro. The XPS 14 ($2,500 as reviewed) doesn’t suffer from the same issues as the 13 Plus or even the XPS 15 — yet it’s still underwhelming. The XPS 14 can be configured with a discrete graphics card, like the XPS 15, but even with a smaller chassis and a more powerful GPU, it stays much cooler than the last XPS 15 we reviewed — or even the 13 Plus.

Although I can only speak to the RTX 4050 configuration, the Dell XPS 14 strikes a decent middle ground of a laptop suited to both work and media consumption. Its undoubtedly stylish design leaves me torn: it looks fantastic but at the cost of usability. You do get used to the unconventional trackpad design over time, but the capacitive function row instead of physical keys is a misfire. A 14-inch laptop without built-in USB-A or HDMI ports is also annoying. Including a dongle as a stopgap doesn’t make up for the convenience of natively integrated I/O ports. In all other facets, the Dell XPS 14 is a great laptop. If it weren’t for some design quirks, it’d almost be perfect.

The 2024 XPS 14 isn’t the best laptop you can buy right now. It isn’t the fastest out there, or the thinnest, or lightest, and it doesn’t have class-leading battery life. It’s a high-quality jack-of-all-trades that can generally do everything you want it to, for a price. But that specific price is often close to over $2,000 if you want upgrades like an OLED screen or 32GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. The fact of the matter is, even at its $1,799 base configuration, the XPS 14 is undercut by the M3 MacBook Pro, which is thinner, lighter, and boasts nearly twice as much battery life. On the power front, the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 will get you the same OLED panel, longer battery life, and an actual graphics card you can game on for $1,600, or closer to $1,400 on sale.

If you're a fan of the XPS 14's design, the only thing that may give potential consumers pause is its premium price. The 16GB, GeForce RTX 4050, 1980x1200 display configuration we tested comes in at $1599, which is a solid value compared to some similarly-configured, more-mainstream competing systems. If you don't need the discrete GPU, however, the XPS 14 can scaled back to around $1,499. However if you want Dell's gorgeous 3K OLED display option, that'll run you $1899 to start, with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. Going to a more capacious 1TB SSD and 32GB of RAM brings the total costs to $2199 for the OLED display version, which is where we prefer to dial this machine in. Of course, it's fair to expect to pay a price premium on a modern system, packed with the latest mobile platform technologies, built with very high-quality materials.

The Dell XPS 14 looks like a killer combination on paper: great battery life, a gorgeous OLED screen, and decent computing power. But, in real-world use, it feels like an inadequate compromise, ending up bigger and heavier than the XPS 13 and less powerful than the XPS 16. That’s most evident in gaming: while the XPS 16 had the gaming grunt to handle games at the full resolution of the screen in high frame rates, the XPS 14 doesn’t. To play modern games on the beautiful 3.2K resolution OLED screen, you have to knock the game resolution down to Full HD, or put up with pokey frame rates. The Dell XPS 14 is for those who really can't be content with a screen size that's any smaller. But as the middle ground between Dell XPS 13 and Dell XPS 16 it doesn't feel quite as accomplished in portability or power goals. It's still a great laptop in many areas though.

The Dell XPS 14 OLED is a very good laptop that largely achieves its aim of being all things to all people. You’ll pay a significant price over the standard FHD edition, but you’ll receive a top Intel 2024 CPU for productivity, a very capable GPU that enables gaming at a decent quality, and a wonderful OLED display for all of the above. There are a couple of interesting design choices – namely the capacitive row of function keys – that will turn off some people, while battery life averaging around 8 hours during productivity tests won’t do. At this price point, the XPS 14 OLED neither matches the top performers at the CPU nor the GPU level. Even the Ultra chip felt a little reigned-in in our benchmarking tests compared to testing within other makers’ high-end laptops. Looking at the competition, this doesn’t represent Dell mounting a huge comeback to become the best laptop around.

