Power-hike aside, the latest iPad Pro 12.9 is only a minor upgrade on the previous model. That’s a bit of a shame, of course, but the iPad Pro has long been in a class all of its own and so this is a case of the best being made just a little bit better. There are rumours that the next iPad Pro, which isn’t expected until 2024, will feature an OLED screen. Some buyers might want to wait for that, but it could be quite a long way off and who knows how much of an upgrade it will prove to be – if any at all. In the here and now, this iPad Pro 12.9 is a stunning device for movies (and music) on the move.

I used the M2 iPad Pro as my sole work machine for almost an entire week. I used it to write articles for XDA Developers, take work calls, write and send emails, and of course, edit this video, all entirely on the iPad Pro with M2 silicon.

Are you an artist or creative that needs to work on the go? The Apple iPad Pro 12.9-inch Gen 6 is the best choice for a go-to tablet, but the choice itself actually isn't that simple. Let's be honest here, there's not a lot of competition coming for iPads, which is why Apple can charge thousands of dollars for this product. If you want to save some money, you could go with the iPad Air (starting at $599) — cutting out those accessories alone will save you practically half a grand. As long as you can afford it, the Apple iPad Pro is the best tablet you can buy.

The iPad Pro remains a curious device and arguably Apple’s most niche. There’s no denying that the hardware is breathtaking but I struggle to think of times where I’d pick it over a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro. For most professionals, a Mac is simply more straightforward device for getting things done. There’s no need to figure out workarounds, it just works. Ultimately, as is the case for its predecessors, this new model is letdown by the limitations and quirks of iPadOS. And until Apple figures this out, this is always going to be the case for its flagship tablets.

There’s no debate on the prowess of the iPad Pro as a tablet. It has been the best tablet in the market for years and the M2 processor just cements that claim further. The iPad Pro (11-inch variant) starts at Rs 81,900 for the 128GB storage variant. The iPad Pro (12.9-inch variant) starts at Rs 1,12,900. The Magic Keyboard starts at Rs 29,900 whereas the Apple Pencil at Rs 11,900. Combine all three and you will end up forking more than what the M2 MacBook Air costs. The iPad Pro (M1) was so good a device that it doesn’t really need to do much to make it better. Apple doesn’t really alter the design of its devices for at least five years. The iPad Pro was redesigned in 2018 and we are now in 2023. So it was no surprise to see Apple not making any changes. All the changes that have been made are in the form of the processor and those are the ones that matter the most. The M2 processor makes the iPad Pro an even faster machine. It’s not for you if you believe that a tablet shouldn’t cost this much. Buy the iPad Pro without any hesitation if you want a tablet that makes no compromise anywhere. Buy the iPad Pro if you want a tablet that comes as close to being a replacement as any in the market. After all, it’s the iPad Pro — and you can never go wrong with it.

The biggest drawback with the 2022 models of the iPad Pro is the steep price increase. It makes a fully featured iPad Pro 12.9 with 2TB of storage and 5G more expensive than a MacBook Pro with a 14-inch retina display and 2TB of storage. And that’s before adding a keyboard to the iPad. Still, there’s no denying that the 2022 edition of the 12.9-inch iPad Pro is a formidable tool for creative professionals who need a powerhouse in a convenient form factor.

Apple’s own stable offers up two compelling alternatives, too. Unless you have a specific use case in mind for the iPad Pro M2, the iPad Air (5th generation) ($559 at Amazon) is a more humble proposition, but it packs a ridiculous amount of punch for the price and can be paired with the same accessories as the iPad Pro. Of course, those same accessories for the iPad Pro also take Apple’s top tablet into MacBook territory. In particular, if you’re considering the 12.9-inch iPad Pro M2 as a laptop stand-in (and don’t care about stylus compatibility), keep in mind that by the time you’ve added the Magic Keyboard, you’ll be well over the base price of the MacBook Air M2 ($1099 at Amazon). With very few exceptions, much of Apple’s product portfolio for 2022 has been stuck in a holding pattern. The iPad Pro M2 arguably got hit the hardest in this regard — improved in only a handful of niche ways and, as such, fittingly launched with little to no fanfare. With no pro-grade software in sight to balance things out, the end result is a genuinely extraordinary tablet that can occasionally feel very ordinary indeed.

The iPad Pro M2 is a wonderful tablet that simply can’t be matched for features and specs by anything else on the market – although it’s a little bit of a disappointment as an upgrade on the previous version. Rumours of wireless charging and a better screen on the 11-inch model were false, with the biggest difference here being the upgraded internal chip. There’s no reason for anyone who splurged on the M1 model to upgrade, so the M2 version is more for those who’ve been hanging onto an older iPad for an extended period and think it’s time for a change. Considering the high price of both sizes, I think this tablet is for a very specific person. The 12.9-inch is for someone who appreciates top-quality display tech and will make use of it with proper HDR content. The ProMotion fast refresh rate also gives it a more fluid screen overall than the cheaper iPad Air. Yet, for most, I believe that Apple’s more midrange iPads are a much better choice – at least until some of that power here is really put to use.

