I'd love to review the ROG Flow Z13 as a gaming tablet, a form factor that's sort-of new and sort-of exciting (they've been trying to make them happen for good few years now), but since I've found I've been using it exclusively in laptop mode for the better part of a week, I cannot lie to myself. It's a laptop with a detachable keyboard and it's no better than most laptops for that feature. It's also hella expensive. The reason I'm not yet satisfied with either the iGPU or the Flow Z13 on the whole is that it's entirely unattainable for many PC gamers. This is not the dedicated GPU killer that it's made out to be, or was hoped to be in the lead-up to launch. It's maybe a step on that journey for AMD, a proof of concept that discrete GPU performance is possible for an iGPU, and I do really hope it leads to better things.

A similarly-priced gaming laptop will likely get better performance, and be usable in a wider range of situations. However, none of that is the device's fault, and it does very much do what it says on the tin. After all, it's got a super-powerful CPU that performs admirably under strain, built-in graphics that are incredibly impressive on their own merits, and the ability to function as a standalone tablet when useful.

The 180Hz screen covers the sRGB gamut at 99% and the color accuracy is suitable for professional usage when our “Design and Office” profile is applied. On first inspection, the ROG Z13 Flow doesn’t do anything more to convince me gaming hybrids with external graphics are the future than its predecessor did. But it’s great to see Asus championing the form factor, while addressing a few of the previous version’s pain points. An improved keyboard, more effective cooling and ample connectivity should make it every bit as usable on the daily as a traditional 2-in-1, while the next-gen AMD internals will be better placed to handle games without having to fall back on the eGPU. Exact performance is a mystery until AMD and Nvidia spill the beans about their newest silicon, but I don’t doubt performance will be suitably epic.

An improved keyboard, more effective cooling and ample connectivity should make it every bit as usable on the daily as a traditional 2-in-1, while the next-gen AMD internals will be better placed to handle games without having to fall back on the eGPU. Exact performance is a mystery until AMD and Nvidia spill the beans about their newest silicon, but I don’t doubt performance will be suitably epic.
