Der Pionier der Netbooks besticht heute vor allem durch seinen günstigen Preis - er ist teilweise schon für unter 200 Euro zu bekommen. Allerdings muss man sich dann auch mit einigen Kompromissen herumschlagen, zum Beispiel dem kleinen und recht dunklen Display mit einer Auflösung, die beim Surfen oft zum Scrollen zwingt und der kleinen Tastatur. Dafür ist der Ur-Eee-PC extrem leicht und dank Linux mit vielen sinnvollen Programmen ausgestattet.

Ein Gerät wie der Eee PC ist schon vom Ansatz her ein Kompromiss, der nicht für alle Aufgaben geeignet ist. Alles in allem ist er aber ein gut gelungener Kompromiss. Dennoch stehen zwei wichtige Punkte auf der Wunschliste für einen Nachfolger. Vor allem ist ein Bildschirm mit höherer Auflösung (gar nicht so sehr eine größere Bildschirmdiagonale) gewünscht.

Unterm Strich konnte der Eee PC meine Erwartungen erfüllen. Ich habe zwar noch keine weiteren Bastelprojekte gestartet, aber einige Software-Spielereien ausprobiert. So habe ich inzwischen auch ein Windwos XP auf einer SDHC-Karte, mit der ich den Eee PC auch beispielsweise für Software-Tests unter dem Redmonder Betriebssystem nutzen kann.

Der Eee-PC 701 4G ist der erste wirklich portable Computer zum fairen Preis. Für etwa 300 Euro finden Sie im Moment nichts Vergleichbares. Alle, die nie genug vom Internet kriegen können, immer ihre Dokumente, Filme und MP3s dabei haben und herzeigen wollen (sofern sie noch ein externes Speichermedium zusätzlich mitnehmen), kommen eigentlich nicht an dem Mini-Notebook von Asus vorbei.

Werden die Kinderkrankheiten abgestellt, ist das Gerät eine Alternative zu den teuren Markengeräten. Als Surfmaschine und für den Abruf von Mails sowie dem Schreiben kurzer Texte ist der Billig-PC allemal eine willkommen Alternative als Zweitgerät oder für Kinder, die als Computereinsteiger beginnen. Geht man von einer Nutzungsdauer von zwei Jahren aus, dann dürfte sich das Gerät jedenfalls rentieren. Dennoch: Wie umweltfreundlich das Gerät ist, was den Stromverbrauch und das verwendeten Material anbetrifft, darüber gibt es keine Angaben. Dass das Gerät genauso wie die der Konkurrenz um die halbe Welt unterwegs war, dürfte keinen Unterschied machen. Gespannt darf man sein, wie die Konkurrenz reagiert. Und vor allem: Sich den EeePC 900 anzuschauen, das Nachfolgemodell, ist sicher ein guter Rat.

Dass der EeePC das 'Gadget' der Stunde ist, überrascht nicht. Er ist der Erste seiner Art und bietet das, was viele User schon lange suchten - rudimentäre Mobilität zu einem Preis, den man sich leisten kann.

Easy to Learn, Easy to Work, Easy to Play - EeePC - so benennt Asus sein Mini Notebook zum Schnäppchenpreis. Mit dem sehr gut angepassten Xandros Linux kann man dies auch bestätigen. Jedoch darf man sich nicht zuviel von dem kleinen Subnotebook erwarten. Besonders wenn man an die Grenzen des Asus Launchers stößt und diese überwinden möchte, ist fundiertes Linux wissen gefragt. Der Lernwillige findet jedoch in zahlreichen Internetforen Anleitungen für jede denkbare Änderung (selbst an der Hardware). Aufgrund der Größe muss sich der EeePC natürlich mit anderen Subnotebooks vergleichen lassen. Hier fällt gleich das größte Manko des Eee PCs ins Gewicht: Die geringe Displayauflösung. Ohne Anpassungen ist die Benutzung des Standard Linux Desktops (KDE) und der Windows Desktop mit 800x480 nur mühsam möglich. Auch die schwache Leuchtstärke des LED beleuchteten Displays fällt negativ auf.

