Archive.org versionEinen Schönheitspreis wird das Latitude D420 höchstwahrscheinlich nicht gewinnen. Edel sieht anders aus, dafür hinterlässt das Subnotebook einen ordentlich verarbeiteten und robusten Eindruck. Das externe DVD-Laufwerk spart zwar Platz und Gewicht, allerdings nur dann, wenn es gerade nicht gebraucht wird. Zusammen mit der optionalen Flash-Festplatte liefert Dells Kleingerät eine angenehm hohe, gefühlte Geschwindigkeit zu einem sehr niedrigen Stromverbrauch. Die Ausstattung ist durchaus ansehnlich, dafür ist die Laufzeit des Standardakkus nur mäßig und der Kauf des 55 Euro teureren Hochleistungsakkus fast schon Pflicht. Ganz im Gegensatz zum unverhältnismäßig lauten Lüfter stimmt das Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis.

Weitere positive Aspekte sind das Widescreen Display, welches mit einer Auflösung von 1280x800 Pixel für Übersicht sorgt, und die niedrigen Geräuschemissionen des D420. Auch die Tastatur kann sich für ein kompaktes 12 Zoll Gerät durchwegs sehen lassen. Alle wichtigen Tasten verfügen über eine vernünftige Dimensionierung. Durchwegs gewöhnungsbedürftig erscheint aber sowohl das Touchpad, als auch der Trackpoint. Das Display kann vor allem durch seine Auflösung und spiegelfreie Oberfläche punkten. Im Hinblick auf Ausleuchtung und Blickwinkelstabilität schneidet das Panel aber nicht besonders toll ab. Ist man darauf bedacht, seinem Sitznachbarn nicht unbedingt großartige Einblicke zu gewähren, kann diese Eigenschaft durchaus auch positiv gesehen werden.

The Dell Latitude D420 ends up as an almost-ideal business notebook PC. It's a fact that CD-Rs and DVD-Rs have become a very cheap and disposable way to pass large amounts of data around (especially if you're in publishing, advertising, engineering – almost any industry that deals with digital media, actually). Having to lug around an external drive isn't quite acceptable these days. It only gives Latitude D420 owners another peripheral to pack and (potentially) misplace.

The D420 weighs 3+ lbs, has a 12.1" screen, and is considered an ultralight, as compared to the 8.8 lbs, 17" screen, desktop replacement M1710. It has already been perfect for chair-side, sofa, or bed while checking email, surfing the 'Net, reading books, or playing online Sudoku, which is all I want it for and all I expect it to do. After a year in production the M1710 is still a top-notch, do-it-all, high performance laptop, but it gets a bit lap-heavy during a long evening, and taking to bed for a final round of Sudoku or to read myself to sleep is out of the question.

When the Latitude X1 was first introduced, it didn't resemble any of the other models in the Latitude line. In fact, it was a rebranded Samsung laptop that was incompatible with the Latitude line's peripherals, including the docking solution. With the new and improved D420, Dell has solved this problem, reconfiguring the X1's magnesium-alloy frame into the familiar Latitude form. The 3.6-pound frame is an absolute pleasure to tote around, and it can be even lighter, since you can trade the bundled 68-Wh (9-cell) battery for a 28-Wh (4-cell) one and knock the system weight down to 3 pounds.

With the D620 Dell had produced a well built and feature rich business notebook with an attractive design and good ergonomics. I was therefore keen to take a look at the Latitude D420, which represents Dell's latest ultra-portable business offering. Dell's new Latitude range just goes from strength to strength. The D620 was a great notebook at a very attractive price, and this D420 continues that trend. Not only is the D420 well built, stylish, small and light, but it's also feature rich. The inclusion of the integrated HSDPA module is just icing on the cake and makes this the ideal notebook for the road warrior who needs to always be connected.

