The ASUS Zenfone 11 Ultra is a fantastic Android smartphone that will not make you puke out your lungs for payment. While it doesn’t stand toe-to-toe in all aspects, it stands tall enough to compete with iPhone and Galaxy. At least tall enough, I think, for most users. The snobby elite few, like myself, who are spoiled humans may still want the other phones, but even we would be happy with the Zenfone 11 Ultra. The only major flaw here is the lack of compatibility with Verizon.

Despite extensive testing, I have very mixed feelings about this smartphone. It was hard to find flaws that would disqualify this device as a potential purchase. I can’t fault the battery, display, performance, or software. I appreciate that at a price starting from $977 / €894, the ASUS Zenfone 11 Ultra comes with 16 GB of RAM (the 12/256 GB version starts at $925 / €852). Few competitors can offer such performance for this price. Yes, during very intensive use, the processor can cause the ASUS to heat up. Let those who don’t suffer from this issue cast the first stone. Heating is a natural phenomenon, and it’s hard to consider it a real drawback. The camera (30x zoom) was a bit disappointing, though not entirely, as overall the cameras on this device perform well. ASUS should definitely address some issues.

The Asus Zenfone 11 Ultra is capable of delivering decent photos and video clips in everyday use but could not quite match the best Ultra Premium competitors in the DXOMARK Camera tests, achieving lower scores pretty much across the board. Exposure was good when capturing landscape photos and our testers liked the fairly accurate white balance and low noise levels in bright light conditions. However, they also noticed inaccurate skin tones, as well as noise and a lack of detail and in low light. Zoom shots lacked detail and could be noisy at most focal length setting and while video clips were stable and smooth in most scenarios, video detail was low and exposure, color and autofocus were all unstable in some conditions.

I was offered the opportunity to try the Asus Zenfone 11 Ultra, the Taiwanese company’s latest flagship. While the handset isn’t coming to Canada, I jumped at the chance to take the smartphone for a spin. I’ve been using the device for several weeks, and it’s been pretty enjoyable. Since the handset isn’t coming to Canada, let’s list things you should know about the Zenfone 11 Ultra instead of a full review.

For the price there are certainly going to be better alternatives out there, and unfortunately it doesn’t really compete with the other ‘Ultras’, let alone standard flagships on the market. Overall, the phone produces good images and video. But it is clear where all the resources have been put: hardware, AI and stabilisation, without much consideration for processing and image quality. The battery is great, the screen looks great, stabilisation works well and the AI features have their place. But, for roughly $200/£100 more than its predecessor, I think ASUS has once again taken another swing and miss with this, let’s hope any future editions revisit some of the key camera features and their quality to bring this all together. It’s certainly not a stand-out phone for photographers.

The Asus Zenfone 11 Ultra display showed a solid performance in our testing, with scores that were well-balanced across the attributes. The device showed good brightness under sunlight, making the screen very readable in challenging conditions, even though there was some lack of contrast in the darkest shades. On its website, Asus claims a peak brightness of 2,500 nits to ensure “easy readability even under direct sunlight” although our tests under intense lighting conditions measured peak brightness at 2320 nits. In indoor conditions, the Zenfone 11 Ultra’s screen luminance was slightly higher than that of its competitors. The Zenfone 11 Ultra’s screen colors were rendered naturally when tested in the Natural Mode for Display-P3 content and Standard Mode for sRGB content.

I’ve been testing Zenfone 11 Ultra on and off for a couple of months and in recent weeks have been using it as my main Android phone. It’s hard to fault the phone, as it performs capably in so many areas. However, the pricing means it is up against a lot of similarly equipped Android competition from Honor, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Samsung and Google. The latter two firms promise much longer terms of support with security patches and OS upgrades. As does Apple with iPhone.

On the one hand, ASUS Zenfone 11 Ultra has lost the unique feature that the smartphones in the line had in the past few years. Now it is not the most compact flagship smartphone. On the other hand, the demand for top smartphones with large screens is much higher now. So, from a business point of view, this decision is quite justified. Moreover, Zenfone 11 Ultra is a really nice smartphone. It has a great bright AMOLED display, a top-end processor, good battery life, stylish appearance, as well as great sound and even a 3.5 headphone jack. But there is still room for improvement. Given the price, it is already competing with top Samsung and other A-brands.