The M2 Apple iPad Pro is a marvellous machine. It’s incredibly powerful, has a great screen and pretty good battery life. There are a few areas in need of improvement – I’d like the webcam to move to the long edge so your video calls aren’t always showing you at an angle and I’d like more USB-C ports, too – but largely it seems like the hardware has matured, until the next big innovation. However, even taking all of the positives into account, it is becoming increasingly difficult to justify investing in an iPad at prices this high. The simple fact is that the £250 price hike in 2022 means that a M2 iPad Pro 12.9in with the Magic Keyboard costs nearly £400 more than for an Apple M2 MacBook Air. When you consider that the MacBook has better battery life, double the storage, a larger screen and weighs less, even Apple diehards will have to admit that the M2 iPad Pro is a tough sell.

Without a doubt, the iPad Pro 2022 is a very powerful tablet and the M2 chipset unlocks new capabilities like Wi-Fi 6E and Pencil with hover support. It can double as a PC with the right accessory, like the Magic Keyboard, but the cost comes close to Rs 1 lakh. So, if you are a regular customer, I'd say the iPad Pro 2022 with M2 is an overkill and there are loads of cheaper options in the market. I'd suggest you go for an iPad Air 2022 with an M1, which also gets the job done efficiently. If you want a PC with similar power, the MacBook Air with M1 remains a great choice. For creators, the iPad Pro 2022 could be a blessing, but a very expensive one. If I were you, I'd spend the money on an iPad Pro 2021 with an M1. However, if you have the money and want the best in the market, the iPad Pro 2022 won't disappoint.

The iPad Pro 12.9in is the most capable tablet around, sporting Apple’s desktop-level M2 chipset that provides unmatched power, one of the best displays around with a 120Hz refresh rate and mini-LED backlighting that allows it to compete with OLED displays while being much brighter, and it looks premium too. The experience is improved even more with the Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard, with the latter turning the tablet into a fully-fledged laptop replacement, though those are premium additions to an already very premium tablet, especially in the UK with a £250 increase at the entry level. The issue is, the iPad Pro 12.9in (2021) is just as capable with the same display tech and overall design. Though it misses out on the Hover mode and M2 chipset, the M1 of that range is still comfortably more powerful than most of the competition, and it’ll be available at a discount now. That said, be sure that you’ll make good use of the latest iPad Pro-specific features before dropping the cash, as you might find a much cheaper iPad that’ll serve your needs.

There’s a lot to like in the latest iPad Pro models. They’re blazing fast, with beautiful screens and more professional capabilities than any previous Apple tablet. But there aren’t as many improvements over the 2021 models as some of us had hoped. This is a simple speed-increase update.

But is all of that worth the extraordinary price Apple demands for the iPad Pro (2022)? That’s where you’ll need to do some decision-making. Want to use your iPad as a computer, but also want a device for drawing? Another option is to buy the M1 MacBook Air and pair that with an iPad Air and the 2nd-gen Apple Pencil — that’s a grand total of a little over $1,700 for an iPad and a proper macOS computer. Apple has a lot of ways for you to spend similar or less money than the asking price of a decked-out iPad Pro for other gadgets in its growing portfolio, and they make the argument for the iPad Pro harder to justify. But maybe you don’t want an iPad and a MacBook. Maybe you want a single screen for writing, drawing, watching movies, and playing games — and money isn’t a barrier. That’s where the iPad Pro (2022) shines. It may not be the most practical product Apple sells, but for those who can stomach it, it’s one of the best.

The Apple iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2022) is by all accounts, a phenomenal tablet. It isn't perfect - it's doesn't change up the design compared to its predecessor, the battery isn't as good as other iPad models and the iPadOS software continues to have limitations compared to macOS - but there is an awful lot to love here. The screen is quite simply glorious, there is so much power under the hood with the M2 chip that most users will struggle to really test its limits and though the design remains the same, it's still an excellent design. Apple has made its best tablet even better with the 2022 model and while you pay a very high price for it, it's an exceptional device that is not only best in its class but truly delivers - with plenty more in the bank for when you demand that little bit extra. If you're after a Pro tablet, you are looking right at it.

There's still a lot of pressure on Apple, perhaps more than ever, to deliver a robust multitasking experience on the iPad Pro. But that's for the iPad Pro lineup in general, and not specific to the 2022 iPad Pro. That said, as I sit here, finishing this very review with the iPad Pro connected to an external monitor, with Safari, Slack and Messages on one display, and a document open on another, I can see the vision and where Apple's going with it. Now it's time to execute it. Should you get the newest iPad Pro with the M2 processor? If you have the 2021 iPad Pro with an M1 processor, you can confidently skip this upgrade. There's just not enough of a difference in the overall experience or a big enough performance boost to warrant the upgrade. However, if you have a non-Pro iPad or a non-M-series-equipped iPad Pro, then it makes sense to upgrade to the M2 version when you're ready.