The D620 arrived and flew straight to the top of the A List, and it's a similar story for the D420 - the baby of the Latitude family. Dell is currently tight-lipped about plans to replace the minuscule X1, but with the D420 weighing just 1.5kg with its six-cell battery there's little reason to look any further for a business ultraportable. It's powered by Intel's U2500, a Core Duo CPU with a speed of 1.2GHz. If that doesn't sound terribly impressive, the TDP (thermal design power, the maximum amount of power the CPU can draw) of merely 9W certainly does. Small but perfectly formed, the D420 has hours of battery life and can be connected to the internet almost anywhere.

Although certain aspects such as the slow 4200RPM hard drive, lack of internal optical drive, and merely satisfactory screen have proven less-than ideal, these are acceptable sacrifices in the pursuit of the best portability possible. Even despite the cons, there are more than enough pros to tip the scales in the opposite direction: the unit's light weight, excellent build quality and aesthetics, and commendable battery life. Therefore, with the scales tilted heavily in the D420's favor, I can wholeheartedly recommend Dell's Latitude D420 for those searching for a new ultra-portable.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Integrierter (onboard) Grafikchip auf Mobile Intel 945GM/C/Z/ME/ML Chipsätzen und Nachfolger des GMA 900. Kein Hardware T&L (für manche Spiele benötigt). Für Spiele kaum geeignet.
3D Spiele sind auf diesen Vertretern nur in Ausnahmen spielbar, grundsätzlich sind die Grafiklösungen hierfür jedoch nicht geeignet. Office Programme und Internet surfen dürfte jedoch ohne Problem möglich sein.

Der Vorteil von Subnotebooks liegt darin, dass das ganze Notebook klein dimensioniert sein kann und daher leicht tragbar ist. Das winzige Display hat noch den Vorteil wenig Strom zu benötigen, was die Akkulaufzeit und damit die Mobilität weiter verbessert. Der Nachteil ist, dass das Lesen von Texten anstrengend für die Augen ist. Hohe Auflösungen, die man von einem Standard-Laptop gewohnt ist, sind fast nicht nutzbar.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950
Es handelt sich um einen onboard Grafikchip und kann als schneller getakteter GMA 900 bezeichnet werden (auf Mobile Intel 945GM Express Chipsatz) mit 400 MHz Kerntakt, 4 Pixel-Pipelines, Shared Memory, Direct X 9 Vertex Shader 3.0 und Transorm und Lighting Support sowie HDTV Hardware Motion Compensation. Der Chip ist in unserem Grafikkarten-Vergleich in der zweitschlechtesten Leistungsklasse 5 (1=beste, 6=schlechteste) eingeordnet und kann daher nur für ältere Spiele sinvoll eingesetzt werden. Für Büroanwendungen und zum Surfen reicht es aber ohne Probleme. Der Vorteil von integrierten Grafiklösungen ist ein geringer Stromverbrauch, was längere Akkulaufzeiten ermöglicht. Speziell für Subnotebooks, wo Mobilität wichtig ist, ist das nützlich. Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 ist bei den integrierten Grafik-Lösungen derzeit sehr empfehlenswert. Dieser Prozessor ist ein Nachfolger des Pentium M und zugleich die Einzelkernversion des Core Duo. Dank der auf 65nm verringerten Strukturbreite hat er einen geringeren Stromverbrauch als Pentium M (maximal 27 Watt). Die Leistung ist etwa mit einem gleichgetaktetem Pentium M vergleichbar (etwas schneller dank leichter Verbesserungen) Aufgrund geringen Stromverbrauchs eignen sich diese Prozessoren auch für Subnotebooks. Dieses Displayformat kann man als grosses Subnotebook-Format bezeichnen. Der Vorteil liegt darin, dass das ganze Notebook relativ klein dimensioniert sein kann und daher leicht tragbar ist. Das kleine Display hat noch den Vorteil relativ wenig Strom zu benötigen, was die Akkulaufzeit und damit die Mobilität verbessert.