For all its strengths, the Asus Zenfone 11 Ultra lost one of its key selling points by abandoning the compact sub-6-inch design of its predecessors. That’s going to alienate some Zenfone fans, while also garnering new interest from Android lovers who demand plenty of screen real estate. If its bulk doesn’t put you off, the Zenfone 11 Ultra has a lot going for it, but there are a few areas where it’s not best in class. For example, if camera quality and or screen resolution are your highest priority – and you have deep pockets – you should certainly weigh it up against something like the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.

The Dell Inspiron 16 Plus 7640 could be a great companion for people who are often on the go and need a big-screen laptop. In this scenario, if you choose an iGPU-only machine with a smaller battery, you’ll get a sub-2.0 kg notebook with a thin profile. If you prefer a long-lasting battery, look for an Intel Evo-certified device combined with the optional 90Wh unit (just like we did). The keyboard is comfortable for work but the left and the center areas are a bit flexy during harsh typing which isn’t a pleasant experience. The touchpad is also decent. Despite the modest-looking thermal system with just one fan, the optional Core Ultra 7 155H can maintain a 2.74 GHz P-core clock and a 55W power limit in longer CPU loads which is a pretty respectable result for such a thin laptop.

The Zenfone 11 Ultra is a massive step up, especially in size, compared to its predecessor. The small refinements make the Zenfone 11 Ultra an excellent flagship, worthy of your pocket. And while it lacks in the support department, it makes up for it with its superb performance and endurance. The Asus Zenfone 11 Ultra is both an interesting direction for the company to take and a bit of a head-scratcher. Rather than give us an optimised and sized-up version of its recent Zenfone work, what we essentially have is a tweaked and rebadged ROG Phone 8. This results in predictably outstanding performance and strong – if not class-leading – battery life. You also get a big, bright, responsive and colour-accurate display, as well as a UI that’s far less in-your-face than many of its rivals. However, what was a relatively sleek gaming phone turns out to be a slightly hefty and charmless mainstream phone, with little to no apparent relation to the stylish Zenfone 10. In a similar vein, what was a strong camera system for a gaming handset turns out to be merely adequate in mainstream flagship terms. The Asus Zenfone 11 Ultra is a solid all-round full-sized flagship phone at a fairly competitive price, but it feels like Asus is cautiously dipping its toes into such waters rather than diving in with a distinct product.

The Zenfone 11 Ultra sees Asus move away from the small phones where the Zenfone brand has made its name, but there’s still a lot to like. The large 144Hz OLED screen is one of the best on any smartphone, especially when paired with stellar Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 performance. A slightly unusual design helps it stand out from the crowd, while battery life is very good. However, there are two key things that let it down. The cameras are frustratingly error-prone, while Asus only offers a basic two years of Android OS updates. With its key selling point as a small phone gone, it’s hard to justify buying the Zenfone 11 Ultra over rivals at a similar price. And it’s not clear if the regular Zenfone 11 will ever be released.

Undoubtedly, the Asus Zenfone 11 Ultra is a fabulous choice in the flagship segment. It has full-fledged hardware to perform well in extreme conditions whether it’s gaming or overclocking. Although, it’s the first phone from the series, but still, it’s worth praising. The device is an all-rounder phone that you should consider looking for. On the other hand, if you are searching for a choice, you should check out the Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus. It’s an interesting smartphone that delivers outstanding specs according to the price points. You will receive decent camera results with beautiful images and video recording abilities. Overall, if you are looking for a complete package you can consider picking this phone as well. But at the same time, consider your requirements and then choose a phone.