Sicher, der Asus Eee PC kann nicht kritiklos begeistern. Wer das Doppelte hinblättert, also 599 Euro, kriegt bereits ein „richtiges“ Notebook mit einwandfreiem Display, großer Tastatur, viel Speicher auf der Festplatte. Aber man darf den Eee PC eben nicht als Notebook sehen, sondern als spaßigen Begleiter für Kaffeehaus-Surfer, als Skype- und Chat-Station, als mobiles Mail-System, als Tabellen- und Textverarbeitung für die leichte Tasche und natürlich als Gadget für die Geeks unter uns. Wer den Eee PC so nimmt, der wird ihn lieben.

Nur Hype oder echter Hit? test.de sagt, was der EeePC wirklich kann. Der EeePC ist in allererster Linie etwas für Technik-Fans, die sich dem Reiz neuartiger Produkte trotz kleinerer Einschränkungen nur schwer entziehen können. Bei dem Preis ist das verständlich. Ein echtes Notebook kann er allerdings nicht ersetzen. Viele Einsatzmöglichkeiten lassen Spar-Hardware und Mini-Tastatur einfach nicht zu. Daher scheint er eher als Erstrechner für Kinder geeignet. Das gab's noch nie: ein Notebook für 300 Euro. Der Asus EeePC läuft mit Linux, surft mit WLAN, schreibt mit OpenOffice und telefoniert mit Skype. Der EeePC ist weder Sprinter noch Langstreckenläufer, aber 3,5 Stunden umfangreiches Arbeiten für nur 920 Gramm Gewicht - das ist schon eine Menge wert.

Die Verarbeitung des EeePC's ist wie auch von anderen Asus Notebooks gewohnt sehr gut und ohne Verarbeitungsfehler. Das Gehäuse ist aus Aluminium, die leicht rauhe Oberfläche fühlt sich sehr gut und hochwertig an. Asus liefert den EeePC derzeit in den Farben weiß und schwarz aus. Das Design ist Asus gut gelungen und alles wirkt in sich stimmig. Eine gute Idee ist die Positionierung der Lautsprecher gewesen, weil dadurch das Display optisch gestreckt wird und der EeePC größer wirkt als er wirklich ist.
Durch sein nach Vorne abgeflachtes Design kann man sehr gut auf dem EeePC arbeiten. Nur die etwas kleine Tastatur könnte das schnelle Tippen erschweren, bis man sich daran gewöhnt. Das Wort Lautstärke bzw. Geräuschentwicklung kennt der Asus EeePC nicht, weil Lüfter einfach nicht vorhanden sind.

Ein Mini-Notebook mit weniger als ein Kilogramm für knapp 300,- Euro Listenpreis - das hat es bisher noch nicht gegeben. Mit diesem Preis bewegt sich Asus' Eee PC 701 in der Region von PDAs und Smartphones. Bei diesem Preis sind allerdings Abstriche nötig. Die gibt es vor allem beim Display mit einer Auflösung von nur 800 x 480 Pixeln und bei der Prozessorleistung. Die eingebaute Intel-CPU Celeron M mit 900 MHz Taktfrequenz zählt wahrlich nicht zu den schnellsten und aktuellsten Notebook-Prozessoren.
Als Festplatte verwendet Asus eine SSD mit 4 GByte (Flash-Speicher). Nicht sehr üppig: das vorinstallierte Xandro-Linux schluckt bereits 2,3 GByte, daher bleiben nur ca. 1,7 GByte für Nutzdaten.
Der große Vorteil: anders als auf PDAs oder Smartphones laufen auf dem Eee PC 701 die gleichen Programme wie auf jedem PC oder Notebook. Wer also gewisse Abstriche in der Performance hinnimmt, kann für wenig Geld auch unterwegs mit den gewohnten Office- und Mailprogrammen arbeiten.

