Gegenüber der Variante mit Atom-Prozessor ist der Eee PC 900 nur ein wenig langsamer. Allerdings stattet ihn Asus mit einem kleineren Akku aus, was die Laufzeit in etwa halbiert. Mit 12 GB ist auch der Flash-Speicher nicht besonders groß. Von seinen Brüdern erbt der Eee PC 900 das dunkle Display und die gewöhnungsbedürftige Tastatur. Das Touchpad ist Multi-Touch-fähig: Per Fingergeste lassen sich beispielsweise Bilder aufzoomen.

Der Asus Eee PC ist ein Klassiker unter den Netbooks, auch wenn es mittlerweile ähnliche Produkte zu einem ähnlichen Preis gibt. Den Eee PC liebt man auch schon wegen dem netten kleinen Aussehen. Das Produkt ist supermobil, auch wenn der Akku nicht lange hält, die Tastatur klein ist und der Bildschirm nicht sehr hell ist. Eine Budget Empfehlung ist das Produkt sicherlich Wert, auch wenn mittlerweile neue Asus Eee PC Modelle mit besserer Technik schon erhältlich sind.

Wie sich die unterschiedlichen Konzepte bewähren, müssen hier alle derzeit erhältlichen Netbooks zeigen. Das Display des Asus Eee PC 900 ist sehr dunkel; hierzulande wird das Netbook nur mit Windows XP verkauft.

Sozusagen unter dem Motto: „Easier to Learn, Easier to Work and Easier to Play“ stehen die drei Eee’s bei der aktuellen Version des Eee PC 900, ausgestattet mit einigen neuen Gadgets die das Leben mit dem Winzling in der Tat um vieles einfacher machen. Allen voran das neue größere Display mit einer Diagonale von 8.9 Zoll und einer Auflösung von nunmehr 1024x600 Pixel. Hinsichtlich Benutzerfreundlichkeit ist mit Windows XP auch hinsichtlich des Betriebssystems ein Schritt nach vorne gemacht worden, auch wenn für dieses an der Leistung des Mini-Notebooks geschraubt werden musste. Vorerst kommt wie im 4G/701 auch im Eee PC 900 eine Celeron CPU von Intel zum Einsatz, die jedoch bei maximaler Leistung betrieben wird. Unterstützt von einem Gigabyte Arbeitsspeicher und insgesamt 12 Gigabyte Massenspeicher in Form von zwei SSDs bietet der Eee 900 nun ausreichend Leistung um einfachsten Office Anwendungen gerecht zu werden, wenn man auch hin und wieder etwas Geduld bei kurzen Wartezeiten aufbringen muss. Die Tastatur bietet nach wie vor ein absolutes Mindestmaß ein einem vollwertigen Eingabegerät, mehr ist aufgrund des kompakten Gehäuses aber beim aktuellen Modell nicht zu machen. Sehr positiv überrascht waren wir vom neuen Multitouch Touchpad, das den Eee 900 mit einer Reihe von neuen praktischen Funktionen ausstattet. So positiv die Entwicklung beim Display auch ist, als Kehrseite der Medaille muss nach wie vor die für einen sinnvollen Außeneinsatz deutlich zu geringe Displayhelligkeit des Eee PC 900 kritisiert werden. Das größte Potential des kompakten Begleiters liegt nun mal in seiner Mobilität, die aufgrund der mäßigen Displayhelligkeit leider deutlich eingeschränkt wird. Daran kann letzten Endes auch eine durchaus passable Akkulaufzeit von bis zu vier Stunden nur wenig ändern.

Der große Mini

Besonders geschickt sieht es nicht aus, den Eee PC 900 so kurz vor der Markteinführung des Atom-Nachfolgers 901 zu bringen, muss er sich so nicht nur gegen seinen Vorgänger behaupten, sondern auch gegen den Nachfolger, von dem noch gar nicht alle Details bekannt sind. Verglichen mit dem Eee PC 4G punktet der 900 jedenfalls mit  mehr Speicher, dem größeren Touchpad und dem besseren Display, das besonders für Windows-Anwendungen zwar keine gute, aber nun immerhin benutzbare Auflösung bringt.