Picture lovers have a 50MP main camera on the back to snap highly detailed imagery, with a decent night mode for low-light moments in the evenings. The camera in filming mode also boasts Super HyperSteady video stabilisation, which basically means your image won’t shake even if you do while recording. In the hand, the 11 Ultra is big. Substantially bigger than, say, an iPhone 14 Pro. But it’s slim and smooth exterior makes it feel elegant in the palm, barring that oddly bulky camera box on the top corner. Asus are also boasting some eco credentials as recycled materials are used in the chassis. It comes in four colours, Skyline Blue and Eternal Black as well as Misty Grey and Desert Sand. Does this handset visually stand out as a must-buy in the market, no.

The Asus Zenfone 11 Ultra is an excellent, but also very strange Asus smartphone. It looks like its ancestor. However, that parent is not the Zenfone 10, but the ROG Phone 8, with which it is identical in almost all respects. The engine in the two mobiles is also the same, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. This makes the Zenfone 11 Ultra one of the undeniably fastest mobiles on the market right now. It also makes it expensive, but Asus has still managed to keep the price below €1,200. This makes it one of the cheapest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 mobiles. With three rear cameras, including one with Asus’ ingenious gimbal image stabilisation, the Zenfone 11 Ultra is a super powerful phone that should be considered by anyone looking for a high-end Android phone. But mobile buyers are loyal to Apple, Samsung and OnePlus. So it’s likely that the Zenfone 11 Ultra will also remain a well-kept secret.

If you're considering picking up the Tab S9 FE+, I would recommend considering exactly what you need from your next tablet. If you're after a big screen and long battery life, this is the one for you. But if you'd be okay with something a little smaller or serves as a second device when you aren't using it, the Pixel Tablet is always a great option. It comes with a smaller 10.2-inch screen and a Tensor G2 processor, and it bundles a speaker dock in the box that turns it into a smart display. Plus, it's $200 cheaper. But if you have your heart set on a big tablet for watching movies and multitasking on the go and want to keep your spending in check, the Tab S9 FE+ is a solid choice. There's nothing really special that stands out about the device, but as a general everyday tablet (that happens to be larger than average and comes with a stylus in the box), it's quite good.

The Zenfone 11 Ultra is a very capable phone—super-fast, snappy, and with an amazingly bright screen. The real problem here is, at least the way we see it, that Asus has taken the ROG Phone 8 and streamlined it into a mainstream device. It's a valid marketing strategy. People do love big and fast phones but often feel reluctant to buy a "gaming" phone, so this might work. The thing is, while the previous Zenfone models were unique in the Android market due to their compact form factor, now the Taiwanese company has to compete with behemoths such as Samsung and Apple and fight off value propositions such as the OnePlus 12. It's not an easy gig to pull off. Pre-orders in the US are live now, early birds will get free Cetra TWS in-ear headphones in white with every order. US official sales channels are the ASUS eStore and Mobile Advance. Mobile Advance will also carry on the Amazon US marketplace, so you can get the Zenfone 11 Ultra through Amazon as well.

The Zenfone 11 Ultra uses the ROG Phone 8 as a foundation, and it retains the same chassis with a few tweaks. The design is minimalist, but you don't get much in the way of a unique identity — not surprising given it is a rebadged model. What you'll like more is the hardware; the Zenfone 11 Ultra has a large AMOLED panel that's terrific in daily use, it retains a 3.5mm jack and IP68 ingress protection, a large battery that lasts longer than just about any other device, and it is one of the fastest phones around. ASUS also made meaningful changes to its cameras, and the clean software is a delight to use. That said, the cameras aren't on the same level as other flagships, and ASUS's asinine software policy makes the Zenfone 11 Ultra a non-starter.

After spending two weeks with the Zenfone 11 Ultra, I came away quite underwhelmed. Compared to a lot of the other phones I’ve reviewed this year, there’s just not a lot here from ASUS. It’s like a base model phone, with all of the special features being saved for the ROG Phone 8 series. A lot of what made Zenfone so popular in the tech community in the past couple of years is gone. The small size, the great battery life, and the impressive price tag are all gone. The Zenfone 10 started at $699 here in the US last year. The Zenfone 11 Ultra will start at €999 in Europe (we don’t have a US price just yet, but expect it to be similar). That’s a massive $300 bump for a phone that’s losing out on a lot of things compared to its predecessor. And that makes it challenging to recommend this phone.

