Dells Inspiron Mini 9 empfiehlt sich, wenn es auf kleine Abmessungen und geringes Gewicht ankommt. Außerdem ist es dank seiner lüfterlosen Konstruktion flüsterleise. Bei der Verarbeitung leistet es sich keine Schwächen. Aufgrund des spiegelnden und dunklen Displays sollte es aber bevorzugt in geschlossenen Räumen zum Einsatz kommen. Bei der Laufzeit offenbart es jedoch eine SchwächeEs bietet die kürzeste Laufzeit im Testfeld. Die Tastatur ist durch das vom Standard abweichende Layout gewöhnungsbedürftig. Wer auf ein leises Netbook nicht verzichten will aber ein größeres Display braucht, mit der gebotenen Leistung auskommt und sich nicht an Windows Vista als Betriebssystem stört, der sollte sich den großen Bruder Inspiron Mini 12 anschauen.

Beides haben wir in unserem Test unter die Lupe genommen. Nur wer mit dem kleinen, spiegelnden Display und der kleinen Tastatur leben kann, sollte einen Kauf in Erwägung ziehen. Wer sich daran nicht stört, bekommt einen schicken Winzling zum fairen Preis.

Das Dell Inspiron Mini 9 präsentierte sich im Test als überaus mobiler und agiler Begleiter, der speziell auf langen Fahrten und Reisen für Kurzweile sorgt. Dank WLAN hat man mit dem Netbook stets Zugriff auf allfällig vorhandene Hotspots. Die Leistung des Mini 9 reicht außerdem aus, um alltägliche Office Funktionen laufen lassen zu können und so auch einfache Arbeiten am Gerät verrichten zu können. Das Gehäuse des Netbooks gibt sich überaus kompakt und robust, und erlaubt so einen intensiven mobilen Einsatz des Laptops. Auch das Gewicht von gerade einmal 1050 Gramm und das kompakte Netzteil mit nur 190 Gramm passen hier gut ins Konzept. Lediglich der Displaydeckel in Hochglanzoptik verlangt nach etwas mehr Pflege und sorgsamen Umgang beim Transport. Die Tastatur eignet sich mit veil Übung auch zum Verfassen von Texten im 10-Finger System. Insbesondere im rechten Bereich rund um die Enter-Taste werden die Tasten allerdings schon sehr klein, und können gezielt nur mehr mit einem einzelnen Finger getroffen werden. Das Display bietet zwar eine sehr gute Helligkeit bei guter Ausleuchtung, allerdings ist das spiegelnde Glare-Type Display alles andere als optimal bei Außeneinsätzen. Bei besonders hellen Umgebungslichtverhältnissen muss man sich mit störenden Reflexionen und Spiegelungen am Display abfinden.

Die Mischung aus Klavierlack und mattierten Oberflächen lassen den Dell Inspiron Mini 9 rein optisch in einem Business-Look auftreten. In geöffneter Stellung wird der mobile Geschäftsmann jedoch Nachteile im glänzenden Display erkennen. Eine durchschnittliche Ausleuchtung und mittelmäßige Kontraste unterstützen die Outdoor-Nutzung nicht. Die solide Atom-Leistung konnte uns im Test überzeugen, das Komplettpaket kommt jedoch ohne glanzvolle Innovationen aus. Ein SIM-Karten Slot ist vorhanden, ein UMTS-Modul wurde in dieser ersten Version aber nicht verbaut. Unterdurchschnittlich kommt die Schreibgeschwindigkeit der hochgelobten SSD-Platte daher. Nicht einmal 1 MB/s schafft das lesefreudige Laufwerk. Laut Dell Normwerte. Im guten Licht steht die lüfterlose Ausführung des Systems. Lediglich eine hochfrequente Aktivitätslautstärke des Displays ist sehr leise zu hören – perfekt für den Besuch in der Bibliothek.

Does Dell's little laptop sacrifice usability for portability? Can a netbook really be silent? Well, the Dell Mini 9 doesn't include a hard drive and it's also entirely passively cooled.
This is quite a feat given that it has the same CPU as the Asus Eee 1000, and that laptop is a loud beast at times. Still, the downside to this is that the machine gets quite hot underneath when the CPU is stressed. <st1:place w:st="on">Battery</st1:place> life is good too, though the Wi-Fi reception was quite weak, reporting only a 40% signal strength where others would get 70% upwards. Still, for £228 it's good value, and you can knock that down to £199 if you omit the webcam.

I love my Dell Mini 9n. It does everything I expected it to do and more (found out it plays Youtube and Hulu videos just fine, as well as interfaces with my camera and iPod). I should probably have gotten a larger notebook for my normal use, though, to correct the keyboard issue. I'm curious about the differences between the Mini 9, the Mini 10 and the Mini 12; but I'm not likely to buy another laptop in the near future. My price, as configured, was $250. Next day shipping and sales tax brought the grand total to $307. For $300 Dell reached my price/performance point and I was quite pleased to place my order.