Mit dem EeePC ist Asus ein großer Wurf gelungen. Nicht umsonst werden die erwarteten Verkaufszahlen ständig nach oben korrigiert. Die Hardware macht einen ausgereiften und keineswegs billigen Eindruck, der Preis ist mit 299 Euro nicht zu hoch angesetzt und lässt über ein paar Unzulänglichkeiten hinwegsehen. In Anbetracht des günstigen Preises beschränkt sich die Kritik aber fast ausschließlich auf die Tastatur. Mit diesem Problem hat aber auch das 2.999 Euro teure Subnotebook zu kämpfen. Wer den EeePC nicht als Ersatz für den Desktop-PC oder ein ausgewachsenes Notebook, sondern als Ergänzung sieht, wird mit Sicherheit zufrieden sein. Für die großen Multimediabrocken reicht der Prozessor natürlich nicht aus. Dennoch ist es problemlos möglich, etwa Fotos zu bearbeiten, ohne den Prozessor allzu sehr in die Knie zu zwingen. Für die Zukunft wäre ein Modell mit eingebauter UMTS-Karte wünschenswert. Spätestens dann wird es schwer sein, den EeePC in Sachen Mobilität zu schlagen.

Da Tastatur-PDAs - die aber deutlich länger laufen - rar geworden sind, findet das gemessene 942 Gramm schwere Gerät sicher auch hier Freunde. Die Software-Installation kann als gelungen bezeichnet werden, und wer sich das Hantieren mit F4-Treibern von einem externen DVD-Laufwerk zutraut, kann ja auch noch Windows XP installieren. Asus hat bereits bestätigt, dass es Versionen des Eee-PC mit abgespecktem XP geben wird - unbestätigt ist aber eine neue Ausgabe mit 8 bis 10 Zoll großem Display. Der kleine 7-Zoll-Monitor ist gegenwärtig der größte Schwachpunkt des Geräts neben der Leistungsaufnahme. Aber angesichts des Preises von 299,- Euro ist hier auch nicht mehr zu erwarten. Ein derart kleines und leichtes Notebook gab es bisher für dieses Geld schlicht nicht.

In der zweiten Hälfte des Dezembers 2007 soll der Eee-PC in deutscher Version laut Asus ausgeliefert werden. Quellenangaben zufolge sind in der ersten Charge rund 50.000 Geräte für den deutschen Markt vorgesehen. Das sollte reichen, um alle "Early Adopters" zu versorgen. Ob der Eee-PC sich aber wirklich als Familienrechner durchsetzen kann, wird vor allem vom Werbe-Aufwand abhängen.

Asus neuer EeePC wurde am 6. November 2007 in Hamburg offiziell für den deutschen Markt vorgestellt. Optisch sieht er aus wie ein Mini-Laptop, doch Notebook-Maßstäbe sollte man nicht ansetzen. Die Eingabe auf den kleinen Tasten – die auch nicht im Standard-Layout angelegt sind – ist gewöhnungsbedürftig und für große Finger sehr schwer. Kinder werden sich aber schnell daran gewöhnen – vor allem, wenn es ihr Erst-PC ist. Der Hub der Tasten ist ausreichend, der Druckpunkt eher mittel. Die Tastatur gibt an keiner Stelle nach unten nach, sie sitzt also sehr fest.
Das Touchpad hat eine recht kleine Fläche. Es ist aber für die Steuerung auf dem 800 x 480 Panel ausreichend. Die Verarbeitung der weißen und schwarzen EeePC-Variante können wir als sehr gut bezeichnen. Das Chassis ist verwindungssteif, die Handballenauflagen lassen sich nicht eindrücken.
Asus will mit dem EeePC Menschen ansprechen, die entweder PC-Einsteiger sind oder ein ultramobiles Gerät für Web-Surfen und Mail/Chat suchen.

You can enjoy in comfortable typing even if you are sitting right to someone in subway (metro) or any other form of (public) transportation. Because of its small dimensions you won’t even feel it wearing it in your backpack. You will only remember it when you need to pull it out from sack and when you want to return it there. Literary, we didn’t think at any moment about its size or dimensions not even about having better backpack with padded shoulder straps so your backs won’t get hurt. We have totally freedom to move and even run. If you recognized yourself in previous sentences than EEE is perfect for you. Only big objection that we have is that this little guy cannot be your primary computer. Like secondary one it is the best choice for users that travel a lot and also have need for advantages of real PC for price of one average PDA device.