The Dell XPS 14 is a good laptop with plenty of performance for everyday tasks and some creative workloads paired with some seriously impressive battery life. It puts that capability into a stylish package with a gorgeous display. But all of that comes at a price. Next to its competition, the Dell XPS 14 asks a considerable premium and all it seems to offer in return is its looks. The XPS 14 isn’t the fastest of the bunch. It’s not the only one offering a splendid OLED display. And as long as its battery life is, it’s still a ways off from being the longest. If Dell’s design were as pleasant to use as it is to look at, it might have some merit, but the design presents as many hurdles and headaches as it provokes oohs and aahs. There’s some ground for the XPS 14 to stand on if you need a wonderful display, excellent battery life, and absolutely require the advantages of discrete graphics.

The Dell XPS 14 has much to offer, from its incredible performance and battery life to its stellar design and bright display. However, I can’t ignore how disappointed I am by the display’s color. I’ve seen budget Chromebooks that seem to be more colorful than the XPS 14. However, if you prioritize portability and a display bright enough to withstand the outdoors, then the XPS 14 might be right for you.

The XPS 14 OLED has a modern sci-fi design, vibrant display, admirable battery life, and powerful performance for productivity and gaming tasks. It’s also great at photo and video editing, too. If you need one laptop to handle all your computing needs, you could do far worse than the XPS 14 OLED. On the other hand, it does suffer from a subpar webcam, a lack of USB-A ports, a soft keyboard, and a dim display. Many of these issues can be addressed using an external webcam, laptop docking station, or USB adapter. For some, the soft keyboard may even be a plus. If you want the perfect laptop that doesn’t require any accessories to excel in your work and home lives, the XPS 14 is perhaps not the laptop for you.

Dell's consumer flagship XPS laptops always flaunt an extra-fancy feature or two. (We're glad these days it's an LED touch-strip key row instead of a webcam aimed up your nose.) The new XPS 14 (model 9440, starting at $1,699; $2,099 as tested) shows off the flashy top row and seamless haptic touchpad that premiered in the Dell XPS 13 Plus, plus Intel's latest AI-enhanced silicon and Microsoft's dedicated key for AI-enhanced Windows Copilot. The Dell XPS 14 is a sleek and swift performer, but its only advantages over other slimline laptops are a barely larger 14.5-inch display and an optional discrete GPU for more content-creation performance. With that, the Asus Zenbook 14X OLED (UX3404) remains our Editors' Choice award holder for high-end ultraportable laptops, while Asus' own Zenbook 14 OLED Touch (UM3406) presents a similar experience for half the XPS 14's price.

The Dell XPS 14 9440 is proof that a laptop can be over designed and also well built. Dell has taken the radical design that it debuted with the XPS 13 Plus two years ago and applied it to the larger 14- and 16-inch models in its premium XPS series. The XPS 14 and XPS 16 effectively replace the long-standing XPS 15 and 17 lines. Based on a 14.5-inch display powered by an Intel Core Ultra 7 processor and optional RTX 4050 graphics, the XPS 14 9440 features the unique design elements we first saw on the XPS 13 Plus: a borderless touchpad, a flat keyboard with little to no spacing between the keys and a Function row made up of touch-sensitive icons. In addition to the striking design, the XPS 14's machined-aluminum body feels rock solid. It's unquestionably well put together. As much as I like the look and feel of the XPS 14, a few aspects of its design trip me up. For one, I would happily give up the row of icons above the keyboard for physical Function keys, even if it meant the overall design looked a little less streamlined.

The Dell XPS 14 is a quiet, sleek, and minimalistic laptop with a bold aesthetic. It's one of the best-looking laptops on the market and can be decked out with some pretty powerful hardware. However, these upgrades come at a cost. This is not a scrappy, unpretentious workhorse, but rather a premium, ultra-modern device. It all comes down to personal preference, but for many users, competitors like the MacBook Pro 14 or Zephyrus G14 might be a more practical choice. However, if you want to make a statement, there is nothing that looks quite like the Dell XPS 14.