An excellent phone... er, we mean fone, albeit one that lacks the ‘wow’ factor you see in other flagships. Conservatively designed but well-specced and responsive, this year’s ASUS Zenfone 11 Ultra has a bigger screen, thinner bezel and larger battery than previous models. Still, its cameras don’t live up to the best on the market. It’s cursed with being a merely good phone, still a fine choice, in a market dominated by giants.

I have no idea why you would really want to buy the Asus Zenfone 11 Ultra. I like Asus phones and usually take pleasure in recommending them, but in this instance, I genuinely think you should just buy the ROG Phone 8 Pro with its toned-down (but still cool) design and unobtrusive but useful gaming features. It’s the Zenfone 11 Ultra, just more interesting. But if you never play games, it would be a waste, and the trouble in this situation is the Zenfone 11 Ultra’s competitors are all much more compelling, often better looking, and come with longer software update commitments. Sadly, Asus hasn’t given you a real reason to buy the Zenfone 11 Ultra over them and has simply stripped back all the bits that make the ROG Phone 8 Pro fun and exciting to leave a rather forgettable phone.

We unquestionably enjoyed our time with the Zenfone 11 Ultra. Asus has a very "no-nonsense" approach to smartphone development and the general UX, especially regarding the Zenfone line, which is meant to have a much broader appeal than the ROG Phone. At the same time, the Zenfone 11 Ultra confuses us on multiple points. Primarily, we are left wondering if this big new Ultra is all for the Zenfone 11 generation or perhaps there is a compact sibling still in the works. Naturally, Asus is keeping a tight lip on the matter and, on occasion, brings up the Zenfone 10 as a viable compact alternative that will continue to be sold in the foreseeable future. Let's not beat about the bush here or misrepresent reality.

Combining the Asus ROG Phone 8's body with the Zenfone 10's sensibilities has resulted in a phone that the average flagship Android buyer will love for how long it lasts on a charge, or how beautiful its display makes things look. The problem is that this is an Ultra-branded phone that isn't camera-focused, and that has a surprisingly short software support window, so buyers with their sights set on getting the best in these areas may decide to steer clear.

The world was hardly crying out for a big screen Zenfone, especially after Asus had transformed the ROG Phone 8 into more of an everyman model. Without that handset’s gaming credentials, and a ‘me too’ screen size that simply blends in to an already crowded flagship market, there’s little about the Zenfone 11 Ultra that gets the blood pumping. Don’t let my star rating convince you this is a bad phone. It’s got performance muscle and a beefy battery, along with a very bright screen and a few slick AI additions. But that’s not enough when rivals also offer superior camera quality, and often for less money. A OnePlus 12 is simply the better buy. Perhaps an entry-level variant with 128GB of storage and a lower price might’ve made things interesting.

This is an unusual review to write. There is no question that the Asus Zenfone 11 Ultra is a good phone. It's almost like the blueprint for an Android phone in 2024, and it's solid. With that being said, it doesn't really offer anything to get too excited about. The performance is good, though it can fall down under intense load. The camera is good, but has issues with over-sharpening. Ultimately, the biggest issue it's going to face is comparison to the Asus ROG Phone 8. Sure, these models run a little cheaper than the ROG range, but I'd wager that it probably isn't enough to steer people away – particularly when the ROG Phone has dialled down its gamer-centric design language. In short, this is a really capable handset which represents decent value in the current market. If you're a fan of the design – and want some really top-tier videography hardware – this should certainly be on your list.