Asus' Mini-Notebook Eee PC 900 hinterlässt insgesamt einen guten Eindruck. Für 399,- Euro Listenpreis (Stand Ende Juni 2008) bekommt man einen sehr kleinen und leichten Laptop (ca. 1,01 kg inkl. Akku) mit insgesamt guter Verarbeitung. So flott wie größere aktuelle Notebooks ist er nicht. Die Geschwindigkeit des Intel-Prozessors Celeron M 353 (0,9 GHz) ist deutlich geringer als die der neuesten Notebook-Prozessoren von Intel (PassMark Performance Test: 152 Punkte). Auch die aktuellen etwas leistungsschwächeren Stromspar-Prozessoren für Subnotebooks sind schneller. Seine Leistung reicht jedoch ohne Probleme für das mitgelieferte Windows XP Home und für typische alltägliche Anwendungen wie Surfen, E-Mails abrufen und schreiben, Texte mit Office-Programmen schreiben und einfaches Multimedia (Wiedergeben von Filmen, Fotos, Musik, einfache Bildbearbeitung). Dazu tragen auch 1024 MByte Arbeitsspeicher bei. Gut für die Alltagstauglichkeit ist auch der etwas größere Plattenplatz. Das Vorgänger-Modell Eee PC 4G musste sich noch mit 4 GByte begnügen.

Doch das hat seinen Preis: Der liegt mit 400 Euro zwar immer noch sehr niedrig. Doch dafür (oder ein wenig mehr) bekommen Sie heute schon ein Standard-Notebook mit großem 15,4-Zoll-Display, das deutlich leistungsfähiger und besser ausgestattet ist als der Zwergen-Laptop von Asus. Expected price is around 400€ and there will be available two models on market. One will be delivered with Linux and 20GB SSDs (4+16) and other model will have Windows XP and 12GB drives (4+8). The main question is: Is Eee 900 worth 100€ more from its predecessor? When we take into consideration that most of users of previous model bought additional memory cards and USB disks to expand storage, difference in price becomes much smaller. For money invested in storage expansions for Eee PC 700, your expenses will get close to price of new Eee PC 900 and with it you will get bigger screen and more RAM, which by our opinion turn the scales to Eee PC 900 side. Certainly, for that kind of money you can buy notebook with far better performances, which is the biggest argument of all Eee’s opponents, but you will not get same class of product. Small weight and dimensions are main reasons why so many people chose this little guy. The only problem for Asus is competition that offers some interesting things. And that’s why ASUS announced new models that are already here – Asus Eee PC 901 with Intel Atom Processor and Asus Eee PC 1000 with same CPU but with 10’’ screen diagonal.

Asus has done a good job with the Eee PC 900. Almost all of the things that we - and virtually everyone else - like about the Eee PC 700 have been improved upon in some way, shape or form - except for the price. The Eee PC 900 delivers a much better user experience than its older counterpart, thanks to its larger, higher resolutions screen, default CPU clock speed of 900MHz, and 1GB of RAM. The bigger screen makes using the Eee PC easier on the eyes, and it will likely make users more productive too, simply because of the increased real estate. Having more available memory definitely helped the machine feel smoother and more responsive as well, which is another major plus. And despite a bigger screen and better overall performance, the Eee PC 900 is only 7mm larger than the Eee PC 700 and provides only slightly less battery life.

In this review I will be doing the standard harddrive benchmarks, and all the normal benchmarks that are expected. The EEE PC 900 series offers a 8.9" Display, 1024 x 600 resolution. The screen is pretty clear like a normal laptop. Nothing spectacular. The keyboard is very small and so is the touchpad.

Last year our editorial staff was absolutely amazed by the original Eee PC. The original Eee PC finally delivered something that many consumers have wanted since laptops first arrived on the market: an extremely portable laptop with reasonable performance for travel at an extremely low cost. It's a shame that Asus seems to have forgotten the original idea behind the Eee PC. When Asus first announced the Eee PC in 2007, their goal was to sell this laptop for a mere $199. That $199 price point is what got our attention. In the months that followed, the price gradually increased and the specs decreased until the Eee PC 4G was released at a price of $399. At a $400 price point the original Eee PC was still a fantastic deal ... a practically "disposable" travel laptop. Now, as more and more companies begin releasing their own mini notebooks, the price keeps increasing with only a modest increase in features.

Sometimes, keeping the same formula can be a good thing, and in this case ASUS has taken an already popular product and given it an update that puts it in good stead against its current crop of competitors. The updated screen of the ASUS Eee PC 900 puts it squarely against HP's Mini-Note, and its more affordable price point, better processor and lighter weight does give it an edge when you stop to think about it. Also, the battery life of the Eee PC 900 is something to take note of, outlasting HP's Mini-Note with just a high capacity 4-cell battery (as compared to the 6-cell battery on the reviewed Mini-Note); it's also one of the most portable devices we've had the chance to review in recent times. As such, the portability of the Eee PC 900 is a big plus factor in their favor. It's not only light, it's also lasts for a quite a while more than usually expected. However, its limited storage capacity works against it here, though there's always portable flash drives to supplant this need somewhat.