Our opinion on the ASUS Eee PC has actually gone UP with this release - we are Windows junkies and as much as we are pushed or persuaded, moving to Linux, especially in the form that ASUS installed on the initial Eee PC just isn't what I want. In fact, one even has to wonder why the Linux version of the Eee PC will continue with the new 9" screen update of the Eee PC just around the corner; carrying two SKUs for the same product where the only difference is the OS seems unlikely, though ASUS could always allow users to download and install the Xandros OS if they want. In the end, ASUS has increased the usability of the Eee PC 4G for MOST buyers while keeping the price the same - an easy win.

While the 7” LCD gets the job done, ASUS should really look into increasing the size of the screen and resolution in future models as there is plenty of space around the screen where speakers are placed and at times I felt viewing extra information on screen without scrolling. I can understand that this will raise the costs slightly as well as lower the battery life by a bit but its probably a sacrifice most will be willing to make. Speaking of battery life, we managed to get almost three hours out of this little PC which is pretty awesome. Since cold booting is very fast, you can save battery life by shutting down the machine instead of putting it to sleep. I have slightly large hands (ok- that’s an understatement) and thus the tiny keyboard of the Eee PC certainly limited my typing speed. However, my wife has no issues with the keyboard- I guess, this is one of those “try before you buy” things. The tactile feel on the keys is fine, however, the mouse button was a bit tight an hard to press.

Evidently, the Eee is not your desktop replacement notebook. It was made to be a secondary, not main computer. You can easily carry it around, since it is very light, and if you have wireless access in your hometown, the usability and practicality of this tiny little guy increase by leaps and bounds. You don't have to be too imaginative to see the delight of web surfing, e-mailing or note taking wherever you are, watching a film during a pause at work etc. It all depends on your needs. Although it is not without flaws (small screen and bad touchpad), ASUS's Eee PC 701 presents a most interesting product, available to anyone at this price point.

Even though the price climbed from the original quotation oh so many months ago, the unit still leaves a sweet taste in my mouth. Being new to Linux, I had no idea what to expect, but I have come off pretty impressed. It's impressively easy - definitely shakes the fear of using computers for newer users or even children. And with that stated, the unit has solid performance for its hardware. I do wish it had a larger display, better ways of implementing more permanent storage solutions, and had about an hour or more of battery life, but otherwise I can't complain too much. For being a sub notebook, fulfilling everything a sub notebook this size should – and coming in HUNDREDS less than the competition, the cons listed above are perfectly acceptable. RECOMMENDED – missing a few features/performance issues, but a great little machine.

Selling a £180 ultraportable laptop might be harder than it sounds. Misled by the low price, consumers could well believe quality for that kind of money is an unobtainable nirvana. The Eee PC defies all expectations, particularly for a device that's nominally aimed at children. We all know that the smaller the laptop, the more expensive it is. But the Eee costs less than any full-blown laptop we've ever seen, while weighing a mere 928g. For tapping out emails and working on documents and spreadsheets, the Eee PC is all but perfect. It measures just 225mm wide and 170mm deep, and weighs only 1.12kg including its power adapter.
The operating system is a custom Asus effort, built on the back of a Xandros installation of Linux.

The Asus Eee is half the size of a 12.1"; widescreen notebook like the Toshiba Portégé R400.
This is one of the first budget ultra-portable PCs to go on sale, but expect to see more devices like this even without the extremes of the crank-powered OLPC. Via has a reference design for a $600 ultra-portable that will be the same size and weight as the Eee PC, but it will have a 1.2 GHz VIA C7 CPU, a VX-700 chipset, up to 1 GB of RAM, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, a DVI port and a 4-in-1 card reader.
The question is how useful these systems will be. They’re far better equipped for Web browsing and email than a smartphone but a better comparison is an intermediate device like the HTC Advantage, which comes with Opera and the Office Mobile apps in Windows Mobile 6 that rival OpenOffice, includes GPS and has a better battery life.