It’s Big Android Phone season, because the Zenfone 11 Ultra arrives on the heels of the Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus, the S24 Ultra, and the OnePlus 12. They all use the same chipset (well, provided you buy the S24 Plus in the US) and not-a-one of them has a screen smaller than 6.7 inches. I can clearly recommend three out of four of these phones, but the Zenfone, I’m just not sure about. The Galaxy S24 Ultra is the obvious pick for someone who wants the absolute most out of their phone. The $799 OnePlus 12 is the right choice if you want a big screen and want to spend a little less. For everyone else, there’s the Galaxy S24 Plus — the crowd-pleaser that’s readily available with trade-in and carrier deals galore. The Zenfone just doesn’t earn a clear space for itself here. Maybe if it had an outstanding camera or it had better network support in the US or, I don’t know, a thoughtful form factor unlike anything else on the market.

The Asus Zenfone 11 Ultra's larger size coupled with newer specs make it a standout portable entertainment center. With a processor that can easily handle demanding games, audio options that make your music sound great no matter how you want to listen and an expansive screen that's bright for movies or web browsing, the 11 Ultra should appeal to anyone that uses their phone primarily like a small television. But unfortunately for the price, it's hard to ignore the short software and security timeline. If you're looking for a phone that's great for streaming videos and music, and you also appreciate having decent cameras for photography and videos, the Zenfone could be an appealing option, as long as you plan on moving to another phone in three to four years. However, if you hope to use your next phone until it's completely broken, there are a lot of other great Android phones from Samsung and Google that will get software support through 2031.

For instance, AI Transcript will feel very familiar to anyone who’s looked at the S24 series. After a slight delay, ASUS recorder app converts audio to text on-device and can use the cloud to generate audio summaries. Chinese, English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Japanese languages are supported. AI Call Translator works in a similar fashion, translating calls in real-time, on-device, for both you and the person on the other end, even if they don’t have a Zenfone. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to test this feature. We’ve seen ASUS’ other AI features before. AI Noise Cancellation works on a broader set of apps, such as Whatsapp or Telegram, reducing background noise for both incoming and outgoing audio.

The Asus Zenfone 11 Ultra is a fine phone – it does most things well, but it doesn’t really exceed in any given area. The cameras are pretty much in-line, if not quite as capable, as similarly priced alternatives, the screen tech mostly matches that of the competition, and despite having a larger battery than most, it’s still just a one-day device. That said, the Zenfone 11 Ultra’s highly customisable approach to Android 14 is one of the best around, offering the choice between stock and ZenUI on a granular level, and the AI features enhance the experience even if they don’t go quite as far as the likes of Samsung’s Galaxy AI.

The $899 Asus Zenfone 11 Ultra goes toe-to-toe with top phones from Google and Samsung for $100 less. It provides strong performance in an attractive design with long battery life, useful AI features, and gaming chops to spare. It's certainly a good value compared with the ROG phone, considering the Zenfone gives you pretty much the same experience in a different design for less money. That said, the Galaxy S24+ and the Pixel 8 Pro support mmWave 5G, have even better cameras, and offer longer-term support, so they're definitely worth considering. For the absolute top Android phone experience, meanwhile, the Galaxy S24 Ultra includes a stylus and has the best camera of the bunch, but it's also the most expensive at $1,299.99.

Reviewing Asus' Zenfone 11 Ultra, a 6.8-inch super-sized smartphone sporting similar camera tech and specs to the ROG Phone 8. There's no compact version yet, only the Zenfone 11 Ultra - but is it a rival to the Samsung S24 Ultra, Pixel 8 Pro etc? Well, no, not really. It's considerably cheaper than the Galaxy, but as a package Google's flagship phone is better. For one, the camera on the Asus Zenfone 11 Ultra isn't as dependable when the lighting isn't great. I also prefer the design of the Pixel 8 phones. That said, Asus has nailed the performance here. Genshin Impact plays with a stable frame rate for hours at a time, while the Zenfone 11 Ultra keeps its cool. Plus, the battery life is excellent so you can keep going all day with no worries.

The Asus Zenfone 11 Ultra moves away from the compact phone form factor of the last three Zenfones, instead it is now a 6.8-inch "Ultra" flagship with a proper telephoto lens to boot. The battery is also much larger, at 5,500 mAh. The phone is powered by, of course, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The main Sony IMX890 camera is still built on-top of a miniature six-axis gimbal for enhanced stabilization.