The Dell XPS 14 and the rest of 2024’s XPS laptops might not go over well with some folks due to their unconventional (and controversial) design. I can sympathize since I’m not enamored with the capacitive function row and invisible touchpad. However, I think this laptop’s strengths make up for its weaknesses. Contentious design aside, the XPS 14’s performance makes it a great Windows laptop for everyday work and even modern gaming (with the right configuration). The bright and colorful 14.5-inch OLED InfinityEdge is worth the cost of upgrading because makes everything look amazing and I had a fun time typing on the compact keyboard. And while I question the lack of physical function keys and touchpad, I still love the overall svelte profile. If you don’t mind the unorthodox design, the Dell XPS 14 is one of the best Windows laptops you can buy.

The Dell XPS 14 is a fantastic new entry into the storied XPS lineup, and it gives the MacBook Pro 14-inch its strongest competition yet thanks to its gorgeous OLED display, powerful processor and GPU, and svelte design. The XPS 14 isn't cheap, however, and there are some design quirks that many might not like. But overall, there are few Windows laptops that can compete right now.

I’ll share my verdict on the Dell XPS 14 once I’ve tested the consumer model. But based on my time with this enterprise version, I can tell this will be one of my favorite laptops of the year. I’m not a fan of certain aspects, such as the capacitive function row and lipless lid. But the XPS 14's gorgeous OLED display, svelte design, portability and RTX-powered gaming performance more than outweigh the negatives. Starting at $1,699, it’s also reasonably priced for what it offers.

I’ve been wanting Dell to make a laptop like the XPS 14 with discrete graphics for a long time. And in a lot of ways, the XPS 14 doesn’t disappoint. The performance is quite good, the screen is fantastic, and the laptop itself is beautiful. But is it a true MacBook Pro alternative? It certainly aims to be, including in its pricing. It’s hard to get a true apples-to-apples configuration, but since the MacBook Pro’s starting model come with its mini-LED display, the XPS 14 actually ends up being more expensive in certain configurations. There’s a lot more flexibility in how you can configure the XPS 14, but if you want both the OLED panel and the RTX 4050, you’re looking at a starting price of $2,400, which is actually $300 more than a similarly-configured M3 MacBook Pro.

The redesign of the standard Dell XPS 13 did not go well, marking a huge fall from grace. However, the XPS 13 Plus was a silver lining, albeit an expensive one. The new XPS range gains that pricey style across its 13-inch, 14-inch and 16-inch models and it’s the middle child that looks the most interesting. The Dell XPS 14 is looking like a promising contender for one of the laptops of 2024 but a high starting price could be the key factor that holds it back.

Dell is bringing the bold design of last year's XPS 13 Plus to the rest of the XPS lineup ahead of CES 2024 in Las Vegas — and now that includes new 14-inch and 16-inch models. The "Plus" name is also gone entirely: the new models are simply called the XPS 13, 14 and 16. They all sport the defining featured of the XPS 13 Plus: A seamless glass wrist rest, which hides an invisible haptic touchpad right in the middle; touch sensitive function buttons above the keyboard; and large key caps for more comfortable typing. And notably, the larger two models fix some of my biggest issues with the XPS 13 Plus.

Overall I'm impressed with what Dell is offering this year, as it seems that its refresh has addressed most of the issues we've found in previous iterations of the Dell XPS line. The only exceptions are the touchpad and function taskbar, which are both invisible with no buttons or ridges. The aesthetics are gorgeous and distinctive as befitting the series, with a great keyboard and incredibly vibrant display. Coupled with a revamped webcam and ventilation system, it finally feels every bit one of the best ultrabooks that it was meant to be. There are also the upgraded specs, including a CPU from the Meteor Lake line, that should guarantee some excellent performance once it can be properly benchmarked. Hopefully, the Dell XPS 14 will finally surpass the previous models with these enhancements. And maybe someday the non-tactile function key touch bar will be permanently retired.