The Asus Eee PC offers outstanding value for Linux enthusiasts and good value for a mainstream audience. The laptop brazenly defies the conventional standards of portable computing and delivers extreme mobility at an appealing price. The basic mode user interface has some weaknesses and lacks visual consistency, but it largely meets the requirements of mainstream users and offers a high level of usability that make it appropriate for an audience that includes students and children. The IceWM and KDE environments are also flexible enough to please Linux enthusiasts who are looking for a cheap platform for developing software while on the go. Asus doesn't attempt to lock anything down, which makes the platform very easy to customize.

You've probably heard of the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) i0,änitiative, which is intended to provide cheap laptops (called XOs) to underprivileged children around the world. What you might have missed is that ASUS, a company known for making laptops and laptop parts, recently launched its own answer to the XO laptop, the Eee PC, a 2-pound ultraportable that's well worth its $400 price, even though it has only 4GB of storage and a Linux operating system. The three E's in Eee PC stand for easy to learn, play, and work; excellent mobile experience; and excellent Internet experience. The ASUS Eee PC, however, is not solely for children—it's meant for anyone who hasn't been able to afford a first laptop. The version that I reviewed (the Eee PC 4G) sells for $400 (street), with other configurations available for as low as $300 (the Eee PC 2G Surf) by the end of November.

Rounding-up our general experiences from a performance perspective, is a relatively easy task with the Asus Eee PC.  The system basically delivered on nearly every expected metric, save perhaps the somewhat cramped feel of the keyboard area, which is part of the territory for a machine of this form-factor.  The operating system was lightning-quick to boot and application load times were also snappy.
In addition, we plugged in a few standard components like USB memory sticks and a USB optical mouse, all of which were instantly recognized by the OS, transparently installed and instantly available for use.  The Linux-based Eee PC even discovered our Windows network automatically and we were able to access files on our storage server with the system's File Manager and other applications as well.

The Asus Eee PC 701 is no power system. You won't want to do video editing, or even image editing, on the device, and it's not going to serve as the multimedia centre for your home. However, the Eee PC provides a high level of functionality at a highly affordable price. Furthermore, it does so while opening the concept of the ultraportable PC to the masses. The small keyboard and screen and the modest internal specs might be a deterrent for some, but for students and those of us who lust after lightweight portables for life on the go, the Eee PC can easily fill that niche. And then some.

The Asus Eee PC has had a quick development path and has gone from a questionable product development to having a near fanatical fan base that is following its every move on the way to the US.  When it was released in Taiwan, Asus tells me that one was sold every two seconds  until stock was drained.  Some people have told me that Asus in Taiwan is like Apple here is in the US; a company with a large following that is always innovating in the market. For those that haven't been following the Eee PC tabloids, or even our previous coverage of the units from Computex this past summer, the Asus Eee PC is basically the most compact and innovative standard notebook computer we have seen in many years. There are two models that Asus is planning on bringing to the US; I had a chance to play with the model on the right, the Eee PC 4G.  In the US market it will probably be known as the Asus Eee PC 4G but we'll see as the release of the notebook nears.

The Asus Eee PC 701 4G is the new affordable ultraportable notebook that's bound to be on many consumers' Christmas wish lists this year. Retailing for $399 or less, the Eee PC isn't exactly a workhorse, but it will do just about every basic task you'd need from a laptop. Our initial hands-on actually proved it does more than we expected, but the more detailed review below helps explain exactly why we’re so excited about a $400 notebook. The designers at Asus had no easy task creating an attractive ultraportable notebook while also making it cheap to produce. The case seams match up with reasonably tight tolerances, plastics feel thick (though the pearl-like white plastics look cheap) and the display hinges are molded into body with the battery. Lifting the display cover you find the amazingly small keyboard surface and even smaller touchpad resting below the recessed display and speakers. In short, the build quality is quite high despite the low cost. In the end, the Eee PC is the single most impressive notebook we've seen priced below $400.