The Eee PC 900 is all about ease of use and portability, so it's churlish to grumble about specifications. The little laptop ticks all the right boxes when it comes to features and performance. It's probably not going to replace your 15in workhouse notebook, but it might well become a favoured second laptop to take with you on your travels. There's the extra storage space, of course, but the real benefit here is the bigger screen. It's both easier to read than the 701's and, because of the higher resolution, able to show more. The 900 isn't the revolution the 701 was - or, thanks to the higher price, as compelling. But with this model Asus got the form-factor down pat.

As an entry-level machine you get a lot of bang for your buck. The lightweight appeal, the fast software and the easy to use interface means this will serve your needs if all you need is internet, word processing and email on the go, on a budget. Where things start to get murky is if you are looking to do more than that on the go or from the sofa. At £329 the Asus Eee 9000 starts competing against fully functional cheap laptops that will offer more features and a bigger screen albeit in a bigger box, something that wasn't in the equation when the Eee PC was just £212. So what's our advice? If you are looking for a desktop replacement this isn’t going to be it. If you are looking for a field computer for the train, for college or for using around the house from the sofa, the Asus Eee will be just the laptop for you at a price that isn't going to make too much of a dent in your bank balance.

Asus's original Eee PC, the 701, caused a huge stir in the laptop market, and rightly so. Before it materialised ultraportable laptops were well beyond the reach of most wallets; yet for just £230, the Eee PC offered a fully functional, ultraportable laptop. Sure, it wasn't perfect. There was no optical drive, the 7in screen was on the small side and, it certainly couldn't lay claim to being as drop dead gorgeous, nor as powerful, as premium-priced ultraportables such as Sony's VGN-TZ31. But the fact you could buy more than four Eees for the price of a single Sony opened everyone's eyes to just how cheap a laptop can be. More storage and a bigger screen address the main issues with the original, but the price has risen too.

We can't really recommend the Windows version of the Eee PC 900 over its Linux counterpart, primarily because you get nearly twice as much storage space in the Linux version. If you really can't live without XP, then we recommend buying the superior Linux version and installing XP yourself.

Asus has done a brilliant job of updating an already great product. The engineers have clearly listened to all the comments regarding the original Eee PC and attempted to put them right. The 1,024 wide screen makes the Eee PC 900 a joy to use, especially if you spend a lot of your time in a browser window. The extra memory and storage are also very welcome additions, and help make this version of the Eee PC a real alternative to a fully featured notebook. Yes the price is higher than the previous model, but I personally believe that the Eee PC 900 still represents staggering value for money. Ultimately, if you want a notebook that's small, light and still very affordable, the Eee PC 900 should be top of your list.

Modell: Ein nicht spiegelnder Display kombiniert mit geringem Gewicht macht dieses Netbook besonders geeignet für eine Benützung im Freien.

Serie: Preislich gehört es zu den allerbilligsten Geräten, die man derzeit bekommen kann.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 900: Mobiler onboard (shared Memory) Grafikchip (auf Mobile Intel 915GM Chipsatz), ohne Hardware T&L - kaum spielefähig. Für Office und andere Anwendungsprogramme ohne 3D sehr gut geeignet.

3D Spiele sind auf diesen Vertretern nur in Ausnahmen spielbar, grundsätzlich sind die Grafiklösungen hierfür jedoch nicht geeignet. Office Programme und Internet surfen dürfte jedoch ohne Problem möglich sein.

Intel Celeron M: Eigentlich ein Pentium M mit halbiertem Level 2 Cache und auf FSB 400 MHz beschränkt. Kaum langsamere Geschwindigkeit als ein gleichgetakteter Pentium M zeichnet diesen Prozessor aus. Jedoch kann er nicht dynamisch die Geschwindigkeit ändern wie der Pentium M und braucht deshalb ohne Last mehr Strom.
Er ist auch als Low Voltage Version erhältlich mit sehr geringem Stromverbrauch.

Die 4xx Serie basiert auf den Core Solo und hat einen Front Side Bus (FSB) von 533 MHz, jedoch im Vergleich nur 1 statt 2 MB L2 Cache. Er dürfte jedoch bei Büroanwendungen leistungsmäßig gut mithalten (wie schon die 3xx Serie).

Die 5xx Serie basiert auf den Core 2 Solo (Merorm Architektur) und dürfte geringfügig schneller als ein gleichgetakteter 4xx Celeron M sein. Der Celeron unterstützt jedoch keine Virtualisierungstechnik und erhält kein ViiV und vPRO Zertifikat (im Gegensatz zum Core 2 Solo).

8.90": Bei dieser Display-Größe stehen große Smartphones und ein paar kleine Tablets zur Verfügung. Anders als bei den meisten Smartphones sieht man mehr am Bildschirm, mehr Details und kann größere Auflösungen nutzen. Für fehlsichtige Menschen sind solche Formate besser.