There’s no question that the new iPad Pro is better than its predecessor. It’s the same price and comes with a more powerful chip as well as a few additional features. That said, I think it’s not as sure a bet as the last iPad Pro was when it came out in early 2021. That’s primarily because of the iPad Pro’s design, which has remained essentially unchanged for the last four years. That’s good news in some ways, because you could have bought an Apple Pencil in 2018 and a Magic Keyboard in 2020 and still use them with the M2 iPad Pro. But at a certain point, probably not too long from now, Apple will advance the form factor yet again. Not that it necessarily needs to; the iPad Pro remains well designed and continues to be a standout performer, as it should be for the price. But that landscape-edge front camera on the 10th-generation iPad tells me that we’ll see an iPad Pro before long with a more substantial redesign and not just one with a faster chip inside.

Apple’s latest iPad Pro is nearly the same as last year’s model, but that’s not a bad thing. The M2 chip is incredibly powerful, the display and design remain top-notch, and there are a few other new features here that should appeal to video editors and Apple Pencil aficionados. The iPad Pro is still quite expensive, and there’s a good chance Apple will give it a full-on redesign in the next year or two, but for now it’s the best tablet money can buy.

I have mixed feelings about the new iPad Pro 2022. Objectively, it’s a well-designed device that delivers everything you’d expect from the premium iPad line. Watching video content, playing games, conferencing with others, web browsing, writing, drawing and more work as well as ever. The M2 chip powering the tablet should also make it fairly future-proof. It’s hard to knock the iPad Pro for what it offers and it's a great option for people buying their first Pro model tablet. However, this tablet doesn’t exist in a vacuum. If you already own last year’s iPad Pro, you absolutely don’t need the new model unless you do heavy-duty design or video editing. The iPad Air 2022 is also a great option for most users due to its impressive performance and relative affordability compared to the iPad Pro. And for those who want one of the best Android tablets, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 is another alternative. However, if you own an older iPad Air or iPad Pro, the iPad Pro 2022 could be just the upgrade you've been waiting for.

It’s a weird year for the iPad Pro. Apple’s top-of-the-line tablet computer has gotten one of its smallest upgrades in recent memory, while the new 10th-gen iPad received things Pro owners have been longing for on their devices for years. And the midtier iPad Air continues to get better with each generation, which just encroaches more on the Pro’s territory. Owners of existing iPad Pro models can happily hang on to what they have and not miss much; if you’re considering buying a Pro this year, I encourage you to look for a sale on last year’s models before committing to the cost of a brand new one.

The iPad Pro 12.9 (2022) is not a huge upgrade over the previous model, adding only more power (to an already extremely powerful tablet) and hover-detection for the Apple Pencil. The latter is a nice feature that's been very well-implemented, and cements the iPad Pro as the drawing tablet of choice. These changes ensure it remains the ultimate tablet powerhouse, thanks in part to a screen that's still best-in-class, and the range of software that's better for the form factor than anything else on the market.

The iPad Pro, especially in its 12.9-inch version, has truly become a device for professionals. If you need it, you already know why you need it, and given that it basically has no competition, you’ll put up with its drawbacks. You may also want it because it's simply Apple's most powerful, largest, and most gorgeous iPad. But when it comes to value for money, you'll probably do better to consider an iPad Air.

In fact, that sense pretty much describes how I feel about the iPad Pro in general. There is so much clear potential here, whether it's with the Pencil's new talents, the steps iPadOS is taking toward making the iPad a laptop replacement like Apple always claimed it was, or the raw performance of the M2 chip. It feels like we're scratching the surface, still. I also feel like I've been saying that about iPad — and iPad Pro specifically — for some generations now. What's changed is the alignment of iPadOS and macOS on Apple Silicon, an awakening of pro-level app makers to the experience parity across both platforms, and the fact that in some ways the iPad Pro now feels like the place Apple debuts some of its most compelling hardware. Does that mean you should spend the $1,099 that the 2022 iPad Pro M2 will cost? That, mind, gets you the 128GB version — you're looking at $1,799 for 1TB or $2,199 for 2TB, plus a $200 premium for 5G. Then there's $129 for an Apple Pencil, and $349 for a Magic Keyboard. In short, MacBook Pro-level processing and MacBook Pro-level pricing too. If the apps you use professionally are supported, though, I can't help but feel like it's probably worth it. The convenience of detaching the keyboard and kicking back with Apple Pencil makes a laptop feel staid. For the rest of us, just like with a MacBook Pro, the iPad Pro may well be overkill, and an iPad Air a far better — and more affordable — fit. I can't blame you if you still go for the Pro upgrade, though.