For several months before its release, the Asus Eee PC was one of a handful of small, inexpensive PCs that had tech types buzzing with anticipation. While the other systems, the Intel Classmate and the One Laptop Per Child XO, are aimed at the educational needs of children around the globe and not generally available to consumers, the Eee holds no such highbrow pedigree--it's for sale directly from Asus to the laptop-buying public. The initial buzz on the Asus Eee had the 7-inch, Linux-based laptop coming in as low at $199. In the end, the price is a more realistic $399, which includes a low-end Intel Mobile CPU, 512MB of RAM, and a 4GB solid-state flash hard drive (versions with 2GB and 8GB hard drives will also be available). The obvious limitations of the tiny hard drive, low-power CPU, and lack of the Windows operating system may be enough to scare away many potential users, but despite the system's budget origins, we found it hard to dislike when viewed as a highly portable Web surfing and office productivity machine.

As I said earlier, we had it for only an hour or so, but our first impressions are very strong. Providing no build gremlins creep in, we suspect the RM Asus miniBook is destined for a huge user and fan base, and more importantly, this could be the way that Linux finally emerges into the UK education sector at user level in massive quantities. RM Admitted to us that the profit margin on these is not very large, but boy, it is going to sell a lot of them.

This past weekend a circular advertised a Vista-powered laptop equipped with a Celeron processor, 14.1-inch display, an 80GB hard drive, and a DVD drive for only $399. For the same price, the Asus Eee PC (see the photo gallery) offers the same amount of RAM and Celeron processor but a smaller seven-inch display, a measly 4GB of storage space, and no DVD drive. And yet there's no way we would give up this two-pound wonder for a "regular" notebook. The Eee PC may be designed to appeal to children and older customers, but it should also tempt anyone looking for a lightweight budget PC that weighs next to nothing and connects to the Internet easily. It's ten times simpler to use than any Windows machine, starts up twice as fast (no crapware!), and is only about a fifth of the cost of other systems in its weight class. It's a little rough around the edges, but the Eee PC is a remarkably versatile machine for the price.

Modell: Ein nicht spiegelnder Display kombiniert mit geringem Gewicht macht dieses Netbook besonders geeignet für eine Benützung im Freien. Mit der winzigen Bildschirm-Auflösung ist intensives Internet-Surfen aber sehr mühsam.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 900: Mobiler onboard (shared Memory) Grafikchip (auf Mobile Intel 915GM Chipsatz), ohne Hardware T&L - kaum spielefähig. Für Office und andere Anwendungsprogramme ohne 3D sehr gut geeignet.

3D Spiele sind auf diesen Vertretern nur in Ausnahmen spielbar, grundsätzlich sind die Grafiklösungen hierfür jedoch nicht geeignet. Office Programme und Internet surfen dürfte jedoch ohne Problem möglich sein.

Intel Celeron M: Eigentlich ein Pentium M mit halbiertem Level 2 Cache und auf FSB 400 MHz beschränkt. Kaum langsamere Geschwindigkeit als ein gleichgetakteter Pentium M zeichnet diesen Prozessor aus. Jedoch kann er nicht dynamisch die Geschwindigkeit ändern wie der Pentium M und braucht deshalb ohne Last mehr Strom.
Er ist auch als Low Voltage Version erhältlich mit sehr geringem Stromverbrauch.

Die 4xx Serie basiert auf den Core Solo und hat einen Front Side Bus (FSB) von 533 MHz, jedoch im Vergleich nur 1 statt 2 MB L2 Cache. Er dürfte jedoch bei Büroanwendungen leistungsmäßig gut mithalten (wie schon die 3xx Serie).

Die 5xx Serie basiert auf den Core 2 Solo (Merorm Architektur) und dürfte geringfügig schneller als ein gleichgetakteter 4xx Celeron M sein. Der Celeron unterstützt jedoch keine Virtualisierungstechnik und erhält kein ViiV und vPRO Zertifikat (im Gegensatz zum Core 2 Solo).