Netbooks are an interesting bunch. On one hand, the enthusiast loses a lot of performance, but it seems the average user doesn't care. My sister has been using the netbook as a laptop for a few weeks now and I haven't heard any complaints. The internet is fast, applications like Word and Excel run well, and the screen is just big enough. And I think that's where it fits in the scale of things - for an enthusiast, its another device to have in your arsenal. I now own a quad core desktop, 13" laptop, 9" netbook, and an iPhone. Each one is good at a different thing - the laptop is great for around the house use, the desktop is good to use for media editing, or to sit down and write, code or do real "work" at, the netbook is great for trips and to take around town with, and the iPhone is always on, checking my email and letting me check sports scores or the weather, and some time killing games for when I get bored.

Without doubt, the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 is easily the nicest looking netbook on the market so far, and its performance scores show it's no slouch when it comes to crunching numbers. Despite its small footprint, it has a decent-size keyboard and provided you can live with the function keys being relegated to a secondary location, it's a good compromise. On the downside, its SSD drive is not only small but also a bit on the slow side. The built-in 3G is also a bit of a mixed blessing as currently you either have to enter a two-year contract with Vodafone or go without completely. We'd much prefer at least the option of buying a 3G enabled Mini 9 outright - especially given that who knows what the laptop market will look like in two years' time. That said, if you're going to £25 a month to spend anyway, a free netbook certainly isn't to be sniffed at.

Whatever you think about Dell, one thing’s for sure – it’s the first laptop manufacturer to realise that an ‘internet anywhere’ netbook isn’t much use without internet access. Wi-Fi is all well and good, but step out of network range with your little, low-cost laptop and it’s close to becoming dead weight. Dell comes close to making the Inspiron Mini 9 the perfect netbook, but by limiting the 3G option to a crippled Vodafone-only model, it just misses the mark.

So, what's the verdict? Well, with netbooks designed to surf the Internet, including the 3G SIM in the unit is a logical one. Yes, you will have to pay a premium for the inclusion of the SIM over the 2-year contract, but at least you get the feeling that this is going to last you 2 years rather than the 10 minutes you get with the Asus Eee offering. As a netbook offering, the only criticism is that the SSD just isn't really big enough. While you'll gain space in your bag by not having to carry around a dongle, that space is likely to be taken up with a portable hard drive.

Dell is a fairly late entry into the netbook market, but the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 has some very strong qualities to it. For one, it is the first netbook to go completely fanless meaning that it has silent operation. It also features a user accessible panel at the bottom making it easy for both Dell and consumers to easily upgrade or modify its features. Still, Dell could have improved the design some to really set it apart. The lack of function keys can be problematic as is the battery that while better than many 3-cells in competing units is still smaller than 6-cells offered by many others.

Overall I'm very pleased with this netbook. It doesn't suffer any more problems than any other sub-mini book on the market, and is very well built. An acid test is going to happen tommorrow as my wife has already swiped it to try at her all-day meeting tomorrow to see how well it fairs in real-world use for note taking and true business tasks. I'll let you guys know what she thinks after that.

Well, kiddies, the Mini 9 is a fantastic mobile companion that helps you stay connected and makes your life easier without breaking the bank. However, I can't shake the feeling that the Mini 9 is more like "the kid you're friendly with at the lunch table, but isn't your BFF." Yes, the Mini 9 is a great netbook. Yes, it has a great price. Yes, it will probably sell very, very well for Dell. No, this won't change the world as you know it. The truth is that at least a dozen other manufacturers have released or announced similar netbooks before the new Inspiron Mini 9 arrived. Dell had all the time in the world to develop something that slaughters the competition in a way that only Dell can.

Dell’s entrance into the mini-notebook market is bound to make the competition take notice. The Linux version of the Inspiron Mini 9 boasts the most consumer-friendly interface we have seen, its footprint is tiny but sturdy, and it gets more than three hours of battery life. The Linux version of the Acer Aspire one is $70 cheaper than our $399 configuration, has a bigger 8GB solid state drive, and a more ergonomic keyboard, but it lasts 1 hour and 14 minutes less on a charge and its Linux interface isn’t as polished. Despite its inferior keyboard, we recommend the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 over the Aspire one for those users interested in Linux. Spending the extra cash for this system is worth it for those seeking a small yet solidly built mini-notebook, and for those who want the ability to configure their system online.

Serie: Aufgrund hoher Portabilität und realativ guter Mobilitätswertungen für eine Nutzung unterwegs vorgesehen. Aufgrund der extrem niedrigen Auflösung muss man beim Internet-Surfen sehr viel scrollen.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Integrierter (onboard) Grafikchip auf Mobile Intel 945GM/C/Z/ME/ML Chipsätzen und Nachfolger des GMA 900. Kein Hardware T&L (für manche Spiele benötigt). Für Spiele kaum geeignet.

3D Spiele sind auf diesen Vertretern nur in Ausnahmen spielbar, grundsätzlich sind die Grafiklösungen hierfür jedoch nicht geeignet. Office Programme und Internet surfen dürfte jedoch ohne Problem möglich sein.
